Korg 05R/W rock demo (1995) - Don Muro

Published on Mar 28, 2020 jd wall

“A basic rock groove recorded live in 20 minutes (just before lunch) during a sequencing seminar. One take for each track - hence the improvised and organic quality (loose time and clams). All sounds produced by the 05R/W. Repeated with the solo track muted so that participants could practice pitch bend techniques.

A brief sonic diversion for these dark days.

Cheers,

"Last week we started a series of streaming concerts from our studios. We also suffer from some canceled concerts but streaming gives us the possibility to work with all our gear which no booker ever would pay us to bring. So this provides a different and unique experience for the audience. This one is my solo project Notstandskomitee creating and performing a whole set on the Eurorack modular, driven by the XOR Nerd Seq tracker like sequencer.

"Imaginando brings us an impressive combination of granular and traditional synthesis in a powerhouse combination. This video is a bit unlike others in this series. Due to the complexity of FRMS, I didn't try going into this with a clear plan. I just wanted to document the sound design process. Which honestly turned into a train wreck that lasted over an hour. I've done some aggressive editing on this to bring it down to less than 30 minutes.

I think it still retains all of the essential information. I hope it reveals that the process of creating a patch doesn't always go smoothly, but if you take your time and explore you will be rewarded! I love the final result!

Submerged (Eurorack Redux) - Absence by Time_Controlled_Organism

"Eurorack minimalist version of the opening track from my latest e.p on bandcamp

https://timecontrolledorganism.bandca...

Sequenced by VCV Rack of course (using "virtual"cv/midi, sent to Mutant Brain for converting back to "true" CV) , you can hear some anti-oscillator, mangrove, RS serge VCFQ, doepfer SEM filter...

I also play with the VCV Console and 3 instances of Chronoblob , using a nanokontrol."

"On these tracks I wanted to focus on :

-melodies alternating from minor to major

-odd rythmic patterns but with a sense of repetition, vinyl drum samples.

As always the songs are sequenced using a quite complex arrangement of simple sequencers and switches, each track has some "generative" parts.

Since my last e.p I've learned to code a bit and developed my own VCV Rack modules under the name LifeFormModular, they are the main sequencers, switches, lfo's and oscillators at use here.
I also used Bidoo Sample Player and Vult filters.

My music and modules are free, but if you want to support me please consider donating a bit when you download a release on Bandcamp.

200+ Free Roland TR-909 Samples

via https://bvker.com

"Since producing my last sample pack “LoFi House” (which is mainly based on sounds from old drum machines and analog synths) was so much fun I couldn’t help but continue working on analog drum sounds. Now I’m giving away some free 909 samples & loops. Click on the button above to get access or scroll down a bit to learn more about the pack:

The TR-909 Rhythm Composer (invented by Tadao Kikumoto) is without any doubt one of the most iconic drum machines ever made. It was first manufactured in 1983 by Roland and had along with the TB-303 synth a huge impact on the development of genres, such as house, acid house or techno.

Whereas its predecessor, the Roland TR-808 is rather known for a clean sound and a long sub bass, the 909 comes with a punchy and saturated drum sound.

The drum machine is most famous for its dirty kick drum and open hat which is usually placed between the kick hits. Furthermore, the 909 is known for a shuffle mode, which moves notes slightly off-grid, resulting in a certain “groove”. This groove can additionally be adjusted using the “flam” and “accent” features.

Considering that the 909 was a milestone in the history of dance music (although it financially flopped) it’s clear that you can find its sounds in countless records.

From today’s perspective the 909 sound is rather old school, so I decided to adapt my free 909 samples to the requirements of current productions using a variety of modern processing tools.

I made sure, however, to also include some rather lo-fi or old sounding samples, some of which are strongly saturated, so you can use the kit for a variety of different styles.

In addition to the one shots I also made 20 drum loops, that I stemmed out in different groups resulting in a total of 100 TR-909 loops."

Vintage ARP Odyssey 1972 Mk. I + Full Patch Points + Cirocco Mods!

via this auction

"Arp Odyssey Mk. I 1972, full patch points + Cirocco (C.M.S.) mods

Mods too many to list, but include (highlights):
Full patch points -- all main section outputs and all slider inputs
"Turbo" envelope switch, for true snappy (2600 style) envelopes
LFO free run
Back panel CV/gate controls
External audio input
A full set of mods can be seen from the picture. Mods were performed by #1 worldwide Arp tech Phil Cirocco (the guy who fixes/restores 2500's).

I should mention that another design quirk of the original Odyssey -- the delay between VCA and VCF gate times, has been eliminated!

Without this critical fix, no matter how fast the envelope times, it would have sounded slow due to the VCF gate delay. Not so here, the envelope is ultra-fast with the "Turbo" setting, and also sounds better and cleaner with the normal setting. This is what is meant by "true 2600 style envelopes" -- multiple coordinated modifications here really take this synth into a completely different category.

What you get is the 'best of both worlds'. You get additional features and sound of the early 1970's Mk. I Odyssey (much warmer early 1970’s oscillators, sweet filter resonance, hard sync), with the back-end snappiness and sonic character of the Arp 2600. On many patches the result actually sounds better than the stock 2600."

Korg MS-10 and Four Track Tape - Cinematic Synth Ambient Music

Published on Mar 28, 2020 ChrisLody

"I've been meaning to try this four way split screen video technique for a while since I learned it is possible in Reaper and this project was a good candidate seeing as it's 4 layers of Korg MS-10 recorded to 4 track tape. It's also a nice way to get a hi res video going even though I only ever shoot at 720p, this is 1440p :)

So here I'm using the Korg MS-10 with a custom built expander that I'm using to add another saw and square oscillator and a high pass filter in this video. 4 layers are recorded onto the Fostex XR-3 four track tape recorder and then Zoom 1201 reverb is added. The waves sounds are from a field recording I made on Minidisc at Skegness beach of crashing waves."

I'm using Pamela's very slow square wave modulation to change the frequency of Rings' plucks and another LFO to raise the blend of Clouds for an extra layer of sound.
Marbles receives the clock from Pamela and provides the notes to Rings."

Arturia MicroFreak, Korg NTS-1, Bounce Jam

Published on Mar 27, 2020 Waveformer

"The Arturia MicroFreak takes the Korg NTS-1 for a stroll, with the brilliant Wave oscillator and beautiful Submarine reverb of the NTS-1.

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

The patch for the MicroFreak is included below.

I use the MicroFreak arpeggiator with maximum spice and frequent dice. The NTS-1 arpeggiator is set to random and switched from off to on to hold during the jam.

During the jam, I play with filter cutoff and resonance, cyclic envelope fall time and mod amount, envelope decay and filter amunt on the MicroFreak. On the NTS-1, I play with filter cutoff, oscillator shape and bit crush.

The MicroFreak always transmits MIDI velocity, and I find it a bit hard to precisely control this using the MicroFreak keyboard. The NTS-1 receives velocity and it modulates the oscillator amplitude directly, from 0 to max. In this jam, those (almost) random variations in oscillator amplitude work pretty well, as I'm using the MicroFreak arpeggiator. But I tried playing a solo on the MicroFreak while it was connected to the NTS-1, and I found it very hard to play with consistent velocity.

Also, when I turn on the arpeggiator on the NTS-1, big changes in velocity makes the oscillator make a clicking noise. I wish Korg would fix this in a firmware update for the NTS-1. That kind of clicking isn't very musical.

Other than that, it was really fun to use the two synths together. The effect section on the NTS-1 is really excellent, and fits the MicroFreak very well. Also having the MicroFreak control the NTS-1 over MIDI makes me feel like the NTS-1 is a second oscillator for the MicroFreak.

There's no way to share NTS-1 patches yet, so here's as much of the patch that I can remember. Oscillator type Wave, Wave b 17, Bit crush 40. Filter type LP2, Cutoff 50%, Resonance 0%, Rate 9Hz, Depth 25%. Env type ADSR, Release 75%. Modulator off. Arpeggiator type random, Octave, Tempo 69 BPM, Pattern length 3.

The MicroFreak patch is named "BounceWF", and can be downloaded from the files section of the Arturia MicroFreak facebook group.

The audio is recorded on a Korg KP2S and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on iPhoneX. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 15.
