Tapechild UDS-16 VST / Soviet Drum Machine VST

video upload by Tapechild

"UDS-16 is a 16-voice instrument that synthesizes every hit in real time, without samples. It brings together two Lel UDS-inspired models, a Formanta Rockton-inspired model and our own Tapechild engine. It also includes tape saturation and gated reverb.

The connection to these rare Soviet instruments is a central part of the project: it's a contemporary drum sound design tool inspired by them, rather than an official reissue. It's available for macOS and Windows as VST3, AU and standalone, priced at $49."

https://tapechild.com/uds-16

"Pure Synthesis: 100% synthesized sound generation — no samples used.

4 Engine Models: Features four synthesis algorithms, including vintage Soviet circuits and an original Tapechild model.

Sound Character: Delivers gritty, punchy analog-style percussion, industrial tones, and distinctive vintage electronic drums.

Compatibility & Price: Available for macOS (Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows 10/11 for $49."

ROM EXPANSION – For EPROM Drum Machines by DUCKTRONIC

DUCKTRONIC has made a ROM Expansion currently compatible with Oberheim DX and Linn drum machines. You can find the user manuals for each on a Google drive here.

The following is the intro in the DX manual: "The ROM EXPANSION extends the Oberheim DX with 104 sounds, most of which originate from the early 1980s. This makes it possible to recreate the sound of drum machines from that era. It is also possible to save custom-assembled soundsets and load them again at a later time.

Installation requires the CONTROL BOARD with the "Sound Control" software, the CONTROL PANEL, and six EPROM BOARDS with EPROMs. If only individual instruments are to be modified, fewer EPROM BOARDS are required accordingly.

Installing the ROM EXPANSION does not require any mechanical modifications or irreversible changes. The original state of the Oberheim DX can therefore be restored at any time."

You can find a YouTube playlist with demos here.

Behold DigiTaur - a DIY digital bass synthesizer

video upload by Mute State

"A teensy based digital bass synth heavily inspired by Moog Minitaur, with a few twists of my own."

Note Mute Synth brought us the Semiotic Sequencer – Online Text Based Sequencer just posted below.

Semiotic Sequencer – Online Text Based Sequencer

video upload by Mute State

Note the above video is from January 10, 2025. It reminds me of Textquencer which made its first appearance on the site back in 2022. Sequences from Semiotic Sequencer can be exported as a MIDI file.

"The Semiotic Sequencer: Merging Music and Meaning:
https://www.mutestate.com/itu/seq_og_... [link to online version. BTW, "sequence this" makes for a good sequence - just paste it in multiple times. See this link for additional info]

The Semiotic Sequencer is a tool created by jazz musician, composer, and sound artist Tao Højgaard, known as Mute State. This tool is not just an artistic experiment but a conceptual bridge between music, linguistics, and semiotics. By translating text into musical sequences, the sequencer creates a sensory dialogue between language and sound, sparking curiosity and innovation at their intersection.

Why It Matters
At its core, the sequencer embodies a shared curiosity between science and art—a desire to explore abstract ideas and transform them into tangible, meaningful experiences. Just as science seeks answers and art provokes questions, this sequencer offers a unique way to navigate the uncharted territory between these realms. It reveals the rhythm, melody, and harmony inherent in written language, providing new insights into the musicality of language.

Dust Takes - 64 Presets for Sequential Take 5 - Sound Pack Demo

video upload by Jogging House

"Dust Takes is a collection of 64 handmade ambient presets for the Sequential Take 5 synthesizer: https://jogginghouse.com/products/dus...

As the name implies, the presets lean towards a nostalgic, dreamy, lofi and atmospheric sound, but you can use them in any gerne.

All sounds have a fully mapped mod matrix to generate lots of subtle movement. So when you hold a key down for a while, there usually is something happening over time.

There are expressive controls mapped on each sound. Turning the mod wheel, applying pressure/aftertouch or playing the keys with different velocities will affect the sounds.

Each preset also has two effects dialed in to enhance what makes it special."

New York School of Synthesis Merch Back In Stock

A message from the Dean Friedman email list (don't miss the PS below, and don't miss the link to the videos):

"Hey Folks.

I hope your square waves and LFO's are happily modulating and your filter envelopes are sustaining well.

This is just a note to say, I've opened up two 'print-on-demand' shops (US/Canada & The rest of the WORLD) on the Shopify [US/Canada] and Deco [The rest of the WORLD] print-on-demand platforms, which means you can now order your New York School of Synthesis merch in a variety of sizes and colors, including not only NYSS T-Shirts, but NYSS Baseball Caps, NYSS Coffee Cups and NYSS Pouches too!

Wishing you wily and wonderous waveforms!

Dean of the New York School of Synthesis
[a name - not a title!]

PS: I'm hoping to accumulate a collection of pictures of synthesists wearing a New York School of Synthesis T-Shirt, Baseball Cap or holding a NYSS Coffee Mug. Folks that send a photo will receive a signed 'digital' copy of the screen-grab from my NYSS Intro to Synthesis video (see photo near top of email). Please email your photo to: dean@deanfriedman.com Cheers! Dean"

BTW, if you somehow haven't seen the New York School of Synthesis series yet, do not miss it!

Dirtywave MX (Single Device Demo)

video upload by Dirtywave

"Since the previous video introducing the MX (below), the most asked question has been about if the looper can be used to mix a single device. MX supports up to 24 seconds of stereo looping, so hopefully this answers it.

For this demonstration, we're using only a GBA running @ForsFM FMS."

Phantom Exposure Interphase Cartograph Sound Demo - Casio VZ range emulation expanded

video upload by Runningonair

"In this video I test out the new Interphase Cartograph from Phantom Exposure.

https://phantomexposure.org/instrumen...

This synth is based on iPD synthesis as used by the Casio VZ range, but it has been significantly expanded."

Music/Support: New Album, BandCamp, Spotify, Merch, PayPal

Interphase Cartograph

"Interactive phase distortion, the Casio VZ engine rebuilt and then extended — two modules per line, one bending or ring-modulating the other, with AM and through-zero FM added.

Interactive phase distortion — iPD — is the technique behind Casio’s VZ-series synthesizers of the late 1980s. Rather than mixing raw oscillator waveforms, it pairs two sound-generating modules into a line and lets one shape the other: bending its phase, or multiplying into it as a ring modulator. The character sits between subtractive and FM — glassy, bell-like, vocal or metallic, and equally capable of plain tones when the interaction stays subtle.

Classic reproduces the original four-line, eight-module architecture with eight iPD waveforms and eight-stage envelopes. Extended adds two more lines, twelve modules, a sixteen-waveform bank, and two interactions the hardware never had: amplitude modulation and through-zero FM. The two are switchable from the header at any time.

Around the engine sit a sixteen-route modulation matrix, a bipolar pitch envelope, patch vibrato and tremolo, an arpeggiator, microtonal tuning with historical temperaments, six performance macros, unison, two LFOs and a randomiser that can roll a whole patch or mutate the one you have. The display is drawn in an OLED style with cyan and amber themes."

Drifting away and blissing out with Spotykach

video upload by Oscillator Sink

"This year at Superbooth, one of the tents that I returned to multiple times was the Synthux Academy tent, mostly to snatch another few minutes with, what is arguably their current flagship product: Spotykach.

Spotykach is one of those wonderful bits of gear that sits in the intersection of effect and instrument, and its focus is around exploring looping in all its forms - emulating tape techniques as well as various eras of digital looping and sampling. It feels to me like a companion to the music making process. It’s surprising without being unpredictable, new ideas are readily born out of whatever input you provide - a perpetual stream of happy accidents.

It can also be approached in many different ways, but in this video as we explore its features, I’m going to focus on one particular way of using it - a more open, unsynchronized, exploratory approach, which is how I’ve been enjoying using it, but it also can be very rhythmic, controlled too - it has a full MIDI implementation and a lot of features around clock synchronization - but I am who I am and I am feeling a little ambient."

Vult Overon Tutorial — VCV Rack | Complete Synth Voice + Preset Showcase

video upload by SATURATA MODULAR

"In this VCV Rack tutorial, we take a deep look at Vult Overon, a complete synthesizer voice inspired by the classic Oberheim SEM architecture.

We’ll explore how Overon works, its two oscillators, state-variable filter, envelopes, LFO, VCA, internal modulation and normalled signal paths — and how to break those connections to use Overon in more modular ways.

After the tutorial, I’ll demonstrate a collection of presets and patches I made for Overon. You can download them and use them in your own VCV Rack patches.

Reproducing Chaos, ENIGMA Synth Patch Template

video upload by substatica drones

"Demonstrating a free printable PDF patch template for the ENIGMA synthesizer, allowing us to record, or plan, object placement. The same objects in the same placement should reproduce the same sound. Play the ENIGMA synthesizer by placing metallic objects on its surface. The ENIGMA is available now from SOMA LABORATORY.

ENIGMA Patch Template PDF - https://substatica.com/enigma

ENIGMA is an innovative synthesizer fully controlled by the position and movement of metallic objects. Through a unique interface developed by SOMA, every metal object placed on the surface is transformed into sound. The shape, size, and type of object are entirely up to you. Coins, screws, fragments, gears, tools, and any other metallic artifacts will work. The interface sensitivity is extremely high — even a fractional millimeter shift of an object can alter the sound.

MIDI and CV clock sync are included , as well as MIDI note control."

Experimental Electronica w/ Analog Synths & Ambient Engine | Transcendence 2026-09-14 by atnr

video upload by atnr

"Experimental electronica created with the Prophet-10, Moog One, Nord Lead, MS-20, OP-1 field, and Ambient Engine.

This is the 1000th entry in the Daily Sound Experiment series.

On the Prophet-10, synth pads are performed with reverb through the blueSky.

The MS-20 plays a bassline via MIDI sent from Ableton Live. During the intro, the filter resonance is adjusted in real time.

The Nord Lead and Moog One are performed by hand during the middle of the track.

The OP-1 field plays a rhythm pattern via MIDI from Ableton Live. Modulation is applied with the CWO effect, while the MOTHER effect adds gated reverb. The output is then processed through the MOOD MKII with additional pitch shifting and delay.

In Ambient Engine, sine wave samples are loaded and played as sustained tones while the MicroLoop effect is applied.

On this channel I explore many styles of music using field recordings, DIY instruments, and hardware.

Catch up on previous Daily Sound Experiment entries here:"
