Tom Oberheim Chimes in on The First Synths to Have Patch Memory

Tom Oberheim's notes have been added to the post. It has also been cleaned up a bit. This should be it for now. If any significant updates come in, I will be sure to let you all know. Note the post was a bit of an accident, and if you follow the site, you pretty much got to see it in the making. It doesn't happen often but it's kind of interesting when it does. It started with a simple note on the PPG 1003 and grew from there. It is a fascinating bit of synth history, so be sure to check it out. And as always, feel free to comment in the post and/or send any to me directly via email. You'll find the email icon at the bottom right of the site. If you use a browser for email, right click the icon and grab the link there.

Update: I missed the Yamaha CS80! It was released in 1976 as well and it was polyphonic. It and the CS60 have been added to the post. Note their memory systems consisted of mini version of the front panel off on the top left complete with sliders. You'd create your patch there and select it via corresponding buttons on the front panel. The CS80 had six complete slider sets and the CS60 has two. You couldn't save edits made on the larger front panel. Also there's a "performance" row of sliders below the main parameter section on top. I don't believe these are represented in the mini preset sliders.

Granular synthesis works by combining many tiny grains of sound from an existing recording, generally creating new sounds with the textural properties of the original.

Granular synthesis allows you to regenerate the recording, playing it forward or backward at any speed, to skip around the recording playing tiny slices of it at random, or to loop a small portion with a varying loop size.

via this auction

" New in Box with Full Warranty and crafted from Walnut Wood at the Moog Headquarters!

Manufacturer Description:
Based on Leon Theremin's original designs--

The Theremin is one of the oldest electronic instruments, and the only one that you play without touching it. Moving your hands in the space around its antennas controls pitch and volume. Like the Ethervox, the Etherwave is an authentic adaptation of inventor Leon Theremin's original design. It's easy to carry and set up and fun to play.

The Etherwave is a quality Theremin with a design that retains many characteristics of the original theremins, including a five-octave pitch range and reliable spacing between notes for sophisticated playability. Antennas are nickel-plated 3/8" brass tube and cabinets are furniture-grade hardwood. The Etherwave is fitted with an adapter for mounting on a standard microphone stand and is designed for use with a musical instrument amplifier such as the Moog TB-15.

The Etherwave is shipped with a DVD that contains two video tutorials: Mastering the Theremin with Lydia Kavina, and Clara Rockmore, the World's Greatest Theremin Virtuosa.

Moog Etherwave Theremin Standard Features:

* Power Rocker Switch - switches on and off the AC power to Theremin.
* Audio Out - standard 1/4" phone jack, which delivers line level output to your amplifier.
* Pitch Rotary Control, for adjusting the response of the pitch antenna.
* Volume Rotary Control, for adjusting the response of the volume antenna.
* Waveform Rotary Control, for adjusting the waveform of the audio output.
* Brightness Rotary Control, for adjusting the brightness of the audio output."

Jupiter-80 Version 2.0 Software Update [Video with Deeper Editing]

YouTube Uploaded by DanKrisher on Mar 21, 2012

You'll see some of the deeper synth editing on the Jupiter-80 in this one. It comes in at 1:49.

"New additions include new modeled analog filters for Jupiter-8, Minimoog and Prophet 5. Effects chains can be configured either serial or parallel. New Version 2.0 sound-set. New boot-up screen for live performance and ACT integration with Sonar X1."

Update via Roland:

"Since the launch of the JUPITER-80, many professional keyboard players and producers have praised its expressive SuperNATURAL sounds and live-performance capability. With the Version 2 software update, the JUPITER-80 offers new features that enhance its already formidable synthesis power, and provides more flexibility and creativity for musicians designing their own sounds.

Adds three types of low-pass filters; combined with the previous type, a total of four filters are now available
Adds new MFX structures; in addition to the previous parallel connection, a total of five structures (including serial connection) are available
Adds a Registration Play screen for easier access to sounds during live performance
Better integration with SONAR software; a dedicated plug-in for your computer lets you easily map the JUPITER-80 to control SONAR’s faders and soft synths

The filter section is one the most important tool kits for editing SuperNATURAL synth tones. Version 2 adds three types of vintage low-pass filters to the lineup. With the addition of these filters, each with unique cutoff and resonance behaviors, you can faithfully recreate coveted synthesizer sounds of the past.
New MFX Structures

The previous MFX section allowed only parallel connection of the four effects for one Live Set, but with Version 2 you can select MFX structures that let you place up to four effects in series. By using these five MFX structures, you can take full advantage of the JUPITER-80’s powerful collection of effects to create intense electro-synth sounds and intricate ambient synth textures.
New Registration Play Screen

The new Registration Play screen provides easier access to your sounds during live performance. You can see all eight Registrations in a bank at a glance, and select them directly via the touch screen.
Improved SONAR Integration

The Version 2 update offers smoother integration with SONAR software. A dedicated plug-in for your computer lets you easily map the JUPITER-80 to control SONAR’s faders and soft synths."

KORG Expands microKEY Family of USB Powered Controllers

"MusikMESSE, Frankfurt, Germany, March 21, 2012 - Korg expands its microKEY USB Powered Keyboard and MIDI Controller family. The microKEY-37 is now joined by the highly portable microKEY-25 and the five-octave microKEY-61 for the studio musician. As an added bonus, the microKEY-61 comes with the exclusive Legacy Collection Suite - the acclaimed collection of software versions of some of Korg's most coveted synthesizers, including the iconic M1 Workstation, plus effects plug-ins - to add to musicians' sonic arsenals.

For budget-minded computer musicians seeking portability and power without sacrificing keyboard feel and function, the microKEY is an ideal way to create a compact and customized MIDI command center. Free editing software and a selection of included software bundle licenses and discount coupons make the microKEY even more cost effective.

For added flexibility and control, the microKEY 37- and 61-key models both serve double-duty as a USB hub. Two USB ports (Type A) allow users to expand their control center by adding on a Korg nanoPAD2, nanoKONTROL2 or any other USB device. The Mac and PC-compatible microKEYs also run on USB power, making them well-suited for on-the-go laptop musicians. For iPad musicians, the microKEY-25 can be used to control apps such as the Korg iMS-20 via MIDI (see korg.com for details).

All microKEY models feature velocity-sensing mini keys, using the same Natural Touch keybed found on the Korg microKORG XL and microSTATION. This keybed has been designed with careful attention to the touch and feel: the proportions of the black keys and white "waterfall" keys have been adjusted for optimal playability, with a key touch that makes it easy to play chords, glissandos and rapid-fire phrases. The microKEY also accurately conveys the dynamics of the user's performance to any software package.

Introding the New Tom Oberheim Two Voice Pro Synthesizer

via http://tomoberheim.com/

"People often ask me: 'Tom, what was the favorite one of your synthesizers from before?' And my answer is always: 'the Two Voice'!

I am introducing, for scheduled delivery in June 2012, the 'tom oberheim' Two Voice Pro Synthesizer. It is similar to the original from 1975, but with some very interesting upgrades.

Features:

Mini-Sequencer is enhanced - you still generate a sequence with the knobs ( up to 16 positions ) but you can store sequences from the knobs into flash memory (up to 99 sequences stored)

Updates to the Worlds First Programmable Synth Post

I made some updates to the post after hearing back from Dave Smith. It's only a post away below, but I wanted to make sure no one missed it, so I'm putting up this post to let you know. I also forwarded the link to Tom Oberheim. I'll post back if any updates come from him. Please note the post kind of happened by accident and usually you shoud do your research first. :) What happens in the blog world, and definitely my world, is you post something and new info comes in, so what started as something simple can grow fairly quickly. Fortunately this is not print and edits can be made. Fortunately there's nothing too dramatic here, just minor points of clarity.

The New Roland JUPITER-50 Synthesizer Overview

YouTube Uploaded by RolandChannel on Mar 19, 2012

"The JUPITER-50 is equipped with a sound engine that's the sonic equal of its big brother JUPITER-80, containing most of the SuperNATURAL acoustic and synthesizer tones found in the JUPITER-80. It also retains the same Live Set architecture, where four separate sound engines can be stacked together to create massive voices such as classic fat synth tones. Users can even import JUPITER-80 sound data into the JUPITER-50. In addition, powerful multi-effects and reverb are onboard for studio-quality sound processing."

"The JUPITER Legacy Continues with a Sleek New Performance Synth
features

With its unprecedented fusion of synthesis and acoustic instruments, the new-generation Roland JUPITER has changed the way we play, react to, and feel a keyboard. By combining the supreme expression of the JUPITER-80 with the travel friendliness of the JUNO series, the new JUPITER-50 brings SuperNATURAL sound and pro performance to every stage and studio.

SuperNATURAL Power

The JUPITER-50 houses over 1500 SuperNATURAL synthesizer tones found in the flagship JUPITER-80, plus all of its SuperNATURAL acoustic sounds (with Behavior Modeling) and many of its Live Sets. In fact, you can conveniently import the JUPITER-80's Live Sets into the JUPITER-50 via USB flash memory. To achieve the same supreme sound quality as the JUPITER-80, the JUPITER-50 employs the identical analog audio components as its big brother, including the high-resolution D/A converter.
Essential Sounds Onboard

The JUPITER-50 is packed with over 1,500 SuperNATURAL synthesizer tones, plus over 70 SuperNATURAL acoustic instruments, each with its own dedicated sound engine. Choose, stack and edit any combination of four tones to create custom Live Sets.

For live performers: there's a treasure trove of essential stage sounds packed into the JUPITER-50, anchored by our famous SuperNATURAL piano and electric pianos. Authentic organs are included as well, derived from our acclaimed VK organ sound engine, with a dedicated front-panel button that provides instant access to rotary effects.

For synth lovers: Choose from over 1,500 SuperNATURAL synthesizer tones and stack four of them to create a powerful Live Set. Classic synth sounds include analog favorites such as the Roland SH and JUPITER brass, plus digital sounds from the D-50, JD-800, and Fantom. Combine them with the SuperNATURAL acoustic instruments to create your own expressive, modern sounds.

For film composers: Expressive classical and ethnic instruments are at your immediate access for composition, from erhu, sitar, and flamenco guitar to timpani and oboe. Thanks to Behavior Modeling technology, the JUPITER-50 translates your keyboard performance into the unique musical nuances of each modeled instrument.

Easy Sound Creation

Complex sounds don’t have to be complicated to program. The JUPITER-50 simplifies the sound-design process with its color-coded front panel, fast-access buttons and sliders, and Registration/Live Set architecture (128 Registrations, 2,560 Live Sets) logically categorized and instantly available.
Travel-Friendly

Tipping the scales at just 11 kg (24 lbs. 5 oz.), the JUPITER-50 is one of the lightest professional instruments in its class, while still offering a top-quality 76-note weighted keyboard. With its powerhouse features, sounds, and travel-friendly design, the JUPITER-50 is a dream for gigging musicians on the go.
USB Functionality

The JUPITER-50's built-in audio recorder/player lets you capture musical sketches and full performances instantly to USB memory. By pre-loading a USB stick with WAV, AIFF, and/or MP3 files, you can use them as live backing tracks onstage and control them from the JUPITER-50. You can even simultaneously record your performances on the keyboard along with audio file playback from USB.
High-Performance Effects

The JUPITER-50 boasts an advanced effects engine that takes your sounds into another dimension. There are five types of pro-grade reverb algorithms onboard, plus dozens of other special effects (MFX). And we're only scratching the surface, as many other expressive performance tools are built into this powerful synth. You can select from five MFX structures that let you place up to four effects in parallel and/or serial paths; using these structures, you can take full advantage of the JUPITER-50’s powerful collection of effects to create intense electro-synth sounds, intricate ambient synth textures, and beyond."
