Brooklyn Synth Expo Set for June 8 - 9

6th Brooklyn Synth Expo - 80+ builders & 500+ devices in a room, coming up on June 8-9

"Brooklyn, NYC - One of the first synth gatherings of its kind, and the only one 100% free to the public, the Brooklyn Synth Expo is an in-the-headphones show of electronic instrument that was launched in 2014, three years after its sister event, the Stompbox Exhibit.

After noticing a growing affinity between the synth and guitar pedal formats, the organizers in 2018 decided to unify them under a big Synth and Pedal Expo, which attracted a record number of 2,500 visitors, making it one of the best-attended synth events in the US.

This year's event, scheduled for June 8-9 will feature for the first time also a series of presentations and workshops in an adjacent room.

While most expos of this kind are hosted in far-flung hotels or convention centers, the Brooklyn Synth Expo is located close to where musicians live, and because of this feels very much like an underground party: this year's event will be hosted in a large (for NYC standards) video facility in Bushwick, the industrial-turned-cool neighborhood many local musicians call home.

This year's show features 80+ vendors and over 500 devices to play with, with a growing presence of Eurorack and Virtual Synth manufacturers.

As usual, there will be plenty of deals on synth and pedals, and also the opportunity to sell and exchange synths through the presence of legendary New Jersey synth store Three Wave Music.

The event is free but requires RSVP, all info can be found here."

Planar FM Indexing

Published on May 2, 2019 Intellijel

"Scales and Planar are a ton of fun together, and with them in a palette case it leaves enough room for 2 Dixies, a µVCA and µVCF. In this patch we're using Planar as an FM Index for the 2 Dixies with µVCF self oscillating as the modulation source.

Scales is playing a sequence, and the different trigger modes have a big impact on how things sound. All these factors combine to make this patch lots of fun to play!"

"Incredibly rare ARP 1631 Analog Sequencer in 100% functional condition. Very clean, and recently serviced by a pro. See photos for physical condition.

This is an incredibly powerful analog sequencer, even today.

2 x 8 steps, or 1 x 16 steps, it has random mode, clock FM modulation for complex clocking, pulse width modulation to alter the gate length, 3 gate busses you can assign each step to, 1/8" CV modulation I/O points throughout.

It outputs two channels of standard 1v/oct quantized CV, and the clocks and gate signals are also eurorack compatible."

The SYNTH-WERK Model 15 can serve you in many ways:

IN THE STUDIO
Make your Model 15 the center of your recording studio and upgrade your modular synthesizer setup with a sound that cre- ated legends. Except for phone-plug-size 5U-modules are by the way fully compatible and patchable to Eurorack Systems, so it ́s not about adding another niche, it’s about expanding your own musical eco-Model and let it grow.

ON STAGE
The SYNTH-WERK Model 15 is a powerfull performer, longing to be used live on stage. Whether you will use it with a sequenc- ing-unit or a keyboard, be assured to have some outstanding sonic possibilities right there at your fingertips. Playing this won- derful instrument is more like talking to an old friend, analogue to that time and space being second-tier – so: enjoy!

The Synthesizer 15 build from 1974 on, equal to its numbered 12 and 10 predeces- sor, was a landmark of craftsmanship.

Likewise its forerunner, the SYNTH-WERK Model 12 is considered an extraordinary example of a supreme and compact com- bination of 5U-tools with explicit portability in mind. Every single unit is composed from a careful selection of the finest prime parts available. At heart it relies on our latest achievement in successfully recre- ating the versatility of the 921 Oscillator in every aspect imaginable, resulting in a SW921A Control Unit combined with two SW921B-Oscillators, alongside an indepen- dent SW921 module.

Compared to the puristic design and mu- sical rawness of its ancestor, the SYNTH- WERK 921 unfolds its capabilities likewise in a much more sophisticated and grownup manner, accompanied by increased tonal flexibility. This is mainly obtained by careful observation of the original build and meanwhile rethinking the whole circuit to produce a VCO that sounds as good as the original. Therefore we respectfully integrat- ed only highly accurate parts and authentic NOS parts, following the original circuit design without any compromise!

The units are extended by a classic SW903A Random Signal Generator as well as the voltage controllable famous lowpass Ladder Filter model SW904A which imparts essentially every audiosource imaginable with its unique character.

More sound sculpting possibilities are implemented with a SW907A Half-octave Filter module that is capable to come up with some structural and flexible formant shaping, not at least due to some integrated custom made high-class inductors. Besides dynamic modulation the two SW911 ele- ments can be used to describe the contour and envelope of the resulting sound by targeting the SW902 Amplifier or as well controlling the SW904A Lowpass-Filter. Regarding attack and decay times you can choose from the same luscious bandwidth like its reference from two milliseconds up to ten seconds.

It is worth mentioning, that you can decide to go for a custom configuration containing the advanced SW914 Fixed Filter Bank, a MIDI/CV Interface or any other configura- tion you desire. The SYNTH-WERK Model 15 ships perfectly embraced in a tolex cov- ered replica of an original Moog Style trav- el-enclosure with front lid and an integrated well-spaced custom power supply unit.

Introducing Metamorph by DNIPRO MODULAR

Published on Apr 30, 2019 DNIPRO MODULAR

"Metamorph is a versatile eurorack sequencer and cv controller, that can control and sequence several parameters at once."

"Metamorph

Eurorack sequencer / Cv controller

Metamorph is a versatile 4 stage x 3 channel cv source with built in sequencer and glide. Inspired by a Serge Tcherepnin concept, Metamorph is designed to control several parameters at once and creates a complex cv source for eurorack system. Each channel is represented by a column of pots, while each column is divided into 4 individual stages by rows, with corresponding button and gate out. It is possible to change stages manually by pressing stage buttons or to sequence them by external sources, like clock, lfo, envelopes etc. Metamorph has a special user sequence feature, which allow to program play oder and duration of the stages, create unique sequence with individual timing per stage and memorize it.

Operating Metamorph is quick and immediate in a good analog fashion, with single control per function. Two modules can be linked together to create a 8-step sequencer with dual CV outs per channel. Additionally, every channel has a deep glide control for performing fast or really slow voltage slides between stages. And, of course, there are ordinary sequencer cv inputs, like reset, hold and revers direction.

Features
3 channels x 4 step sequencer
glide per channel with wide range
two modules can be chained to create 8 stages and double outputs
selectable voltage ranges, uni or bipolar
individual gate outs per stage
cv in input for selecting stages with cv
skiff friendly
solid responsive buttons for manual stage selection

"This is probably my favorite analog subtractive synth of all time.
The Matrix series descended directly from the OB-8, which signaled Oberheim's move away from raw voltage power toward more precise dependability & vast programming possibilities. The Matrix 6 is the perfect compromise of heavenly analog sound & modern control, for under $3k. What it lacked in knobs it more than made up for in features: 2 completely independently-controllable digitally-regulated analog oscillators with the rare ability to use 2 independently shapeable waveforms simultaneously for EACH, a juicy low pass filter capable of self-oscillation, 3 envelopes, 3 LFO's (plus another global vibrato LFO), a multitude of modulation configurations, osc sync, unison, portamento, filter FM, velocity, aftertouch, and the ability to stack two presets. All this and it still sounds so unbelievably good. It was sort of held back by poor MIDI implementation, but synthhacker heroes Gligli & Bob Grieb re-coded the operating system so you could tweak every parameter with a SYSEX controller in real time. Now, Stereoping makes a rack unit with a knob for every function to unleash the almost endless power of the Matrix synths.

This Matrix 6 was rescued from a dumpster sometime in the 90's. It was given a new lease on life by a wiz techno producer, who also happened to be a carpenter during the day, so it was given new wooden endcheeks too. I bought it from him a few years ago when he was downsizing his studio. It wasn't in the best place. 2 of the keys were cracked, the volume pot was broken, the firmware was outdated, the waveforms weren't calibrating right, the filters weren't staying in tune, and sometimes, it just wouldn't turn on. I rebuilt the power supply, fixed up some frayed wire connections, bought a new DAC chip, replaced a broken trimmer, bought a new volume pot, sourced 2 replacement keys from a guy who 3D-prints replicas in Croatia (everywhere else in the world has long been out of original Matrix 6 keys), calibrated the DAC, recalibrated the 3 oscillators that handle tuning for all the voices, updated the firmware to the latest OS that fixes all the bugs, restored full aftertouch sensitivity, and installed a memory battery holder for ease of future replacement. I've been fixing up Matrix series synths for years now and they all suffer from instability in the CEM3396 voice chips that leads to carefully constructed patches melting into muck. Users tend to just replace the CEM's instead of fixing the root problems, so there's a now dire shortage of these chips. I've done work to ensure the synth will soldier on and never give you any hell, as long as you're nice to it. You can trust that all the usual reliability issues that plague Oberheims won't bother this Matrix.

This listing comes with the synth, a power cord, a huge ZIP file of 30+ years worth of patches, and my guarantee as a trained tech."

Introducing SUPER 8 | Native Instruments

Published on May 2, 2019 Native Instruments

"SUPER 8 is a modern take on classic analog polysynth instruments. Check out 350+ presets, then tweak all you want with the intuitive modern interface."

"Berlin, May 2nd, 2019 – Native Instruments today introduces SUPER 8, a new instrument that brings together vintage analog polysynth sounds with an intuitive modern interface. With more than 200 presets, SUPER 8 provides fast access to a diverse array of classic sounds and textures. The instrument also makes it simple to customize sounds while always keeping users within the instrument’s sweet spot. SUPER 8 runs in REAKTOR 6 and the free REAKTOR 6 PLAYER, and is available now at the NI Online Shop for 69€.

Extensive presets

With SUPER 8, users can start creating right away by choosing from 200+ presets – including rich analog strings, ethereal pads, deep basses, biting leads, electronic percussion, and unusual effects. Patches were inspired by iconic analog synths, but SUPER 8 has a character all its own. Modern presets provide combinations of oscillators, filters, and modulation settings that wouldn’t have been possible on original hardware.

Designed for tweaking

SUPER 8 makes it fun and easy to tweak sounds through a clean, next-generation interface. Simple sliders enable users to blend up to four waveforms for each of the two oscillators. They can mix the oscillators, sync them, and add FM oscillation for a digital edge. Users can also adjust low-pass, band-pass, or high-pass filtering, then move ASDR sliders to make quick changes to filter and amplifier envelopes.

The interface’s modulation section lets users easily add motion to sounds. They can choose one or more mod waveforms, then dial in speed and phase. For maximum creative flexibility, users can capitalize on mod routing to map almost any source to any destination.

Built to be played

Users can explore the full creative possibilities of SUPER 8 by controlling the instrument with a MIDI controller. Driving the SUPER 8 pitch wheel, mod wheel, and touch strip from a controller can produce expressive leads, shifting soundscapes, and evolving textures. Users can set parameters directly from the interface’s front page – or take advantage of automatic parameter mapping with a KOMPLETE KONTROL keyboard. Flexible mod routing enables users to adjust pitch, modulation, filtering, keytracking, and other parameters in real-time.

Pricing and availability

SUPER 8 runs in REAKTOR 6 and the free REAKTOR 6 PLAYER and is available now at the NI Online Shop for $69/ 69€ / ¥8780 / £59 / AU$99/ CA$89/ RMB 549"

Patching Panda Punch // Dynamic VCAs, accents, envelopes + more for Eurorack

Published on May 2, 2019 DivKidVideo

"So here's the v2 Punch module from Patching Panda. It's two channels of envelopes and VCAs that add punch, dynamics and accents to your audio inputs or the envelopes you can patch out of it. You can input audio then process that through the onboard VCA using the decay envelope with CV over decay time, control over decay shape and a controllable addition of dynamics through the use of an accent input and level control. You can output the envelopes (two stage/two levels with the decay following the accent pattern too), invert them (or not) and patch those elsewhere for side chain and ducking effects. It's been a pleasure to play with and a great punchy addition to my patches giving my dynamics and more musical patterns.

Have the exact same front panel interface and keyboard in size but in a slimmer case. In lieu of the the manual preset panel have digital preset and sequencer/arp section.

Model:Samples does Amiga Tracker Music - Crystal Hammer

Published on May 1, 2019 tubesockor

"Recreating the classic Commodore Amiga tracker song 'Crystal Hammer' - on an Elektron Model:Samples. The song was originally written by Karsten Obarski back in 1987.

The first section is a background story about Amiga and trackers in general, as well as the process on how this recreation was done.

All the sounds were converted from the original ST-01 files, and the song data was manually input on the Model:Samples, only using four out of the six available channels (all for the sake of authenticity)

At 3:25, the music starts.

This was made possible thanks to the new firmware update 1.02A, which allows samples to be parameter locked."
