Korg Introduces New i3 Music Workstation

Published on Jan 8, 2020 Korg

Korg released the first i3 Interactive Music Workstation back in 1993.   Curious why they kept the i3 name.

"With the i3 Music Workstation, your musical themes and phrases catch fire and quickly explode into complete ready-to-play productions. Grouping sounds, beats, and parts together by Sound Set and Style Performance Set streamlines the creative process, providing a shortcut to choosing the right sounds and pulling together the right beats and grooves. On-board effects and EQ tailor the sound for any performance. The sequencer records, saves, and plays both MIDI and audio files – you can even play along. Self-contained, simple to use, and fun to play, the i3 is the ideal synth for the budding composer, the energetic performer, or the inspired up-and-coming producer. Using battery power, the KORG i3 Music Workstation can run wherever you run; a convenient auto-power off function preserves battery life."

"I purchased this ESQ-1 brand new in the box from Skip's Music in Sacramento in 1987. I'm not a keyboard player per se, but I had a lot of fun making songs with the sequencer to accompany my other instruments. This keyboard has never giged or used in any location than my homes. Since it was an auxillary instrument for me, it didn't get played much over the years and none for the last 13 years, so it's in about as good condition as you could ever hope to find. About a year or two ago I installed a new Panasonic battery, as the original battery became dead. The keyboard powers up normally, all of the functions work perfectly and the keys are not chipped, cracked, broken or even worn. Aside from a few small scuffs, it's super clean. I always kept a dust cover over it.

Happily, it comes with 12 original ensoniq sound cartridges (very rare) and they all work. I've included a printout of the lists of sounds on each cartridge. It comes with the start/stop pedal, power cord, and two extra MIDI cords as well as the original paperwork and cassette tape. I seem to have misplaced the owner's manual, but it's available online for free. You can also have the keyboard stand that I bought last year."

Is Behringer's WASP Deluxe a Clone of a Clone?

Thought this was interesting. Take a look at the front panels.

The top is the original EDP WASP Deluxe.

The middle is the Jasper clone.

The bottom is the Behringer WASP Deluxe.

Note the knob layout for each.

Clone of a clone? Depends on the internals. Reminds me of the original Technology Transplant (Cyclone Analogic) TB-303 and x0xb0x clones - see this post. This is also worth a read.

Update: Note the ENV hold switch, ENH waveshape in the oscillator section, and Noise level knob on the Jasper & Behringer clones. They are in the exact same locations yet completely absent on the original. These were introduced in the Jasper.

NOIR - Presets for Continua (Desktop and iOS)

Published on Jan 8, 2020 SonalSystem

SonalSystem Presents: NOIR - Presets for Continua

Audio Damage’s new Continua Virtual Analog Synthesizer [announced here] has broken through wavetable ubiquity in creating a modern synth with highly controllable waveform morphing at the center of its architecture and workflow. This synth opens inventive new doors for creatives moving in the must-be-unique design space. That is our space.

COMPLEX ROUTINGS
Enter SonalSystem NOIR, a collection of 80 original presets created specifically for Continua. These presets are custom crafted for Continua’s focus on super smooth waveform morphing and sophisticated yet accessible modulation. We designed these presets to deliver ingratiating sounds however they are modulated, through the oscillators, filters and effects, and even as you tweak the parameters of the modulators themselves.

FROM CINEMA TO ALBUM
Our presets satisfy a spectrum of sound styles for designers with varied proclivities. Entertain your penchant for ambient environments. Get raucous with heavy hitting industrial styles. Commence a new cinematic chronicle. Indulge the tastes of electronic slow-burn. As you further engage the virtually endless morphing capabilities, you’ll come upon diverse sounds destined for integration into your next sonic showpiece.

ULTIMATE EXPRESSION
NOIR is MPE ready and pre-mapped for users with MPE capable controllers. This technology allows virtually every iteration to be dimensionally altered in real time, resulting in an expressive array of disarming and insinuating sounds. By “playing” each note, each preset awakens in a deeply imagistic way as your creation becomes increasingly indicative of your own personality.

*NOIR is available in iOS and PC versions. These 80 presets work in Continua with or without an MPE controller.

Tech Specs:
80 Premium presets for Audio Damage's Continua
Complex routing schemes of LFO, S&H, and Macros for evolving sounds
Categorized by type: Bass, Drones, Leads, Motion, and Pad
Enhanced sound manipulation with MPE mappings.

"This auction is for the one Korg/Univox FK-1 controller, one original five pin connector cable for the foot controller (foot controller not included in this auction), one original owner's manual with warranty cards, one original "Demonstration Disc" Eva-Tone Soundsheet record, and the original box in the pictures only. I was told by the store owner's son that this synth pedal was used as a sales floor demo unit and never sold. At some point the original remote controller pedal was removed from the box and sold. The unit does work without the controller pedal. You just aren't able to control the wah features without it. Fortunately, these remote control pedals show up here on eBay every once in a while. This synth pedal has been tested and is working. Cosmetically, the synth pedal has a few scratches between the IN and OUT jacks and the EXPAND controls but otherwise the unit looks like new (see pictures). The original box shows wear (see pictures)."

"Recently serviced and given a clean bill of health from our techs here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Prophet is the final iteration of the synth that shaped the '80s and revolutionized the industry, having been subsequently outfitted with MIDI. Founded by Dave Smith in 1974, Sequential Circuits forever changed music technology with the advent of the Prophet 5, which broke new ground as not only the first polyphonic synthesizer to enable players to store and recall presets, but also as the first musical instrument with an embedded microprocessor.

The Prophet 5 features five voice polyphony, and for its principal sound sources each voice contains two VCO's (voltage controlled oscillators), OSC A and OSC B, in addition to a white noise source which can be mixed into a resonant low-pass VCF (voltage controlled filter). The filter modifies the voice timbre under control of its four-stage envelope generator. The filter may also be resonated and serve as a sound source. Following each filter, a VCA (voltage controlled amplifier), also controlled by a four-stage envelope generator, shapes the voice amplitude. Supplementing the basic voices are polyphonic modulation (POLY-MOD) signal routings within each voice that allow OSC B and the filter envelope generator to function as modulation sources applied to OSC A frequency or pulse width, or the filter frequency. Finally, there is a single LFO (low-frequency oscillator) and a pink noise source which can be mixed to modulate all five voices, as adjusted by the MOD wheel. The analog filters, envelope, and LFO are all extremely rich sounding and notably flexible, and the Prophet 5 boasts patch memory storage as well, which scans and memorizes every knob setting for storing and recalling your sounds.

LMNC : Building the Kosmo 1222 Performance VCO

Published on Jan 8, 2020 LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER BUT MORE SERIOUS ISH

"The 1222 Performance VCO is my first Oscillator PCB Design.
Born from frustration of playing shows, or not having a tuner to hand and getting in tune enough to get going, instead of sitting around being out of tune. I tested it on my November tour, and did some fine tweaks to it afterwards.

Its also got an octave knob. a fine tune knob that is exactly an octave with a centre point of C making it easy to find the note you need. it is a rather standard oscillator apart from that, and in my opinion thats what you need.

Big simple controls, pulse width, PWM, fine tune, Extra CV, Sync, FM, Square, Ramp and Triangle outputs.

It also has a rear connection called LINK, which will be for future use, as i will be making an oscillator drive a nice means of driving lots of oscillators at once, as well as a mixer module so no need to patch all of the oscillators together they will be connected from the back. A final design is like a cross mod module that will turn em into a sort of fart box thing. This is all future ideas, but if you cant wait check the schematic it will make sense!

The build is reasonably simple it is explained in videos below. you will need to be able to connect an arduino nano to a computer, the code is available below.

Temperature drift. unknowingly i took these on tour to the extremes of temperatures. they spent most of their time in a 0 degrees celsius van, giving it plenty of time to cool the whole case through. then they were carried into room temperature rooms and immediately sound-checked. Then they slowly heat up throughout the night, and as more people enter the room the hotter the room gets and the hotter the case and oscillators get. the change in tune wasnt massive, only a few cents but i was very thankful for the tuners.. I noticed this effect more at smaller gigs than larger gig. i guess smaller rooms heat up more like a big old oven.

Anyway below is everything you need. any questions fire over, at the bottom is an FAQ with past problems/questions.

The Bill of materials links are the first i got to, if you look around you may find cheaper, these are UK also. if anyone in the US makes a mouser cart, please send my way it would be useful! i will try to make one, however there is no telling when that will happen.

below is the first video on this module, this was before tour, these prototypes i took on tour and they are largely the same as the finished things. The tuner code is a tad more finessed, plus i didn’t spend ages calibrating these!."

Audio Damage Introduces Continua Virtual Analog Synthesizer for Windows, macOS & iPad

Introduction Published on Jan 8, 2020 Audio Damage, Inc.

"A brief overview of Continua, a virtual analog synthesizer for your Windows, macOS, or iPadOS music-making. Continua bucks the current trend of Robocop wavetable synths to bring you a somewhat more chill environment. Morphing oscillators and filters ease your sonic environment in to place, while custom chorus, delay, and reverb algorithms blend it in to a huge and complex soundspace.

Full MPE implementation and modulation routing for days make Continua an incredibly expressive synthesizer, while TUN file loading allows explorations outside equal temperament. A true player's synth, Continua is both bedrock and atmosphere. Try the demo at http://www.audiodamage.com today!"
