Bitty - Pocket-sized Drum Machine and Synthesizer by Curious Sound Objects

Published on Apr 30, 2019 Curious Sound Objects

Currently on Kickstarter

via Arduino.cc

"There are a wide variety of ways to create electronic music. For a capable machine that fits in the palm of your hand and is loud enough to use outdoors, however, it’s hard to imagine a battery-powered device cooler than Bitty from Curious Sound Objects.

The pocket-sized drum machine and synthesizer, currently on Kickstarter, was prototyped using an Arduino Nano and will be fully Arduino-compatible when released. This means that in addition to changing the sound and interface around with readily-available sound packs—which include Theremin Bitty, Techno Bitty, Basement Bitty, Trap Bitty, Lofi Bitty, and Beach Bitty—it can be programmed with the Arduino IDE. The device can even run sound software written for other Arduino boards.

Bitty features four sample trigger buttons, a pair of knobs, and a speaker. Designed for entry-level EDM enthusiasts and studio musicians alike, you can play the drums and melodies manually, as well as trigger patterns to produce dance music or hip hop beats. These can be chosen via the left knob, while the right knob handles pitch, note selection, and arpeggiation."

"This modular system is a modern dedication to Alan R. Pearlman (AKA ARP). It uses the instrument list structure from the arp 2600.

Instead of making another clone arp 2600, I wanted to make an updated synthesiser, like an Arp 2700 type of project.

So there are many extra functions on this system, not found on the original arp2600. The only Arp 2600 circuit that is an exact clone, is the Analog Switch.

Making a Mellotron is a great excuse for getting into the world of Arduino, which is a superb platform for DIY. Per Kristian Risvik's Solina String Ensemble+

Published on Dec 11, 2018 Per Kristian Risvik

Playlist:

1. Some sounds from the Solina String Ensemble+
This Solina didn't have an on/off switch for the ensemble chorus, so my plan was to add that. Instead I added the dry output as a part of the modulation mixer, so modulator 0 is the dry output and modulator 1-3 are the delay lines.
2. Solina String Ensemble MK1 with MIDI
This is a project I've been working on for a while now and I've finally installed MIDI on it, using the Doepfer MTC64 interface. More info about how it was done here.
3. "Straits of Devastation" played on the Solina String Ensemble+
A track composed by Jeremy Soule for Guild Wars 2. It's definitely among one of my favorite Guild Wars 2 tracks - there is a sense of darkness and despair over it, yet it is beautifully majestic.

"Inspired by Albert Steenbergen’s MIDIfication of Jean Michel Jarre’s Eminent 310 Unique, I decided to add MIDI IN on my customized Solina, which I’ve called: "Solina String Ensemble+". Like Albert, I’ve used the Doepfer MTC64 which is an excellent interface for adding MIDI to just about anything! To get the MTC64 to communicate with the Solina I’ve used 4-channel optocoupler ICs, so in order to get access to all the 69 channels needed, I had to use 18 ICs. The last optocoupler does only handle one key, but I connected the remaining channels to the three upper black keys in the top octave, just in case I should think of something fun to use them for - and I have used one of them as a sort of MIDI gate which makes it possible to create rhythmic patterns thru MIDI. So this old Solina is up for some serious techno now :P"

"Here are the details on how the MTC64 is connected to the Solina, thru the optocoupler circuit board – the ground wires from the optocouplers to the MTC64 are not shown. I designed the circuit board in "DIY Layout Creator" and used colored wires from a telephone cable to help me keep track of things during the process of making the board itself and connecting it to the Solina. This did help a lot as it went surprisingly smoothly. The boards are connected to the Solina with connectors so they can be easily removed if there's need to do some maintenance."

"Unlike the later Solina String Ensemble models, there’s hardly any room left inside the original model, but right above the keybed there’s just enough space to squeeze in an optocoupler board and a MTC64. I made some brackets and mounted an L-shaped aluminum bar on the bolts that secures the busbar board."

Eminent 310 Unique and Roland VP-03 string-ensemble comparison

"Just a quick test to see if the VP-03 is up for some classic phased pads with an Electro Harmonix Small Stone phaser.

I didn't push the mini-jack plug all the way into the socket on the VP-03, the chorus gets a bit more wobbly when the stereo channels are combined to mono."

John Tejada on his studio set-up (Electronic Beats TV)

Published on Apr 29, 2019 Telekom Electronic Beats

"John Tejada is one of the most respected electronic music producers in the states. Born in Vienna, but living in California since he was a very young age, he has been exploring the hinterlands between techno and house for over two decades, releasing records on his own Palette Recordings, Poker Flat, 7th City and KOMPAKT. Tejada brings a sumptuous swing and texture to his work all of his very own – partly, perhaps, the result of his mixed use of hard- and software and instinct-driven approach. In this look at his studio set-up, shot in his space in LA, he tells Telekom Electronic Beats TV why it all comes down to putting the sound in the right place."

New Fusion VCO2 from Erica Synths

Published on May 3, 2019 Erica Synths

"Fusion VCO2 is a full analogue sound source with lots of distinct features.

The core of the module is highly stable AS3340-based VCO with three simultaneously available waveforms, transistor-based suboscillator and detune function – two BBD delay lines that make frequency shifter that is mixed back to the principal oscillator in order to emulate two detuned VCOs. Tube crunch – distinct tube overdrive - is added on the top of the mix. Furthermore, Audio input mixes an external audio signal with the principal oscillator which results in crazy sonic experience. Fusion VCO2 is exactly what you need, if you wish to get really low frequencies and have a sound that sets your modular system apart from mass!

Features:
Full analogue design
Great tracking over 8 octave range
Detune function for thickening the sound
-1 oct transistor based suboscillator
Tube overdrive circuit
External audio input
VCO synchronization
Simultaneous waveform outputs"

Prok Modular Eurorack Drums // 4HP 12-bit DSP Percussion ... ACE!

Published on May 3, 2019 DivKidVideo

"The Prok Drum modules BD SN HH CP, bass drum, snare, hi hat and clap are DSP virtual analogue percussion synths giving you 12 bit crunchy drum sounds that morph between 4 corners of an LED window on the module. Each of the corners represents a patch and all parameters of the synthesis morph from one place to the other leaving loads of sweet spots and variations to modulate with the knobs or X and Y position CV. Holding the trigger button cycles through four "quads" which are 4 collections of 4 patches (16 total) that live on the module.

There's a software editor (video on that coming soon) and some updates to come at Superbooth 2019 too.

SILHOUETTE - Visual to Analog Audio Synthesizer with Dual Flight Style Joysticks & Monitor Display

Published on Jan 2, 2019 Pit Przygodda

Kind of a modern day ANS, or Oramics. Also see Virtual ANS for iOS.

"silhouette". A video-to-audio-synthesizer by Pit Przygodda (Prototype 2018).
Infos: www.silhouette-synthesizer.de

6-voice, seperate tuning and modulation, analog-filter, FX. SILHOUETTE trains itself to become a really extraordinary sound-scape-machine!

Technique
s i l h o u e t t e is a software-based synthesizer, that creates sound by using greyscale-data chosen from a picture file.

This is done in real-time.

At the moment, it is programmed under the Pure Data programming environment.

Data-sources:
- real-time-pictures/motion-pictures (camera)
- picture-files
- motion-pictures (films)

Oscillator:
The sound is produced by transforming an area of greyscale-data into sound-data.

Windows:
You have a screen, where you see the camera-picture/picture/film you have loaded in.
You have 2 data-windows within the loaded picture to chose a visual area where you like to extract sound-data.
The 2 windows can be changed in size and position individualy and be modulated by LFO, EG, KBD-follow, audio-waveform or manually in realtime.
Their audio-output is routed anolog to their x/y-position in the picture to coordinates in a quadrophonic sound-system in the performance-room.

Silhouette
So it is possible that the outline of a silhouette is analog to your audio-waveform.
Therefor it is necessary that the silhouette-shape is strictly black and white.
This was the main idea at the beginning of this project:
That you act visually directly IN the waveform.
This is done very sensually by acting on the light-table in front of the camera.
I think about giving that technique a name: "silhouette-synthesis".

Quadrophonia
Since summer 2018 I am building a hardware. It has 2 joystick-controlled-data-windows inside the main-screen which let you move 2 audio-waves analog to their coordinates in the main-wondow inside a quadrophonic space (screen corner-left/top > speaker-front/left; screen corner-right/bottom > speaker back/right etc.).

"This was most recently serviced by Three Wave Music in around 2015. All voices tune but it is having some problems seemingly with the adjustment of voices. Sometimes things work as they should, other times the pots don’t affect the voice parameter values as they should. Sometimes the synth freezes up entirely. I’m not sure exactly what is wrong with it but want to be upfront with saying it is definitely not in perfect working order. That being said, it does play perfectly normally sometimes and sound awesome when it does. All voices tune and it has massive sound. I’m not much of a keyboard player (the synth has functioning midi) but check out the linked videos) "

"A beautiful Roland System 100/Model 101 synthesizer that has been serviced, and works 100% perfectly. The person I bought it from recapped it and cleaned it up. All keys play as they should (no double-triggering), tuning is stable, all original knobs, sliders, switches and jacks are present and work perfectly. Cosmetically it is in beautiful condition, with only a small amount of dings (and some wear around the cutoff freq. slider, and a small scratch). From a smoke-free studio. No writings or stickers anywhere.

This synth's tone has been described as "legendary," "majestic," "silky smooth and clear" and "the best Roland mono ever." It has that classic SH-series sound, but it is thicker, warmer, more detailed, powerful... you get the idea."
