Nick

"1898 silent film by Georges Méliès with newly composed soundtrack by Nick St George (2020). Thanks to archive.org for Public Domain footage."

Great timing in this one.

"I used Cherry Voltage Modular virtual synth, some of Garageband's virtual instruments and one or two Apple Loops e.g. the stings when things disappear or the astronomer falls over. An M-Audio keyboard controlled the instruments. I assembled it in GB and then 'mastered' it in iMovie."

Waldorf MicroWave 1 + Access Programmer + rare modification (4x audio-inputs)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is an incredibly RARE synthesizer because it has been modified to be able to receive 4 audio inputs and pass each of them through the wavetable oscillator and through the Curtis filter too, then out individually or as a summed stereo signal. The modification was officially endorsed by Waldorf, but there were very few units done. You can see the 4 inputs directly above the 4 individual outputs on the back of the rack unit. This modification alone should significantly increase the value of this unit above the average selling price of £1650 for other MicroWave 1s sold on Reverb. I am also including the Access MicroWave Controller, which is an external MIDI-controller which provides knob-per function control of the rack unit (which is otherwise difficult to adjust). The Access controller usually sells individually on Reverb for £400-£500, but I am including it together with the synthesizer because they make a perfect match. This Waldorf MicroWave Rev. 1 rack unit has all the wavetables from the PPG Wave synthesizer and more, and also a genuine Curtis analog filter, and also the 2.0 firmware update installed to improve the sound."

Vintage ARP Odyssey Mk II 2813 Synthesizer Fully Serviced w/ LED Sliders SN 1436

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction, also on Reverb

"This vintage ARP Odyssey has just been fully serviced by Synthchaser, the west coast's leading ARP specialist - recapped, new ICs, new key bushings, all new LED sliders, fully functional, tuned and calibrated, and sounding awesome! The Odyssey was ARP's answer to the Minimoog, a feature packed scaled down version of the legendary ARP 2600. This particular ARP Odyssey is equipped with the 4075 filter, the 4 pole LPF found in all late model ARP synths.

The synth is in great condition, and the silkscreen is strong and clean, which is often lacking in Mk II Odysseys found on the market. Two small holes in the panel above the lower end of the keyboard (where an old mod was removed) have been tastefully capped off. The LED sliders are color coded to correspond to the original colored slider caps, which give a visual indicator of the function of each control. If you are afraid this will wear thin when Christmas season is over, I am willing to change the LED color scheme to something more subdued, or disable the illumination entirely for the buyer before shipping, upon request.

Work just completed on the synth included:

Nanoloop FM Synth

via this auction

"Nanoloop is a Stepsequencer which means that a pattern of 1/16 notes is played repeatedly while these notes can be edited in various respects like volume, pitch etc. There are no channel / instrument settings, instead all parameters are set step-wise.
There are four channels, playing simultaneously. Each channel's patterns can be saved to file slots in flash memory and are then available for new combinations."

Anvil Synthesizers "The Anvil" Digital Percussion Synthesizer Ad

This one is via @mu_zines

"The Anvil" was featured in this post from 2014. Muzines, an online repository of music magazines, posted an article on The Anvil here. The question though, is did any of these ever get produced? If you know, feel free to leave a comment. The advert to the left implies they were taking orders at some point they were selling off their IP. Interesting bit of synth history. One of those mystery synths no one knows what happened to...

Update: note the address in the print is 29 Chowmley Gardens, Aldred Road, London NW6. Someone mentioned it could be Cholmley Gardens, pictured. A search on Chowmley gets redirected to Cholmley, so this is likely. Interesting to see where it could have all happened. I used to walk by Serge's shop in Hollywood, none the wiser, when I was a kid. I do remember the wig shop. :)

Update2: interesting side note from Rob Walker: "Reading the in depth article linked to, one of the designers was Roy Gwinn who is known for his Guitar Effects pedal design which Chris Carter adapted into the Gristleizer. I sold Roy a Doepfer Euro case a couple of years back, I’ve asked if he can shed any light."

Update3: via the comments below: "The story of the Anvil Percussion Synth is in RHYTHM MACHINES 2: The 1980s Drum Computers - By Alex Graham. It's available on Amazon (the book, not the Anvil)." [on Amazon here]

Update4: From Roy Gwinn: 'No, the Anvil was never finished. I underestimated the time to do the software, and the hardware was a bit iffy when it got hot. All fixable, but we ran out of money.'

“The word is now a virus. The flu virus may have once been a healthy lung cell. It is now a parasitic organism that invades and damages the central nervous system. Modern man has lost the option of silence. Try halting sub-vocal speech. Try to achieve even ten seconds of inner silence. You will encounter a resisting organism that forces you to talk. That organism is the word.” – William S. Burroughs, The Ticket That Exploded"

"ConCord" sinfonietta for 16 oscillators by Platon Buravicky

Erica Synths

"ConCord – sinfonietta for 16 well-tempered oscillators was composed and performed by composer Platon Buravicky during his residency in Erica Synths Studio on November 2020.
Platon used custom, full analogue modular system, assembled in Erica Synths 3x126HP monster case. The system consists of 16 Black VCO2’s, 8 Black MIDI-CV interfaces, 4 Black Quad VCA’s, 6 Black Dual EG’s, 1 Black Envelope Generator and 9 Pico Scales. No VCF’s – all sounds come straight from VCO’s, expression is added by Black MIDI-CV module modulation output adjusted by Pico Scale. The system is sequenced by a score in Sibelius software and MOTU MIDI interface."

Anyma Phi: Playing using a MIDI guitar (MIDI pickup + audio input)

Aodyo Instruments

"You can play the Anyma Phi as a synth, using a MIDI controller, or as an audio effects unit, using the audio input. Or… you can do both at the same time!
Here, Jonathan uses a guitar equipped with a Fishman TriplePlay MIDI pickup that sends the MIDI data of his performance to the Anyma Phi, in addition to the guitar's own audio output.
Having both MIDI and audio allows you to augment your guitar sound with resonators and other physical models that are always kept in tune with your playing, opening a wide range of possibilities!

Anyma Phi is an affordable hybrid monophonic synthesizer that allows you to create new sound universes inspired from the real world, where objects collide, vibrate, and resonate.

Anyma Phi blends the classic ingredients of electronic music with physical modeling technology, allowing it to simulate acoustic sound sources, such as strings or reeds, as well as resonating structures, like wood, glass, or metal."

Joranalogue MORPH 4 “Dimensional Modulation Array” // a Eurorack morphing mixing modulating VCA hub

DivKidVideo

See the dealers on the right for availability.

"Here we have the Morph 4 Eurorack module from Joranalogue Audio Design. They call it a “dimensional modulation array” which is a fitting name for a quad VCA with all the bells and whistles of a morphing modulation source built in with mixing, MIN/MAX logic, sub mixes, CV over everything and in typical Joranalogue style … simply pushing analogue design that bit further. The potential list of uses cases is massive, so I’ve got lots of technical and musical patches in the video to really put it through it’s paces and give it the deep dive it deserves. This reminds me of Serge style “patch programability” and really giving modulation (something Rob Hordijk says in the key to modular synthesis) the love it deserves. It’s as simple of complex as you like."

VAI 10 : Böhm Solist 78 / Crumar Multiman S2

Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"The Roland TR77 Drum machine is going through the Emthree Pulsatron Mixer for crunch.
The Dr. Böhm Solist 78 is playing through a mysterious no-brand phaser "Rotor Monster" (that could be some kind of Vermona product) while the seconds short decay chords go through the Roland RE-301 Space Echo.
The short drum fills comes from the Dr. Böhm Solist 78 as well, with Telefunken Echo Mixer spring reverb.
The Elka Solist 505 is a house favorite, an underdog, monophonic synth with a unique timbre.
The drum machines are not midi-or clock synced, just synced manually.
We make these videos as a showcase for our studio and for curious vintage heads - and for fun.
We don't dilly-dally too much with production and mixing but it can sound pretty good with headphones on."
