"It is in superb shape for it's age and has none of the issues commonly found on ailing/unkempt P6s; the CPU board has a replacement coin battery holder with no leak prior battery leak damage. All the voices sound vibrant and full. This synth also has a CHD MIDI kit installed for playing the Polysix from an outside MIDI source (Ableton, external sequencer, etc). All of the keys trigger fine."

Published on Apr 16, 2018 tritonrecordings

"A Casio that isn't a toy! These use a very similar sound engine to the Yamaha DX7. It's a bit easier to figure out than the DX7, and the built-in chorus really helps the sound come to life. I always run my DX7 through chorus, I always wondered why Yamaha didn't build one in. I wouldn't say this replaces a DX7 but try one out if you come across one in a shop - some people have really pushed these things to make incredible sounds."

YM3812 Stand Alone Frimware Update

For those unfamiliar this module is similar in function to the Yamaha PSS-570 keyboard it lets you control all the sound making

parameters individually. With 22 saves available for sound profiles.

I have added a few new features to the firmware, so its time for an update video. First new feature, pitch bend wheel. Second new feature, sustain function, works with the pedal input on your keyboard. Third, saved configurations can be loaded with a Control change command. finally, velocity control, which can be enabled and disabled on the unit, or with control change sixty nine. This allows for playing notes soft or loud."

Dave Smith Instruments In The Spotlight With the Tempest and Martin Steer – Bad Stream

You can find the full interview on DSI's website here.

"Having grown up with and on the internet, Berlin native Martin Steer has transformed its pull into a concept album that is just as immediate and intangible as the digital world. Bad Stream is guitars and machines vanishing in the spaces between Radiohead, Moderat and Nine Inch Nails only to reemerge as Techno, Noise, and Drone. Bad Stream, then, is his modus operandi, a soundtrack to the feelings of resignation, isolation, and cynicism within neoliberal cyberspace and to that strangely numbing comfort of bodies transmuting into zeros and ones in real time. The album is available on Martin’s own ANTIME Records.

We chatted with Martin about how he’s using the Tempest."

1980s Moog Source Vintage Analog Synthesizer SN 3401 w/ Extras

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Up for sale, a 1980's Moog Source vintage analog synthesizer in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Complete with a brand new secondary membrane control panel, LeCover dust cover, additional padded cover, and original manual, this vintage synth is a well-kept example of Moog's first programmable model. With additional MIDI upgrades, the flexibility of this keyboard is greatly increased, and the two classic MiniMoog analog oscillators and 24 dB filter sound incredibly fat and rich.

Moog's Source was their first to offer patch memory storage, with 16 memory locations to instantly recall your synth patches. A cassette-tape jack was also implemented to transfer your patches to and from an external tape and free up the on-board memory for additional new patches. Unlike previous Moog models, all parameters are controlled by a single data wheel. Just select your desired patch or parameter on the membrane pad and use the wheel to assign a value from 1-100. Straightforward and easy to use, the Source allows for a variety of distinct Moog sounds to be selected on the fly and additional tweaking can be done in real time too."

The Viking, VK-1 Synthesizer - Virtual RME Voyager Based Soft Synth

Published on Dec 10, 2017 Blamsoft

Clearly based on the Moog Voyager RME. The following are a few user videos from Zombie Fights Shark. Details below.

Published on Apr 16, 2018 Zombie Fights Shark

"In episode 2 of Too Many Plug-Ins we explore the Viking VK-1 Synthesizer from Blamsoft. The monophonic VK-1 is modeled after an actual synth and is offered as a Pay What You Want (PWYW) product on Blamsoft's site (http://blamsoft.com/vst/vk-1-viking-s...).

In part 1 we listen an example piece of music created using only the VK-1 and then learn how to make a simple drum kit (kick, snare, hi hats). In part 2 we see how to make chords using this monophonic instrument (without adding extra instances). In part 3 we explore the remainder of the knobs and switches to get a more thorough understanding of how the Viking works.

You can download a free supplemental bundle of presets for the Viking VK-1 via ZombieFightsShark.com or directly from Gumroad (https://gum.co/fsRZy).

Zombie Fights Shark creates original instruments and sound libraries for Propellerheads Reason, Ableton Live, Native Instruments Kontakt, and wave and loop files. Hear and see more at ZombieFightsShark.com"

"VK-1 Viking Synthesizer is an authentic emulation of a classic monophonic analog synthesizer. It has three continuously variable wave oscillators, two ladder filters with a Dual Lowpass or Highpass/Lowpass configuration, a multi-wave LFO, and two modulation busses. VK-1 uses state of the art DSP technology to accurately reproduce the sound of the hardware.

Presets
VK-1 comes with 228 presets in the categories Bass, Bright Lead, Electro Bass, FX, Percussive Lead, Soft Lead, and Synthwave. The 50 Electro Bass and 50 Synthwave presets were created by experienced sound designer eXode. The synth excels at thick bass and rich lead sounds.

Oscillators
At the heart of VK-1 are three adjustable wave oscillators. The continuously variable waveform knob gives the oscillators a unique sound that can’t be achieved with the fixed waveforms found in most synths. A noise oscillator provides three types of noise.

Modulation
Two modulation busses and an LFO provide flexible modulation capabilities.

Filter
The filter is a classic transistor ladder filter modeled meticulously. Different drive modes are available for adding grit. The number of poles is adjustable for a wider range of filter sounds.

Modular Synthesizers with Andrew Scheps

Published on Apr 16, 2018 pureMix

Eurorack keeps on growing... It's now mainstream. I would say a tipping point was back in 2014 when Sweetwater started carrying Pittsburgh modular, and then in 2015 when Roland introduced their Aira eurorack modules followed by the System 500, and SYR-E84 eurorack case.

"Dive into the world of Modular Synthesis with Andrew Scheps.

Modular Synthesizers are not only a sight to behold but fascinating instruments capable of producing unique sounds that people have never heard before.

In this tutorial, Andrew demonstrates how to:

Build a simple synthesizer
Use control voltages and audio to shape patches
Use an oscillator as a clock
Build a theremin
Create a droning patch"

10 creative ways to use LFOs (Synth tips and tricks)

Published on Apr 16, 2018 loopop

"I recently received for review the VariFO, a new and relatively cheap quad LFO module from VoicAs (http://voicas.audio) - a new eurorack company. With so many LFOs on tap, it inspired me to put together a clip with beginner as well as more advanced and creative LFO uses.

In this clip I explain what an LFO is, demonstrate how its basic parameters work (depth, rate, shape), and show ten different things you can do with LFOs:

1. Tremolo
2. Vibrato
3. FM synthesis
4. A Wobble effect with two LFOs
5. How an LFO can also be used as a clock or trigger in a modular setup
6. Using an LFO to sequence beats
7. Random sequencing with LFOs
8. How to use an LFO as an arpeggiator
9. How to create new LFO shapes
10. How to use an LFO as a sequence-synced timed VCA gate.

Used in this clip alongside VariFO are the Arturia Minibrute 2S, Disting MK4 from Expert Sleepers, and Plaits from Mutable Instruments"

Boss DR-202 "Simmons" Toms in Synthwave

Published on Apr 16, 2018 tiergrinder

"Here is a small quick demo that I made using a DR-202 for the electronic tom sounds for a synthwave track.

This is a response to a question that I got on my Enter The Fury video, where I was asked does the DR-202 really do the toms?
On that track the 202 does the sequencing for the intro synth line, but I replied that DR-202 is capable for nice "Simmons" tom sounds too and promised to make a quick demo.

I programmed the same tom patterns in the DR-202's internal sequencer and tuned the preset toms to match the tuning that I have on my "go to" Simmons samples. I wanted DR-202 to do all the drums so I programmed simple kick, snare, hihat and ride patterns to drive the track. Nothing too spectacular because the toms were the main point.

I recorded DR-202 dry without any external FX or EQ. When I recorded the drums, only instrument that was playing was the 202. I counted the bars and made the simple variations and break for the "track". Other parts were later added around this dry drum track.
For that reason the break is bit odd because I left the snare un muted and it pounds away through the break :D
That is also the reason why the drum sound volumes are bit all over the place.

Normally I would multitrack record every part on their own track, but here I just recorded all the drums from main outs as a mono mix to keep things honest, so there is no going back for level adjusting.

Sorry that I got carried away with the flanger, but you know.. It's so easy to end up over tweaking and forget what you were actually doing :D"
