Oberheim Matrix-12 Demo

YouTube Uploaded by gstormelectro on Aug 2, 2011

This is sound demo of the Oberheim Matrix-12 synthesizer. All but two of the patches are my original creation and hopefully shows some of the ridiculously flexible sound architecture that is possible with this board. I'm playing some riffs both of my own original music and from some of the bands that have influenced me. The last bit, Intro to Gunslinger, while it is short it DID take a couple of weeks practice to get it right and is backed by a Machinedrum.

A summary of song riffs played:
G-Storm - Miranda (By The Sea)
Radiohead - All I Need
Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence
G-Storm - Cerulean Deraileur
Jimmy Van M ft. Terra Deva - bassline from Love Like Sleep
G-Storm - Spaced Out Beauty
New Order - Blue Monday
G-Storm - Aerial
808 State - breakdown from In Yer Face
Garbage - You Look So Fine
Sasha - Mr Tiddles
Go West - intro to Call Me
G-Storm - untitled track
G-Storm - Expectations (a really old unrecorded track of mine)
Spaced Out Beauty
M83 - You Appearing
Expectations
Immersion Domain - 1000 Images (I used the same Limuidz factory patch on the Xpander for that track)
Van Halen - I'll Wait (Eddie used an OB-Xa, I believe)
G-Storm - Descendant
Vangelis - Blade Runner (Opening Titles)
G-Storm - Gunslinger
G-Storm - intro to Gunslinger

Recorded via Alesis Multimix-8 and into Macbook w/ only occasional additional effects from the Multimix added for select sounds."

Francis Prève's Mattel Synsonics for Ableton

"In the pantheon of vintage analog drum machines, there's an unsung classic that isn't from a big name manufacturer like Roland or Korg, but from a toy company. Released in 1981, the Mattel Synsonics was an affordable black box that housed a fully analog kit consisting of kick, two toms, snare, cymbal and hi-hat - all playable via velocity sensitive pads."

You can find the live set on Francis Prève's site here. Be sure to see his Ableton Live label for previous sets.

Analogics Custom Sequential Circuits Pro-One

via this auction

"For sale is a very special Sequential Circuits Pro One. It has a new custom wood casing made by Analogics, including a blue illumination wheel mod and prophet 5 knob kit. The original knobs are also included. Mint condition and fully functional. Comes with original manual. The more sought after J-Wire version. Serviced last year and is fully operating at factory specs. New key bushings, calibrated, tuned, the works."

Sequential Circuits Pro-One synthesizer for sale

YouTube Uploaded by spaceboyjosh on Aug 2, 2011

"This is a demonstration of my Pro-One analog monophonic (one note at a time) synthesizer, for sale soon on eBay. I have replaced the key bushings, de-oxidized the j-wires, cleaned and lubricated the knobs and switches, and lifted a grounding wire that was causing some loud humming in the output. The result of my work is a synthesizer that is clean, reliable, and a blast to play.

First I demonstrate that all the keys work, then I play some Donna Summer on the sequencer and fool around with the oscillator sync and modulation section. This barely scratches the surface of what this synthesizer can do."

via the seller: "For quite a long time now I have been working on making replacement control panel overlays for various vintage guitar synthesizer controllers. First, I needed high resolution scans of the original overlays. Next was creating an appropriate file to reproduce the original graphics. And finally there was the issue of what materials and techniques to produce the overlay.

After trying various materials, this overlay is printed on high quality acetate. I used a professional sign shop for the printing, as they had the machines, materials, and experience with creating products designed to take abuse and still look good."

"Seeing if the 3VCO can be used effectively as a polyphonic device playing chords. It can if you use a MIDI-CV device that can send 0V on the unused channels when needed. This is because the second and third oscillator of the 3VCO can only be offset from the first oscillator, not individually controlled.

Oramics to Electronica Exhibit

Free Fri 29 Jul 2011 - Sat 01 Dec 2012 at the Science Museum, South Kensington, London.

"Electronic music is everywhere, from the television that we watch to the music we listen to in clubs and even the ringtones on our mobile phones. But who created these electronic sounds? And how did electronic music develop?

The Oramics Machine is a revolutionary music synthesiser that was created in the 1960s by Daphne Oram. Daphne had a strong passion for both sound and electronics and the vision to combine the two.

It is too fragile to restore to working order, but you can use our new interactive to recreate the sounds that it made.

In October 2011 more exhibits will be added to this core display that will be co-created by people who are working with electronic music today as well as a group of Daphne’s contemporaries.

They will tell the intriguing story of how electronic sound has advanced, changed and was democratised from the 1950s through to the modern era, and they will look at how people envisioned new sounds and pushed the boundaries of what was possible. They will explore how over the years musicians have invented, altered and improved (often cheap) equipment to be able to produce these dreamt-up electronic sounds. And finally they will show how the production of electronic music has moved from purpose-built laboratories to a music studio the size of a laptop.

Find out more on the Oramics Machine Facebook page.

Oramics to Electronica is part of the Public History Project, which aims to explore how visitors understand the history of science and to develop a new collaborative approach to developing exhibitions. This is a novel type of exhibition for the Science Museum, filled with objects that will fascinate enthusiasts, families and adults alike."

Hokusai Audio Editor for iOS Now Available - Free

You might remember Hokusai from this preview video.

"Hokusai is a multitrack audio editor for iPhone or iPad. Record or import a track, and make it sound the way you want it to: not just trimming the ends, but full cut, copy, paste and delete, and a suite of filters and special effects available.

Edit many tracks side-by-side, mix them together, and export to wave or mp4 format — then transfer them to your computer via USB or Dropbox, or send them to another app on your device.

Hokusai is streamlined to give you a clean, clear view of your tracks. Use the familiar pinch and swipe gestures to zoom right in and fiddle with fine detail, or step back to see the big picture. And just like selecting text in other apps, you can select pieces of audio. Live "scrubbing" means you can hear the sound under your fingertip as you make your adjustments. And you needn't fear a bad edit with our full undo/redo support: as many levels as space allows.

Hokusai comes free with a set of useful tools such as fade in/out, normalise volume levels, reverse time, and basic synthesis. If you need more power, you can upgrade from inside the app to add new tools and effects, including: AudioCopy/AudioPaste, grain synthesis, noise gating, time-stretching, pitch-bending, echo, reverb, modulation (AM & FM), resonance, distortion, grunge, vocal levelling, monster voice, high/low/band-pass/notch-cut filter and more."

"This is a sound programmed on the Oberheim OB-8 using the oscillator sync mode. I set each oscillator to the pulse wave, enabled sync, then modulated the frequency of the synched oscillator. This made a very rich sound and when I viewed it on the oscilloscope I saw these crazy animated castle walls going by. I used my Nexus One to shoot the screen then added in the recorded audio so you can properly hear how it sounds."

Mini Roland Jupiter 8 Synthesizer

via this auction
1/4 Size Model
"From the people who bring the JUNO-6 and JUNO-60’s into this decade with those black custom plastic side cheeks – we’ve got a one-off, non-functioning model created for another project we are now offering for sale. Who wouldn’t want their own Jupiter 8!

First, we’ve spend hundreds of hours of graphic design, taking measurements and building this “pocket version” to the truest heavy-hitter of analog synths – the Jupiter 8! This is an accurate model, down to the stainless steel screws into the beveled side panels, the acrylic display crystal, silver sides, rainbow of graphic buttons and rear panels of jacks and that huge red on/off switch. This actual unit is a prototype for a small series of full size units that are nearly complete (just in time for Roland’s introduction if the Jupiter 80 this month). This model is a solid 15 lbs. and is exactly 1/2 scale (which makes it one-quarter the size of the real thing). It is 21-7/8” wide, 10-1/4” deep and 3-1/4” high. It was produced from milled MDF, laminate, synthetic overlay and high quality paint coatings. While it doesn’t fool anyone into believing it’s real, it is a very attractive, very heavy and sturdy model and would look great in the personal studio that “has it all”, except for a JP-8."

Some more shots of the inside below.

"Though the serial # is missing form the back. I wrote it down way back when and I have to find it.

However, the first picture of the inerior when enlarged shows a board that says ARP P-2805-A Made in U.S.A.

Underneath that, etched into the board, it says 14 - 900. There is also a number inside on a component next to the fuse in one of the pictures that says 2804 - 008. I'd love it if this was the 8th one made, but I think that is a part number. I'd have remembered that number if it was on the paper. Any help here finding the actual serial# inside is helpful. The service manual is viewable on line but I don't understand it."
