via this auction

"The Prophet-5 is an analog synthesizer that was designed and manufactured by Sequential Circuits between 1978 and 1984. With five voices of polyphony, the Prophet-5 is one of the first polyphonic analog synthesizers with patch memory. About 6,000 units were produced in three revisions by Dave Smith and John Bowen. The Prophet-5 is known for its use by progressive rock bands and film composers.

This unit is a Rev 3.3 with 120 programs, still housed in it’s original box. This one is exceptionally clean and in very good working condition. This piece has been serviced and tested, but the new owner may benefit from a more comprehensive inspection. This Prophet-5 is 110/220 VAC voltage selectable and comes with a Hosa FSC-502 foot-pedal. See photo’s for additional details."

New Synthrotek RND Module Now Available

Published on Feb 4, 2017 synthrotek

via Synthrotek

"Introducing the Synthrotek RND! It’s like math.random() for modular gear!

This handy module is a feature rich random voltage generator that is shallow and super powerful. It outputs random voltages (similar to a sample and hold) in time with either its internal clock, or with an external clock you can patch in. An external clock will bypass the internal clock, and the CV jack over the clock, so your random voltages will always be in sync with whatever you patch in. With CV control over both the clock speed and the range of your output voltage, you could create anything from a wildly fluctuating blur of notes all the way to a slow, lilting tune. The RND can also be used as a clock source with it’s clock out jack.

Features:

Clock Speeds:
Slow Range: 0.5Hz to 10Hz
Medium Range: 2Hz to 40Hz
Fast Range: 16Hz to 320Hz
Linear CV control over clock speed and range"

CV Sequencer as an Oscillator Revisited - Eurorack Modular Experiment

Published on Feb 4, 2017 FatSynthDude

"I did a video of this like seven years ago, but the image quality sucked, and I recorded the audio with the damn camera like an asshole. So I thought I'd revisit the idea in a vid since the topic came up on Gearslutz. Nothing fancy going on here: Stillson Hammer mkII sends CV signals to a Make Noise STO, which in turn is clocking the Analogue Solutions Oberkorn at audio rates. From there, I'm just changing the value of different steps. I made sure to show that some basic waveshapes can be made in this video. There's a square wave I morphed into a PWM pulse by bringing harmonics in and out and there's a point where there's a double saw wave that was built (each saw was 8-steps, so essentially a series of saws played an octave up.) I also demonstrated how by having alternating steps that are minimized and maximized, you can create some square wave octave effects. And of course, I went out of my way to make unusual waveshapes just to show that a sixteen step sequencer can do all kinds of madness."

The SH-3A does use a transistor ladder-filter and as a result can generate Moog-like sounds."

Oberheim Matrix 12 with Benden Display Upgrade

Uploaded on Feb 3, 2017 Blurphy Murph

via this auction

via the listing: "Get your hands on one of the most powerful analog synths of the 1980's! I bought this Matrix from Sam Ash in LA and it's been well-maintained. Over the summer I had the encoder knobs replaced with parts from SYNTAUR and are 100% functional. It has always passed the "tune all" diagnostics (see photos). I also upgraded the original VFD's (displays) with more resilient ones from Benden Technology. In fact, I actually got the very last replacement they made. I will include the original displays as well. There are a few scratches on the metal parts of the frame (see photos) and under the keybed, where paint has chipped. On the side wood panels, one of the original screws is missing. Other than that, I'd say it's in very good shape for a 32-year-old synth.

The synth itself is incredible- for a non-modular the modulation options are seemingly limitless due to Oberheim's "Modulation Matrix." You can program it from the front panel but I would strongly recommend a sysex editor to really get into the deep menus. And of course, the VCO sound is thick, lush, and rich right out of the box, but it can sound bell-like and even a bit DX7-ish if you want.

Check out the video for a few sample patches."

Introducing Melu Instruments Freak (Eurorack Oscillator)

Published on Feb 3, 2017 Melu Instruments

Note this is the first Melu Instruments post. We have a new maker in town.

"Heidi demonstrates some of the things Freak can do. Freak is a phase synchronized dual oscillator module for Eurorack modular synths."

Some extra notes for the 2nd video: "External ADSR and LFO was used to modulate some sounds. Some sounds were tweaked by hand. No filters, distortion, effects, EQ or extra layering was used in these audio examples. Everything was recorded straight from Freak without any processing."

via Melu Instruments

"Phase Synchronized Dual Oscillator

Freak is a dual oscillator for Eurorack modular synthesizers. The two digital oscillators can be phase synchronised with each other and have dedicated audio outputs. This makes it easy to process them separately while resulting in sharp and well defined bass and lead sounds. The integrated audio rate modulator creates complex and interesting timbres in an instant.

Effortless Yet Powerful

Modern music production techniques often rely on layering instruments to build the final bass and lead sounds. Drifting phases between layers make the sound less defined and less sharp. If sharpness and definition is the goal, the challenge usually is keeping the sound layers phase synchronized. This can be cumbersome even on modular systems while modulating two oscillators in audio rates. Keeping the layers in sync could become impossible if different synthesis methods are used for each layer. Freak has been designed to address this issue.

Freak contains two oscillators. Oscillator 1 consists of 8 different waveforms and has a dedicated audio rate modulator. Oscillator 2 consists of 8 more complex sound generation algorithms. Both oscillators can be phase synchronized when needed.

Both oscillators have their own dedicated audio outputs. Mix Out provides an easy way to crossfade between the two oscillators.

Several different synthesis methods are used to create a wide palette of layered sounds: virtual analog, frequency modulation, phase modulation and phase distortion. The UI has been designed to make sound design workflow quick, easy and intuitive."

Roland JD-Xi editor for Patch Base on iPad

via Coffeeshopped

"The latest update to Patch Base adds a fully-featured program/patch editor for the Roland JD-Xi, bringing the number of supported synths in Patch Base to 30! This new editor is the most complex yet in the Patch Base collection, including support for the JD-Xi's 2 digital synths, analog monosynth, sample-based drum machine, and on-board effects and mixing.

The hundreds of parameters that the JD-Xi uses are all here, allowing for a sound design experience far beyond what's available using the JD-Xi's built-in controls (unless you enjoy hours of menu diving!). All of this control is achieved via a 5-page layout for the editor. In addition to the individual controls, many aspects of your patches can be copied, pasted, and randomized. And as always, Patch Base allows you to store and organize these sounds on your iPad for later use, backup, and sharing."

(*A note about ROM and RAM in case you're unsure: ROM cartridges are Read Only Memory which means you can't twick or edit them - set in concrete. The RAM cartridges, on the other hand, can be edited or even completely replaced by whatever your creativity can come up with.) You'll have both the RAM 32 and the 4-bank RAM 128 spots to do just that - in many instances I chose not to play around (there was plenty for me as is) so there's some duplication from ROM to RAM, but again I would encourage experimentation to create your individual RAM patches. In all, there are 32 Internals, 128 ROMs, 32 RAM1s from Yamaha, and 128 RAMs in the 4-Bank Microtel for a total of 320."
