New Evaton Technologies Link - Eurorack HDMI CV Module & Sneak Peak of Upcoming "Sonar" Module

Evaton Link Module 2-up Jam w/Morgantics Published on Apr 19, 2018 Russ Hoffman

"Morgantics stopped by to jam out on a pair of synths connected together with the new Link module coming soon from Evaton Technologies."

via Evaton Technologies:

"Link is a 4HP Eurorack synth module that enables connecting up to 18 CV/audio signals between two Eurorack cases over a single standard HDMI cable. Link is a 100% passive module, and allows signals to travel in either direction.

10 mono jacks and 14 stereo jacks combine into a single HDMI connection to another Link module in either a second Eurorack case, or simply to another place in the same case, for convenience.

The top 4 jacks are stereo, but those can each be broken out into two mono signals with an optional breakout cable, enabling up to 18 CV/audio signals to be easily connected to another synth, in just 4HP of front panel space.

Above is a quick video showing how the Link module can be used to allow a friend to stop by and you can hook your Eurorack synths together for a fun night of jamming! (There's also a sneak peek at the upcoming Evaton Technologies "Sonar" module in the video, too...)

A 5U version is also planned, which will allow easy connection between 5U and Eurorack systems, as well as within a large 5U system.

Link will be available Summer of 2018, and a pre-production prototype will be on display at Superbooth 2018.

http://www.evatontechnologies.com/link

Sonar, a module which generates CV and clocks based on ultrasonic rangefinding measurements, will be available later this year, and will also be on display as a prototype at Superbooth18. Sonar is still in development; look for an official announcement with full list of features soon."

Perfect Circuit Systems: East Coast Series

Published on Apr 19, 2018 Perfect Circuit Audio

"Perfect Circuit’s East Coast series of Eurorack systems pays tribute to the early history of analog synthesizers via the lush analog tones of 'East Coast' synthesis. Based in methods developed by Dr. Robert 'Bob' Moog, the East Coast sound was popularized by such artists as Donna Summer, Herbie Hancock, Wendy Carlos, Giorgio Moroder, Tangerine Dream and more.

Full of beefy oscillators and colorful filters, our five East Coast series instruments are ideal for musicians looking to explore modular synthesis through the lens of classic analog sound design with sequencing and keyboard control. Assembled at a variety of pricepoints, these synths are ready to find a home in any studio.

Check out the link below for more information on our East Coast and West Coast series systems, and keep your eyes peeled for more in the near future!

You can find some videos featuring the YMF262 in the archives.

"The Yamaha YMF262, also known as the OPL3 (OPL is an Acronym for FM Operator Type-L), is an Frequency modulation synthesis Sound chip released by Yamaha Corporation in 1988. It is an improved version of the Yamaha YM3812 (OPL2). It was used in a number IBM PC soundcards including Sound Blaster 16 and Pro AudioSpectrum (16bit). It adds the following features:

The YMF262 improved upon the feature-set of the YM3812, adding the following features:[1]

twice as many channels (18 instead of 9)
simple stereo (hard left, center or hard right)
4 channel sound output
4 new waveforms (alternating-sine, "camel"-sine, square and logarithmic sawtooth)
4 oscillator mode, pairing 2 channels together to create up to six 4 oscillator FM voices
reduced latency for host-register access (the OPL2 had much longer I/O access delays)
subtle differences in the sine-wave lookup table and envelope generator to YM3812 (e.g. the modulator waveform on YM3812 is delayed by one sample, whereas both carrier and modulator waveforms on OPL3 are properly synchronized)[2]
YMF262 also removed support for the little-used CSM mode, featured on YM3812 and YM3526.[2]

The YMF262's FM synthesis mode is configurable in different ways:[1]

Its basic mode provides 18 two-operator FM channels.

One setting, common to the OPL line, converts 3 of the FM channels into a 5-channel percussion set.

Another setting, introduced with this chip, causes 12 of the channels to be paired up into six four-operator channels. This trades in polyphony for more complex sound formation.

The two settings can be used separately or in conjunction, resulting in four total modes:

18 2-operator channels
15 2-operator channels + 5 drum channels (drum setting on)
6 2-operator channels + 6 4-operator channels (4-op setting on)
3 2-operator channels + 6 4-operator channels + 5 drum channels (both settings on)
Like its predecessor, the OPL3 outputs audio in digital-I/O form, requiring an external DAC chip like the YAC512."

Vermona Mono Lancet 15 -Demo Sound with Beat

Published on Apr 19, 2018 Dziam Bass

"Classic monophonic synthesizer for lead- bass and effect-sounds.

Mono Lancet ’15 might be small-sized device, despite it is a bona fide analogue synthesizer.
Two oscillators and a noise generator are the foundation for its sound. Together with the musical lowpass filter and VCA it’s capable of producing warm and precious sounds full of character.

Beside its audio qualities Mono Lancet ’15 has a dead simple and intuitive user interface. Each parameter has its own control."

Jean-Michel Jarre at The Paramount Theatre Seattle

Jean-Michel Jarre at The Paramount Theatre

Above you'll find a photo stream of some pics I took at the Jean-Michel Jarre concert last night at The Paramount Theatre in Seattle (mouse over the image and use the controls on the left and right to flip through). Apologies for the quality of the pics as I only had my iPhone at the show. I was there to enjoy it, not to document it. That said, I of course couldn't help but take some pics and video. I still need to review the videos, so they may come in follow-up posts if they do JMJ's fantastic performance justice - see this post for a couple of videos from the San Jose concert for now - there are others on YouTube as well. I will say the concert was an absolutely incredible experience. If you ever get a chance to see Jean-Michel Jarre perform live DO NOT miss him. P.S. There are still two dates left for the tour in Southern California, Coachella tonight in Indio, and the Spreckels Theater in San Diego. Seriously, if you can make either, just go. The majority of the light show was all lasers and LED panels that moved across the entire stage. The effect was 3-dimensional. Jean-Michel frequently spoke to the audience and gave insight and background to many of the classic and new tracks they performed. I was fortunate enough to have Stephane Gervais, who performs with JMJ, invite me to the show. I was able to meet one of my personal heroes, an incredible influence on my life, early years, and now as an adult. I literally have Jean-Michel Jarre to thank for getting me into synths. It either was that or drums! :) Drums were not an option where I lived and I loved listening to Rendez-Vous when I was just 16. I ended up purchasing an Oberheim Matrix-6, brand new, and the rest his history. Thank you to Stephane and Jean-Michel for being such incredible people. Your music makes the world so much better.

P.P.S. Some synth spotting included Roland gear, an EMS SYNTHI, MacBeth Elements, ARP 2600 MKIII Orange and Black, and a GRP system.

Update: videos added below. These were taken with the iPhone so not the best; per above I was there to enjoy the show not capture it. I zoomed in while filming so the set in person was about 4x larger that what it looks like in these videos. I did see it all in person. The ceiling you see above is actually the underside of the second floor balcony seating. It was truly amazing to see, and it sounded pristine. The iPhone just isn't capable of capturing it unfortunately. Regardless, these videos should give you a sense of what it was like to be there.

Pure Nord Lead 4 - Custom Presets from Aiyn Zahev Sounds

"Available on https://www.aiynzahev-sounds.com/coll...

'Pure' provides a lush and full sound all the way through. The bank contains 99 presets and 25 performances, including huge pads, silky strings, brooding atmospheres, deep basses and rich plucks and leads.

The influence of electronic dance music runs through the bank, so just about all sounds will easily fit that context, but no since genre dominates, allowing "Pure" to cater to a wide variety of styles. These patches are designed to inspire.

Some of the performance patches are combinations of different sounds chosen to compliment each other, while others are programmed to behave just like individual sounds, but of course with the added benefit of more oscillators, filters and routing, resulting in a richer tone than could be achieved with individual sound slots.

35 MIDI files are included provide musical inspiration and examples of context, you can hear these in the demo.

Moon Modular Introduces the 501D Dual Voltage Controlled Oscillator 5U Module

via The Lunar Experience

"This module combines two VOLTAGE CONTROLLED OSCILLATOR circuits in one double-width unit. The two oscillator halves enter a symbiosis in that they share some controls which affect both while other functions are individual to each oscillator. Each oscillator has its own octave range switch (32’...2’ plus low frequency and wide settings, ‘wide’ augmenting the range of the tune pots to the whole ten octave span of the oscillators).

The master tune control on the left side affects both vcos while the corresponding pot on the right controls the detune interval beween vco 1 and 2. Bipolar attenuators for frequency and pulse width modulation with their corresponding input jacks are separate as are the two pulse width controls.

The central waveform selector controls both wave outputs 1 and 2 while three additional output jacks provide sine, sawtooth and pulse waves of oscillator 2; the output area is completed by a white noise source. More individual wave outputs can be obtained by adding the 501E expander module. The seven control voltage inputs allow control of fre- quency modulation and pulse width modulation of vco 1 and 2. Two more jacks control frequency (1V/oct) while the central cv input jack controls both oscillators at once."

"This is the venerated Polivoks, by Formanta. The USSR’s foray into the world of the Minimoog, this synth is fairly well known for its insanely good bass sounds, and amazing filter. The filter gets all of the praise here, and for good reason.

This particular synth is in good shape. It works as it should. It is definitely finicky, and needs warmup, as most vintage synths do. Sometimes it goes a little nuts, until it gets warmed up. That of course can be fun... occasionally one key in the lowest octave sticks physically, but if you shift the case slightly, it remedies. There is no top part to the case, but that’s how I bought it years ago.

You’ll need a step down transformer, as this runs at 220V. Comes with the power cable. Again, you’ll need the transformer to use it properly on 110/120V power."

"The J150 is a brand new original panel design for the synthesizers.com q150 Transistor Ladder Filter, paying homage to the origins of the Moog low pass filter design that the q150 is based on, and the original home of R.A. Moog in Trumansburg, New York. This new panel design saves valuable space in your modular synthesizer, and makes minimal sacrifices to do so. The only features omitted are the signal attenuators for the audio inputs, and the unipolar CV input for frequency, while maintaining classic Mu format ergonomics. Assembly of new panel requires only a screwdriver, and a few sockets. No soldiering, plug and play, and the modification is completely reversible.

Includes 1 panel, and 3 knobs (one large, two small), a replacement switch and a new set of standard PCB standoffs, to replace the non-standard ones that come on the q150. The J150 configuration is still compatible in slanted walnut and Box11 cabinets.

These are in stock and ready to ship. Please allow 3-4 days for processing time prior to shipment.

We recently visited Django Django’s north London studio to set the band the challenge of making a track in 10 minutes as part of our Against The Clock series. While we were there, one instrument caught our eye: keyboard player Tommy Grace’s rare Yamaha organ.

Made in 1977, the Yamaha D85 Electone was the GarageBand of its day, featuring three keyboards and an auto-accompaniment section that plays simple rhythms, allowing you to play a whole orchestra from one instrument.

In the video above, Grace shows us how it works and tells us how cheap and easy they are to get your hands on – as long as you have a van to transport it."

BEHRINGER MODEL D REVIEW and 15-minute manual

"The Behringer Model D is an homage (or clone, depending on your point of view...) to the classic and legendary Minimoog Model D.

Behringer's main achievement, aside from creating a faithful and great sounding synth, is pricing it at $300. In this video I review some of the "cons" of this synth, and the many "pros" that make it a very enjoyable synthesizer, including three oscillators, a classic ladder filter, 5 modulation sources, two envelopes, two LFOs and a small but capable set of patch points.
