Vocoder Tutorial on the Roland SP-808ex

YouTube via stealthgear
"Vocoder Tutorial for SP-808
This machine is not always immediate without a manual, but you can get good results with it and it has great FX. The Vocoder is one of those things that you need to know how to set up.

Make sure you don't have anything connected to input "L" !!! Unplug it (unless your using an externally preamped source and not the MIC input)

This is not a demonstration of its capabilities, just a tutorial."

Andromeda Unison

YouTube via thekilon
"This a sample of Andromeda's sonic character. What you listening here is a sound I made from scratch. The frist 2 minutes only 1 voice is used , in the last 2 the unison is on and uses all the 16 voices.

That is 32 oscilators and 32 suboscilators .... Armagedon... lol"

BugBrand BugCrusher & Rotating Clock Divider

YouTube via wonkythomas
"3 minutes after my first 10 minutes with the AMAZING BugBrand BugCrusher!!! So happy to finally have one of Toms blue bueties! This thing is awesome, super dense / compact PCB & the sound far surpasses my expectations (which where pretty high to begin with)

Pretty much the same as the last patch except the VCOs get run thru the BugCrusher, then into the CGS Wave Multiplier.... WOW! What a combination! Starts off with the sample rate really low & the VCOs tuned right down to LFO speeds, then ramps everything up. The BugCrusher rate is being CV'd by my Presets module which gives it that stepped, rythmic feel.

I increase the "Glide" amount - a LPF at audio rates & the sound loses all the harshness so the Wave Folding comes thru more & you end up with that 'sort of' plucked string sound. No filters (except inside the Crusher), no low pass gates, just loads twisted waveforms!"

4ms Rotating Clock Divider

YouTube via wonkythomas
"4ms RCD in Banana Frac format!!!
Yes! That is correct. Dann @4ms hooked me up with an RCD board, no panel etc. So, if you plugged your Euro RCD in backwards a little while ago THANK YOU!!!! Cos after it was fixed I bought it :D

This thing is way more fun than any module should legally be!

The "voice" here is two Blacet VCOs VC Waveforms, which are crossfaded, sometimes at audio rate, being sequenced by a combination of 2 Binary Zones, a Mini-Wave w/ scale quantizer & a Doepfer 156 Dual Quantizer - a little OTT.

The RCD takes the main clock (MFB Dual LFO squarewave) & spits pulses every which way. The 8008 is being triggered by a bunch of RCD outs run thru the Doepfer 152 sequential switch section.

Metalbox Dual AD is also getting triggered by the RCD & is CVing the CGS Wave Multiplier.

The combination of VC Waveforms, Crossfading & Wave Folding really peals my potatoes, just an absurb timbral range. FM the VC Mixer, modulate the harmonic content of the VCOs waveforms, wobble the folds... oh my days."

Collin's Lab: Kit-making

YouTube via makemagazine

"When recently faced with the dauntingly tedious task of assembling my first-ever batch of electronics kits, I was lucky enough to have the ever-helpful eye of seasoned kit-maker Becky Stern close by. While observing my one-man assembly 'process', Becky advised a more efficient, modular assembly line technique using intermediary storage vessels better known as "plastic cups". Streamlining the process left me with plenty of time to cook up some some unusually fancy title/motion graphics for the above-seen video.

Oskar Sala - Zeilgalerie in Frankfurt, 1993

YouTube via djaiyo.

via rustyanalog Don't miss this bit of synth history.

"From christian moeller's website, www.christian-moeller.com

Sala, a pioneer of electronic music played his Trautonium, an early electronic musical instrument invented in Berlin in 1930.
For this live performance, his concert was displayed as a gigantic video projection above the urban flow. The metal façade of the Zeilgalerie was turned into a giant TV screen in the public space."
This one originally posted at 7:19 PM, 3/2. Moving on top for a bit. Don't miss this.
See the Trautonium label directly below for more.

Update via Rick Jelliffe:
"The thing is that Sala extended the Trautonium (a playing device) with his own synthesis system: subharmonic synthesis. It is a Mixturtrautonium!

This allows much more chord-like notes to be created, with four subharmonics. So while he can only play one note at a time on the lower manual, that note goes to four subharmonic generators. He can select different sets of subharmonics (/12, /13, /14 etc) with a knee controller, if necessary. Because these can be written down, it allowed him to set up patches and replay compositions much more quickly than later modular VC systems.

The subharmonic system favours some kinds of chords (dim 7s for example), which explains some aspects of his compositions.

I have made a free VST using subharmonic synthesis that is available on the WWW. Like Sala's it has a frequency shifter, reverb and some resonators, and can switch between sets of subharmonics. The Neumixturtrautonium VST is available from lots of places on the web, and it has a sound of its own.

I believe Doepfer have a subharmonic module too, as may some other people.

Cheers
Rick Jelliffe"

Doepfer Regelwerk + MAM ADX-1 + x0xb0x + Roland SH-101 + Moogerfooger MF-101

YouTube via s0LVentCIty

"This Doepfer Regelwerk is currently being auctioned by me on Ebay, ending March 8 2010:

http://tinyurl.com/yj397wm

I created this video mainly to demonstrate this Regelwerk for my auction, but hopefully it will serve a purpose as a demonstration of the Regelwerk's sequencer mode, since there really aren't any good demos of this sequencer available on YouTube.

Just a brief description of how the Regelwerk works in sequencer mode:
- Sequencer uses sliders/buttons #9-24
- 8 tracks, max length 16 steps (Step on/off + Pitch + Velocity)
- Lower buttons 9-15 = Track edit select
- Lower buttons 16-24 = Track on/off (mute/unmute)
- Upper buttons 9-24 = Step on/off
- Step on/off + Pitch transmitted via corresponding CV/Gate channel outputs
- Step on/off + Pitch + Velocity transmitted via Midi Out 1 (midi channel can be set per track)

In this video:

- Midi-output-1 goes to MAM ADX-1
- Track 1 = ADX kick
- Track 2 = ADX snare
- Track 3 = ADX "synth" (lazer type sound)
- Track 4 = Closed HH
- Track 5 = Open HH

- Midi-output-2 sends midi clock to x0xb0x
- x0xb0x audio out into Moogerfooger MF-101
- Track 8 = CV-8 into MF-101 Filter-CV-In

- Track 6 = CV/Gate-6 into SH-101 CV/Gate-In
- Track 7 = CV-7 into SH-101 VCF-CV-In (an SH-101 mod)

Regarding the SH-101 sequence in the latter part of this demo... I realize it's not the greatest, but I wanted to demonstrate creating on-the-fly sequences with the Regelwerk.

- DIN sync output to TR-808 (seen under the MAM & x0x, but not being used in the mix)"

Update via dugernaut in the comments: "I'm a bit late to the party, but I thank you for all your comments.

For those that disliked my synth efforts, I can only say that the amount energy that went into creating that SteamPunk look is what TOTALLY inspired me to make this crazy machine in the first place. It was a complete labour of Love.

Since meeting Dr. Moog at his office in the late '60s / early '70s in Trumansburg, I've felt a special something for modular / analog synths.

You can take a Synth out of Modular, but you'll never take "modular" of of synth!

Rest in peace, Bob. I love you. I hope you're having a great time chatting with my father over a couple beers, watching a football game at that pub!"

Moroder and a Roland System 700 Modular

Image via this Sound on Sound article on Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer's ‘I Feel Love’. Note the article is primarily on the Moog modular and the image caption states "Giorgio Moroder with his Moog modular system" but that's actually a Roland System 700. I wonder what the story is behind this shot - is it his system and studio, was it sent in for the article? Regardless, it is a great article and Sound on Sound is a great synth magazine. Note the Roland MC-8 system and ARP 2600 to his right. Minimoog to his left. This one spotted and sent in via Thomas.

The Cure on Echo Des Bananas - Cold

YouTube via silong1976.

"1982-04-11 Best performance of this song I have ever seen"

I never realized the synths in this one reminded me a bit of Jean-Michel Jarre's Rendez-Vous. Some synth spotting: KORG Maxikorg 800DV, ?. Anyone recognize the bass pedals? They don't quite look like Moog Taurus pedals. What's under the Maxikorg. A bit OT, but does anyone else think the dude from the Twilight films looks like a young Robert Smith? I haven't seen them yet.

Update: some notes on the synths via Wid on the AH list:
"So here are the 3 main synths Matthieu Hartley used by 1980 :

- Korg Mini 700S.
- Roland SH-2.
- Roland RS-09 aka String Organ (late version with multicolored switches).

That's basically the sounds for "17 Seconds" : the Mini Korg was used to play the bass lines, the Roland SH-2 the higher register. Check out the video clip of "Play for Today". On stage, Hartley played the Mini 700S invariably, but switched between the 2 Rolands.

By then, Hartley was plugged in a Roland JC-120 amp. The SH-2 was dropped when Hartley left.

The RS-09 and Mini 700S were still used for "Faith" in 1981. Robert kept the RS-09 but added a Korg Maxi 800 DV to the rig. The intro of "Holy hour" was played with a RS-09, for example. "All cats are grey" and "The funeral party" were played with both RS-09 and Maxi 800 DV. The Korg Mini 700S was played by Simon Gallup on stage (for instance, on the intro of "A forest" and on "At night"). But this synth was not used after 1981, as far as I know.

Smith began adding some bass pedal synth too, by 1981 : in studio, some pictures clearly show a Moog Taurus. On stage their preference went to a far cheaper Eko K320 (played until 1982, for example on "Cold" by Simon Gallup).

The RS-09 was still used in 1982 : the synth heard on "One 100 years", played on stage by Lol Tolhurst. The Maxi 800 DV too (on "Cold" for the bass line, added to a - well I think, for this one I'm not 100 % sure, sorry - Korg Trident).

That's it for early early Cure synths. I really do not know if any of these synths are available on softwares such as Reason.

Hope the answer helps. ;-)

Wid."

MAX FOR LIVE (M4L) Class in NYC

via Daniel
"MAX FOR LIVE (M4L) FULL WEEK INTENSIVE
Mark Triant, Dafna Naphtali, Adam Rokhsar
Monday through Friday, March 15 - 19
10am to 6pm (40 hrs) - $1200 + $75 for membership

http://tinyurl.com/m4l-at-hw

Harvestworks in New York City offers a 40-hour crash course in Max for Live (M4L) - a new incarnation of Max/MSP that runs natively within Ableton Live, enabling users to design and share custom-made instruments, processors, and interfaces, with a level of integration beyond what third-party plugins are capable of. This full-week, 40-hour crash course is designed to help new M4L users dive into the construction of new devices to run within Live, including MIDI and audio processors, new instruments, and interfaces to Live's API which allow M4L patches to monitor and control application-wide behavior in real-time.

Max for Live combines the limitless customizability and open-ended creative process of Max/MSP with Live's robust, integrated production and performance environment, setting a standard of performance and versatility never yet seen in an audio workstation. The course is taught by our Ableton Live and M4L specialist Mark Triant, and veteran Max programmers Dafna Naphtali and Adam Rokhsar. The course is designed for beginners to Max/MSP, with or without experience in Ableton Live, who want a head-start with this software package. The course may be especially appealing to artists living outside of New York City who don't have the opportunity to learn Max for Live in their own hometown and who would enjoy a week in New York City.

The cost of the course is $1200, plus $75 for the annual Harvestworks membership that is required to take the course. The courses are Mondays through Fridays 10am to 6pm. Working in our computer lab after 6pm can also be arranged. Lecture demonstrations will alternate with practice time, and some of our Max-savvy interns can be available to assist during practice time. The course will provide lots of practice and sample patches. Students enrolled in Max/MSP/Jitter related classes at Harvestworks are eligible for Cycling 74's educational discount when purchasing the software. The course is limited to 10 students.

Prerequisites: Students have to use their laptops with all necessary software installed. Call us if you have problems.

We will not provide meals or snacks for the course, but can point to lots of cheap dining places in the neighborhood. We also cannot provide accommodations, but can help with posting requests or bringing you in contact with other artists who might be able to help.

In his interview on Cycling74's website, Hans Tammen gives a few insights into Max teaching at Harvestworks: http://www.cycling74.com/story/2008/9/15/113650/347

Harvestworks: From our central SoHo location in New York City, we bring together innovative practitioners from all branches of the digital arts, and provide a vital context and catalyst for creativity in the field. For the last thirty years we have offered artists on-site recording studios, programming services, workshops, classes and one-on-one tutorials in emerging technologies supporting the pioneers of computer music with equipment and instruction. As a tool for artists, Max has been a central part of the Harvestworks program for almost 20 years. We offer regularly scheduled year-round classes and workshops on a wide variety of topics relating to Max/MSP and Jitter; as well as our Certificate Program, a flexible course of one-on-one instruction."

The CS-5 is here for 2 reasons: (1) to demonstrate the trigger-out feature of the KR-55B, (2) to demonstrate the GR-1 effect on synth sounds. BTW, this CS-5 has some significant electronic music history attached to it, to be revealed by me in a future YouTube video... stay tuned!"
