Introducing MUM M8 DSP - Low Pass Filter Plug-in
video upload by ALM TV
"‘MUM M8 DSP’ is a low pass filter plug-in emulating the filter used in the classic Akai S950 12 bit sampler with the addition of resonance, saturation and bit depth reduction. This in turn emulates our MUM M8 eurorack module which uses a similar filter design.
In this video we take a quick look at the MUM M8 DSP processing multiple sources in Ableton Live.
The low pass filter gives the recognisable super smooth vacuum like tone sucking sound which works magic on complex sources. The addition of clipped overdrive and intentionally aggressive self oscillating resonance compliment the smooth filter core by juxtaposing it into more wasp like territory with acidic squeals and a more gritty sound.
Unique to the plug-in are a clock bleed switch, introducing audible artifacts into the filter path emulating some of the quirks of the original hardware, and a Bit Depth control for downsampling the input for a more character-rich output.
‘MUM M8 DSP’ offers an authentic digital emulation of the original hardware, recreating its distinct sonic character for use for use in your DAW.

Random sequencing with control
The Metal Fetishist features two randomness generators. At every trigger step of the sequence, the Random Step Mod section creates a new modulation value that can modify the Pitch, the amount of Noise or the filter Cut-Off value, while the modulation amount can be selected manually. At every sequence step, the Random Skips control decides if the current step will trigger or not, based on the skipping amount selected. The big STEPS knob won't do anything at its OFF position, leaving the synth in completely random mode! But as you turn it right it will lock the previously generated random step values into repeatable sequences of length 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32. Have fun with it!"

2023/06 - Norns Dub
video upload by Stereoping
"Summer tunes warmup. The Monome Norns running the beautiful 'RAINDROPS' script is sent through a DIY-PCB Juno-6 Chorus with Stereo-mod. The Norns is intentionally not temposynced and accompanied by a modded Alesis HR-16 which makes funny things when one of the Voice Eproms is removed. The HR-16's audio runs through a Yamaha CS-5 lowpass into a DIY Axoloti-based effects unit with lots of knobs for realtime tweaking Reverb/Delay and a little granulizer. The HR-16's midiclock drives a Volca Drum with Midi-Out-mod. The Volca's sequencer's Midinotes (incl. probablitiy and ratchetings) are converted by a little DIY Midi-box into the suitable notes for the Solin8 (starting at 3:10), a cheap 8bit-glitch teensy-based WAV-Drumsounds-Player with downsampling faders. New Mutable Instruments Beads Texture Synthesiser Eurorack Module
Playlist:
1. Mutable Instruments Beads - exploration and tutorial by Tom Leclerc
2. Mutable Instruments Beads (no input) by Robin Rimbaud-Scanner
First play with the Mutable Instruments Beads texture synthesiser. And here's a wonderful surprise - if you leave both audio inputs unpatched, then after 10 seconds it begins to granulise a collection of stored raw waveforms taken from Mutable Instruments Plaits wavetable module. So here's a piece using Beads as the lead voice on this cinematic piece, with no other inputs. I added other instruments afterwards for rhythm and bass, and the singular pulse that holds throughout is from the Make Noise Mysteron. This is just an idea to show Beads in a very musical context3. Heidi Concrète (featuring Mutable Instruments Beads) by Robin Rimbaud-Scanner
An experimental piece using Mutable Instruments Beads, the texture synthesiser, processing an audio file. No addition effects or processing were used. This is simply a live exploration of a single audio file with Beads. The original voice introduces and closes the piece so you can compare the two sonic worlds before and after Beads. The voice is taken from a scanned phone call in the early 1990s that features on my Delivery (1997) album.4. A Little Beat with Mutable Instruments Beads (Wavetable Mode) by midcentury modular
This is Beads running in the internal wavetable mode (and a kick drum from plaits). I've got a gate going into freeze that acts as a mute when the kick comes in (sort-of side-chain like), and I'm also manually pressing it to mute and sustain the random sequence.5. Overdriven Ambient Looping with Mutable Instruments Beads by midcentury modular
The pitches are not from an external cv source but generated internally with the peaky random distribution into the time knob. The pitch changes with this parameter seem to be somewhat harmonically related (though I'm not sure what specific scale) to the root set by the pitch parameter.
This video is some improvised choir sounds (from the Ableton Operator synth, played with a midi keyboard) ran into Mutable Instruments Beads in the delay/looper mode (with "sunny tape quality") Throughout, I add to the buffer by tapping out of freeze mode and back in. When the feedback is up, things stick around, so you can progressively add more and build up the buffer. I'm also experimenting with overdriving the input (by turning up the audio level going into beads from ableton with the top left 1U knob)6. Mutable Instruments Beads (Scorched Cassette Mode) and Ciat-Lonbarde Plumbutter Deerhorn by midcentury modular
This patch is my attempt at using Beads to add some Cocoquantus-like magic to the Deerhorn. I think the downsampling, lower-bitrate and whatever other DSP tricks are happening in the Scorched Cassette mode are crerating a somewhat similar vibe to the 8-bit dolby loopers in the Coco, and I think this adds some really nice fizzy textures to the warm, raw-oscillator tone of the Deerhorn). Beads is also pitching down the two tones from Deerhorn to add a bit more melodic content.7. Noisy Experimenting with Mutable Instrument Beads, Blades Ripples and Plaits
There is some very subtle modulation coming from the orange out on Deerhorn, but it's not really doing a ton and could probably be left out and you wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference. There is some audio-rate modulation coming out of one of the white deerhorn outputs into the density input, which is modulating some of the AM stuff going on when density is high towards the end of the track.
No idea why the snapping gesture with the density knob caused the "knock on wood" sound, but I think it was a pretty cool accident!
This patch (at least as much as I remember it...been a while since I made this) is Beads and Blades in a sort-of feedback loop. Blades is over-driven and self-oscillating, and the outs are sent to control seed and freeze on Beads (which is using the internal wavetable generator as audio input). After trying out various ones, I found these two control inputs on Beads the most interesting with audio rate signals. The outs of Beads are going into the audio inputs of blades. Both modules outs are multed out and into veils which is acting as a stereo mixer. Ripples (which is getting some noise into its cutoff modulation input from Plaits) is providing some audio rate modulation to some of the Veils channels.
"Beads is a reinvention of Mutable Instruments’ Clouds.
The concept is the same, live granular processing of an incoming audio signal, and the labels on the panel remain familiar.
The similarities stop here. The hardware and software have been redesigned from the ground up, with several goals in mind: a crisper and broader sound palette, more control, better playability, and direct access to exciting new features.
DOTTING THE I’S AND CROSSING THE T’S
Beads’ vastly improved specifications allow a higher audio quality, a longer buffer, the use of better interpolation and anti-aliasing algorithms, and key DSP blocks to run at a faster rate. Granular processing can now go to new territories, such as formants, wavetables, hard-sync-like sounds, or crispy noise.
The range of parameters, their response to the turn of a knob or a CV modulation have all been refined, for new possibilities such as reverse playback or percussive envelopes.
CONTROL, CHAOS AND CHARACTER
Control. To trigger or schedule grains, Beads provides new features to divide or randomize an external clock or trigger stream, spray bursts of grains in response to a gate, or get the grain rate to track a V/O CV or the frequency of an external oscillator.
Chaos. Each key parameter of a grain comes with its own attenurandomizer, which allows direct CV control, CV control of the randomization (spread) of this parameter, or internal randomization using some of Marbles’ algorithms.
Character. Beads provides four audio quality settings, which go well beyond buffer sample rate and bit-depth: they affect the clock of the converters, the amplitude limiting and saturation of the signal path, the tone of the reverb, and additional media-emulation effects. From a pristine digital device to a dirty cassette, through a mode reproducing some of Clouds’ characteristics.
MODES?
Beads can operate as a delay without the need to switch to a different mode: just ask it to play a never-ending grain. Its DENSITY, TIME and SEED controls are repurposed to allow various features such as tap-tempo, beat slicing, time-stretching, or comb-filtering at rates tracking V/O.
Without any audio input, Beads will granularize 8 internal banks of wavetables.
All parameters have a dedicated knob."

Hello Spice: Unboxing Plankton Electronic's semi-modular saturation unit
Olivier Ozoux
Plankton Spice posts
"So, about 2 years ago, I received this email from Alex at Plankton Electronics:
------------
yes.
We’re designing a new machine. Actually it is almost designed already.
The machine will be a distorting unit. Standalone but eurorack suitable, semimodular, several distorting circuits. Stages are:
- Filter section (LP and HP)
- Digital section (Bit crush and Downsampling)
- Analog (9 disotrtion circuits one of them being a Nu-tube)
- Mixing section (dry and wet).
Then a feedback control with an insert between. From the analog section back into the filter. And also an envelope follower normaled to the filter input but breakable with normal and inverted outs (very good to control the filters before the distortion.
The idea of using HP and LP before the distortion circuit comes from the process of filtering the signal before the clipping stage in all the distortion circuits in the market. Generally is what defines the sound. The different distortion circuits will add more or less harmonics, being a compressed clipped signal, a fuzz, or the even harmonics produced by the tube.
Each section has its own I/O so you can skip the digital section if you want to avoid the 12bit of maximum bit rate or if you want to change the order. Overall it’s a very versatile distortion unit.
--------------
the spice is amazing, and I can't believe it took me this long to make a video about it. Full disclosure, even though I got early access to the design, I purchased my own unit as part of the Kickstarter launch campaign."

Divkid's RND STEP overview and demo at Patchwerks!
Patchwerks Seattle
"RND STEP is a high performance, 3 channel sample and hold module, comprising of 6 unique sample and hold circuits in just 4HP.
Each channel features two internal analogue pink noise generators, and two sample and hold circuits split across unipolar and bipolar outputs. The unipolar output always samples its own noise source for a stepped random voltage between 0-5V. The bipolar output by default samples it’s own noise source (for -5V to +5V stepped random). However, you can override that connection with the sample input. This allows for sampling external audio or CV signals, and it can sample voltages anywhere between -10V and +10V with the sample input.
RND STEP will operate at slow trigger rates with highly extended hold times, ensuring it holds the voltage with minimal droop, but it will also operate up through audio rates for destructive downsampling FX for audio. When triggered at audio rates RND STEP outputs downsampled and clocked noise tones from the internal pink noise generators. These can then be used for modulation, percussion or sound FX.
Trigger input 1 will normalize across all 3 channels, meaning a single trigger can give 6 unique random voltages, of which 3 are bipolar and 3 are unipolar. The combination of both ensures you have the right voltages in the correct ranges for the sources you wish to modulate.

NEW DIVKID MODULE // 'RND STEP' with Steady State Fate // 6 High performance Sample & Holds!
DivKidVideo
"Here we have the new (third) DivKid Eurorack module made in collaboration with Steady State Fate. RND STEP is 6 high performance analogue sample and holds split across 3 channels in 4HP. There's 6 analogue pink noise generators, unipolar and bipolar outputs, high accuracy sampling, long hold time, trigger normalisation for lots of stepped modulation from single triggers, audio rate performance for downsampling and modulated noise tones. I'll leave the video to do the talking and as always I hope the video provides you with lots of ideas to apply to your own systems too.

Future Sound Systems OSC2 Recombination Engine // a UNIQUE triple analogue Eurorack oscillator
Published on Apr 10, 2020 DivKidVideo
"Here we have a total unique triple analogue (or analog for our stateside friends) oscillator for the Eurorack format from Future Sound Systems. The OSC2 Recombination Engine has a master ‘Scissor’ oscillator that can audio rate switch, sync and glue waveforms together from separate positive and negative DNA oscillators. The Glue section is a VCA that merges the positive and negative waves at the rate of the Scissor with options for additional level modulation and mixing internal or external sounds with an added input.
It’s a massively varied unit with everything from soft and sweet sines and triangles working independently to a totally mad as a box of frogs noise oscillator and everything in between. Coaxing out digital DX style musical FM has been easy, it’s a total wizard with AM synthesis and the unique wave the waveform level VCAs work. So I look forward to further exploration.

Qu-Bit Prism // Stereo Eurorack Multidimensional Signal Processor
Published on Apr 24, 2019 DivKidVideo
"Qu-Bit say that Prism "is a multidimensional signal processor that creates a framework for the spectral metamorphosis of any input signal" and "Prism blurs the lines between DSP effect, filter, and looper and transcends into a new realm of uncharted audio processing." At it's core Prism is 3 things (all in stereo) a filter, a delay/comb and a decimator. The filter is multimode and can be place pre/post the other FX, the delay can do long echoes, slap-back and comb filter FX as well as a clocked delay mode, decimate is downsampling and bit crushing and you can freeze/loop the audio buffer too.

New Qu-Bit Prism - Multidimensional Signal Processor Eurorack Module
Published on Mar 14, 2019 Qu - Bit
"Prism is a multidimensional signal processor that creates a framework for the spectral metamorphosis of any input signal.
This stereo audio buffer can be navigated through on 3 axes, each of which provides a different sonic journey through its array of time based controls.
The X and Z planes are home to a flexible delay line capable of long clocked delays, slapback echo, or comb filtered vocoder-esque timbres. On the Y axis is the decimate control. This sets the audio fidelity of the buffer by manipulating the sample rate and bit depth of the output. A state variable filter with configurable low pass, high pass, and band pass outputs can be enabled at the beginning or end of the signal chain providing yet another dimension of spectral transformation. And thanks to its digital architecture, the current buffer contents can be locked in place with the Freeze control, creating glitch and beat repeat effects which can be synced to an external clock source.
The Prism blurs the lines between DSP effect, filter, and looper and transcends into a new realm of uncharted audio processing."
Qu-Bit Electronix Prism *FIRST PATCH* // Stereo Eurorack FX, filter and more!
Published on Mar 14, 2019 DivKidVideo
"So here's the new Prism from Qu-Bit Electronix and here's my first patch playing around with it before the full in depth demo follows in the near future. It's a stereo input and output multimode filter, freezer, comb filter / delay line and decimator (downsampling). The combination of FX pairs together really well and it's taken to a load of modulation really nicely too."
