Altura MkII Theremin MIDI Controller / Arpeggiator / Step Sequencer

Published on Aug 8, 2019 Zeppelin Design Labs

"The Altura MkII is a MIDI controller that emulates a theremin: wave your hands to unlock amazing MIDI possibilities:

It's an ARPEGGIATOR / STEP SEQUENCER -- Easily program any sequence up to 8 steps, including rests and sustains; then play your sequence loops by just waving your hand! Your right hand deterimines the starting note of the arpeggio. As you move your hand, the pattern plays up and down the scale, always within the key you select. Set the tempo with the Tap Time button. Now wave your left hand to switch to double-time or half-time.

It's a THEREMIN -- Connect to any synthesizer and wave your hands to control pitch, volume, bend, modulation, velocity and portamento time. If your synth responds to portamento. such as the Macchiato Mini Synth by Zeppelin Design, you can recreate that spooky, sliding Theremin sound--but you will always play in tune!

It's a MIDI CONTROLLER -- In X-Y mode, set any two CC#'s and wave to transmit any range of values.

Easy DIY Kit or Ready-to-Play. Watch our tutorial videos to see it in action!"

"Buchla Music Easel/ Portable analog synthesizer (BEMI). Condition is Used. Single Owner. Non-smoking studio. Includes original box, packaging, and all cables, power cord and bars. I've purchased a few extras that I'll toss in (cables and shorting bars) along with a Synovatron CVGT1 Eurorack module with original box. All cards that came with it are included and unsoldered & unused. Everything seems to work fine, but sold as-is/no returns. There was an issue with the headphone jack, but I replaced the part after receiving a new part from Foxtone Music, the original seller (purchased October 2017 new). Very easy fix. Less than five hours of play time. I do Apologize for high s&h, but item is coming from Hawaii. S&H to U.S.A. only. Signature Confirmation Required."

Jam Session with "Frank Piesik - ElectroCaster" Modular Guitar

Guitar & DrumBeats: Frank Piesik
Matrix Piano: Digithalis

Published on Jun 28, 2019 Frank Piesik

Details on the ElectroCaster:

"Compared to this whole world of electronic sound devices like eurorack-modules, drummashines and all this innovative stuff from big and small companies, the electric guitar market looks a little bit boring.

I play guitar but I also like those new ways of making music and I believe that a guitar could integrate great into an electronic music setup. It just needs a kind of redesign - what's technically possible shoud be done, as long as it stays to be a guitar.

Here is my proposal for an open, modular guitar-synth-design with some nifty features to make modern music."

Oxford Synthesizer Company OSCar Repair - Synthchaser #121

"Have look inside and listen to a rare Oxford Synthesizer Company OSCar synth as we make a handful of repairs to it. We'll convert it from 220V to 110V operation, change the power cord, correct the power wiring, clean the pots, replace the leaking battery with a safer solution, eliminate hum in the output, replace missing buttons, replace a sketchy connector, and fix some intermittent issue where the synth jumps back to preset #1.

Parts, service and synthesizers available on my website. I buy broken synthesizers!"

LambdaSpeak 3 - Amstrad / Schneider CPC MIDI IN Synthesizer Demo

Published on Aug 7, 2019 Michael Wessel

Demo comes in at 1:18. This is a follow-up to the LambdaSpeak & LambdaDrum for the Amstrad CPC post here.

"Good news - the LambdaSpeak 3 Serial Interface is now versatile and fast enough to support MIDI IN in real time!

The Akai Miniak synthesizer shown in this video is only used as a MIDI controller, and it is the CPC that is actually producing the sound that you hear, NOT the Miniak.

Hence, LambdaSpeak's MIDI IN DIN socket receives MIDI NOTE ON / NOTE OFF messages from the Miniak, and the CPC is running a simple 'CPC MIDI Synthesizer' machine code program that interprets the MIDI messages and turns them into sound, via the internal CPC GI AY-3-8910 soundchip.

Besides this, MIDI OUT also already works with LambdaSpeak 3, and it can even be programmed from BASIC. Regarding MIDI IN, the CPC is fast enough to do the MIDI real time processing as demonstrated in this video with no latency, provided a machine code program is used.

This 'CPC MIDI Synthesizer' machine code program will be extended soon to also process note velocity, pitch bend MIDI controller, as well as 3 channel polyphony and program change messages for changing the sound.

Stay tuned for updates!

I will put the 'CPC MIDI Synthesizer' program on the LambdaSpeak LS300.DSK on the Github page for reference. Please note that you will require the latest LambdaSpeak 3 firmware to run it."

Transposing inside a Scale in VCV Rack

Update: mention of new designs coming from Access gets a brief mention starting at 25:25. Their last synth of course was the Access Virus Ti2. Axel does state it might not be what people are hoping for, striking out the notion of a new Access Virus.

Fascinating history on the start of both Axel Hartmmann's career designing synths and Waldorf. The first synth he designed? The Waldorf Microwave, followed by the massive Waldorf Wave - two Microwaves with full control panel and keyboard.

"While we were in Berlin for the Superbooth show, we had the chance to talk to some interesting folks as part of our Meet The Makers Series:

Electronic Sound Issue 56 Magazine & CD Bundle Featuring EMS

via Electronic Sound

"We have a superb issue for you this month. And that’s not only because we have an exclusive interview with Kraftwerk main man Ralf Hütter, although since Hütter rarely talks to the press that is clearly something a bit special.

Our cover feature details the history of EMS, the legendary UK synthesiser company founded by Peter Zinovieff, Tristram Cary and David Cockerell in 1969. What started out as a vehicle to fund Zinovieff’s studio became a decade-long adventure in synthesis with a very British sense of innovation about it. EMS machines like the VCS 3 and the Synthi AKS were responsible for some of the best known electronic music of the 1970s – from the Radiophonic Workshop to Brian Eno to Pink Floyd.

We also have a weighty report on the recent Bluedot Festival, featuring Kraftwerk, New Order, Jon Hopkins, John Grant and more. Our interview with Ralf Hütter took place backstage after the Kraftwerk set, with Hütter radiating urbane charm and wry humour as he chatted about music and science and sampling and cycling. “We are not a museum, so let’s play what we do,” he declares. “My art is music.”

Other interviews this issue include Haiku Salut, Eric Random, Jah Wobble & Bill Laswell, Paranoid London, Rolo McGinty from The Woodentops. Plus, of course, we have our packed front section, our ace regular columnists, and our usual exotic feast of new album reviews. Hit the link to order your copy straight away!

Limited Edition CD Album: ‘The Sounds of EMS’

This month’s audio accompaniment is ‘The Sounds Of EMS’, a fascinating 45-minute CD of music made either by the people responsible for EMS, or by the machines they built. You can almost smell the dust burning as the old circuits start warming up! The CD has two pieces by Peter Zinovieff and another from Tristram Cary, the latter with a spoken explanation of what he wanted to achieve with the piece. There are also tracks by David Vorhaus (who founded the cult electronic group White Noise with Delia Derbyshire), Mike Hankinson (another early adopter of the VCS 3), Benge from Wrangler and Jack Dangers from Meat Beat Manifesto.

01. PETER ZINOVIEFF – ‘A LOLLIPOP FOR PAPA’
02. TRISTRAM CARY – ‘ 3, 4, 5 – A STUDY IN LIMITED RESOURCES’
03. BENGE – ‘1969 EMS VCS3’
04. DAVID VORHAUS – ‘THING FOR TWO VCS3S’
05. JACK DANGERS @ TAPE LAB – ‘SYNTHI 100-PIECE 1’
06. MIKE HANKINSON – ‘JS BACH’S FUGUE AND TOCCATA IN D MINOR’
07. PETER ZINOVIEFF – ‘JANUARY TENSIONS’ (EXCERPT)

CCTV-Quadtec 101 Digital dual quadraphonic oscillator first sound

Published on Aug 8, 2019 Dziam Bass

"Today I have the first sound from the Quadtec 101 digital dual oscillator.

This is a module offering a quadraphone, but initially I did not use the full show when I wave through the pan placing it on the speakers. this patch was more about the sound itself and also quite interesting sequences when one sequencer controls this patch and the sound from one oscillator I raise and lower almost like transpositions ...
This is a great module because it extends the possibilities of creating new sequences or spaces and moving between two oscillators"

"This is a dynamite little beast that was originally intended as an add-on voice and sequencer for the SH-101. It's pre-MIDI, but has 5-pin DIN Sync connections on the back for wiring together with other Roland products of the era (TB-303, TR-808, TR-707, etc). The two sequencer channels control an external device and the internal synth, but there are two sets of CV and Gate outputs so both can control external synths if desired. There are also CV and Gate inputs for playing the internal synth voice with an external keyboard.

As you can see from the photos, it's in absolutely immaculate condition, and comes with original box and power supply."

Changing the Synthstrom Deluge 3.0 Panel

Published on Aug 8, 2019 Olivier Ozoux

"I'm glad I already took my Deluge apart before, because I knew what I was getting into when I ordered the new 3.0 layout as a panel instead of the overlay. But as long as you're careful and follow the instructions, changing the panel is pretty easy. Also, I made a quick overview of the label changes on the new panel. Enjoy, and don't ask if it's worth it."

The second example is Pico VCO2 in sequences with Pico SEQ2 a new analogue 2/4 step sequencer, Pico BBD and Pico LPG- for several filtering sounds, below also for FAT sound I added Pico DSP (distortion mode).
the third example is Pico VCO2 with Pico SEQ2 and Pico VCF3 filter plus Pico DSP distortion.

808 Day: The 'New York' Roland TR-808

Published on Aug 7, 2019 RolandChannel

"Pioneer New York City hip-hop producer, Larry Smith, joined Arthur Baker and Rick Rubin as a champion of the 808 sound. His personal Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer quickly earned a reputation as having THAT sound and become the rhythmic signature on iconic albums and tracks from Run DMC, Beastie Boys and Whodini.

This story follows this 'New York' TR-808 as it passed hands from the late Larry Smith to his son and producer, Larry Smith Jr, and Rashad Smith for this iconic 808 sound to continue on in modern productions. The TR-808 travels to Los Angeles and 1500 Sound Academy and introduced to the future generation of producers and beatmakers who hear an original TR-808 for the first time.

Each year, on August 8, we celebrate 808 Day and join the global community in the celebration of the music and culture that grew from the love for the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer. Join the celebration by tagging your stories with #808day and experience other stories from around the world."
