NATURAL GATE Overview & Memory Demonstration

NATURAL GATE Demo - Chord Bingle

Published on Oct 24, 2017 Rabid Elephant

"A lil song/jam with all sounds processed by 2 Natural Gates."

via Rabid Elephant:

"OFFICIAL RELEASE WITHIN 24 HOURS!

Natural Gate is a dual channel, adjustable decay, zero bleed LPG (lowpass gate) designed in our own special way.

OVERVIEW

Natural Gate has been designed to generate a signature response evocative of the acoustics of the natural world. Think of how the plucking of a string or the beating of a drum head produces organic sounds we are all intimately familiar with, sounds that resonate with us, they feel right.

To obtain these qualities, we started with a blank slate and developed an instrument with its own unique character. A character unhampered by the conventions of traditional circuits and devices.

Natural Gate's fully adjustable (and voltage-controllable) decay alters the level of damping of the object you hit - from very short highly damped events to vibrations that ring out for several seconds. The module's innovative circuitry ensures the perfect decay shape at any decay setting.

What you hit matters just as importantly; the MATERIAL switch provides a selection of three material characteristics further increasing the flexibility of the instrument.

The HIT input's circuitry was carefully designed to ensure that any signal you send in will correctly drive Natural gate's envelopes. The CTRL input allows you to open the gate in any way you see fit and when combined with HIT, natural dynamics are realised.

Natural Gate was painstakingly designed and tuned by many pairs of seasoned ears. Natural Gate defines a new paradigm of how the LPG can be experienced and used, thus opening a portal for dialing in new discoveries.

New Korg Synth Coming to NAMM

Update: a few updates have been made to this post - mainly just a little more elaboration.

So, there are rumors that KORG will be introducing a new synth at NAMM this year. I almost didn't put a post up as that's kind of the point of NAMM - manufacturers typically introduce new gear at NAMM. It's almost like posting: New Gear to Appear at NAMM!!! It's not really news until there is actually something to report. Otherwise it's just click bait imo. That said, this is what we do know:

It's not the Maxilogue pictured. That's just something I found on the net and haven't yet posted here. It also represents an evolution of the Monologue, and the actual new synth is supposedly being worked on by the people behind the Monologue and the Minilogue. Note Tatsuya Takahashi, the man behind the Monologue and Minilogue left his role at KORG back on February 17, however he did maintain an advisory role. The new synth is supposed to bring something new to the game. Of course all synths bring something new, but KORG is teasing at something akin to "mind blowing". The name will be eight letters long, start with the letter "P", and apparently will have numbers in it as well. Some are guessing it might be a Poly8000. That could imply a more-than-4-voice poly digital analog hybrid. For something "mind blowing" it will need to be more than your standard poly analog. We'll see... If anyone has anymore concrete info, please do share!

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

P.S. I picked the Maxilogue render for this post as it's actually never been featured on the site before. It appears to be someone's mock up of what a larger Monologue would look like. I do hope KORG's new synth gives us more than four voices. Somehow four voices has become the standard minimum for a poly, which is unfortunate imo.

New STG Soundlabs Dual-output EG and LFO

This one sent my way via Atomic Shadow

"The world's most advanced ADSR. Features 3 different EG models: 911 style DADSR/AHDSR, Synthi 100 Trapezoid with quadrature outputs, and our own ADSAR/DASAR we call the Pyramid Blaster. If it's confusing why there are multiple shapes mentioned for each model, it is because this envelope generator outputs two shapes simultaneously!

There are 4 modes of operation: Hold, Trigger, LFO A and LFO B. "Hold" means the envelope will move to the sustain stage and wait until the trigger input returns to 0V to move to the next stage. "Trigger" means the envelope will move through all time stages on a leading edge at the trigger input, "LFO A" means the envelope will free-run in a loop and restart on a leading edge at the trigger input, and "LFO B" means it will loop only while a gate signal is present at the trigger input.

Envelope Generator has 4 different time scales: X.1, X1, X10, and Tempo Sync. The Xn scales are based on the absolute time markings on the front panel dials, 1 second, 10 second, and 100 second ranges. "Sync" will tempo syncronise the stage times to musical values based on tempo information received over the STG Clock Bus connector on the back of the unit.

Additionally the module supports full voltage control of time and sustain level, slope control and cv, and gate outputs for each stage via a sidecar module."

Steffi - In The Studio

Published on Oct 24, 2017 FACTmagazine

Follow-up to her Against the Clock performance here.

"Steffi shows us her slick studio full of unusual vintage gear

Dutch techno icon Steffi made her massive Against The Clock session look easy, effortlessly gliding from synth to synth in her compact studio to create a tightly-wound electro track in just 10 minutes.

After the time was up, the Ostgut Ton regular and Panorama Bar resident talked us through what she did and how she did it, giving us a guided tour of her enviable gear collection at the same time.

Steffi’s got all the classics you’d expect in her studio – a TR-808 drum machine, a Minimoog for basslines – but also a few unusual items, like the Waldorf synth she uses for string sounds and a Sequentix Cirklon sequencer. Check it out above and watch her go Against The Clock."

"'Boutique Orchestra' with Roland A-01, JP-08, JU-06, JX-03, TB-03, SH-01a, TR-09, D-05, and SE-02
I went to the Woodland Park Zoo with Mia, Nina, and Machi back in February. That's the video in the middle. I used the TR-09 for the beat and the TB-03 for the BASS line. I had the SH-101a double a BASS like part. I used the JU-06 for some sweet swells. The JX-03 supplied that JET sound. The A-01 supplied the simple square wave part. The JP-08 did the bell part. The D-05 provided the Staccato Heaven sound. Finally, the SE-02 played the melody. Unfortunately, the TR-08 and System 8 didn't get a part in this tune. I guess I'll have to play them another time. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe, share, and leave feedback. I love hearing from all of you. Take care, Sam."

"AKAI VX-90 rack. It sounds amazing and is 100% functional. It comes from a clean smoke free home. It comes with the original rack ears and hardware. This is a VCO synth with a lot of cool features. All of the waves have pulse width. You can stack half or all of the voices in unison and then detune them for a super fat sound. Its really easy to edit from the front panel. It also has an input to process external audio form AKAI samplers. The only thing worth mentioning it that the power cord has been shortened to fit in a rack, it does not affect the synth whatsoever."

Russell E.L. Butler // Live @ Erica Synths Garage

Published on Oct 24, 2017 Erica Synths

Russell Butler is an experimental artist and DJ based in Oakland, California. Originally from Bermuda, Russell has developed a process of improvisation that draws from a rich cultural of history rooted in their island and the black, queer diaspora. For the past few years they have been making a brand of stripped down machine techno that has evolved rapidly with each successive release. Transplantation, evolution, and healing are themes in Russell’s music. They based their 2015 album, “God is Change”, on Octavia Butler’s Parable series of novels, in which these are central tenets of the philosophy that the books explore. Since its release “God is Change” has received major acclaim, with NPR naming it one of their top 10 favorite electronic albums of 2015. In 2016, Russell released “Visions of the Future” on Jacktone Records, which is a collection of improvised modular synthesizer sessions. A month later, Russell’s follow up to “God is Change”, “The First Step”, was released on Black Opal. “The First Step” is dedicated to the “…black, brown, trans, queer, and gay folks of Oakland” and posits that “…sometimes to resist oppression, all we must do is simply exist. That is the first step. Let us strive to walk without fear.” Russell's newest record, “I'm Dropping Out of Life”, was released on January 30th via CGI Records and has already received praise from NPR, Fact, Thump, and The Fader, with early play by DJs like Nina Kraviz, Umfang, and Powder.

Why Phase Locked Loops Are Cool

Published on Oct 23, 2017 Illumination Station

"Phased Lock loops are a process in which one oscillator is able to control the pitch of another via a feedback loop. It can produce wild and unexpected results and is a lot to experiment with. The basis for a PLL is to feed both oscillators into a phase detector. This compares the two phases creating a voltage as the result, by filtering to smooth this voltage and patching it back into one of the oscilaltors. The creates a system with feedback which finds equilibrium when both oscillators are in phase with each other and thus also at the same frequency. If the frequency of the primary oscillator strays to far the lock will be broken resulting in chaos. in the opening of the video you hear just the oscillator that is being lock. when I adjust the rosie you can hear both oscillators together, hearing them break apart and come back together."

The Game Needs You

Update: video Re-Published on Oct 24, 2017

"Thank you Rickey West/Kool & the Gang for The Funk. I hope yous don't mind the bite, brawl, and sprawl.

SE-02 does everything, with the exception of (probably not a proper use of a colon, or list construction):

EMU Xtreme Lead Piano—apart from the fairly feral SE-02 External Input processed piano layers in the Cuban-flavored breaks—makes 1st appearance after the opening bass salvo;
95% of the hi hats;
non 90's kick;
voices;
ambient Golden Gate Park tunnel/stargate (Sunshine Jones knows the one), and "All the Things" Lyle Link's transcendent alto sax was on that eternal day spent with son #1 son Carlo (who maddeningly despises the saxophone). Good thing I never made Lyle any the wiser when we chatted warmly after the tune concluded; his entire performance is on my personal Facebook page. And yes brother Greg St. Regis and I are shedding the solo; the sax-like break in this piece is blessed by what I "met" in those SF reverberation revelations. Pay homage to the maestro, beautiful music people: www.lylelink.com/

Moving on from the things I must be forgetting, to bits I remember:

Synth chords/stabs/pads/moods—demanding polyphonics arranged and split apart in DP9, and then fed to the SE-02 one life at a time. Not as time consuming as one might imagine, and sounds so nice...

Kool's chords were tuned in the 3 OSC '02, and multi-tracked for the juicy result I hoped would follow, which did.

The ethereal flutey floating... lead (really needed another f word) = iPhone and SE-02 SPEAKER! Don't even think I touched it after that. And folks assigned that little guy to the trash heap upon 1st blush—another knee-jerk reaction proven wrong. We only know what we know, so knowing otherwise is tricky.

Crunch chords courtesy of DP9's brutally virtual Custom '59—you can hear the raw sound hard right.

Free now to pursue the next sound obsession, and not sure if that's wise... thanks for listening and reading, if you got this far,
MSR 10-12-17

Oh yeah the ending verse, one can almost discern:

The game, always lies beneath the truth;
why you surprised when it's uncouth?
The game, strips and preys with nail and tooth:
you can't decry your sacrificed youth.
