4 Voice Moog Tower-of-Power! [Little Phatty + 3 Slim Phatty Polychain]

Published on Mar 1, 2020 Marshal Arnold

"Tonight I noodle around a bit with a 4 voice Moog Little Phatty and 3 Moog Slim Phatty Synthesizers!

Polychaining the Littple Phatty and Slim Phatty is a simple process, the synths are daisy chained via MIDI DIN cables and I'm using a Novation 61SL MKII to play.

I'm using some external effects in Ableton, they are:
Reason Rack 11 RV7000 MKII Reverb
WAVES H-Delay

The patch is a modified version of the patch 64 - Legato Sweep. I removed the distortion overdrive and the glide from that patch, plus opened up the filter to 50%."

I hope you enjoy this synth-chip jam ft. my good friend Mike from Curious Quail!"

Synthplex 2020 Set for March 26-29 in Burbank, CA

via https://www.synthplex.com

"Exhibits + Seminars + Live Electronic Music + Pop-Up Synth Museum + DIY Synth Build + Gala Banquet

Synthplex® 2020 is back! Come and join the fun in Burbank at Synthplex, the “All Things Synthesizer” festival/ expo. Synthplex has it all; Trade Show Exhibits (Open Friday thru Sunday), Educational, Technology & Product Seminars, Synthesizer History Seminars, Master Sessions & Key Note speeches with Industry Legends (2019 we had Thomas Dolby, Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL), Brian Transeau (aka BT), Harold Faltermeyer and Dave Smith of Sequential), DIY synth building workshops, Live Synth Concerts all weekend long (Thursday night thru Sunday night), the Synthplex Pop-up Synth Museum and the Saturday night Gala Dinner Banquet with a live performance TBA. Last year we had Thomas Dolby give an intimate performance at the Gala Dinner Banquet.

What to Expect at Synthplex

Even in this age of online social media, with myriad synthesizer-related social groups, YouTube performances and tutorials, there is still no substitute for having a physical location where like-minded, synth people can come together and meet face to face/ear to ear. The West Coast has an amazing (and LARGE) community of synthesizer enthusiasts, who all look forward to the times when we can meet up, hang out, break bread and learn new things about synthesis. Enter Synthplex®.

Hands-on Experiences

There will be many opportunities at Synthplex® to get hands-on with a lot of synthesizer gear and much more. In the exhibit halls you will discover new products and you will get to dive deep into these products and experience them for yourself. All weekend long there will be equipment vendors giving demonstrations, and there will be daily DIY synthesizer building workshops (modular and other formats) going on in the morning and the afternoon.

Furthermore, Synthplex® has an extremely special Pop-Up Synth Museum, where you can experience firsthand many rare and valuable synthesizers with the guidance of museum docents. You don’t just get to listen and see these instruments, you actually get to tweak some knobs and play them! Note: Admission into the Pop-UP Synth Museum is a separate pass from the Synth Expo pass, as all profits from the Pop-Up Synth Museum will benefit the Bob Moog Foundation. Each year we will feature a new recipient for this donation..."

"This is the limited edition 2019 version of the OM-1 with 1 extra tape (worn out/feedback) and Softpot Pitch Ribbon controller. Designed by Scott Campbell.

This thing is amazing! Only letting it go to make room for other gear. Works perfect. All items as pictured.

From the website:

The OM-1 Cassette Synthesizer is an analog musical instrument built around the concept that when a continuous tone/note is recorded to tape, its pitch will change as the tape's playback speed is increased or decreased. Individual notes are playable via the 8 buttons (keys), each with a tuning knob directly above it. The volume of the notes can be articulated by using the pressure sensitive volume control - the harder its pressed, the louder the note. A three position switch controls attack/release response of the audio output - Short, Medium, and Long. CV/Gate inputs allow control over the cassette's pitch and volume from a linear (non-quantized) voltage sequencer.

While loosely inspired by instruments like the Mellotron® and Ondes Martenot, the OM-1 has a sound all its own. Because it uses a standard cassette tape as its audio source, the sound creation possibilities are endless. The OM-1 is engineered for experimentation."

Nice box. The pedal art is by Dave, creator of The Packrat.

"This was purchased new and put away for over a decade. Recently found amongst a bunch of other pedals and random bits of gear wile moving. I own 3 of them along side other Metasonix gear. I had money back then and kinda went nuts on spending.

It is truly as new as it was the day it arrived from Lake Port CA, home of Metasonix. The tubes are fresh and barely even warmed up.

I tried posting it on reverb.com but was blocked from doing so because reverb.com has band the sale of products with 'explicit or offensive content'.

Essentially banning this unit and others from being sold

This unit is loud and extremely aggressive. There is no by pass switch and the knob settings are very sensitive. If you give it time and attention you'll find the sweet spots. The TM 7 is all about those edges. You'll know what im talking about when you plug in a heavy kick drum from a drum machine such as a Roland 808, 909 or JoMoX 888, 999 and JoMox Alpha Base, just to name a few.

Though the real magic happens when you plug a Control Voltage source from a CV sequencer.
Thats right! It also a synth module."

Track info:

So a new big item enters the studio, AKAI force. Main use case for this is to sequence some of my gear, such as the Novation peak plus serve as mixer/FX unit for my volcas. Also adding to this obviously it is filled with a lot of goodies and music production stuff to help move the BURG style into more complex chord progressions and layers of my musical making.

This is a first attempt, maybe not really 100% BURG style.. but it does indeed showcase the possibilities using the force in my workflow. All in all I have a good feeling about this purchase.

I hope you will enjoy it !

Gear used:
- AKAI force ( main drums, lo end bass, arps, vocal samples, mixer for my volcas )
- Sub37, lead sound, Strymon timeline and blue sky
- KORG volca keys and bass
- KORG monologue, sequenced from the force + FX from the digitone
- Novation peak, Pads ( sequenced by AKAI force )
- Avalon bassline 303 square style
- Modular, BIA, plonk for percussion
- elektron digitakt, percussion and chord stabs
- Drumbrute impact, extra HHs and FM drum

"This synth is in incredible condition for its age, it has been very well cared for and has never left my studio as long as I’ve had it. There are no issues whatsoever with the synth everything functions perfectly as it should and it sounds incredible. It hurts me to have to let it go but I’ve moved into a smaller studio and no longer have room for all of my full keyboard synths :( I have shipped quite a few vintage synths with no issues but I will be purchasing Reverb’s shipping protection just to be safe. Rest assured it will be packaged extremely well. This is a beautifully preserved piece of Roland’s history. Fast, free shipping!!"

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #81: Böhm Dynamic 4x9 - Song 2

Published on Mar 1, 2020 Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the second song with the Boehm Dynamic 4x9. It's a German FM-synthesizer from mid-80s that were only available as DIY project. It uses 12(!) Yamaha ICs of the type YM2203, which were commonly used in home computers from NEC as well as in arcade games until the early 90s. Each of the ICs has 3 FM-voices for an overall 36 voices 4-part polyphony.

I used for the recording the following FX for the song:

T-Rex Twister, DigiTech Obscura, Alesis Ampliton, Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe, GFI System Specular Reverb 2.

Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated. The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track."

I'd still like to make some better videos on the subject at some point, but in the meantime, here's something, at least."

Luftrum 23 - Soundbank for Pigments 2

Published on Mar 1, 2020 Luftrum1

"Luftrum 23 for Pigments 2 is an ambient cinematic soundbank for the film scoring space traveller and the electronic producer, containing 100 presets plus 22 FX presets, for the reverb and delay effects.

The set is created by Luftrum and taking the sounds back-to-basics in the vein of early Luftrum releases with rich pads, silky Vangelis-like keys, bitcrushed yet mellow synth leads, underscoring textures and conceptual granular work with sonics originating from space itself - like the dusty, mesmerizing granular pad Stillness of Stars sculpted out of a short snippet of otherworldly frequencies from Voyager 2 as it passed through the outer magnetosphere in 1979 and the pulsing drone based on the cryptic FRB signals from deep space billions of light-years away, which are intercepted, noise reduced and timestretched 350 times.

The soundbank is designed to evoke emotions and raise questions about the depths of space and time, journeys to the unknown, life and existence and the symbiosis between the tiny pale blue dot we call Earth and the vast eternal universe, with inspirations drawn from artists like Biosphere, Jonn Serrie, Vangelis, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Stellardrone, Ascendant and Steve Roach.

All presets got a few dB headroom, have modwheel assigned and aftertouch where it gave meaning. The soundbank is NKS ready, contains NKS presets and audio previews for users of Native Instruments hardware. There’s a PDF guide included, describing how to install the set.

Some of the audio contained are from the NASA archives and used in compliance with their Media Usage Guidelines. NASA is not affiliated with Luftrum and does not endorse the use of the audio. The FRB signal is from the Harvard Dataverse. The sonification itself is the public domain, according to the terms.

Leap Day's Random Hardware Challenge

Published on Feb 29, 2020 juanito moore

"This weekend, the challenge was to feature random elements in your music. A couple years ago I designed and built a module, early on in my quest to design a CV sequencer, that can algorithmically generate CV sequences. The module is very hard to use, not intuitive at all, and the sequences it spits out are not always very good. And when it comes up with a good one, there's no way to get it back.

Pair that with my latest module, the most DIY Mutable Instruments Braids ever, and I played something I'm pretty happy with."
