Three Small Synths, One Small Show

Published on Sep 6, 2018 Aidan Burns-Fulkerson

"Who better than the Kastle v1.5 to help the Monotron Delay show off its talents? This short show is meant to detail the capabilities of the Delay to mangle incoming audio. This Monotron has two modifications. There’s an emergency stop button for when the echoes echoes echoes get out of hand, and there’s a toggle switch to connect the LFO to the delay time. Things can get crazy when resonant frequencies are reached.

Oh yeh, and the PO-33 K.O! is at the end of the audio chain."

Matrixbrute/Medieval Chant (Intonent Hodie)

Published on Sep 6, 2018 Kris Lennox

Follow-up to Matrixbrute: Arpeggiator + Gregorian Chant

"After last night's demo, I had a listen to a few Medieval vocal works. One stood out - it is called 'Intonent Hodie'. Very rhythmical. Vocals here spliced from the recording by Anonymous 4. The work itself is pure Dorian, but in my head I could hear it completely differently, with lots of underlying modulations. The change to C Lydian is great. Time signatures etc also aren't of the original version. I also doubled a vocal line on each verse. I think it sounds more natural this way.

I went out a walk quite late last night, and the harmony etc for this work seemed to just appear. It was literally a case of going home and writing it down - which means not having to worry RE thinking through the theory for vocal harmony parts :) I also didn't hear it in the original key - this version is transposed higher, and sped up a little.

As weird as it sounds, sometimes it feels like I shouldn't call some pieces 'my' pieces, as it seems to be more a case of having the harmony/tonality etc injected into my brain.

I also scored the work since it was at the front of my mind. The OB6 part I can hear in my head as a choir - in reality it should be a choir. It begins single voice, then two-part, then three-part harmony.

I think this piece sounds great. What could also be very useful would be the backing track minus the vocals; this way, choirs could use it for concerts. If any choirmaster etc happens to be reading this and would like to license the score/backing track, just ping me off an email.

PS the choir should be louder towards the end, but there was some channel distortion coming through." BLCK_NOIR Release Live Stream

Roland JD-800 Synthesizer SN AC80403

via this auction

Unless JD-800s shared serial numbers, it looks like this one suffered some damage since 2015.

"One of the BEST sounding, and versatile synths made. TONS of sliders for editing, for endless sound combinations.
condition looks very good, with a side cap that had a crack in the plastic. (cosmetic thing) super sound. all the keys, knobs, switches, sliders and controls work. this one is must have for the studio, or for live work. it has a MODIFIED power cord, which works, but is not the correct one. because of the age, condition, electronic, and USED, it is sold AS-IS"

KORG-800 DV SN 770300

via this auction

Here's one of those odd things I never noticed before. Take a look at the serial plate on the back of the synth. You will see KORG-800 DV, not KORG DV-800. If you look at the manual you will see KORG800 DV. Note the spacing. Usually synths are Brand Name-#, Name #, or just Name#. You never see Brand# Model. Just thought this was a little odd. If you know of any other synths that do this, feel free to leave a comment.

7:25 Patch to end all patches with MIM and BIM

MIM is a voice based on the architecture of Basimilus Iteritas, but designed to be more gritty and aggressive. Manis is suitable for leads, bass lines, drums, darkness, detuned madness, or pure mayhem.

Sea People - Hardware / No DAW Jam #36

Published on Sep 6, 2018 Jay Hoskins

Title: Sea People
Genre: Electronic Melodic Ambient Downtempo
Artist: Rite Rain Causality - Jay Hoskins

In this track the Tonestar 2600 provides the bass line sequenced by the Timbrewolf. I wanted to try longer patterns in the eurorack so all four channels of the Timbrewolf are used and switched through a sequential switch. The gates are independent of the cv and generated by the Turing machine. The Minilogue provides an initial pad and then a melody is recorded live into the sequencer. The circuit is doing drum duty and additional bass reinforcement. Finally the MS-20 is adding some lead pads. Delay and reverb are from the Flashback and Hall of Fame.

Played live without a computer and recorded directly from the mixer outputs.

"Tanzbar drum machine through the RV500 reverb.

Published on Sep 6, 2018 DivKidVideo

"**TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW** Here's the new BLCK_NOIR from It's a 7 voice drum module with 7 all analogue and discrete circuit drum voices. There's kick, snare, tambourine, closed and open hi hats, metallic beat and cymbal. say this is fine tuned for Darkwave and Techno but you can of course use it for a wide range of styles. It's got a classic early/vintage drum machine vibe similar to the CR-78 in nature but with a few updates. You can tune and adjust the length of the kick (as well as saturate the mix out with it) there's tuning and noise level / noise decay for the snare then 5 additional noise based voices that share blend controls to adjust from white or metallic noise and you can also bit crush these for further variation. There's CV inputs for noise blend, bit crush, bass drum decay and snare decay/noise. There's an on board isolator style filter that will low pass and high pass and a resonance control both with CV. You can clock the module which allows you to play fills holding the drum buttons and as a secondary function with no clock you can finger drum or mute those parts too. There's a bonus sample and hold generated when the module is clocked (great to patch back into the module). Not only can you trigger the drums but you can also control them with an on board VCA accepting 0-5V to control the velocity of each sound. There's individual outs, a mono mixed out, a stereo line level / headphones out and those 8 great 'Airways' FX we've seen in the Grand Terminal. There's a lot to get through so watch in full or skip around with the sections below which will link you to each part of the demo. Cheers! :)

3 Modules #73: Dixie 2+, Marbles, Maths

Published on Sep 6, 2018 Comparative Irrelevance

"I call this one 'choking pulse waves'. Who knows, maybe Eurorack Generative Lo-Fi Video Game Boss Music will be the next big thing?

This patch consists of two voices, where both take advantage of pulse width modulation to "choke out" the sound between notes. I don't know if there's a technical term for this ("this" being pulses that are extremely wide or slim to the point of disappearing), but it reminds me of dying batteries. In the world of effect pedals – analog distortions in particular – a dying battery or underpowered PSU can sometimes be used deliberately to achieve a certain sound. This is called a sustained voltage sag, or voltage "starving". So starving or strangling is what comes to my mind when I hear the sound of disappearing pulse waves. Lovely.
