KORG Advances Development of Acoustic Synthesis_phase8

You can find demos of KORG's Acoustic Synthesis_phase8 from last year's SUPERBOOTH in previous posts here.

via KORG:

"Acoustic Synthesis_phase8 is KORG Berlin’s latest development prototype that showcases the new Acoustic Synthesis technology.

What is Acoustic Synthesis_phase8

- It’s an acoustic instrument that is part melodic synthesizer, part drum machine
- 8 independent electromechanical voices
- Sequencer with polyrhythmic shifting
- Waveshaping, Tremolo and EG control
- Replaceable and tunable resonators
- Mechanical sound shaping possibilities

What is Acoustic Synthesis?

Acoustic Synthesis unites the sonic richness of real physically vibrating bodies with electronic control.

Why is it special?

Think the strings of a guitar, keys of a xylophone or the air in a flute; embedded into electronic synthesis. Our efforts merge the physical world with electronics to make instruments that act and feel alive.

KORG Introduces KORG Collection 5

"Scheduled for release in early summer 2024.

Magical synth sounds, authentically re-created by KORG. The Synthesizer Collection for the ages.

• Three new instruments added: EP-1, VOX Super Continental and ARP 2600.
• At Superbooth 2024, we're previewing the KC ARP 2600: true to the original sound and character, with thoughtful modifications and additions.

We spent months understanding every detail of the original and modern schematics, studying manuals, testing with oscilloscopes, and most importantly listening. This is the only ARP 2600 plug-in that can faithfully recreate all 100 sounds in the original 2600 Patch Book. Extensive anti-aliasing techniques deliver truly premium audio quality. KC ARP 2600 adds both classic modifications and entirely new modules, while preserving the distinctive character and design philosophy of the original instrument.

The MetaModule from 4ms Company

You might remember the MetaModule from this previous post.

Press release follows:

The MetaModule puts real knobs and jacks on virtual software modules. It lets you step back from the computer and make music with hardware, while keeping all the benefits and flexibility of software plugins.

Ships with 165 Modules
The MetaModule is a eurorack module with over 160 built-in modules from 4ms Company, Befaco, HetrickCV, Nonlinearcircuits, and Eightfold, plus clones of popular classics such as the Mutable Instruments modules, fun physical modeling algorithms, and lots of handy utilities.
All of the included modules are also available on the computer using the free program VCV Rack. Whether you make patches on VCV Rack and transfer them to the MetaModule, or if you just create patches directly on the MetaModule, there are plenty of creative modules to inspire new ways to make music.

MetaModule Plugins
If the built-in module aren’t enough, you can load more modules as plugins. Already there are over 200 modules in third-party plugins from Bogaudio, Valley, ChowDSP, NANO Modular, and the list is growing.
We have an SDK available to make it easy for VCV Rack plugin developers to convert their plugin to a MetaModule plugin. Our licensing terms are non-restrictive: developers are welcome to distribute their plugin in any way they wish, commercially or not.

Mapping Knobs and Jacks
The MetaModule has 12 knobs that can be mapped to virtual knobs. Each knob can be mapped to up eight virtual knobs, and each mapping can have a different range and offset. You also can save a group of mappings as a Knob Set and switch between Knob Sets with the encoder. You also can map the 8 inputs and 8 outputs to virtual module jacks.
Also, the MetaModule is a USB MIDI host, so you also can map MIDI CC, note, gate, and other parameters to knobs and jacks.

Expanders
There are lots of ways to customize your MetaModule. A Wifi expander allows you to wirelessly transfer patches from your computer. Add eight more knobs with the Knob expander, or buttons with the Button expander. A CV/Audio expander adds more high-resolution inputs and outputs, and the Gate In/Out expander adds not only gate jacks but also TRS MIDI and I2C.

Under the Hood
There are six CV/Audio inputs, two gate inputs, and six CV/Audio outputs. The CV/Audio jacks are all 24-bit, 48kHz DC-coupled, -10V to +10V. A USB-C jack accepts MIDI devices and thumb drives. Patches and plugins can be loaded via a USB drive or SD Card, and internal flash memory lets you save patches you always want to come back to.

The processor is more advanced than anything 4ms has used yet, and is among the most powerful processors found in Eurorack. It uses a dual-core Cortex-A7 running at 800Mhz, with a Cortex-M4 co-processor. There is 512MB of fast DDR3 RAM. It runs bare-metal without an OS, so startup time and latency are blazingly fast.

Retail availability: August 27, 2024
Price: $649 (USD)

Elektron Digitakt II + Syntakt + Octatrack + Analog Heat+FX + Modular Synth Techno Jam

video upload by Group Technologies Australasia

"With the new Digitakt II, Octatrack, Syntakt, Analogue Heat+FX and a small modular synth rack for extra spice, we've assembled a powerful Elektron performance rig. This configuration demonstrates the Digitakt II and Octatrack's sampling capabilities and how well they work together. With 12 tracks of digital and analogue machinery, the Syntakt is just as capable of producing rocking beats and synth work. Not to be overlooked is the Analogue Heat + FX, the sonic processing palette that glues everything together. This is a live, improvisational jam that was captured in one take without any additional post-production or processing.

Set-up details:
Octatrack: master clock, mixer, resampling and providing some performance effects for the Syntakt and modular synth.
Digitak II: main drums and rhythmic loops.
Syntakt: additional percussion and minimal synth sounds.
Modular Synth: percussive bleeps and atonal sounds from voices LIP and SY0.5.
Analog Heat +FX: end of chain audio processing. Also some filtering and reverb effects.

Audio Routing:
Modular synth into external input on Syntakt
Digitakt II and Syntakt running into the Octatrack.
Octatrack output (stereo) into Analog Heat +FX.

MIDI Routing and Sequencing:
Octatrack is the master clock, sending MIDI clock to all other boxes. Internal sequencers on each box are in use, no external sequencing."

BAGÀI
Multipurpose Thingamabob

bagài / baˈgaːi / s.m. [modenese dialect, from a late Latin bagagium ‘baggage’, formed after the late Latin baga, deriving presumably from the Anglo-Saxon bag (see ancient French bague, Provençal bàgua, ‘bundle’), whose root may be traced down to the Indo-European *pac, ‘to tie,’ from which also ‘package,’ ‘pact’] – ‘thing,’ ‘thingamabob.’ A term used when the actual name of a thing or a person does not come to mind.

A module that is at the same time a clock burst, S&H, audio bitcrush, or fluctuating random voltage generator is indeed a bit elusive to describe in a single word. Even if one tries, some aspects will always be missing.

Why bother, then? Let us just call it “that thingamabob,” or better, “that bagài.”

The 411 is a quadruple linear VCA, mixer, and multiple for audio and CV.

It consists of four linear VCAs with semi-normalled inputs and CV inputs, −6 dB attenuation switches, a mixed output, and an unpatched output.

The 411’s architecture allows to use it in many ways, for example:
processing four signals independently;
modulating one signal with four CVS and sending it to four different destinations;
mixing up to four signals and modulating them with the same CV;
mixing two audio signals and modulating them with a modulated CV…

"Patches will be available at https://www.orano.co.uk/shop or http://www.synthsounds.co.uk

This is a very common question I am asked by owners. and curious potential buyers of the moog one, "Can it do realistic piano sounds?"

Obviously the best thing for these type of sounds is either the real thing or romplers.

but me being me, I thought I'd try and see how close I could get it. And not surprisingly, the Moog One gets quite close bearing in mind it is fully analog.

the musical piece, I composed while programming this patch, I have aptly named it 'ONE'

PowerStrings for MSoundFactory - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the DAW

video upload by meldaproduction

Press release follows:

MeldaProduction pushes PowerStrings as MSoundFactory instrument tailored towards quickly crafting symphonic strings for modern pop or cinematic productions

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC: following in the must-have footsteps of its DreamMachines (so-called VIRTUAL ANALOG DRUM DESIGNER) and Meldway Grand (software grand piano) as premium instruments for MSoundFactory, itself held in high regard as arguably the most powerful modular virtual instrument platform out there today by effectively allowing users to create their own instruments (alternatively available as MSoundFactory LE — providing access to all the sounds and instruments included with its bigger brother, but without access to the editing screen — and also for free as the self-explanatory MSoundFactory Player with only a few sounds included, although users can choose to purchase premium instruments), music production and audio processing advanced tools-maker MeldaProduction is proud to announce availability of PowerStrings — pushed as its next MSoundFactory premium instrument, this time tailored towards quickly crafting symphonic strings suited to the fast-paced production world of modern pop or cinematic music — as of May 13...

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the DAW
As an orchestral powerhouse, PowerStrings represents MeldaProduction’s latest MSoundFactory premium instrument, this time tailored towards quickly crafting symphonic strings suited to the fast-paced production world of modern pop or cinematic music. The timeless elegance of symphonic strings are creatively combined with a contemporary twist — to deliver rich and vibrant string sounds designed to instantly elevate tracks. Indeed, its streamlined interface and intuitive controls allow users to effortlessly add lush string arrangements to their compositions without slowing down their creative flow.

An assortment of ARTICULATIONS
PowerStrings proffers an assortment of ARTICULATIONS, ranging from smooth SOFT LEGATO to crisp SPICCATO settings, so users can achieve the perfect expression for any musical idea. It is possible to speedily switch between them during a live performance using a controller keyboard’s lower keys, or even enable multiple articulations at the same time. The premium instrument in question also allows for independent pitch and volume per articulation, which is ideal for extremely easy layering, while all ARTICULATIONS have access to detailed — Attack, Hold, Decay, Sustain, and Release — envelope settings.

Get CREATIVE
Strings should not necessarily always sound like strings — certainly in the context of modern pop or cinematic music production. PowerStrings’ CREATIVE ‘tab’ takes its users into a brave new world of sound, one where they can, for example, make the strings sound like a synth using the CONVOLUTION settings. Similarly, FM (Frequency Modulation) controls are also available, as is control over HARMONICS. Applying a pleasant-sounding DIFFUSION to the proceedings is, likewise, all part of getting creative.

Additional Tone Tweakers Listings

"Like nearly all the high end vintage analog synths we sell, this item has been METICULOUSLY disassembled, cleaned inside and out, FULLY serviced by professionals who’ve been servicing and selling vintage synths for more than the last 3 decades, and systematically tested multiple times over a long period to ensure it’s working exactly as it should. No BS. No ebay surprises. We’re perfectionists and don’t cut corners. Although this instrument came to us in relatively good shape, we want our items to be better than the rest and invested *many* hours of tech time plus parts costs to fully overhaul this unit so it would be clean, working like new again and as reliable as possible for its next owner. This was a serious investment of time, love, and money, and was definitely worth the effort and is of course reflected in the higher than usual price. If you’re looking for a great sounding example of this model that works just like it should without needing to invest hundreds or thousands of dollars in tech fees and waiting from weeks to years, this one should make you very happy.

Our tech did the following work to this unit to make it better than the rest / promote longevity:

Power supply capacitors replaced.
Battery replaced.
Patches reloaded.
Cleaned all switch contacts.
Cleaned unit inside and out.
Installed new encoders to prevent the usual glitchiness one often experiences with original 40 year old encoders (changed ceramic caps in circuit for compatibility).
Cleaned key contacts and PCB.
Cleaned sensor.
Replaced pitch and mod lever potentiometers with new ones since the originals are often problematic these days.
Multiple systematic burn in tests to ensure stability.

OS ROM 1.1, voice 1.6.

Selling fees here are over $1000, and professional servicing by perfectionists and future-proofing is costly."

"This is the ARP AVATAR. It is basically a Arp Odessy without a keyboard controller. It was intended to be used with the guitar MIDI controller pickup that I no longer have. my tech tells me that the Roland midi guitars or a Roland-style or any hex pickup will work. I used this with a Kenton box (midi to cv converter) which turned it into a tabletop synth module. I just had all the sliders replaced and it's pretty satisfying to play with.

It is from 1977 so it's not brand new. I just sent it to my tech to make sure it's all working and we decided to change all the sliders out. When I bought this 15 years ago it came in a road case that was deteriorated and left marks on the wood panels on the sides as seen in the pics. I did clean them up a little. If you are someone who is handy I am sure you could clean these up to look like new if you are inspired to do so."

"The first modular synth reborn and extremely accurately recreated. The last great creation of the Asheville, NC Moog Employee Owned company before it was bought out and it's fitting that it was also one of the first. This is the only fully discrete modular moog ever made. Im the original owner and it comes with just like it would brand new with its original box, accessories, patch cables and big bonus, matching Moog 953 Duophonic Keyboard which feels great and integrates with this synth seamlessly connecting just a single cable to the back. Fattest synth moog ever made with only a better power supply, works internationally, and more stable than the original. Save over 3k on this one. The only flaw that I can see is some hairline scratches on the back of the keyboard and a couple tiny Knicks on it as well. The model 10 looks untouched."

"This is a 4-piece Roland SYSTEM-100 set.
This is a rare item that is not often seen.

"The Roland SYSTEM-100 is a total system synthesizer released in 1975. By combining the Model 101 synth/keyboard (the basic unit) with an expander (sound module Model 102), audio mixer (Model 103), analog sequencer (Model 104), and monitor speakers (Model 109), it became the current The SYSTEM-100 is a total system like today's all-in-one workstations.
The SYSTEM-100 dramatically expands your sound design options with powerful oscillators and filters, plus modular patch capabilities.

Combining the features of the original Models 101 synth and Model 102 expander modules in the SYSTEM-100, the modular routing capabilities allow for unparalleled versatility and incredibly fat sounds to be generated. When paired with the Model 102 expander, two VCOs and two LFOs were available, and sample-and-hold, ring modulation, and noise generators all worked seamlessly in concert. Its sound quality is fat and shimmering, a great sound that sets it apart from lower-priced models.

SEQUENCER104 Sequencer Model 104 is a parallel 12-step, series 24-step analog sequencer. Up to 24 steps and 12x2 parallel connections are possible, and it can be used with CV-compatible analog synths other than the SYSTEM-100.

MIXER103 Mixer Model 103 is a 4CH powered mixer. Equipped with a spring reverb, it is a perfect match for analog synths.

Disassembled and cleaned, slider contacts cleaned, switch contacts cleaned, POT contacts cleaned, etc., and other overall maintenance completed.

get it here:
www.synthesizerstudioberlin.com/store/p/supernova-fx

SUPERNOVA is a morphing FX processor for evolving soundscapes with a reverb at its heart.

We took the Reverb Diffusion Network from our well received SYSTEM FLOW Drone Synth and brought it to the next level with a modulated feedback drive + Notch filter. We also added a grain cloud, 6 LFOs and two Bit crushers. And a lot of presets

You can use it as a simple Grain Cloud/Reverb/Pitch Shifter/Bit-Crusher or make huge transitions by morphing between two presets.

The combination of all these FX modules and the possibility to randomize/morph all parameters gives you endless combinations for lush to freaky sounds.

Use the “BIG” MORPH knob to make HUGE transitions.
Feedback Drive is gain compensated so you don’t blow your speakers but you can still go berserk on your sound.

For lots of modulation and evolving sounds:

Draw your own waveforms for 6 different LFOs and use them to:.
1. Automate your Sample Rate / Mix of the Bit-crushers
2. Automate Feedback Distortion
3. Automate the Notch Filter in the Feedback path.

"A walkthrough of the LEGEND HZ from Synapse Audio. It sounds great and has some lovely presets that demo some lovely Hans Zimmer cinematic effects.. check them out at @10:43 which led me to realise the unique aspect of this is the amount of access the modulation matrix give you to all the parameters.

If this was sold as a virtual modular system there would be patch points and cables all over the place.. and an awful lot of confusion! But it somehow gets the flexibility without the complexity. Having even the effects and filter bank parameters as modulation destinations really opens things up.

You can go from super simple to suyper complex in minutes. The MSEG envelopes/LFOs are so easy to use but really drive you into sound design and experimentation."

Spectral Processors - 296t vs Sputnik vs Fumana vs Bark Filter

video upload by Stazma

"This is a BIG one. I will try to compare the four main big Buchla inspired "Spectral Processor" modules:
The Buchla & Tiptop 296t, the Sputnik Spectral Processor, the Verbos Electronics Bark Filter and the Frap Tools Fumana.
You will see they all sound and behave quite diferently and this is why I guess this video might of some interest.

Have fun!"

Loom: Upgraded Action Zone

video upload by Aodyo Instruments

"This video showcases the upgraded Action Zone, now with X axis control in addition to the existing Z pressure axis. This upgrade offers yet another dimension of expressiveness and playability for your Loom.

This is the result of a process that started way before the Kickstarter launch, during the early development stages. Initially, we aimed to include a two-dimensional action zone, but we faced design challenges that led us to postpone this feature.
With tests and feedback with the Kickstarter prototypes, we could quickly hone in on a seamless solution that integrates effortlessly.
To accommodate this new feature, we've slightly widened the Action Zone. This adjustment not only optimizes the use of the new X axis control, but also facilitates two-finger playing techniques. Consequently, we've updated the visual design on the left side of the Loom, moving away from the large Aodyo logo. We look forward to unveiling these new visuals in June."

DRONES MAX

video upload by HOME BAKE INSTRUMENTS

DRONES MAX is a WAVE TABLE SYNTHERSIZER for sustained sounds. It has three WAVE TABLE OSCs and two POLE FILTERs, which can be modulated by two LFOs. Powerful effects include stereo delay, reverb, and crusher with a wide range of parameters, allowing for a variety of expression from aggressive and intense sounds to beautiful cosmic harmonics.

WAVETABLE

Over 200 waveforms are recorded, and you can change them smoothly. Also, at the end of the knob is a sawtooth waveform, a sine waveform, and a frequency-varying noise generator. WAVETABLE has a mixture of waveforms that contain different harmonics, and when combined with an LFO, it can create the effect of gradually changing musical scales.

OSC MIX

You can set the volume ratio of the three oscillators.

NOSIE

Adds noise to the oscillator output.

FILTER

DRONES is equipped with a 2POLE low-pass filter with resonance. Turning the CUTOFF knob to the left attenuates the high notes, and when turned all the way, no sound is produced. Turning the RES knob to the right will cause a peak to occur at the pitch at the cutoff point.

LFO

DRONES has a built-in LFO that can output sine, sawtooth, square, and sampled and held random waveforms. The LFO knob sets the LFO frequency and waveform. Turning the knob to the right will speed up the frequency, and when it reaches the highest frequency, it will switch to the next waveform.

STEREO DELAY / REVERB

Equipped with stereo delay and reverb for drone sounds.

Feedback can be set to no attenuation, adding even more depth to the sound.

CRUSHER

By lowering the resolution of the sound, you can create harsher expressions.

Soma Labs Flux - Highly Expressive New Instrument - Sonic LAB Presentation

video upload by sonicstate

"Soma Laboratory's unconventional design is a major factor in why their instruments are so unique. We take a look at the latest instrument Flux - which takes a lot of inspiration from the no touch approach of the original Theremin. However with the use of small magnets in each had there are five control axis per hand and up to 16 controllable parameters.
The instrument is loosely based on the Terra synthesis concept and features 37 digital algorithms which are treated like individual instruments with their own timbral characteristics.

The right hand controls the pitch, dynamic, octave and tilt (for timbral control) and the left hand controls more of the timbral character with a considerable amount of tonal range possible.

We talked with Vlad Kreimer who gave us an over view of how Flux works.
The first batch of production units will be going out later this year and the price they are aiming for is in the region of 1000 Euros + tax

Introducing: SetonixSynth Shaka-8 and Shaka-4 VC Stereo Matrix Mixer for Eurorack

video upload by SetonixSynth

"We are proud to announce the new Shaka-8 and Shaka-4! This demo contains a feature rundown and brief performance demo of these powerful modules.

The Shaka-8 is a Voltage-Controlled Stereo Matrix Mixer with an all-analog signal path. While it is similar in function to other Stereo Matrix Mixers, the Shaka-8 uses high quality audio VCAs to enable voltage control over each matrix patch point, i.e. the send level of each L/R pair of inputs to each L/R pair of outputs.

In addition to the 4 input and 2 output channels on the Shaka-8, the Matrix may be expanded to a 4x3, 4x4 or more matrix mixer by chaining Shaka-4 Stereo Matrix Expanders to the main unit via a 12-pin connector on the back of the Shaka-8. The Shaka-4 cannot be used without a main Shaka-4 unit.

The Shaka-8 and Shaka-4 operate in much the same way as a typical stereo audio matrix mixer, with the send level of each input to each output controlled by the corresponding knob, and the resulting “mix” being a sum of the knob settings in each column, added to the CV input corresponding to each knob.

For Eurorack users hungry for interesting new ways to route stereo or mono filters, oscillators, and effects, the Shaka-8 and Shaka-4 are sure to provide an affordable, flexible, and highly useful patching ecosystem to explore.

Available summer 2024 from SetonixSynth!"

Xaoc Devices Berlin: the oscillator that opens up the Leibniz Binary Subsystem

video upload by Tom Churchill

"On the surface, Xaoc Devices Berlin is a simple compact VCO offering square and saw waves with hard sync, FM input and octave switching. The most interesting part lies behind the panel and that is the Leibniz Binary Subsystem interface, namely LBZ out and LBZ in. The frontpanel LBZ LINK button and its corresponding gate input switch between the default saw wave and a signal that has been passed through any Leibniz module (or a combination of Leibniz modules) connected to Berlin. Add Xaoc Devices Jena for wave processing and the output is no longer a simple saw wave – you now have a vintage-style wavetable oscillator with a penchant for the experimental due to its open, hackable nature. Berlin operates in a way similar to the classic PPG Wave and Fairlight CMI synths and employs a variable sample rate of an extremely widerange internal clock. As the sample rate changes with the oscillator frequency, Berlin's internal square and saw waves exhibit no aliasing effect. The whole frequency range spans from 30 seconds in LFO mode up to 250 kHz (!) with the clock reaching an astounding 20 MHz. Add to that voltage control over all parameters and the result is a highly versatile module capable of creating a significantly diverse palette of unusual waveforms.

Xaoc Devices Berlin notable features:

– wide-range VCO with LFO mode (over 20 octaves of tracking);
– Leibniz Binary Subsystem interface;
– extremely widerange clock source;
– manual and voltage control over all parameters (including octave switching and LBZ LINK!);
– simultaneous Square and Saw/Leibniz wave outputs;
– extensive waveshaping potential when combined with Xaoc Devices Leibniz Subsystem modules, e.g., Jena or Rostock"
