TR-909 Firmware Version 5 Demos
See this post for details.
Playlist:
1. TR-909 FIRMWARE VERSION 5 UPGRADE!!!
// The most wonderful thing that could have ever happened for Roland TR-909 owners and lovers has actually happened.2. TR-909 FIRMWARE V.5 - Demonstration 1 - MIDI SYNC CORRECTION
// I’ve installed one of the first Revolution 909 firmware upgrades from Addictive Instruments into my own personal Roland TR-909 and I released a little enthusiastic clip about how delighted I am to have 33 year old serious problems resolved. This is the first of a few posts planned for today to show you why it’s so amazing to me.3. TR-909 FIRMWARE VERSION 5 - Demonstration 2 - SWITCH BETWEEN PLAY AND WRITE MODE IN REAL TIME
// This is something that I’ve been thinking about since 1991 when I first got my own TR-909: The ability to switch between pattern play and pattern write without having to stop the sequencer.4. TR-909 FIRMWARE VERSION 5- Demonstration 3 - MUTES
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The TR-909 in pattern write mode allows us to do some clever things. We can change the length of the pattern using last step, and we can add and subtract notes and accents (internal and external) to develop our pattern. However, we can only do this in write mode.
So in order to do these things in performance we have to A ) stop, change modes, and start again B ) stay in write mode always (can’t change patterns in write mode) C ) program our drums from another device entirely D ) add all the chaos, and then use the level knobs to bring sounds in and out (the way maestro Jeff Mills makes magic!) or E ) make a ton of patterns ahead of time and switch between them as our performance.
We can do mutes on a mixer, use a midi controller. There are options, but when I’m playing live it’s just me. I have stuff happening. It’s a lot to navigate and keep track of. Changing mixer settings, dealing with midi controllers, or even flipping through preset patterns can be distracting and a bummer. Adding the ability to just get into write mode and change the length for a fill, or a sidetrack, or a totally new in the moment idea is fantastic!
// This is something which I didn’t anticipate being so amazing. I use mutes on the mixer as a fundamental part of how I perform live, but I don’t tend to reach for instrument mute functions on the actual devices. This is not a personal bias, but rather a point of clarity. I’m doing like 25 things at once in any given performance (and singing) so it’s pretty easy to forget what I’ve muted or un muted unless it’s in central place (like on the mixer), but after all I just explored in demonstration clip 2 about ways to add and subtract sounds live, mutes are a marvelous and really powerful addition to this list of ways to address patten complexity in a live performance.5. TR-909 FIRMWARE VERSION 5 - Demonstration 4 - INSTANT PATTERN CHANGES
// Ok, this is really simple, but it’s so super extra totally bad ass.6. TR-909 FIRMWARE VERSION 5 - Demonstration 5 - EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT
Fig.1 INSTANT PATTERN CHANGES
The thing about the TR-909 is that it doesn’t instantly change patterns. You have to wait for the end, and then it starts the next selected pattern. To get around this you can do some stuff:
• make some really complicated patterns
• make one big complex pattern and then use the mixer to bring things in and out (fun!)
But this is fantastic! Just hold down shift and start instantly jumping between patterns. Add a crash from a crashy pattern, start a fill, and switch to just a kick drum, mix and match patterns and really get something heavy going - THEN get involved with the mixer, and it’s a gorgeous avalanche of TR-909 awesome!
In my example here I’m just showing you that it’s possible now. The rest is up to you.
Addictive Instruments have released firmware version 5 for the Roland TR-909 and the RE-909. It’s a real upgrade which requires soldering and while it isn’t easily reversible, the upgrade also includes firmware v1 and v4 so you can revert by choosing another firmware and booting it that way (no one would ever know).
Find out more at revolution909.fr
This first batch is limited to 100 so if you’re as happy about this as I am, hurry up!
That said, I believe in these guys and totally hope that this all goes well, and this will continue to be available (and more!) until all the TR/RE-909’s have one inside.
This was demo 4, one more and I’ll leave the rest to you.
// I’ve been using the EXT INST function of the Roland TR-909 since the day I got it. I love triggering samples, basslines, and other drum machines from the stately TR-909’s main panel. The hassle has always been that the notes it generates can’t be changed. So you get an octave or so of fixed notes and that’s all. I’ve spent a lot of time messing with samplers and getting the sounds I want to trigger from the notes I have to offer, and while it’s fun, and useful, it can be a drag. Fact is, a lot of people never even explored it.
Fig.1 CENTRAL CONTROL WITH TR-727
The TR-727 doesn’t allow us to control its midi notes either, but the Addictive Instruments firmware v.5 update has presets and it has a user mode (fig.2). So we can play any note we want on any channel we want at any velocity we want now.
My 727 is upgraded with Harry Axten‘s perfect sound rom upgrade, and this is my own custom rom, and here it is being beautifully programmed by my beloved TR-909!
Fig.3 BASSLINE
This is an example of using the user template to create a chromatic keyboard and programming a bassline which is saved with my drums, and subject to all the new and original functions of the 909.
So much fun!
Clearly I was already in love with my TR-909, but I’ve fallen all over again here.
The external instrument mode is expanded, and it much more powerful now, it’s also nicely documented (at last) in the manual. It is more complicated than plug it in and go if you want to make the most of it, and it’s worth it. This is something wonderful.

Melbourne Instruments DELIA // It's got motorised faders!
video upload by Starsky Carr
"From Superbooth 2024 DELIA is Melburne Instruments latest synth. The Nina was a desktop fuly analog synth, this one is a hybrid with keys.
Just a quick demo from Superbooth, but if I can get my hands on one :).
FYI I spoke with Signal Sounds - the distributor - while I was there so hopefully we can sort something soon."

Motorized Morphing Polyphonic Synthesizer
49 Key Velocity and Aftertouch Sensitive
DELIA is a bi-timbral polysynth inspired by the motorized control panel and voice architecture of the original Melbourne Instruments’ Nina. Delia introduces a 49-key velocity and aftertouch sensitive keyboard, new multi-mode analog filters, high pass and low pass resonance control, 3-stage overdrive, and even more modulation possibilities.
Analog soul with a computerized brain
Using a combination of true analog filters and virtual analog modelling, DELIA retains the vital sound of massively overdriveable analog ladder filters, while using a digital front end to run modelled VCOs, wavetables, high pass filters and more. The powerful combination of analog plus digital is harnessed by Delia’s unique 12 note mode, using 12 complete oscillator banks into the 6 filters, limiting note stealing without compromising the sound, and fully unleashing Delia’s bi-timbral operation.
Discrete Multi-mode Filters
DELIA’s true analog low pass filter is the heart and soul of the sound engine — warm, full and sweet or fearfully aggressive. It is complemented with a high-pass modelled ladder filter, which can be linked for bandpass and notch operation. With 12 and 24dB slopes and separate high/low pass resonance control there is huge scope when shaping sounds, from the most delicate plucks and pads to the wildest overdriven bass and lead sounds imaginable. Delia is an inspiring creative companion and dependable instrument for musicians and composers, no matter what their level.
Know your Filters! Analog + Digital
DELIA’s filters have an analog and a digital section per voice. The analog filter is the classic discrete transistor ladder filter offering a choice of 24dB or 12dB per octave operation. Prior to this filter is an analog variable overdrive circuit that can push the filter from normal operation to complete distorted collapse of the transistor ladder, adding richness, aggression and body to your sound.
The HP filter is a digital transistor-level mathematical model of a 24dB ladder filter, based on the gold-standard Ebers-Moll transistor equations. This gives an almost perfect match to the response of the analog circuit, including the overdrive response, resonance and natural filter frequency variations.
The High Pass filter is less important sonically, so the choice of digital instead of analog reduces cost without compromise. Having the Low Pass filter second gives true analog character where it counts.
The filter is Multi-mode with 3 ways to configure. The High Pass and Low Pass cut-off frequencies are separately controlled with 2 knobs, so the overall operation can be High Pass, Low Pass or Bandpass. The separate HP and LP resonance controls offer flexibility to shape the sound including vocal-style formants. Delia’s LINK function locks the distance between the Low Pass and High pass knobs, setting a constant width Bandpass for both manual control and sweeps using the VCF envelope or other Modulation Matrix controls.
Total Recall. It’s not a dream!
The motorized journey does not end at Recall and Morph; Delia’s ‘MOD Mode’ automates the Modulation Matrix setup. As you move between the 20 modulation sources, every knob changes position to display its modulation amount. No need to tweak the panel every time you switch sources or destinations, no matter how many modulations or slots are active. Delia gives you a sound design workflow that truly flows - combining the flexibility of a soft synth with the tactile experience of a classic hardware synth.
Morph every parameter, then Mod it!
DELIA’s A/B Morph function lets you explore and sweep through timbres like no other. The A/B Morph sound is an actively calculated change in parameters between the A and B patches including the entire modulation matrix. This provides the ability to instantly create a new preset based on the Morph position that is neither the A or B patch, but instead a totally new sound. Morph is also a ‘MOD destination’, giving you even more creative control via Aftertouch, Mod Wheel and Expression.
Step into an infinite matrix of sound
The motorized journey does not end at Recall and Morph! Just like Nina, Delia’s ‘MOD Mode’ automates the Modulation Matrix setup.
Building on innovation
DELIA inherits many of the acclaimed features of Nina, including 4-Quadrant Analog VCAs, Morphing, Digital Effects and Digital Wavetable Oscillator. Adding to these features are the inclusion of Sequencer Phrase Looping and Overdubbing, and the ability to assign your favorite effects parameter to the Effects Macro control.
Under the hood Delia is a beast! Virtual Analog Oscillators model Nina’s discrete circuitry but add cross-modulation, and Delia’s 20 modulation sources and 40+ mod destinations with unlimited slots gives sound designers an almost endless spectrum of sounds. Two digital effects processors paired with classic effects presets and the option to run in series or parallel offers creative freedom. And with the ability to save more than 16,000 presets inspiration and artistry will never be limited by available memory or slots
Waveform, Envelope and Wavetable Visualizers
Delia’s high definition LCD also provides useful Waveform and Wavetable visualizers, as well as instant feedback and display for almost every function as you interact with the control panel.

Modor DR-2 tutorial Part 1: Getting started
video upload by Richard DeHove
"The Modor DR-2 is one of what I consider the 'Big Five' in the drum machine world. There's the DR-2, Perkons, Pulsar-23, Rtym MkII and the Alpha Base.
This is not a sound design video, nor do I go through the many sound models and parameter options, that's for later videos. This one is a guide to the DR-2's basic operations, although of course there's plenty of hits along the way. The intention is to explore the many functions of the DR-2 in an ongoing tutorial series.
I've admired this machine for a couple of years and am excited to have got this one on loan from Modor. So it was very cheeky of me to switch out all the knobs for big black grippy ones from Erica Synths, but, well, it just looked too sweet and clean and my Big Box of Knobs is always looking for opportunities.
Soundwise there is a limiter on the output just to avoid any surprises and my voice is damping the drum machine level whenever I speak, which should explain any volume fluctuations.

Xtensions | Shared System 'X' tutorials episode 05 | New Arrivals
video upload by Cinematic Laboratory
"In my Shared System X series, I am exploring custom layouts for the MakeNoise multiverse. Since most modules offer basic features (modulation, basic waveforms, ringmod) they can also be useful for learning modular techniques. I already made a 'first patch' video for the new Channel Saver and PrssPnt modules, but they can have a different purpose in every new patch, so I wanted to use the 'new arrivals' with various modules like Morphagene and Mimeophon. They are extensions to the collection you already have, and this collection will immediately extend its capabilities with millions of new options. But I'll also revisit the DXG because it has a kind of 'weird' signal path I did not fully understand.

"Sorry for the distracting dialog, which kind of illustrates that I don't like to speak on my videos.
But this time, I had to use a voice to demo frequency shifting on vocals. I couldn't avoid it.
I could have used a professional voice-over artists, but that would make my free videos unsustainable. Regardless, Koszalin is an awesome module that can completely transform any sound you throw at it."

In a conversation with Sonic State, Jason explained that the *Dail Quantizer has been in the works for a while, with initial designs dating back to 2020. Due to the chip shortage, the product had to undergo a complete redesign, but the functionality has been well thought out over the years. The Dail Quantizer serves as a monophonic quantizer, precision adder, and MIDI-to-CV interface, providing a versatile solution for musicians looking to enhance their sound and performance.
The Dail Quantizer features three pages controlled by a toggle switch, allowing users to easily navigate between quantizer, precision adder, and scale programming modes. With the ability to set different scales, from major triads to pentatonic scales, users can customize their sound with ease. Additionally, the Dail Quantizer offers multi-octave spanning quantization, allowing for complex spread voice patterns and modulation of quantized signals.
Dail Quantizer Price: 289 GBP"
The Instruō dàil is a high resolution quantiser, precision adder, MIDI-to-CV interface, and USB MIDI Host with a very small form factor suitable for any system.
As a quantiser, scales can be defined locally as well as externally via MIDI. The USB Host port will accept and power class compliant devices offering convenience and immediacy to melodies and sequences.
As a precision adder, existing signals can be offset by any defined chromatic interval. Transpose anything with accuracy using the calibrated buffered throughput which runs parallel to the quantiser engine. This feature alone makes for a great companion to any sequencer or 1V/octave source within a system.
No longer is a single repeating octave of quantised notes a limitation. dàil features a fully bipolar quantiser engine through which any multi-octave spanning scale/chord/arpeggio can be engaged immediately from your MIDI keyboard. Patterns can also be programmed onboard with precision with the ability to auto fill from a wide range of major and minor starting points.
Small form factor, big feature set!
dàil will suit any scale of system adding flexibility and immediacy to your melodic needs.

"At Superbooth 2024, Chris showcased the Chromaplane*, an electromagnetic synthesizer developed with the support of *KOMA Electronic*. The instrument features 10 electromagnetic fields emitting from specific points on its surface, which are played using two pickup coils. The sound is detected by the coils, passing through a low pass filter and delay, creating a unique modulation effect. Additionally, the *Chroma Plane includes an envelope follower output and an external input for playing external audio sources.
The concept of the Chroma Plane originated from Chris's experience as a musician and visual artist, leading to the development of a smaller version of the instrument for live performances. After more than 100 concerts worldwide, Chris and KOMA are working towards making the Chroma Plane available as a commercial product in the coming months. Stay tuned to the Koma website for updates."
