Away | Spectralis and Virus TI downtempo IDM

video upload by MIDERA

"Song 1 of 4 from a recent show

My studio is a mess. Nothing connected. It was a struggle to reconnect my Spectralis and Virus, which had been sitting in their cases since I went out to do a live show early October. A few days after my show was done our refrigerator died (and we realized we had been eating spoiled food) and then a few days later I had to put my cat Pivot down. It hadn't been the best month.

I've listed all sorts of gear locally to sell - because my studio is just too cluttered. I don't think I can really store my stuff in a way that makes any sense, so it should just go - but no one seems interested (locally). Maybe I'd regret selling the gear - but also, I regret having it all too.

Therapsid mk3 (multitimbral sequencing)

video upload by

"Hi this a track I converted to sequence the Therapsid.

Disclaimer this Therapsid was sent to me by Twisted Electrons and I spent so long working with them to get the firmware all working nicely so it worked as expected from someone that uses c64's as well as synths, I'm going to mark it as a paid promotion anyway though.

The track is called 'There's still time' , I originally made it on a Digitakt using samples. Here it is being sequenced by a Dirtywave M8.

I have quite a few clips of the Therapsid on my instagram if you would like to see them as the firmware progressed to where it is today.

Find my content entertaining or helpful? you can make my day by buying one of my songs at https://avrilcadabra.bandcamp.com/rel..."

Knobcon 23:Circuit Happy Missing Link Junior

video upload by sonicstate

"Back at KnobCon 2023, (yeah we know its been a while - lets just say there was data recovery in play) Ed Guild from Circuit Happy unveiled their latest innovation, the Missing Link Junior.

The Missing Link Junior is the successor to the original Missing Link Desktop, which faced challenges in production due to parts shortages and manufacturing issues. To overcome these hurdles, Ed went back to the drawing board and completely rebuilt the device, leveraging the hardware platform of their previous product, ML2. The result is a clock generator with enhanced robustness, addressing previous jitter issues.

This new hardware promises a seamless clock output, ensuring precision in synchronization for music production. The Missing Link Junior features Ableton Link integration, allowing it to synchronize with other devices over Wi-Fi, even if they are not running Ableton Live, making it an essential tool for any musician looking to maintain tempo and timing consistency during performances. The device also boasts a handy safety feature that allows users to reset synced devices in case they fall out of sync. With a proper MIDI port and analog sync outputs, the Missing Link Junior offers a more modular-centric option for those looking to expand their music setup.

The product is expected to hit the shelves in two to three weeks, with a price tag of $240 USD, while the previous model, ML2, is priced at $215 USD.

For more information on the Missing Link Junior and Circuit Happy's range of music production tools, visit their website at Circuit Happy."

FLUORINE - GENERATIVE RECURSIVE BYTEBEATS - Preview

video upload by SPHERICAL SOUND SOCIETY

FLUORINE UNEDITED PERCUSSIVE JAM DEMO

"Fluorine is portable synthesizer that is powered via USB C type cable and therefore can be powered via a Power Bank. It´s a high definition modern take on a classic 8 bit synthesis called Bytebeat and discovered in 2011 by the encomiable Viznut but brought to the future with a lot of new features.

It runs it in various selectable Bitdepths, not just the classic 8 bits. The higher the Bitdepth, the softer, rounder and higher definition the sound becomes it.

Fluorine also features 2 new ways to calculate the the classic mono Bytebeat synthesis in native stereo that sounds rich, wide and tridimensional.

The sound engine currently has 2 modes. LIQUID and SOLID. It affetcs the character of the output.

Another bit that it adds to the classic bytebeat synthesis is the addition of modular and stackable algorithms that process the mathematics under the hood and a recursive Mode that cycles between this algorithms and that turns it all into a new whole synthesis technique, now called "Recursive HD Bytebeats", that altogeher with the stereo modes and Bitdepth features turns this machine, the Fluorine, in probably most advanced way to explore Bytebeat synthesis as in november of 2023.

Fluorine comes in 3 flavors:

-As a fully assembled unit

-As a full kit that the user has to build

-As a PCB + Programmed microcontroller for advanced builders. The user has to source the rest of the components and build the synth.

There´s a user guide that explains every function, knob and button that you can download here.

Buchla Easel Command 208C - In the Loop

video upload by TheTrackdriver

"Playing with the looper on the Strymon Volante delay pedal. I'm using the Akai LPD8 as a keyboard which is connected to the Buchla Easel Command 208C. The Easel and the Gakken Toy Record Maker go into a Behringer Xenyx 1002FX mixer which main output goes through the Volante. The audio chain ends with the Strymon Nightsky pedal. I had recorded a sustained chord from a Waldorf Blofeld onto the vinyl before this session."

Buchla Touché (1980) – Hybrid Analog Keyboard Instrument

The following was sent in by Anastasia Chernysheva, a Ph.D. student at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

"In 1979, Donald Buchla invited experimental composer and his friend, David Rosenboom to collaborate on the design of a new, keyboard instrument with digital sound generation and hybrid, computer-controlled, analog outputs. The result was the Touché, released in the spring of 1980.

Among particular traits of the instrument are:
• flexibility in use – highly programmable, (64 programmable function parameters available), Touché offers a library of “instrument” structures that could be stored as “presets”;
• responsiveness – a user of Touché would enjoy a broad ability to program multiple stimuli and response structures in performance;
• non-linear waveshaping – Touché permits to produce an enormous range of sound with efficient means of control, i.e. using a small number of knobs

The guiding idea of the instrument design was to optimize it for live performance. The hybrid, digital-analog nature of Touché assumes the following.
• On the digital side: a sound-generating engine produced a wide range of timbre of sound possibilities with non-linear wave shaping techniques.
• On the analog side: a programmable analog circuit called Multiple Arbitrary Function Generator (MARF) enabled extensive control of all sound synthesis parameters.

Rosenboom’s recordings Future Travel (1981) and Daytime Viewing (1983) offer extensive exposure to some particular sound worlds created with the Touché. Other than being used for these recordings and in the recent release by Richard Smith a.k.a. Shusta Cults, (the current owner of Rosenboom’s Touché), the instrument barely may be heard in any other recording. Only 4 instruments exist today but just one of them is in the functional condition.

To learn more about the history and design of the instrument check out the lecture about Buchla Touché given at University of Illinois (2022). Technical parameters of the instrument may be found in the brochure for the instrument. Download the PDF here."

Giorgio Sancristoforo's No-Fi Virtual Cassette Tape Loop Studio for Mac Released - Windows Coming

Presentation and Tutorial video upload by Giorgio Sancristoforo

"No-Fi is a cassette tape loop studio sim made to revolutionize your creativity with warm lo-fi sound and striking simplicity!

No-Fi is not a plugin and no other software is needed, it’s standalone:
Plug your instruments, record and mix, just like the real hardware.
You have one mixer, five cassette/loop recorders, one handy reverb and one delay. That’s it!
No-Fi carefully simulates the peculiar nostalgic vintage sound of cassette loops with all the warmth of tape saturation, noises and playback irregularities that characterize the sound of true lo-fi loops.
Choose between Ferric, Chrome and Ferrochrome tapes, add background hiss, tape age and saturation, then control azimuth errors, wow, flutter, tape catch and speed to recreate an authentic lo-fi experience.

No-Fi is not a plugin and no other software is needed, it’s standalone:
Simplicity here is paramount.
Plug-in, record and mix, just like the real hardware.
You have one mixer, five cassette recorders, one handy reverb and one delay. That’s it!

The input channels can be used with synthesizers, guitars, bass, microphones, electroacoustic instruments etc. and can load a VST/AU plugin such as a guitar amp. Alternatively you can load a virtual VST instrument and play it with your midi keyboard! The cassette tape loops can record up to 1 hour of sound each, or if you want you can import your own loops from your computer.

Tape your loops and hear the magic!
And it’s not just five tape recorders, it works as a loop station! Plug in a midi switch controller and use it as a digital looper, with an analog heart."

Mehr Music Machines - Poodleface

video upload by NOISEBUG

"The Poodleface is an awesome gritty analog 3-in-one filter, distortion, sample and hold module from Mehr Music machines.

https://www.noisebug.net/collections/...

The overdrive is a fully analog discrete system Berdo’s circuit that can print interesting results on even the softest of signals. Alternatively this 2-in/2-out section can be used as a dirty feedback tool resulting in chaotic sub octaves, a 2-ch mixer; or send DC into one of the inputs for biasing, resulting in VCA-like functionality.

The filter is a classic OTA style resonant VCF with a hi-pass and low-pass toggle. With very little resonance this filter will sing on its own. With full resonance and no signal patched in, the self oscillating filter is capable of clocking the neighboring sample and hold section for expanded range of audio rate triggering.

The sample and hold section is straight forward. Designed to add motion to the filter section or used individually as a sample rate reduction effect.

There are many great features here, self-patching encouraged. Definitely recommend for those looking to add a bit of non-linear sonic excitement to their patching."

Make Noise Retires the Shared System

Tony Talks Shared System | Make Noise video upload by MAKEN0ISE

"As we begin to ship the final production run of the Black & Gold Shared System Plus, Tony sits down to reminisce on its origins and history, and also to answer your Shared System questions from our various social media channels!

Update:

Press release follows, including a pic of the original Shared System followed by the black and gold.

"After more than a decade of production, the Shared System is being retired, with its final run currently shipping to dealers worldwide.

The Shared System was originally designed in 2012 as a self-contained instrument which was mailed to artists to create music for the Shared System series of 7” records on Make Noise Records. The Shared System was then officially released after the records later in 2012, updated in 2015 as the Black & Gold Shared System and again in 2017 as the Black & Gold Shared System Plus.

The Shared System is the deepest and most complex of our systems, bringing together many of our synthesis techniques into one system. From analog FM to voltage controlled granularization, the Shared System goes to more sound destinations than most folks have time to travel to in a single lifetime. While this marks the end for the Shared System’s production, the instrument will provide an endless source of inspiration for years to come. As always, we cannot wait to hear what you create with yours!

To commemorate the Shared System’s retirement, we have posted a new video to our YouTube channel ('Tony Talks Shared System'), in which Make Noise founder Tony Rolando sits down to reminisce on the origins and history of the Shared System.

While the original Shared System records are long out of print, three of the five Shared System Series artists currently host their Make Noise Records releases digitally on their Bandcamp pages and can be heard via the links below:

Part 1 previously posted here.

"More fun with the Openlabs NEkO. Many people seem to like to complain saying "its old", "Antiquated" or "Its ancient running windows XP" etc... Well yes, for what it was designed to be, its old, BUT its still fun and an interesting piece of synth history along with its little brother the MIkO. Just because its old and runs an old GUI/OS doesn't mean its useless, you don't toss your Memorymoog just because its using a Z80 processor and firmware that's 40 years old. Here is the NEkO running with the old Mtv Music Generator from 1999! This combo is still pretty fun to mess with."

United Plugins introduces Instant Audio’s QuickMuse Multi-Effect Plug-in

video upload by United Plugins

Press release follows:

"United Plugins introduces Instant Audio’s QuickMuse as ultimate plug-in to ignite creativity powered by magic of randomness

'QuickMuse is my to-go inspiration muse as one of the easiest and best multi-effect plug-ins in my arsenal; two to three clicks and you have a vital, spacey sound with multi-faceted textures.'

- Future Bass- and Future Pop-specialising songwriter, composer, and producer Flashback One, 2023

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC: independent development teams federation United Plugins is proud to announce availability of Instant Audio’s QuickMuse as another cross-brand collaboration between founding partner SounDevice Digital (forever fine-tuning tools based on longterm experience of mixing many recordings in its namesake SounDevice Studio) and FireSonic (famed for its always-searching-for-a- shortcut attitude) — duly delivering a multitude of instant yet unique results, injecting fresh and unpredictable elements into compositions, productions, and sound design as the ultimate plug-in for igniting creativity powered by the magic of randomness — representing the latest in a series of tools to instantly assist anyone in achieving their desired sound, as of November 1...

FIRE, EARTH, AIR, WATER, and AETHER
It is unfair to simply call QuickMuse an audio plug-in since there are five unique effects — FIRE, EARTH, AIR, WATER, and AETHER— at its creative core. Combining to unlock a world of sonic possibilities, all are inspired by their elemental namesakes. Needless to say, QuickMuse is simple to use as a smart randomising multi-effect; quickly clicking on the centralised ‘random button’ instantly generates inspirational settings using all five elements, as well as rearranging the ORDER in which they are processed in the effect chain. Thankfully, the random algorithm at its heart is ‘smart’, so it intelligently selects combinations of settings that work well together to give good results — read: no nasty or weird results. Repeatability is far from likely, however, given the sheer volume of hidden parameters it controls. (Ultimately, users can choose to manually control that ORDER by simply dragging and dropping those elements’ symbols accordingly, as well as bypassing their corresponding effect by double-clicking on any element, so random single effects are also achievable.)
