Division 6 DUAL MINI SEQUENCER

A few pics of my new Division 6 DUAL MINI SEQUENCER!!! Two racked shots below.

I am looking forward to giving this one a go this weekend. It's a dual 16 step sequencer that can run each sequence either independently or linked. Each one has a five octave range and offers an accent out, which should be very interesting in adding that extra dynamic to sequences.

The following is a recap on what these can do via the Division 6 website, for those that missed the announcement back in March:

"Why would you need more than one sequencer? Why would you need mini sequencers?

More sequencers = more steps
Use one for playing notes and the other for transposing those notes
Can be used as a clock divider
Run in parallel for multiple CVs / triggers
Each one gives you the standard CV and gate out, plus an ACC out (Accent? Accessory?) Use it to open up a filter, enable a glide, trigger a drum, or whatever you can think of.

The two sequencers will run completely independently, or you can daisy-chain them using the XP IN/OUT jacks to create sequences of any length.

Each sequencer has its own internal clock to get you up and running in a hurry, but you can connect an external clock if you need greater control of tempo or want to sync with other devices.

The module stores your latest sequence even when the power has been removed.

While this kit is designed to give you a Eurorack module, the PCB patterns for the jacks also have holes that will accept Johnson/Cinch-style banana jacks. There are also standoff holes on the main PCB, so you can mount them behind your own custom panel.

This module has lots of LEDs and is very shiny, but only two of them are ever on at a time which keeps it from loading down your power supply.

Inputs

CLK IN (External clock input)

XP IN (Expansion input; Starts sequencer back at step 1. Use for daisy-chaining multiple units)
Outputs

XP OUT (Sends pulse when sequencer goes past last step. Use for daisy-chaining multiple units)

CV OUT
GATE OUT
ACC OUT (Can be programmed on or off in each sequence step)

Features

CV OUT covers 5 octaves, and can be tuned using front-accessible trim pot

Sequences can be set to any length up to 16 steps by using LOOP feature

Setting a step to REST holds previous pitch and doesn't fire GATE

In Standby mode, sequencer can be used as a tiny keyboard without altering programmed sequences

Eurorack Improv no 4 Gently does it. Ambient polyrhythms

Published on Nov 9, 2017 Richard Lacy

"More ambient stuff from the rack...
One pass and no overdubs. Patch notes below.

Doepfer Dark Time Seq is the master. Clock is being sent to various sequencers and the 4MS RCD, which in turn is running other sequencers in different timings.

1. The soft-sounding patterns from the outset are similar to thing I did on an earlier video: A149-1 RCV and A149-2 are randomly (clocked random) firing six AS AD envelope generators. These are controlling the levels of the six bands of the 4MS SMR. The bands are from multiple scales and are locked. Audio out goes via the Dave Smith Character for some extra fatty crust. Using the EGs allows me to hold some notes and not others, creating patterns or pads depending on the settings.
2. Bass: AS SQ8 sequencer into the Atlantis pitch CV. The gate comes from the div3 output of the 4MS RCD, so the notes are changing independently of the gates.
3. The Rings sound: Metropolis into Rings pitch CV. TipTop One is playing a metallic sound every four beats. this audio goes into the input of Rings. Rings audio out goes to Clouds for a bit of reverb and delay. Then it goes through the AQA Dual SVS for filtering.
4. Shapeshifter open fifth pattern: We're in chord mode with a bit of modulation, making for a choppy, guitar sort of sound. Audio goes to the Rainmaker for delay.
5. Synth arpeggio: Stepper Acid into two A110-1 Oscs. Filtered through an AS Telemark filter with an envelope on the cut off. Output goes to the 4MS DLD, then to the Z-DSP for a big reverb.
6. Snare Drum: Braids into an AS Telemark filter.
7. Bass Drum: it's an Electribe, just out of shot, under the camera. It can take a gate input for clock, so happy days; I can alter the bass drum pattern easily.
8. Korg MS20: out of shot, playing one note with lots of filter and volume modulation.
9. Korg MS10: out of shot, playing two notes from an AS SQ8

My previous videos were recorded straight to stereo, but this one went multitrack into ProTools. Mainly so I could delay and reverb on the MS parts! No overdubs though.
Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe!"

New North Coast Synthesis MSK 010 Fixed Sine Bank

via North Coast Synthesis Ltd.

"Everywhere A Sine

Never run out of modulation sources again. With the MSK 010 you get eight fixed-frequency LFOs with nice smooth sine waveforms in 8HP, which is one of the best LFO to HP ratios in the Eurorack world.

The MSK 010's Wien-bridge oscillator cores produce low-frequency sine waves natively, in a fully analog way with a minimum of harmonic distortion. There are no glitches from waveshaping or stair-steps from insufficiently filtered digital-to-analog conversion. Modulate synthesis parameters with these for smoothly evolving timbres and mind-expanding soundscapes. Because the cores are fully independent and will not synchronize, a patch using multiple LFOs will not repeat its modulation state for a long time, if ever.

Choose one of three variants of this module, each with its own set of eight nominal frequencies and cycle times. There are no duplicate or near-duplicate frequencies between different variants, so with two or three, you get the full benefit of a larger modulation palette. Note that the nominal frequencies are just that; every module will have its own one-of-a-kind pattern of exact output frequencies within a few percent of the nominal values, due to component tolerances.

Variant A - 16mHz, 60mHz, 190mHz, 410mHz, 720mHz, 1.3Hz, 4.8Hz, 16Hz (63s cycle time down to 63ms)
Variant B - 34mHz, 88mHz, 160mHz, 280mHz, 600mHz, 1.8Hz, 3.4Hz, 11Hz (30s cycle time down to 94ms)
Variant C - 28mHz, 72mHz, 130mHz, 340mHz, 2.2Hz, 4.1Hz, 7.2Hz, 8.8Hz (35s cycle time down to 110ms)
The MSK 010 is available as a pre-built 8HP Eurorack module or for do-it-yourself construction, with prices as low as zero (if you download the plans and source all the parts yourself). Imagine having enough LFOs to modulate everything.

All-new design, not a clone or imitation of anything else
Fast starting - full amplitude oscillations within one cycle of power-up, unlike the usual behaviour of an oscillating filter
Through-hole design for easy hand construction and maintenance
Connectors between boards, and panel components, mounted on the boards; no flying wires
All three variants build from the same bill of materials; one full kit or PCB set can be used to build any one variant of your choice.
No compromises on component quality: real aluminum panel, not PCB material, with colour printing; nickel and gold plating on the circuit boards; close-tolerance fixed resistors and integration capacitors.
Complete technical documentation released under GPL
Specifications

New North Coast Synthesis MSK 008 Dual VC Octave Switch

via North Coast Synthesis Ltd.

"Master of Melodies

The MSK 008 Voltage-Controlled Octave Switch is a multifunction voltage processor. The module has two channels, each containing a whole-volt quantizer that maps its input to the nearest integer number of volts from -2 to +2; a three-position toggle switch that shifts the quantizer boundaries up or down by a volt; and a precision adder (with optional subtraction function).

If you simply route a pitch CV through one of the unquantized CV1 inputs, it can be a performance control, allowing easy transposition up or down an octave at the flip of a switch. That might be useful for VCOs without their own built-in octave switches. With no input signal, it generates a selectable offset of -1, 0, or +1 volts; feed that into an attenuated exponential FM input somewhere and you get the same tactile control over any other interval transposition you choose.

But the possibilities really open up when you start using more inputs. An LFO into the quantized input gives the effect of flipping the octave switch under CV control, keeping your hands free to wiggle elsewhere. Using the unquantized inputs, which are normalled across the two channels, you can transpose one sequence by another. The CV2 input can add or subtract, selectable during build by a solder jumper on the circuit board; in a default build, CV2 adds on the left channel and subtracts on the right, but do-it-yourselfers can change this selection, or design their own expanders to make it switchable on the fly.

Combining the two channels, with or without other utility modules, allows more complex melody-shifting effects. And it doesn't have to be just for oscillator pitch control. Switching fixed-voltage offsets on filter cutoffs also makes for great drops and timbral shifts. (And try putting the result through a slew limiter!) The default sum and difference configuration allows the module to act as a "mid-side" encoder or decoder. With other patching it can be a flip-flop or a wavefolder.

The MSK 008 is fast enough to work on audio. The quantizer is built from hardware comparators, without a microcontroller, and it can do simple bit-crushing effects across the whole audio spectrum. Each channel can also be a unity mixer for audio, with two regular inputs plus the output of the bit-crusher.

The MSK 008 is available as a pre-built 8HP Eurorack module, a do-it-yourself kit, or bare boards. Prices can be as low as zero (if you download the plans and source all the parts yourself). It has blinky red and green lights on it.

Two channels and multiple CV functions in a small space
Flash-style comparator quantization - no microcontroller
Through-hole design for easy hand construction and maintenance
Connectors between boards, and panel controls mounted on a board - no flying wires
No compromises on component quality: real aluminum panel, not PCB material, with colour printing; nickel and gold plating on the circuit boards; close-tolerance metal film fixed resistors; multiturn trimmers.
Fully open design - no lock-in
Specifications

8HP Eurorack synthesizer module, 43mm deep including mated power cable.
Maximum current requirements in normal use 45mA at +12V, 50mA at -12V. Reverse-connection protected.
Build difficulty: easy. All through-hole. Accurate voltmeter (or a tracking VCO and some way of measuring its frequency) needed for adjustment."

New North Coast Synthesis MSK 007 Leapfrog VCF

And we have a new maker featured on the site.

via North Coast Synthesis Ltd.

"Not Your Grandmother's Synth Filter (Yet)

There are hundreds of analog synthesizer VCFs, but only a few core designs. You've got your Moog transistor ladder and imitators that use diodes or other substitutes; you've got your two-pole state variable filter, maybe cascaded to get additional poles; and that's about it. Your grandmother was making electronic music with these designs in the 1960s, and not much has happened since. There are a few more options available in digital and semi-digital (such as switched-capacitor) architectures, but most analog designers have given up trying to create really new filters. Instead, they compete on how well they can imitate or clone specific "vintage" filters.

The North Coast Synthesis MSK 007 Leapfrog is new and different, with a sound all its own. The fifth-order "leapfrog" core topology, with five integrators and multiple feedback loops, originates in scientific work more recent than the 1960s and as far as we know never before available in a modular synth VCF. The near-elliptic response curve has an extremely sharp cutoff, with ripple in the passband and nulls in the stopband at frequencies chosen to be musically relevant.

Sweep the cutoff and hear each harmonic pop into existence and wobble around before the next one arrives. Choose a timbre, and the temperature compensated volt per octave tracking will keep it consistent across the frequency range. Change it up with exponential and linear frequency modulation. There's even a built-in VCA, because you can never have too many VCAs.

The MSK 007 is available as a pre-built 16HP Eurorack module, a DIY kit, or as bare boards. It's the perfect gift for Grandma or any other electronic musician in your life.

All-new design, not a clone or imitation of anything else
Ultra-sharp five-pole near-elliptic low-pass response, 61dB/octave at the least steep part of the main cutoff slope, with peaks and nulls at musically relevant frequencies
Built-in VCA switchable to feedback or output modes from the front panel - no jumpers
Temperature compensated V/octave tracking
Through-hole for easy hand construction and maintenance
Connectors between boards, and panel controls mounted on a board - no flying wires
No compromises on component quality: real aluminum panel, not PCB material, with colour printing; nickel and gold plating on the circuit boards; smooth-touch conductive plastic panel potentiometers rated for one million operations; polystyrene integrator capacitors; close-tolerance metal film fixed resistors; multiturn trimmers.
Fully open design - no lock-in
Specifications

16HP Eurorack synthesizer module, 58mm deep including mated power cable.
Maximum current requirements in normal use: 70mA +12V, 65mA -12V. Reverse-connection protected.
Build difficulty: intermediate to advanced, because of the number of parts and adjustment steps. All through-hole. Multimeter and dual-trace digital oscilloscope are recommended for adjustment, with other options possible."

"Used by Basic Channel/Chain Reaction, Deepchord, Dan the Automator, Three Times Dope, Cevin Key, Aphex Twin, etc. Way more powerful than an SP-12 and SP-1200 with only 2 analog filters instead of only 8 on the Studio 440, and over 30 seconds of sample time with scsi. Only 500 units ever made by Sequential Circuits.

Purchased from a Sequential collector who babied the unit with very minimal usage. Probably the most clean 440 left in existence on earth. Look at the others that are torn up and selling for more. The unit was purchased directly from Dave Smith himself.

Fully working. Comes with new pads, new data slider, and new blue OLED display. Stunning condition and cheaper then the other 2 440's that are posted on another auction site. Comes with 20 original Sequential library floppies and original Owners manual and Service guide, and with the latest and last OS eproms from PointSource, and power cable. Vintage unit with no returns. But feel confident with my feedback that the transaction will be solid. I hope the unit will be purchased by someone who knows the power of the Studio 440, and can appreciate how cherry, although not new out of the box, but wonderfully well taken care of this unit is in. This is #29 of only 500 ever made. You will never find a cleaner 440."

Max for Cats - MSE Synthesizer System

Published on Nov 9, 2017 max forcats

Follow-up to the teaser posted here.

Some details via sonicbloom:

"The MSE Synthesizer System consists of three components: the synth module, the Quad, four of the MSE synths stacked together, and the SEQ8, a step sequencer.

The MSE Synthesizer module is a small but very powerful and versatile high quality synth. It can be played in mono mode or 8 voice polyphonically.

Mono or 8 voice poly mode
Glide/Pitchbend
2 oscillators (saw/pulse with PW)
Oscillator sync for pulse wave
Multimode state variable filter with LP, notch, HP and BP
2 LFOs with several waveforms, sync or free running
2 ADS envelopes
A sub and noise oscillator
Several modulation targets

The big Quad is four of the MSE synths stacked together and each MIDI note will sequentially play one of the four MSE modules - just like the old 1975 Four Voice Synthesizer from Oberheim. Each module can have it's own key split and can be programmed fully independently. A Unison mode will play them all together for ultra-phat bass or lead sounds.

4 MSE modules
Keysplit for each MSE
Individual glide for each MSE
8 oscillators
Oscillator sync for pulse wave
4 multimode state variable filters with LP, Notch, HP and BP
8 LFOs with several waveforms, sync or free running
8 ADS envelopes
4 sub and noise oscillator
Several modulation targets

And finally, the SEQ8 is an analogue style step sequencer with 8 steps, swing, integrated MIDI scaling and Map function. The pattern can be transposed with incoming MIDI notes. This sequencer can be used with any synth, be it software or external hardware synths.

Sync or free running
Key transpose
Randomise for each row
1- 8 note steps
1- 8 octave steps
1- 8 velocity steps
1-8 map steps for free parameter mapping with smoothing
Swing
Note scaling
Direction: FWD (forward), BWD (backward), BAF (back and forth), ALT (alternate), RND (random)
Step mutes"

Analog Experiments 8 (Novation Circuit Mono thru Moog MuRF)

Published on Nov 9, 2017 HardtekStudios

"The Novation Circuit Mono Station audio out is routed into the audio in of the Moog MuRF. The MuRF turns it into a stereo signal that is routed init my Mackie Onyx mixer feeding Logic for recording. Lots of gate/cv stuff too. The Circuit Mono's sync out is routed into the MuRF's step/tap in to sync the filter sequencer to the Circuit Mono's tempo. I occasionally tweak the MuRF's Rate knob to scramble the tempo before it automatically resyncs. The C-Mono's LFO is routed to the aux CV out, which is routed to the CV in of the MuRF's Envelope. Throughout the jam, I increase the LFO about from zero to get some really interesting and percolating sounds."

The two jump inputs send the next step somewhere else that depends on the 2^2 and 2^3 counts of the chips of both step directions......ie somewhat uncontrollable but it enables more complex patterns to be created. The two direction inputs change the direction of the count.

There are two voltage controlled slewed outputs, two CV outputs giving the same CV, 1 inverted CV output and 16 gate outputs.

This video shows some badly played chords and melody on the 'String' instrument, without any of the wave folder so you get an idea of the oscillator sound. I am shaping the sound with the two filters, plus ping the resonance and sweeping the resonance to demonstrate the timbres that are hiding within"

BLOCKS Beatmaker Kit – the ultimate beat-making instrument

Published on Nov 9, 2017 ROLI

If you’re sketching ideas on-the-go or refining high-quality productions in the studio, it’s easy to configure Beatmaker Kit to suit your needs.

Two Lightpad Ms form the dynamic core of the Beatmaker Kit. Play different instruments or drums on two tactile and responsive surfaces — or use one Lightpad to launch clips and loops. Unlock the full potential of portable music-making in NOISE, or connect your Beatmaker Kit to leading studio software.

Each Block in the Beatmaker Kit snaps together wirelessly through DNA connectors, so you can mix and match as you go. Play each Lightpad M as pocket-sized, standalone instruments — or extend the possibilities by adding more Blocks."

"Jam" with Roland JD-XA and TR-808

Published on Nov 9, 2017 Machiwoomiapoo

"'Jam' with Roland JD-XA and TR-808
Here's my first tune with the JD-XA. I'm very surprised at the variety of sounds in it. I pre-programmed the TR-808 and the BASS line with the MSQ-700. Then I played the 'aJuno; (Kebu) patch for the pluck type sound. Next I added the 'Massive Pads' patch for the chords. Finally I used the 'Pomoma' patch for the lead. Thanks for listening."

Quantum Sequencer

"What's New in Version 1.3
. Bug Fixes
. Reverse loop type now resets to end step - was causing an issue with master/slave sync
. Mixer Link was not working with just one sequence with parts
. Can now touch controls above step options & chord panels when open
. Chromatic step notes now selectable with faders & inc/dec buttons.
. Sequencer Audiobus Midi option was not opening Devices panel
. Enhancements
. Addednotes/Chords now work on relative velocity & gate again 0..100% of step note setting
. Step Trigger Conditions: Mute, Skip or MuteChords on every nth loop. You can also invert n so trigger applies on loops other than n.
. select mode no longer restricts controls to be accessed with selection
. Sequences no longer default to Master or Slave but None. Change in Setup panel
. Audiobus 3.0.3 sdk
. new sequences now default to midi override ch = slot. Copy/paste/load leaves untouched. Show Channel button now warns if ch override applies
. New Option Midi MMC start/stop allows external hardware (e.g. Arturia beatsteps) to start & stop & reset the song playback. You can use this with Slave mode (and enable midi clock on the input) to follow the external hardware tempo (beatstep seq mode). If you have an IOS app that sends midi MMC you can do this on device. Note : IOS apps like AUM do not send midi MMC only respond to it.
This only applies to coreMidi not AB3 midi at the moment - will probably add later.
. Time interval faders now show total time (in step fractions) under title - as a guide to overall seq/part length
. iphone X support"
