Upcoming John Bowen Solaris v2.0 Update Adds Yamaha FM & Casio CZ Phase Distortion Synthesis

http://johnbowen.com

John Bowen dropped by the other day with the Solaris Desktop prototype. Not only did I get a peek at the new design, but I was able to take a look at the upcoming v2.0 OS, which adds both Yamaha style "FM synthesis" and Casio's CZ Phase Distortion synthesis. It also adds multi-part support. You'll find a few pics in this post. Apologies for the lighting but it is dark in the studio. :) Below you'll find a few angled shots of the desktop. In person it's not as large as I had expected. It's similar to an Oberheim Xpander which seems appropriate considering their similarities. Both have multiple displays and have been described as essentially modulars in a box. From what I understand, the Solaris is a bit more flexible as you can essentially re-order the signal path. It's a pretty amazing synth. John Bowen opted for a high resolution 96kHz signal path and you can hear it. The Solaris sounds absolutely astonishing. It has four oscillators with a vector joystick to morph between them. You can also cycle through oscillator waveforms up into the audio range with the unique "Rotors" feature on the Solaris. Click here for a full list of current features. Note the v2.0 features aren't yet listed.

The Solaris has four oscillators allowing for a 4-OP FM synth. If you are familiar with Yamaha FM synthesis you know you select how each operator modulates the other from various algorithms. On the Solaris, however, you can freely map oscillators any way you like, including back into each other. The Solaris is essentially modular, allowing you to freely route components of the synth engine. Aside from FM and Phase Distortion, the new OS also adds an assignable 4-part multi mode. Assignable not only by patch, but by number of voices allocated to each part. The following is what John had to say about the upcoming OS:

"v2.0 OS will add a new Oscillator Type called Phase Mod. This allows for true 'DX style FM,' which is actually phase modulation. With four oscillators, you can create 4 Operator algorithms. It also includes waveshapes emulating the CZ Phase Distortion series. The modulation destination which normally shows as LinFM changes to PhasMod when this oscillator type is selected. For the CZ series, the Shape parameter controls the amount of phase distortion.

The new Multimode code allows for 4-part arrangement. Each part shares a common 'voice pool' of 5 pairs of voices (total of 10), and you decide how many voices can be assigned to each part, with 2 voices in a part as the minimum assignment. (Using identical presets with the new Solaris Voice Expander module adds another 10 voices.)

The Multimode structure converts old presets into a larger preset structure that holds the parameters for all 4 parts. All edits to any parameter are stored separately, so any preset used to populate a part from any other preset is not affected, and remains a separate object. Each of the 4 parts provides control over velocity and key zoning, volume level, pan position, transpose, fine tuning, arpeggiator function, and a number of other MIDI controller settings."

Novation // Patricia Wolf - Profile

Published on Feb 28, 2020 NovationTV

"In this video, Patricia Wolf discusses how she takes a two-stage approach to sound design. “In one way, I focus on the technical aspects of it, especially when there’s new features on a synthesizer that I’m not so familiar with. So I’ll play around with that and really think about what it’s doing.” Then, once she’s familiar with her machines and their respective capabilities, she’ll free herself from thinking on a purely technical point of view and consider her machines as an ecosystem, playing in harmony. 'It’s nice to let go of that technicality and just think of it as a living, electric energy that you can morph and change and start feeling for its creative potential.'"

New BugBrand Modules

Note the following is from the BugBrand email list so it's a bit less formal.

"The news front has been quiet this winter - it has felt like a time for contemplation, catching & tidying up - but now Spring is approaching, always so welcome, and ideas can start to stretch & emerge.

First, there are a few new modules coming out - slowly for now, with little push/promo - systems keep on growing around the world:
Quadrature Sine - an updated version of the old pre-2013, a pure oscillator/LFO producing Sine & Cosine
Matrix - 6 inputs to 4 outputs - for CV or audio
DC Mixer - a nice little utility for signal mixing (+ inversion & offset)

Something that has been bubbling in my mind for some time (and helped along through discussions with my ever wonderful assistant, Jasmine) - a mixture of letting go, opening up, setting up experiments, planting seeds. I've long enjoyed the mix of technical (system design, studio routing) balanced against the more creative (playing the audio clay of a system), but find I rarely get enough time to dive deep into play & recording, along with wonderings on how I can involve others.

Slowly, slowly I wish to get people in to the studio to play & experiment - to see how people use the machines, to feel around how best to explain the technical sides, to be open to the many sounds which arise. Now we observe the early steps - the first visitor came in yesterday and left somewhat hypnotised! I do not know what might arise and that is exciting. So I plant this seed of an idea with few preconceptions - I want to explore it gradually & look forward to the conversations & meetings that might occur through it. The logistics are TBC - the approach is open.

In other bits of news:
Next month, 21st March, Machina Bristronica (organised by Elevator Sound) is happening again in Bristol. A massive gathering of audio machines! I think I will be positioned next to old friend & fellow Bristol synthesist/designer George Hearn & his wonderful UDO polysynth - finally I will get to try it!
http://machinabristronica.uk/
Here's a little Youtube recording from last week: [Posted here]
On the stock & production front - the Corona virus is definitely having something of an impact & we just have to roll with it. Board production is very slow at the moment - no massive problem at present, but we'll have to see how it all goes.

Currently - visit the online shop:
The last DRM2 for now is online! I'll aim to do another board run soon, but could take some months..
StereoCompress - another batch is being made right now so should be out within 2 weeks
SynthVoices & other modular setups are somewhat limited due to waiting on Dual Envelope & Dual Filter production - but lots of other modules ready on the shelf & I can always do frames etc.
I think that covers most of the news for now!

Best wishes to all!
Tom"

It is the same synthesizer as the SIEL EX-80 and uses the same parameters and MIDI CCs for control.

The synthesizer is in good condition and it works as it should, however it has an audible hum whenever you play it. I never had the time (or budget) to take it to a technician to have it checked. I already have a couple of poly synthesizers so this one is redundant in my setup.

FIVE MINUTES WITH - XAOC Devices Odessa

Published on Feb 28, 2020 sonicstate

"XAOC Devices Odessa is a - wait for it - Variable Spectrum Harmonic Cluster Oscillator. An interesting FPGA based module. Edd takes us on a 5 Minute journey through it's sonic landscape.

It uses the principle of additive synthesis controlled by a set of carefully tailored macro parameters to harness thousands of sinusoidal partials that altogether form the resulting sound. The series of harmonics can be squeezed or spread apart, tilted, and pruned by a comb-like frequency response, resulting in a variety of unearthly sounds. Furthermore the VCO provides Through-zero linear FM and detuneable clusters of up to five voices."

Exploring the Synthy Side of the Nord Drum 2 - the Scale Preset mode

Published on Feb 28, 2020 NONsynth

"I've got my hands on another Nord Drum 2 and I now want to make a deeper exploration of its synthyness. In this test vid I use the Midibro in dispatcher mode to send single channel midi notes to the multiple channels of the ND2, turning it into a polysynth. I used the Edit Group settings to link all six channels and edit them as one.

What are you seeing in this vid? Well, digging through the manual led me to this (wtf) description of the "Scl Pre" mode:

"Use the Scl Pre feature with an Edit Group
to quickly set up different pitch relationships
between pads.

The pitches will begin at the set pitch on the
lowest numbered channel in the Edit Group
and increase with a factor determined by the
selected scale on the selected channels.

If a Scale has been used to set a pitch
relationship, you can change the pitch of one
channel without breaking the pitch relationship.
This will move all the other pitches until
one of the pitches reaches the maximum, or
minimum pitch (“0” or “127.5”)."

And so begins my experimentation."
