Rheyne - Sequenced Jam #21

Published on Feb 16, 2017 Rheyne

"Recorded using only Make Noise and Moog synthesizers. Lighting is triggered by sending audio from two voices to the Max for Live template I use for live looping (see 'Live Jams'), where the lights' dimmers are triggered by audio. Audio for this recording is straight from the mixer, no MIDI or DAW is being used to trigger the notes or process audio (lighting is triggered from separate outputs on the synths)."

"Antique Bridgeport organ which was digitally modified by Pro organ technician. Organ has now 61 semi weighted keys, every key is touch sensitive(you can control volume/brighteness by your playing fingers) All stops have numbers from 1 to 11(hard to see in video).By rotating first stop you can control volume, 2nd stop(push in) is power switch ON and OFF, 3rd stop is grand piano, 4th stop is electropiano1, 5th stop is electropiano2, 6th stop is organ 1, 7th stop is organ 2, 8th stop is strings, 9 and10 stops are harpsichords, 11th stop gives you variety of sounds. let's say if you push 3rd stop grand piano with 11 stop you'll get different sound of grand piano OR if you push in 8 stop strings and 11th stop you'll get vibraphone sound etc. The organ has 2 speakers, pedals on a bottom functions now as sustain pedal(right one, left one is locked). Organ also has MIDI IN and OUT, so you can use the organ as a controller or hook up other keyboard or computer. Under the hood is Yamaha NP series guts. Dimentions: 68" High, 48"wide including handles, 23" deep. Made in late 19' century."

"Well loved Prophet 2000 (SN#399) built in 1985. Considering its age, it is in remarkable cosmetic shape. There are some scratches here and there (please see photos). The electronics are fully functioning, with a brand new floppy drive replaced in Jan 2017 from winecountrysequential.com. This synth comes with approximately 30 floppy disks, some already loaded with great samples, some ready to format/record your own samples to. I’ll pass along a .pdf of the manual as well. The Prophet 2000 is great for sampling anything from drums/percussion to ambient drones. This synth has a great sounding filters, a slick arpeggiator, and it’s fairly easy to dial in a warm analog tone once you get the hang of it..."

This one in via Arturo, via The Playlist.

"'Steiner´s Workshop' is a documentary portrait of a forgotten genius. Part mad scientist, part inscrutable musician, Nyle Steiner is a singular presence in the world of underground inventors.

Beginning as a trumpet player in the 1960s, Steiner's creativity led him to experiment with sounds and machines, developing a series of instruments, including the EVI or Electronic Valve Instrument, a brass-style electronic synthesizer. The EVI's haunting sound and Steiner's expert playing ability sparked the interest of Hollywood and filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola who invited him to be a part of the recording of Apocalypse Now's soundtrack. For more than 40 years Steiner has been working in his Utah workshop assembling, modulating, destroying and understanding anything he can get his hands on.

In 'Steiner´s Workshop' we get to know the man behind his unusual inventions by spending intimate moments with him and watching his curious mind at work."

Synth Designer Tatsuya Takahashi Leaving his Role at KORG

The man who brought the boutique magic back to KORG will be transitioning from his role on February 17. In his message below, he mentions a few key points, one, it's been 10 years since he started at KORG, two, he will be switching to an advisory role for KORG, but will not being going to competitors, and three, he will be moving from Tokyo to Cologne to explore new endeavors. I may be wrong, but the way the following is written, it sounds like he will be switching from being a full time employee of KORG to an independent contractor for KORG.

Here is his message:

"THANK YOU!!!

It's been a good ten years at Korg!

A few years after starting at the office, Tada and I, over a cigarette break, started shooting ideas around for a battery powered pocket analog synth. The monotron was the humble beginnings of what became a mission to make synthesizers fun, exciting and accessible again. To give synthesizers back to the people. To make synthesizers less snobby. To open up creative opportunities. To get people interested in electronic sound and see some kind of light in creating their own sound using technology amidst a world that is inundated with it.

monotrons, monotribe, volcas, minilogue, monologue, some reissues, SQ-1, littleBits synth kit - we put out a lot of gear.

After a blur of 21 products we released over seven years, I look at the world of synthesizers and it's a pretty cool place. I see kids getting their first taste of synths with the volcas. I meet people who have their dormant synth passion rekindled by the minilogue. And it's not just Korg. The whole industry has set out to achieve this common goal.

The name volca comes from the German word Volk: 'the people' or 'crowd'. Like Volkswagen 'the people's car', the volcas are 'the people's synth'. I have fond memories of meeting Mike Banks and being told how the volcas reached poverty-stricken youths in Detroit. That manufacturers have to take responsibility for the social implications of putting out gear.

On the 17th of February I will be leaving my full time position at Korg and will sidestep to advisor. I will also be moving out of Tokyo to Cologne to explore new areas where sound and technology can have positive social implications. I won't be going to any of the competition, but rather will be shifting direction of my main line of work while at the same time guiding the now super team at Korg venture into the future.

I am hugely indebted to everyone in engineering (my super duper team will keep designing the best of the best), production (love you all in Vietnam we did this together!), sales (job well done), marketing (fun times making those movies), distribution / dealers (essential work the world over), media (you guys got the word out) and most of all the musicians out there who are creating music with our synths - without you our work is meaningless.

THANK YOU

it's been a ton of fun. more to come.

Conexão Moxf, DX7-II e Iphone app Animoog

Published on Feb 16, 2017 Henrique Matos

Spotted this one on discchord. See if you can recognize the theme - click through for the answer.

Googlish translation of the video description from Spanish:

"This is a demonstration of a connection possibility using MOXF with Iphone or iPad using Synths Apps together with a second controller / synth

For this The idea here is to use an App on the Ipad / Iphone that will be controlled by a controller (in this case I used the "Lightning to USB Camera Adapter" cable). DX7ii). And also allow the app to use the MOXF audio interface (this does not work with the MOX)

How the connection is made.
1-Connect the MIDI OUT of the DX7ii (or other controller) on the MOXF MIDI IN
2-Connect the Iphone / Ipad to the USB to HOST port of the MOXF using the "Lightning USB to Camera Adapter" cable
3-Increase the volume on the "Daw Level" Slide in the MOXF
4-Configure the app to use the "Yamaha-MOXF-3" port. Attention: it is 3. (since it will only route to USB what comes from the MOXF MIDI IN port). This is the secret.

Also check which midi channel your controller is sending and which midi channel your app is configured to receive midi, some can be set to Omni (all midi channels). Oh, and do not confuse midi channel with midi port, okay?"

DIY 8 Bit Bass Sound Synthesis with the Bastl Micro Granny 2

"DIY 8 Bit Bass Sound Synthesis with the Bastl Micro Granny 2

This one is for the DIYer’s out there. Creating your own custom sounds can be a very rewarding process. In this video we’ll use the 8 bit converters of the Bastl Microgranny 2 sampler to create a Synth Bass sound from a Tibetan Singing Bowl. For those who are looking for an entry video into the world of sound design, this will provide enough to peak your interest as well as open you up to the vast possibilities of using Lo-fi sounds sources as an addition to your design process.

Lastly using an 8bit sampler like the Microgranny is an alternative option for those who want a vintage lo-fi sampler sound but don’t want to buy and older sampler."

Akai Tom Cat vs Arturia Drumbrute

Published on Feb 15, 2017 HardtekStudios

You can see when the Tom Cat triggers by the flashing pad.

"In this analog Drum Machine face-off, we have the Akai Tom Cat against the big news new comer; the Arturia Drumbrute. Peak levels have been matched with appropriate room for gain during tweaking of the drum parameters. The Tomcat will play a pattern for one bar then the Drumbrute will play the same pattern for one bar and repeat as I tweak parameters to give you a fair representation of the range of sound passible by each drum machine. I cannot cover every aspect of each due to time and inconsistencies in the different drum machines. Have fun watching and use it as one of many tools to help you gauge which analog beat box is best suited for your studio."

The sequence is not exactly the same, but close enough. The 261e is panned left and the 208 is panned right. The sine from the 261e is going through the 285e and is center panned. I like the sound, but I think the 259 has a sweeter tone."
