Yamaha DX-7IID

via this auction

"The 'new generation' of DX synthesizers (Mark II). This model has everything the DX7s added plus: 2-channel tone generator, which allows bi-timbral effects including stereo, splits, and layers. each of the two tone generators can be controlled independently via MIDI on separate channels, making the DX7IID do the work of two DX7s keyboards. larger LCD display and an extra LED voice display for the second channel's voice number"

YAMAHA SS 30

via this auction
"Very rare yamaha ss 30 vintage string synth , never released in the US
- often compared to the ARP Solina String Synth .

A chunky (its heavy, 20kg!!) wood veneered string synth from the 70's. Its a dedicated string synth with all the control needed to make those 70's string sounds. It really has a rich and lush sound , wonderfully simple and effective controls.
This example is 100% working and cosmetically in excellent condition except for some small chips to the veneer.

Control section running from left to right
pitch/ detune - The outer pot adjusts the overall tuning and the inner pot detunes the voices against the pitch which can produce a wonderful thickening effect ( some sources describe this synth as a duphonic/ multiphonic ,others describe it as a 4 voice polyphonic. It uses divide down chips enabling all keys to be played at once)

Orchestra -Depth ( Speed 1/2 ,cello ,violin ) A great ensemble effect with 2 different effect types (speed) and the ability to separate the effect between cello and violin ( so you can have ,for example cello effect and violins dry )

Vibrato ,Delay/Depth- Very nice vibrato effect.

Sustain, Cello /Violin - sustain 1 control each for cello and violin giving again the ability to have separate amount of sustain for cello and violin sections . Very short to very long .

Keyboard split 0/1/2/3 .0 setting is no split and just the violin sound over the whole range. 1 gives a split with the lowest octave for cellos the rest strings. 2 setting gives 1 and a half octaves to the cello . 3 gives 2 octaves to the cello. The splits are indicated by a white dot above the note on the control panel
Cello ,Volume, attack/slow ,cello1/cello2 - control section for cellos giving control over attack fast/slow. Choice of 2 cello sounds.

Violin Attack/Slow, Viola/violin1/Violin2 /Volume - Same as cello control section though the volume is at the far right.

Brilliance Cello/Violin Very usable low pass filter for cello and violin."

1Song1Week1Year - Week 27- TFT

YouTube via DJDJSMusic | July 03, 2010

"Week 27 in my epic quest to write one new song each week for a year.
In contrast to the excitement of last week this week I was feeling Tired, Frustrated and Tense(T.F.T.). It is also the first week of my year long project where I started to write the song at 9:30 pm on the day I was due to post it :)

This week was tiring because I have just finished writing a novel and spent about 25/30 hours formatting it in order to create a print ready copy that I could self publish as a paperback book, only to be frustrated when I realised that my plan was to launch my novel as an ebook first and all the formatting that I did to create a good paperback book had to be undone in order to create a good ebook. And tense because on top of my normal commitments as a "stay at home dad" who's children have just gotten their summer holidays, I was knocked out of with a migraine for half Wednesday and Thursday and didn't really have must time to do anything properly.

However if you are interested in my other life as "Declan Stanley" you can check out my novel "Alice" at: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view..."

Synth Rorschach #1

flickr by gordonwatts

I subscribe to the term "synth" on flickr. When I see something that meets the bar I put a post up. Every now and then an image or more like this comes up. Anyone know why this one might have the synth label? I can of course ask the person that put it up, but then there's no fun in that. That a Creamware synth there above the doors there in the balcony? A KORG PS-3200? Actually, it looks like a Mattson Mini Modular.

Steiner Synthasystem Updates

Two new posts on Analogue Realities

V.C. Oscillator
Triple Envelope Generator

Interesting bits on graphic design: "Nyle sent me scans of the original artwork for the Frequency Divider panel which will help me get a better match with the panels I'm doing. For my stuff, I've always used Bulgarian for the module name and then a casual script like font for the pots, jacks, etc. Nyle likes a blockish, sans-serif font like he did originally, and I think he's right. I re-did the Triple Envelope Generator panel with pot tic marks, a Helvetica font slightly angled and used all caps for the letters, like Nyle did. I think it looks good."

One thing to consider is the historical relevance of this project. This is Nyle Steiner, maker of the Steiner-Parker Synthacon, Steiner EVI, and of course the Synthasystem, classic vintage analog synths from the mid 1970s. Realize this was before Tom Oberheim and Dave Smith came out with their classic synths. Many modular manufactures have filters based on his design. See the Steiner Parker label below for more.

Nyle Steiner is a major part of synth history and he is back.

Update via dingbre in the comments: "One quick comment on the graphics, the gray discs are not really part of the panel layout, but a check to make sure the knobs wouldn't cover the tic marks. I've chosen an Alco phenolic, 19 mm diameter knob. It's knurled, with an aluminum insert, and skirt. A slightly smaller version of the classic knobs Nyle used back then."

Buchla 200e Klinic - August 7 2010 - Chicago USA

"Thee XART Labor für Akustisch-Musikalische Grenzprobleme + TRASHAUDIO.COM will be hosting more fun for Summer 2010!

Buchla 200e Klinic - August 7 2010 - Chicago USA.

This is an early warning so you can make plans to attend. We we will be having associate Jon Schatz in town to teach/show us tips and tricks + answer questions on the Buchla 200e.

Jon has been an associate of Don Buchla since early 2009. He assists in every aspect of the business from firmware development and design to yard work. He's even been known to swap 20 caps on 20 boards in need of another mod that's documented on a different schematic that can't be found, but knows he can call someone somewhere who knows. He's scrappy like that.

While Jon has a background in technology—math and computer science specifically— he's been playing music as long as he's been programming thanks to the Vic-20's POKE and PEEK. He also plays actual non-electronic instruments: drums, percussion, tympani, guitar and piano as well as instruments that blink in the dark.

Jon will give a brief demo on a few modules he is bringing (including a 222e) and will do a Q&A. Then, it's onto playtime.

This all day workshop is open to everyone BUT seating/spots will be limited (to about 20-ish people).

If you are interested email: kultbox@gmail.com please put ///Chicago 200e Klinic/// in the subject! We will forward information on how to attend!"
