IO Instruments KALYKE / dual function generator / ADSR & LFO / extensive playthrough

video upload by BRiES

"In this video I demonstrate the full functionality of KALYKE by IO Instruments. KALYKE is a digital module that can be a dual envelope, an ADSR envelope and an LFO or a dual LFO, it really depends on how you set it up. There's a lot of versatility to explore with this 16HP piece of gear. I've recorded a bunch of patch and sound examples, and of course a long segment where I go over every knob, button, input and output.

IO Instruments aim at lower budgets without sacrificing quality. I think you'll see that KALYKE is indeed feature packed and it has a few tricks up its sleeve that I haven't seen on any other envelope or LFO module.

0:05 hi
1:06 sounds and patches
9:54 LFO overview
25:24 ADSR section overview
42:08 closing thoughts and build quality
43:57 thanks for watching

DISCLAIMER: I was supported by IO Instruments to make this video but whatever I explain and show in these videos are my opinions and experiences. My goal is to demonstrate the functionality of a module as detailed as possible, so everyone watching this video can decide whether KALYKE is something they want or need. I'm not here to tell you what to like."

IO-Lights – Light sensitive MIDI controller

instruments of things

"IO-Lights is a MIDI controller that controls MIDI CC or MIDI Note signals via environmental light. A high-resolution light sensor in the center of the product makes it possible. via Instruments of Things

"The instrument of lights – IO-Lights is a MIDI controller that controls MIDI CC or MIDI Note signals via environmental light. A high-resolution light sensor in the center of the product makes it possible. In addition, MIDI notes can also be sent to IO-Lights, which are then represented as light by the 12 LEDs on the device.

How to use IO-Lights?

IO-Lights is used as a common MIDI controller. Just connect it via USB to the music software of your choice and start controlling sounds with light. You want to connect IO-Lights to your hardware synthesizer? Then simply use an additional USB MIDI host (e.g. this). The internal MIDI configuration can be changed via MIDI SysEx in a web app, which we will present to you soon!

Light to MIDI:

In the center of IO-Lights is a high-resolution light sensor that measures brightness. Use your surrounding light or a light source of your choice and point it at IO-Lights to control your sound.

MIDI Modes:

MIDI Notes: Use IO-Lights to play notes via light. MIDI Control Change: Use IO-Lights to control parameters via light.

MIDI to Light:

IO-Lights can not only control MIDI signals, but also visualize MIDI notes by the 12 LEDs on the product UI. Therefore simply send MIDI notes to IO-Lights. This is where the magic happens: the resulting light also influences the MIDI signals that IO-Lights emit. This creates a generative sound-light interaction.

Random Light:

Let IO-Lights generate light randomly. This looks nice. And? – And also influences your sound parameters by the resulting change of luminosity."

Quick Jam: IO Instruments Eurorack Modules

Perfect Circuit

"IO Instruments has some interesting eurorack modules out and some more on the way. We put together this small system with a few of their modules including the Himalia which is a sound source with 5 generators including filtered analog noise, digital noise, a square wave oscillator, sampler with lots of built in drum sounds and a chord generator. IO also has basic modules like the Themisto VCO, Euporie VCF, Pashiphae ring mod, Sinope VCA and Sponde mixer that add clever and useful extra features. All of the IO modules also have colorful knobs and a halftone paint job that makes them look great together.

We added in a Noise Engineering BIA for the kick, Intellijel Quadrax for envelopes and a Malekko Quad VCA for mixing and extra VCAs. Everything is sequenced with the Arturia Keystep Pro.

NAMM 2023 - Mntra Instruments - MNDALA 2 Player - Arca - Atma

video upload by sonicstate

"At NAMM 2023, Sonic State met with Brian and Noah from Mntra Instruments to discuss MDALA 2 and the suite of instruments it controls. MDLA 2 is an audio engine that uses ultrasonically sampled sound, based on the principle of game audio, where everything is reactive based on complex real-time parameter controls. One control can quickly lead to a lot of expression, which would normally take many passes of automation to happen.

MNDALA 2, which is free to download, is needed to use their instruments, such as Atma, which is based on sacred sounds like sampled bells and all kinds of instruments from all over the world. Arca is their strings library, and they currently have eleven different instruments available on their website, two of which are free to use.

MNDALA 2 Price: Free

Mntra Instruments Price: 59 USD - 149 USD

IO Instruments - SPONDE patch examples

video by IO Instruments

"SPONDE might look like a simple nature on the surface. But when used smart, it can be used in many different ways as a center piece of a modular system.

- 6 channel stereo mixer
- 2 x 6 mono mixer
- mix 6 audio and 6 CV signal in parallel
- 8 x attenuator and 2 x 2 mixer (for audio or CV) at the same time

.. and many other combinations.

Let us kick off a little patch series:
- one mixer channel to be used as a submix to feed into a filter
- mix audio and CV material in parallel
- a jam using the direct outs/attenuators

Chapters:
00:00 - Intro
00:15 - SPONDE recap - what is it
00:50 - Patch example: submixer
03:08 - Patch example: audio + CV mixing in parallel

Published on Apr 29, 2016 S. B. Arweiler

"PATCH NOTES:
The whole patch is controlled by the Monome White Whale with one CV channel controlling the Mutable Instruments Braids in WMAP mode, and the second CV channel controlling the Mutable Instruments Rings. One gate channel of the White Whale triggers the Tip Top BD808 bass drum, the second gate channel triggers an envelope which controls Braids's output through a MakeNoise Optomix. Another gate channel triggers Strum on the Rings. The fourth gate channel triggers the Reset of the MusicThing RadioMusic, which plays a one note guitar chord sample which then again is being sent through the Mutable Instruments Clouds. Intellijel Quadra LFOs do some modulation on Braids and Rings, and the Evaton Technologies RF Nomad through the second OptoMix channel provides some noisy percussion.
