RIP Nash the Slash

"Nash the Slash in concert in July 2008" via Wikipedia

This in via Lee Tizard

"Sad to hear that Nash the Slash passed on today, I really admired that guy, truly a groundbreaking, underrated Canadian electronic music artist.

I was privileged to see him perform live in Toronto in the early 80’s, he was in a circular mesh like cage in the middle of a disco, lit from below, he was playing:
Violin
His signature skull shaped Mandoblaster
A few tape machines
Numerous effects
A fuzz box
Korg MonoPoly
Roland CR78
And singing

Blew my mind, I’ll never forget the show, it was like something from a Si-Fi film.

[CBC News Obit]"

Update via Lee: "Here is a very good bit from the Toronto Global & Mail I just came across. He sued Pepsi- Cola for 'misappropriation of identity' after he's friends from a Canadian band called 'Rough Trade' called him and told him they just came from a Pepsi - Cola ad shoot and 'there was some guy there dressed up just like you.' He won the case, but didn't get any money!

There is also a outstanding brief interview of Nash talking about opening up for Elvis Costello at the legendary El Mocombo bar in Toronto and tells a funny story of getting kicked out of this own gig, at the end he says 'and that's Rock & Roll'"

The following are a few videos to give you a taste of Nash the Slash's work including an interview with Gary Numan. Be sure to check each out as the style of each is different. Nash the Slash had an eclectic range of electronic music.

"Purchased new, original owner. Analogue Solutions Red Square semi modular, patchable synthesizer. This is the newest Version 3 model. 2 VCOs, VCF, Midi to CV, LFO, 1/4 inch jacks. I used this very rarely. It has been in a smoke and pet free studio. It works great. Includes power cord and manual. Does not include patch cables.

This is a big, heavy item and so shipping overseas will be expensive. Be sure to figure shipping cost before you bid. Plan on 14 pounds (6.5kg) and a box 24 x 16 x 16 inches (61 x 41 x 41 cm)

"A classic vintage analog synth from 1984, the Sequential Circuits Six-Trak. The cheapest way to get the true analog Sequential / Prophet sound for less than a thousand bucks. Capable of excellent analog sounds in poly mode, and of mega-powerful bass / leads in unison / stack mode."

Studio Electronics SE-1 Synthesizer SN 2667

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The SE-1 is an analog, monophonic synth-module designed to re-create that classic Moog sound perfect for Hip Hop, R&B and Dance music. The classic Moog sound comes from its distinctive 24 dB lowpass voltage controlled analog filter. There is also a 12 dB low-/band-pass filter which emulates the classic sounds of Oberheim synthesizers.

The SE-1 uses three discrete voltage controlled analog oscillators for genuine analog synth sounds. And that's three VCO's, just like the Minimoog. They offer the basic waveforms you would expect from any analog: triangle, sawtooth, reverse sawtooth, square, noise, and random. There are also 4 multi-stage ADSR envelope generators used to shape your sound, the filter and more. Also available are Ring Modulation and Glide/Auto-Glide effects.

With 24 knobs, 21 tactile switches, MIDI control over parameters and plenty of program storage memory (396 presets and 396 user patches), the SE-1 is a professional alternative to its classic forefathers. It is used by Fatboy Slim, Frontline Assembly, Dr. Dre, and Astral Projection.

I love the sound of this unit. The Moog Ladder Filter sounds just like a Mini-Moog. The 12db/Oct "SEM" like filter is great when you need more high end content in the sound. It's got everything the Mini-Moog has and more - Ring Modulator, Sample & Hold, Velocity, 4 envelopes, more modulation options, two filters, etc.

Note: this unit is in perfect working condition with one exception. Occasionally, the display will go "random". This does not affect the sound. It does not affect the function. It does affect the interaction with the menu navigation, because the information in the display is non-nonsensical."

"The Eurorack Noise Swash is a chaotic random noise-maker and CV generator, generating its own sounds or working as an audio processor. As a stand-alone device it generates unpredictable continuously morphing oscillations on the Audio Output jack, and random CV fluctuations out the dual-direction "Mood CV" jack. A second CV input jack controls the Swash and Noisegate sections with positive and negative CV voltage. An audio input jack allows for distorting an audio signal beyond recognition, or using audio to trigger and modulate the chaos. The Swash knob is a 10-turn Bournes pot for adjusting minor variations. Each Swash has its own peculiarly unique sound."

This is a complete project I created using SONAR X2 and several instances of Wusik 4000 plus some drum loops. The first set of drum sounds are from Wusik 4000.

A total of 14 x Wusik 4000 Instances, 6 x Audio Tracks (for Drum Loops and Vocals) all running on a simple 1.8Ghz Celeron Dual Core. Project CPU usage peaks at 60%. But I had to freeze 3 tracks that had very complex presets on (multi-layers).

"I composed Inarmonique 1 as a first study on spectral composition using sine wave interference patterns, aka Jean-Claude Risset's harmonic arpeggio. I have written previously on this topic here.
The particular approach of the piece is to use "spectral scans", that involve the beating effect, of inharmonic partials.

To get the result I implemented the famous Risset instrument in chucK, wich, compared to csound, in my opinion allows for greater freedom of instrument design and parameter setting, given its OOP nature..."

EWI & Modular Big Band - Here In A Smokey Room

Published on May 12, 2014 DivKidMusic·22 videos

"After working with David Hogan on various other projects and talking modular we new straight away that with the recent arrival of an EWI (Akai Electronic Wind Instrument) into David's set up we had to get the modular synth hooked up.

This is the first in a series of videos using the midi out from the EWI into our eurorack modular set up. Using the standard pitch and gate information as well as volume and breath control from the EWI we've managed to created some highly playable and expressive patches. We quickly created some modular drum hits and created a back drop before multi-layering all the parts in Cubase. Very little mixing and no FX. Just modular and EWI.

The first track is Here In A Smokey Room, arranged by D. Hogan.

As always feel free to ask questions and leave a comment."

"Insane delay , looper , modulation processor that can do everything from tank like reverbs and flanger / chorus effects to see sick delay lines .It can also freeze the input and totally glitch stuff out if you want it to ( listen to my demo linked below )

Really these things are rare and really really cool if your into strange delays and effects.

In terms of sound its a very clean and quite analogue sounding digital delay that can go into long tape loop style processes or short flange and metallic verb effects , It has an lfo and so can also do pitch modulation effects , wow and flutter, mad seasick sounds and picth trills and stuff. It has a freeze / looper that further adds to the mayhem but it can do some lovely subtle picth modulated delays at the most basic level and ping pong repeats and stuff like this and its really a cool device."

Yamaha " Mariachi & Norteno" Expansion Pack on PSR-S650

Published on Apr 24, 2014 yamahacorporation·1,971 videos

"Yamaha releases the new Mariachi, Norteno & TexMex pack, expanding on the success of the Banda Pack released last year. This pack contains 3 different categories of musical genres: the Mariachi with real Vihuela, Guitarron, Mariachi Trumpets and more; the Norteno with the accordions and Bajo Sexto that provide that iconic Norteno sound; and the TexMex that is influenced by the Norteno, but uses more contemporary instrumentation, a little more sophisticated harmony and syncopated drums. The new samples featured in this pack are used to build a variety of Mega Voices, used for programming the Styles and to make playable Voices
for the performer to solo with. Also included in this pack is a number of Gritos (calls) and Chifidos (whistles), providing a high level of authenticity."

And the press release:

"Yamaha’s New Mariachi and Norteño Expansion Pack Offers Authentic South of the Border Voices and Styles

BUENA PARK, Calif. (May 6, 2014)—Yamaha’s Keyboard Division today introduced the Mariachi and Norteño Voice and Style expansion pack for its PSR-S650 keyboard, enabling musicians to play songs in these popular musical genres more authentically. The musical tools for playing TexMex, a genre that is influenced by Norteño but with more contemporary instrumentation, are also included. The package is now available as a free download through September 30, 2014 with the purchase of a Yamaha PSR-S650 arranger workstation keyboard.
Following on the success of the popular Banda expansion pack released by Yamaha last year, this new offering was enthusiastically received by performers of all skill levels during demonstrations at the 2014 NAMM show held in Anaheim, California this January.
“Like Banda, Mariachi and Norteño music continue to grow in popularity not only in Mexico, but throughout the U.S. and in the Mexican-American community and around the world and across diverse cultures,” said Mark Anderson, director of marketing, Keyboard Division, Yamaha Corporation of America. “We see great potential in our latest expansion pack that puts new instrument Voices and Style sections along with other authentic touches that enable any musician to fully explore these vibrant folk music styles.”

The Mariachi and Norteño Voice and Style expansion pack provides wide access to the signature sounds that make these genres come alive:
Mariachi: Real Vihuela, Guitarron, Mariachi trumpets and more;
Norteño: Accordions and Bajo Sexto;
TexMex: Sophisticated harmonies and syncopated drums

The expansion pack adds yet another layer of authenticity and fun to these Mexican musical forms with a varied selection of Gritos, the fun, vocal exclamations, and Chifidos (or whistles) that add energy and flavor to the music.
The new samples featured in this pack can be integrated into a variety of Mega Voices that can be used for programming Styles and creating playable Voices for performers to use in solos.

Ghost in the Machine - Modular Patch from ka010 on Vimeo.

"Self sequencing modular patch built around a prototype which goes by the name of -Darwin- and is best described as a evolving trigger sequencer.

Darwin is triggering the main sequence which is coming from a Braids oscillator (CSAW) which is then fed through one filter of the Korgasmatron a Spring Reverb and Echophon.

Bass is coming from a STO which is fed through the second filter of the Korgasmatron.

Pitch is controlled two Pressure Points and a uScale which is shifted whenever Darwin's sequence is changing.

A third Pressure Points is used for muting channels on the Mutamix.

Drums were quickly put together using a bunch of Doepfer filters and a noise source."

"new project synth development board. 9V battery or wall powered. +&-5VDC power supply. 3 input mixer, amplifier and on board speaker. Modular hardware board. I bought the scope from a company called gabotronics."

Update: some info via Casper Electronics:

"About the OMSynth Mini Lab.
The Open Modular Synthesizer is a format of electronic musical instrument that embodies the ethos and technical methodology of modular synthesis but is designed specifically for inventors.
One way this is achieved is by encouraging invention to start at the breadboard level. From here circuits can be built up to robust, road ready instruments. By starting at the breadboard circuits are cheap and flexible and the inventor is free to quickly build and change designs without fighting against a high level form factor.

FEATURES:
3 channel audio mixer
1 Watt audio amplifier and built in speaker and ¼” audio output jack
5 modular potentiometers
3 modular DPDT latching pushbuttons
Circuit prototyping area

POWER
The power regulator section of the Miniab provides a + & – 5VDC power supply from a single 9 volt battery or wall supply. This power supply level allows for classic analog designs, logic circuits and modern microprocessors to operate on the same voltage. The primary goal is to allow the integration of analog and binary chips such as operational amplifiers and CMOS logic chips.

SOUND
A small amp and speaker are provided that is primarily intended for prototyping purposes but is plenty loud enough for personal use. An unamplified signal is available from a 1/4″ audio jack. Plugging into this jack deactivates the amplifier.

HARDWARE
The hardware bored provides 5 potentiometers and 3 latching pushbuttons. This board can be broken off of the power board and placed below the breadboard..."

Electribe Jam and Demo with Volca Keys and Monotribe

"This is my 'new' Korg Electribe ESX-1
This is an original track, one take and live play.
I will try to demo some of the features.

I was thinking about adding another drum machine to my setup to chain different performances together. I was considering the Volca Beats but wasn't sure it would completely satisfy my needs. Since I'm not very good at selling stuff I don't use - I try to make puchases I won't regret.
I have heard alot of you guys - my fellow YouTubers - make GREAT music and beats with the Volca Beats - so I went to the online second hand market to look for one. But the second hand prices are still too close to the original price.
Then I started to look at the old Electribe S1 (ES1) Which is a rhythm sampler. Suddenly I stumbled upon this Electribe ESX-1 - and I didn't have to consider for long before I made the seller a bid that he accepted. Like the ES1 the ESX-1 is a sampler so I can sample or import any drum sound that I like and therefore can make whatever I want of this amazing machine!

I have been wanting an ESX ever since I saw Denkitribe play it in some of his videos.

I would like to dedicate this video to my wonderful wife who supports my crazy synth music endeavour with love and understanding :')

I hope you enjoy!"
