vxxy Website Goes Live with DCM8 Details, Videos, Pics & Pre-Order

You might remember the vxxy DCM8 from this previous post. The DCM8 is a new chiptune drum machine from vxxy which features the following:

" 64 Patterns in 8 banks of 8.
Selectable 8, 16 or 32 steps per pattern with half, normal and double speed timing scales.
Adjustable instrument volume, decay and pitch on per step basis.
Dual channel architecture with wide range of retro and unique preset sounds generated by a scripted synthesis engine.
255 digitally synthesized chip sounds, consisting of 223 presets and 32 user generated patches.
8 Levels of live undo on each pattern.
8 Songs with 128 pattern selections.
Clear, Copy and Paste 8, 16 or 32 steps between patterns.
EEPROM based storage of all patterns and user data, with SYSEX backup.
MIDI input and output."

As for the sound source: "The oscillator has all traditional waveforms and a selection of 4bit wave tables, samples, generative algorithms and frequency modulation available. Noise source includes multiple different types of PRNG (pseudo random number generator) and wave formulations, and control is available over frequency, volume, and sweeping of those parameters. An LFO is also included which is routable to all parts of the synthesis engine, with selectable waveform, frequency, depth and re-triggering options..."
See http://vxxy.net for more info including the pre-order price. New videos below.

via otoskope who brought us the bugbrand and Palle Dahlstedt custom pencil interface videos here.
"In July I made a collaboration with traditional Japanese dancers and musicians, and this is one of the performances. The NoHo Theatre Company in Kyoto commissioned a piece, and I chose the title Northern Mirror, and composed it in my studio. In Kyoto, director Jonah Salz together with me and the performers created a story around my title, and then performed it at the beautiful Oe Noh-gakudo, one of Kyoto's oldest Noh Theatres.

The electronic pre-recorded part was made from alternate-playing piano sounds, and then processed in a Nord Modular G2, using evolutionary algorithms and custom gestural mappings to control the parameters of complex shuffling algorithms."

otoskope also let me know that the stages are sacred. You have to wear special socks placed in front of it and no electronic devices are allowed on stage. Speakers were discretely placed in front which made monitoring the acoustic musicians a challenge.

"Currently only 22 know to exist, worldwide.

Maestrovoxes were built in the United Kingdom by Victor Harold Ward in the 1950s. They were intended to be bolted under a piano. The pianist could play the piano with the left hand, the maestrovox with the right (and control its volume with his/her knee). The round buttons are an early form of preset. The 6 red buttons provide presets from a violin & trumpet to bagpipes & an arabian flute.

They belong to the family of tube based synth/organs... in the style of the Clavioline and Solovox.. the forerunners of todays' Synthesizer"

DKNG GLOW IN THE DARK MOOG Modular Art

via DKNG Studios

"It’s that time of year again. Moogfest 2011 is just around the corner and we were once again asked to create a print for this year’s group art show SYNTH, a showcase of hand made limited edition screen prints inspired by Bob Moog’s legacy.

Since last year’s print was such a success [see this post], we decided to create an all new giant Moog synthesizer, with the addition of some new bells and whistles. This year’s print is a 24″ x 18″ four color screen print and has a limited edition of 100. The graphics go full bleed, we created a DKNG moog parody logo, and to top it all off, it glows in the dark. The best part is the glow ink spells out the name MOOG which is composed of the buttons and knobs from the artwork.

The print will be available for purchase in our online store starting November 1st."

"Palle Dahlstedt is composer in Göteborg. Here is he doing the opening performance in the foyer at Atalante. He is using a new instrument dealing with electricity transported by the black lead sketched with an ordinary pencil.
VARIA is an international improvisation festival. It is arranged by Lisa Larsdotter Petersen who every year invites a broad variety of international artists to perform at Atalante."

Some additonal info via Muff's:

"For those who haven't seen this before, a short explanation: I create a 2D voltage field in the pencil marks on the paper with two movable electrodes. Then I tap various control voltages with other electrodes, which are fed into a large number of points in the bugbrand. All playing is done with these electrodes, which are made from stacks of old Swedish coins.

More is explained in this thread:

http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34536

In the front is one of the new shallow Bugbrand frames, the same I brought on the Japan tour a couple of weeks ago, but with some modules exchanged. For example, I managed to make the E350 shallow enough to fit.

This particular patch contains four separate sounding structures, and the electrodes that tap CV voltages from the pencil field are routed to all these at ones. That is, each electrode controls many parameters simultaneously. The sounding structures are routed separately to an external little mixer, and I sometimes change which structures are heard. Sometimes just one, sometimes two, in the end all four at the same time (but I'm not sure this is in the video).

The four sounding structures are:

* Two intermodulating (FM) saw oscillators into a wavefolder.
* PT Delay feedback loop through an SV Filter, gated by a looped env/LPG.
* Weevil rev.2 through a bandpass SV filter through looped env/LPG.
* E350 through something (don't remember, actually, possibly an LPG)."

Eowave .:.:DOMINO.::: shipping November, 1st

".:.:DOMINO.::: is a discrete analogue synthesizer with a VCO in the tradition of MS20 and TB303. The VCO, filter & VCA are transistor made. This transistor architecture gives .:.:DOMINO.::: a unique raw sound. Rich and raw at the same time, no need of external effects to give life to the sound. The VCO offers a mix between sawtooth and square. Pulsewidth can be modulated by the LFO. The filter is a classic moog ladder 24dB resonant filter. The analogue envelope range is from 1ms to 10s with attack, decay, sustain/release.The LFO has 8 different waveforms. On waveform 8, the modulation wheel can replace the LFO. MIDI CC 8 to 16 can transform the LFO in a sequencer to modulate pitch, pulsewidth, filter cutoff. The VCA can be modulated by a gate or by an envelope. In the legato mode, playing notes will generate glide between two notes. The glide time can be edited via MIDI CC. We've added a few more features like an accent recognition capability: all velocity values above 100 are recognized as an accent. Among these new features, an arpeggiator. With its small size and metal enclosure, .:.:DOMINO.::: will follow you everywhere!

"The Spectre is a self contained guitar synthesizer with circuitry that allows a guitar to control the Oberheim SEM inside. The guitar pickup for this one has long since disappeared, so I had the SEM patched out to use it as a desktop monosynth.

The patch points are: AUDIO OUT, AUDIO IN (through filter), LFO RESET (trig in), OSC CV IN, GATE IN, OSC 2 OUT, OSC1 CV IN, OSC2 CV IN, VCF CV IN. The patch points give you semi-modular control over the vintage SEM. It sounds fantastic. It is much rawer sounding than the new SEM."

Happy Halloween! via organfairy

YouTube Uploaded by organfairy on Oct 27, 2011

I was going to save this for Halloween, but Halloween is always too short in my opinion. I figured it's good start the vibe early. It's time to get that party started. :) Halloween posts will be interspersed. Be sure to see the Halloween label below for more. If you have anything for Halloween, send it in!

"Last year at Halloween someone suggested that I should do Warmarch of the priests by Felix Mendelssohn as a Halloween video. I had already done a Halloween video so I decided that it should wait untill this year. So here it is!

It is also used as the opening of my favourit movie "the Abominable dr. Phibes" so I thought it could be fun to do a little dress-up. I don't have a shiny black cape like the one Phibes is wearing but I did have a red poncho. And in the right light this might also look kind off spooky. I have also added a little "old-movie" FX to the video.

The version of the warmarch that I present here is one that I recorded as a MIDI file back in 2000 for a Phibes fan page. But it is the Yamaha organ that are playing. It doesn't sound exactly like the usual organ version because I couldn't find the original organ sheet music at the public library or online. I could only find a version transcribed for a brass band. So this is actually a piece of organ music transcribed for brass band and then played on a digital organ..."
