Roland FANTOM Synthesizer Version 2.0 Update for FANTOM 6, FANTOM 7 & FANTOM 8

RolandChannel

Update: loopop video [and press release] added below.

"FANTOM is a new kind of creative hub, where you can pull together all the sounds and inspiration around you into one music production environment. And it keeps growing and evolving with new sounds, features, and refinements based on customer feedback.

Building on the recent additions of multiple SuperNATURAL sound engines and a stunning 32-band stereo vocoder, FANTOM now takes another giant leap forward with version 2.0. The free update includes major enhancements to FANTOM’s sampling, sequencing, effects, and routing capabilities, and new ways to make FANTOM the center of your creative universe.

In this video, Mark Watson takes you through some of the new features of FANTOM v2.0. Use these links to jump ahead to learn more about the features that interest you most:

00:00 FANTOM Version 2.0 Overview
01:38 New Sampling Features

The sampling engine gets a radical overhaul in version 2.0, with the ability to sample directly to the keyboard or to build detailed multisamples up to 352 samples per tone. Keyboard samples and multisamples can be edited on board and used as the basis of any oscillator/partial in a ZEN-Core tone. With four oscillators per tone and up to 16 tones in a Scene, the sound design potential is mind-bending.

In addition to other audio routing enhancements, FANTOM’s master section now has a TFX (Total Effects) processor. Along with the already-equipped master compressor and EQ, the TFX processor can add any of its 90 effects to FANTOM’s master output. And now you can use effects on input, and even sample the result!

Sequencing continues to take advantage of FANTOM’s high-resolution touchscreen. You can now draw and edit automation using multiple gestures, and the new microscope mode lets you fine-tune each note to perfection.

Each of FANTOM’s 16 zones can already be assigned to an internal sound or an external input or software synthesizer. Now, each zone can be set to both for truly epic sounds! You can even transpose each zone independently and save the settings in a Scene.

And speaking of Scenes, you can now visualize your Scene Chains in a list and easily swap their places. You can even jump around your Scene Chain using handy markers.

Finally, version 2.0 lets you change the touchscreen background to match your mood or creative space.

If you’re a FANTOM owner, be sure to sign up for a free Roland Account. Using the latest version of Roland Cloud Manager software, you can download free SuperNATURAL acoustic and electric piano sound collections for your FANTOM and explore a huge variety of sound expansions for FANTOM and Roland Zen-Core instruments.

Update2: and the official press release:

"Los Angeles, CA, September 18, 2020 — Roland has announced the Version 2.0 update for owners of the FANTOM 6, 7, and 8 synthesizers. Leveraging the deep, expandable power of the ZEN-Core Synthesis System at the heart of the FANTOM series, this free, user-installable update delivers major enhancements to the sampling, sequencing, effects, and routing capabilities, while also providing new customization options for live performance and studio production.

Introduced in 2019, FANTOM is a next-generation creative hub where users can pull together all the sounds and inspiration around them into one music production environment. And the platform keeps growing and evolving, with new sounds, features, and refinements providing continuing value to owners. Building on the recent additions of multiple SuperNATURAL sound engines and a 32-band stereo vocoder, FANTOM takes another giant leap forward with Version 2.0, bringing more user-requested features and inspiring workflow improvements.

The FANTOM sampling engine gets a significant overhaul in Version 2.0. Users now have the ability to sample directly to the keyboard or build detailed multisamples, which can be edited on board and used as the basis of any oscillator/partial in a ZEN-Core tone. With up to 352 samples per tone and 16 tones in a Scene, the sound design potential is vast.

Version 2.0 also brings a TFX (total effects) processor to FANTOM’s master section, complementing the existing master compressor and EQ. The TFX processor introduces deep sound-shaping power with 90 different effects that can be applied to the master output. Numerous audio routing features have also been added, including the ability to apply effects to audio input sources and sample the results.

FANTOM features a color touchscreen interface, and the sequencing enhancements in Version 2.0 take even greater advantage of this powerful tool. Users can now draw and edit automation using multiple gestures, while the new microscope mode lets them fine-tune every note to perfection.

Each of FANTOM’s 16 zones can already be assigned to an internal sound or an external input like a software synthesizer. With Version 2.0, internal and external sources can now be layered or split within a zone to build huge sounds and intricate performance setups. It’s also possible to transpose each zone independently and save settings in Scenes for instant recall. And the Scene Chain function has been enhanced with a list view, where users can easily swap positions and use markers to quickly jump to different sections.

Version 2.0 also brings new ways for users to customize FANTOM, including modifying the touchscreen background to match their creative environment.

Developed from the ground up for modern players, FANTOM models offer exceptional playability and aftertouch support with Roland’s best keyboards ever, including the acclaimed PHA-50 on the 88-key FANTOM 8 and a semi-weighted action on the 76-key FANTOM 7 and 61-key FANTOM 6. In addition to the color touchscreen, there are plenty of knobs and sliders for intuitive and immediate control, plus a dedicated synthesizer section with oscillator, filter, and envelope controls.

Download the Fantom Version 2.0 firmware update here."

Akai Introduces MPC Jupiter Rising Synth Expansion by INHALT

Published on Mar 16, 2020 INHALTVIDEO

"I'm very pleased to announce the release of Jupiter Rising, the first INHALT Sample Library exclusively for the Akai MPC and Force range. This library is available directly through Akai Professional:

https://mpcsoftware.akaipro.com/#cbp=...

When I first got the MPC X I was taken aback by the sheer sound quality of the new audio engine. The filters, in particular, sounded warm and very analog like. After putting the machine through several productions, I quickly realized that the X is essentially a modern day Fairlight. It soon became my go to production center piece and my older MPCs (3000 and the ASQ10 sequencer) were quickly sold. Yes, it's that good. After some more time of working with the machine passed, I wanted to develop a comprehensive set of synthesizer oriented patches that could be quickly recalled for fast production access but with no compromise in sound quality. One of the most useful synths in a production context, to my ears and experience, is the Jupiter 8. While not a particularly showy synth, its tone and range of sounds makes it possible to slot into any production. As such, I thought this would be a great candidate for a deep sampling.

This library is the culmination of many months of work doing exactly that. Some patches are multi-sampled classic JP8 patches, and while those sound absolutely exceptional, the real stars are the short cycle samples. I employed the power of the MPC Engine to play back a different short-cycle sample per key press, per zone, randomly. This creates the feeling of playing the real JP8 as every key press is slightly different than the previous. When combined with the vast set of filters, an incredibly convincing analog-like sound is the end result. There are many patches of various combinations of samples included to cover every possible oscillator combination like on the real synth (i.e. 1 vco saw, 2 vco saw+saw, 2 vco saw+square ...) which leads to the most convincing sample based emulation of the classic synth. These raw patches serve as a starting point for your own sound design, however there are also many characteristic INHALT patches that are ready to go for your own music making.

In short, once the library was done, I was absolutely floored by how accurate and convincing this sample library really is at getting the mood, vibe, feel, and exact sound of the JP8. I think you will find the same. I had a really fantastic time working with all at Akai Professional on this and out of the many projects I've taken on, I'm probably the most pleased with how the end result came out on this one. All of the sounds (including drums) that you hear are 100 percent the Jupiter Rising Library recorded directly from the MPC X stereo output."

"Introducing Jupiter Rising, the latest expansion instrument offering from Akai Professional. Jupiter Rising re-creates the legendary sounds of one of the world's most iconic synthesizer. The highly sought after sonic palette is now available for your MPC X, MPC Live, MPC One and Force."

ALESIS INTRODUCES NEW DM10 ELECTRONIC DRUM SET

"DM10 Pro Kit Features New Sound Module, New Pads, New Rack and New Pedal

Cumberland, R.I. (Jul. 17, 2009) – Alesis, the world’s leading manufacturer of professional audio equipment and studio electronics, announces its new flagship drum set, the DM10 Pro Kit. The drum set will make its debut at Alesis's booth, number 400, at the Summer NAMM Show held at the Nashville Convention Center, July 17 – 19.

The DM10 Pro Kit is the product of extensive research and development efforts. Based around the completely new DM10 sound module, the DM10 Pro Kit features Alesis’ RealHead drum pads, SURGE Cymbals made of real cymbal alloy and an ErgoRack mounting system.

Drummers will immediately notice the DM10 module’s outstanding sound quality. This new drum sound module contains true drum, cymbal and percussion sounds built from real samples of classic studio drums and prized cymbals. Drummers will find some of the most in-demand acoustic drum sounds from legendary drum brands, a huge arsenal of top producers' go-to snare drums, real American, Canadian, Chinese, and Turkish cymbals, and electronic beat-machine sounds that have fueled the biggest hit records.

Discerning drummers will notice that each sound is actually a series of different samples: multiple dynamic-level samples and articulations are all built in so as the drummer plays harder and softer, the drum or cymbal changes its timbre, not just its dynamics. This engineered realism is known as Dynamic Articulation™, an Alesis exclusive. Drummers can play with or without reverb for different room sounds and enjoy a wide variety of rimshots, rim clicks and different stick-placement sounds on the cymbals. For example, a hi-hat’s sound depends on a number of factors: how open or closed the pedal is, how hard it is struck, and other variables resulting in 40 different sounds – plus foot chick and heel splash.

The DM10 module not only has a breathtaking collection of sounds on board, it is also the world's first drum-sound module that enables players to load new sound sets via USB connection to their computer. This means that owners’ sounds will always stay fresh, current and cutting edge. Drummers can also use the DM10 as a trigger-to-MIDI interface for performing and tracking with software drum modules such as BFD, Toontrack and Reason. Drummers can play along with the tracks in the DM10’s internal sequencer, mix in an iPod or other MP3 player and play along.

The DM10 module has 12 TRS inputs, enabling drummers to create custom configurations with up to 24 different pads. Its top-panel mixer gives drummers easy access to creating custom mixes.

The DM10 Pro Kit has acoustic-feeling RealHead pads in eight-inch and 10-inch sizes. The dual-zone pads feature real mylar drumheads and real triple-flanged counterhoops for the feel professional drummers demand. The snare and tom pads are dual zone, enabling players to perform rimshots, rim clicks or assign other sounds such as wind chimes, cymbals, gongs and cowbells on the tom rims.

The DM10 Pro Kit comes with premium SURGE Cymbals, the only serious choice in electronic cymbals. The kit comes with a 12” SURGE Hi-Hat Cymbal, a 13” SURGE Crash Cymbal with choke and a 16” SURGE triple-zone Ride Cymbal with choke. Based around a genuine alloy cymbal and coated with a clear sound-dampening layer, SURGE Cymbals feel like acoustic cymbals because they begin life as just that. The Crash and Ride cymbals feature large choke strips on the undersides for even more attention to accurate cymbal control. The SURGE Ride also features multiple-zone triggering on the bell, face and edge. The SURGE Hi-Hat Cymbal is continuously controllable using the included pedal.

Drummers will appreciate the DM10 Pro Kit’s ergonomically curved, chrome-plated ErgoRack. It is heavy gauge, heavy duty, and supremely adjustable. The ErgoRack is large enough to enable drummers to add on additional drum pads and SURGE Cymbals. They can even mount acoustic drums, cymbals, and percussion instruments on this roadworthy system. It employs standard one and one-half-inch tubing for compatibility with virtually all drum manufacturers’ rack hardware. The rack features quick-release, metal clamps for fast setup and tear down. The Crash and Ride cymbals mount on large, knurled boom cymbal arms that are height adjustable right in the rack down tubes. The DM10 Pro Kit comes with tom mounts that enable freely adjustable mounting. Drummer-friendly wing-screws are present on all important rack clamps and pads for ease of adjustment without reaching for a drum key. The drum pads mount on standard 10.5mm L-rods with low-slip, knurled mounting surfaces.

“The DM10 Pro Kit is a giant leap forward for us,” said Jim Norman, Product Manager, Alesis. “We’ve taken everything we’ve learned about electronic percussion, and built the DM10 Pro Kit from the ground up to deliver an incredible playing experience at a breakthrough price point.”

The DM10 Pro Kit will be available from musical instrument and professional audio retailers in Q3 2009.

Introducing the Tom Oberheim & Dave Smith OB-6 Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer

Uploaded on Jan 20, 2016 Dave Smith Instruments - "Tom Oberheim & Dave Smith Introduce the OB-6"

Update: new demo video from INHALT in via Soviet Space Child below!
Update2: DSI / Tom Oberheim - OB6 - live looping demonstration by Daniel Davis added below.

Awesome video! You'll find an audio demo at the bottom of this post. So, if you weren't sure NAMM had any big surprises coming, well here you go. A brand new six voice polyphonic Oberheim synth based on the original SEM's discrete VCOs and filters, complete with trademark blue pin strips, and a few extras. This is not a CEM based Oberheim. This is discrete analog with some modern capabilities. Think closer to the original Oberheim FVS and classic OB-X (CEM VCOs & VCFs came with the OB-Xa). A new Tom Oberheim six voice polysynth has arrived!

The following is the official press release:

"Tom Oberheim and Dave Smith Unveil OB-6 Analog Synthesizer

Legendary Poly Synth Creators Team Up on New Instrument with Discrete VCOs and Filters

Anaheim, CA—January 21, 2016—Dave Smith Instruments today announced the OB-6, a new 6-voice synthesizer with an all-analog signal path and discrete VCOs and filters developed in collaboration with Tom Oberheim. Boasting a sound engine inspired by Oberheim’s original SEM (the core of his acclaimed 4-voice and 8-voice synthesizers), the new instrument is designed to provide true, vintage SEM tone with the stability and exibility of modern technology.

Said Smith: 'Tom and I have been friends and friendly competitors since the late 1970’s. Back in the day, people were typically in either the Prophet or the Oberheim camp. Now, with the Prophet-6 out and doing so well, we thought it would be fun to combine our strengths and bring back Tom’s classic polyphonic sound, too — in a modern format.' Added Oberheim: 'A lot of people, myself included, have always felt that the SEMs had a certain uniquely big, organic sound unlike anything else. Working with Dave to make that sound widely available again with some modern touches and full programmability has been real a pleasure.'

The OB-6 features two discrete voltage-controlled oscillators (plus sub-oscillator) per voice, with continuously variable waveshapes (sawtooth and variable-width pulse, with triangle on oscillator 2). There is a classic SEM- inspired state-variable lter (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and notch) per voice. Voltage-controlled ampli ers complete the all-analog signal path. 'The classic, bold SEM sound is all there,' said Oberheim.

Present also is X-Mod, with lter envelope and oscillator 2 as modulation sources (with bi-polar control). Destinations include oscillator 1 frequency, oscillator 1 shape, oscillator 1 pulse width, lter cutoff, and lter mode. The knob-per-function front panel puts virtually all parameters at a user’s ngertips. Toggling on the Manual switch enables live panel mode, in which the OB-6 switches to the current settings of its knobs and switches.

A dual effects section provides studio-quality reverbs, delays (including standard and BBD), chorus, and faithful recreations of Tom Oberheim’s acclaimed phase shifter and ring modulator. The effects are digital, with 24-bit, 48 kHz resolution, but a true bypass maintains a full analog signal path. Additionally, the OB-6 features a multimode arpeggiator and a polyphonic step sequencer with up to 64 steps (and up to 6 notes per step) plus rests. It allows polyphonic keyboard input and can sync to external MIDI clock.

The full-size, four-octave, semi-weighted keyboard is velocity and aftertouch sensitive. Said Dave Smith, 'As with the Prophet-6, we made size a primary concern on the OB-6. It’s the right mix of power and portability and it ts right in on-stage or in the studio.' Added Oberheim, 'And of course, it’s got that unmistakable SEM sound that’s going to turn a lot of heads. '

The OB-6 is manufactured and sold by Dave Smith Instruments. It will be available in March, with a projected MAP of $2,999."

Update: new demo from INHALT in via Soviet Space Child.

Oberheim Dave Smith OB 6 Demo by INHALT

Published on Jan 21, 2016 INHALTVIDEO

This sounds like an Oberheim.

"As long time users of the Oberheim OB8 and 2 Voice (take a listen to our "Occupations" EP as both are on it all over the place) we were pleasantly surprised when Dave Smith Instruments showed us their new analog workhorse and collaboration with the inimitable Tom Oberheim— the OB6. The allure for the Oberheim polyphonic sound, for us, has always been it's unique melancholic tone colour. No matter what kind of sounds are programmed, Oberheim's tend to have this wonderful midnight music vibe, like driving in a car late at night circa 1983. We're pleased to report that the OB6 captures this sound quality effortlessly and in spades.

Our approach to the design of the factory bank patches we submitted (most of which you hear in the demo) was rather simple: we made the same kinds of sounds we would program on our Oberheims, and barring a couple, largely ones we would find useful in a production context. Though we don't typically record synthesizers with FX printed on the same track, the FX engine is so wonderful sounding on the OB6, and highly controllable, that it made us reconsider. In short, the FX engine is no slouch, and for the many decades spent dismissing the on board FX of most 'modern' synths, this is the first time that we've heard an FX engine exude the same quality as the top end hardware units from Lexicon, Eventide, or AMS that we tend to use in the production process.

Everything you hear on the demo was done entirely on the OB6. Absolutely NO additional FX or sequencers were used. We simply ran the stereo output from the OB6 into a DI and a stereo mic pre amp directly into Pro Tools HD and tracked it in."

I own an OB-Xa and the two videos above nail the sound and then some.

KORG Groove by Sinevibes - multitimbral bass & drum machine

Sinevibes

KORG Groove on NTS-1

"Groove is a multitimbral bass and drum machine for KORG prologue, minilogue xd and NTS-1. It’s the most complex and sophisticated multi engine plugin ever developed, employing a network of 14 DSP blocks that reconfigure themselves in real time. Using such immense power, Groove maps bass, drum and percussion instruments onto 7 separate keyboard zones, turning your synthesizer into a self-contained, groovebox-style sound module. Each zone provides a vast library of carefully crafted sound presets with expressive control, and includes a switch for variable trigger probability – an advanced function which can dramatically liven up bass riffs and drum patterns. Groove also has a specially designed output stage with unusually punchy dynamics – making this plugin fully production- and performance-ready.

NAMM: Kurzweil PC361

"PC361 Overview
The Ultimate Performance Controller Keyboard

With a sleek new look on the outside, and an arsenal of Kurzweil's latest cutting edge chip technology under its hood, the 61-note PC361 delivers 128 voices of incredible sound quality along with a host of powerful, easy to use features. The PC361 is Kurzweil's ultimate performance controller keyboard, with an enormous collection of stunning sounds combined with comprehensive real-time controller functions.

In addition to our renowned Triple Strike Grand Piano, the PC361 features hundreds of new sounds; basses, drums, guitars, and synths suited for every style and taste, along with a collection of flawless vintage keyboard emulations, KB3 Mode and over 250 orchestral and string section programs.

The PC361's new Dynamic V.A.S.T. architecture is a huge step forward in synthesis, the fruit of several major strides we've made in improving processing power, flexibility and user-friendliness. Good news for synth enthusiasts - we've seamlessly integrated our legendary VA-1 Virtual Analog Synthesizer into the new system!

For good measure we include an unlimited-track sequencer with 960 PPQ resolution and more effects processing power than our acclaimed KSP8 processor, making the PC361 a full blown music production workstation. Add in USB, flash xD card port, a newly designed keyboard action, and a new intuitive user interface, and you've got the next generation of Kurzweil instruments.

It's a performance controller. It's a synthesizer. It's a workstation.
What's Inside...

One thing which clearly sets Kurzweil apart from the competition is the fact that we design our own chips (called ASICs) for all Kurzweil products. Simply put, our chips are customized for optimum audio performance. What does this mean for the end user? It means that all of the processing power in a Kurzweil chip is devoted exclusively to sound. It means no noticeable latency - the performance is always lightning fast. And most importantly, it translates into that rich, full, glitch-free sound for which Kurzweil has become famous. Yes developing our own chips is more expensive and more time consuming. We think it's well worth it. Once you've heard the PC361, we think you'll agree.
The Kurzweil Sound...

The PC361 offers an enormous sound set of over 850 programs, raising the bar once again for both audio quality and variety. With the best samples in the industry, and a powerful, responsive synth engine breathing life into them, you'll feel like you're playing an actual instrument, not just playing samples. Of course there's the famous Kurzweil Triple Strike Piano, with dozens of variations to accommodate every kind of player. All of the basic sounds - basses, guitars, drums, horns and synths - have been painstakingly programmed to reflect the needs of today's professional players, representing a broad selection of styles and flavors from the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and today.

Also included is our Classic Keys ROM, which puts an impossibly large vintage keyboard rig at your fingertips. These are vintage emulations which actually sound like vintage instruments and classic recordings. The recognizable sounds of those classic electromechanical instruments, with all of their characteristic imperfections, have been faithfully re-created, along with pedals, amps and speakers. Lush Mellotrons, growling electric pianos, and punchy Clavinets are all there at the touch of a button, programmed to sound just like those classic albums.

For more vintage firepower, the PC361 is equipped with the most advanced version of Kurzweil's widely lauded KB3 Mode tonewheel organ simulator, which screams, sputters and sizzles just like the original. In addition to newly developed Leslie effects, and a new bank of B3 programs, we've also included sounds from the classic Vox and Farfisa combo organs. The PC361's 9 sliders provide real-time drawbar control.

The PC361 offers a full range of world class orchestral sounds, including our new String Section ROM bank, making it ideal for film-scoring and soundtrack projects. Every type of articulation, every nuance has been captured, with samples of full and divisi sections of violins, violas, cellos, and double bass. The details, the warm swells, animated pizzicatos and the sound of scraping rosin all add to the breathtaking effect of these string sections. You can plug and play with sounds worthy of a finished production - instant gratification with uncompromising sound quality.
Dynamic V.A.S.T...

Under the hood of the PC361 is simply the most powerful synthesis engine ever created by Kurzweil. Dynamic V.A.S.T. picks up where the K series left off. Having up to 32 layers per program means that emulations of real instruments can be extremely detailed and accurate, while the synthesized sounds can be extraordinarily large and complex.

Expanding upon our V.A.S.T. architecture, the PC361's new architecture delivers more power and flexibility combined with unprecedented ease of use. Users can now create and store their own DSP algorithms, with nearly limitless possibilities for routing.

In another huge development, we've resurrected the VA-1 Virtual Analog Synthesizer, having built it's synthesis engine right into the new system. Hear the VA-1's power-shaped, anti-aliasing oscillators (including supersaw, triplesaw, and hard sync oscillators) combined with a newer, larger set of V.A.S.T. filters (like the classic-style 4pole low pass w/ resonance) and non-linear processors and you'll understand why the internet is buzzing about this feature.
Cascade Mode...

Every layer in a program can be routed through the DSP of any other layer, in series or blended together, with up to 32 layers. It's the same concept as Triple Mode on our K26 series, without the 3 layer limit. You can run your sound through literally dozens of filters (which can all move independently in real-time) in addition to Kurzweil's signature DSP processors like Shaper, Wrap and Distortion, allowing for some truly dazzling results. This is one more feature which makes the PC361's synth engine so powerful and so different than anything else on the market.
User Interface...

While the PC361's user interface may look familiar to veteran Kurzweil users, major improvements have been made, allowing for a much more user friendly experience. The PC361's backlit 240 x 64 display conveys all the information you'll need, when you need it, in an elegant, easy to navigate environment.

Programs are categorized and can be selected by scrolling or by using bank and program select buttons. Further, user favorites can be organized into convenient "Quick Access" banks for easy one touch recall.

In addition to fast navigation, each preset sound is accompanied by an "Info" screen which can be accessed at the touch of a button. As every sound can have its own customized set of real-time, physical controllers (sliders, modwheel, switches, CC Pedals, mono pressure, etc.) , the Info button makes viewing the current assignments effortless.

Complimenting the PC361's killer soundset is the the Easy Audition feature, where every one of the PC361's presets is linked to a bank of "riffs", recorded sequences which demonstrate each sound in an appropriate context. Just hit the "play" button on the front panel and get a quick musical preview of the current selection. Program selection and navigation, fast and easy.

Helping to tap the system's full potential, the PC3 also sports a feature-laden software-based Desktop Editor with comprehensive, easy to use features. (free download- both Mac & PC platforms available)
Effects...

With up to 16 insert effects, two available auxiliary sends, PLUS a global Master FX section, the PC361 offers more than twice the processing power of our acclaimed KDFX engine. Effects can be chained together in series, or distributed among the PC361's 16 multitimbral channels. And these are simply the best effects in the business - burning distortions, transparent compressors, warm phaser and chorus effects, perfect reverbs - everything from flawless vintage emulations to concert halls which decay into complete silence. All parameters are assignable to any of the PC361's real time controllers - sliders, pedals, wheels, etc.
Sequencer...

The PC361 features a newly designed sequencer, with unlimited tracks and 960 PPQ resolution. Combining a set of powerful song editing functions like event editing, swing, and controller scaling with a new friendlier interface, the PC361 truly excels as a song writing/arranging workstation, ideal for music production on the fly. Chasing controls, input quantizing and a global "set song length" function are just a couple of the features we've incorporated.
Arpeggiators & Riffs...

The PC361 sports sixteen (yes, 16!) independent, fully programmable arpeggiators featuring 48-step programmable, pattern generators with both pitch and velocity controls - per zone (allowing for up to 16 patterns to playback simultaneously). These are accompanied by a thorough collection of modes, scales and pre-programmed patterns to get your juices flowing.

If that wasn't enough, the PC3 offers sixteen unique "Riff" generators, which permit the triggering of MIDI sequenced phrases, beats, or even complete multi-track arrangments from notes on the keyboard and/or any on-board physical controller.

BLACET DIGITAL PATTERN GENERATOR

via this auction
"unique, one of a kind Blacet Digital Pattern Generator for a modular synthesizer system. A real piece of synthesizer history.

It was planned for production, but never made it: instead, John Blacet wrote an article about how to make the module as a kit in the then popular magazine Synapse. See
dpg1.jpg
dpg2.jpg

The DPG is basically the predecessor of the Blacet Binary zone BZ2300 Complex Control Voltage Generator. See http://www.blacet.com/BZ.html

This particular module was built as a prototype by John Blacet himself in the 1970’s, and served as the original for the article in Synapse. I know John built it, as I bought it directly from him years ago. This is not a production model, it's a hand made module on stripboard with a hand made front panel. Some functions are etched in the metal (see pics). This would be a truly unique addition to any modular system. It interfaces with mini jacks, though conversion to something like banana plugs wouldn't be difficult as they will fit on the same holes."

WOPR

iTunes:
WOPR - Tim Kemp
iOS Devices on eBay

"The Synthesiser comes with 2 interesting features. The first one is called Wribbon. "Wribbon" creates per-note pitch bend when your fingers move off keys, "Glissando" provides traditional, piano-style Glissandi. The second one is the Modulation module which links a synth component to a zone on the grid, then the number of living cell controls the parameters. There is no possibility to record your performance for the moment, but it is announced for the 1.2 version. WOPR is unique and its sound quality is really great. A Killer App!
WOPR is a mighty, 6-note polyphonic, stereophonic, twin oscillator, hairy-chested, medallion-wearing sonic pimp. Four waveforms plus noise; twin 24dB/oct low pass filters so fruity they're practically fermented; three assignable envelopes and a pair of delays form the ventricles of WOPR's throbbing heart. Unique modulation gives it a powerful brain, then the awesome full-width Wribbon keyboard provides the voice: pitch-perfect accuracy, with note-by-note free bending when your soul just has to soar. Modulation
A retro blast of classic 1970s computer science, Conway's Game of Life drives WOPR's modulation grid. Link a synth component to a zone on the grid, then the number of living cells controls the parameter. The progress of the game is linked to the tempo clock, one generation per beat. On WOPR's wrapped 16x16 grid, the Game of Life produces an uncountable myriad of regular, repeating patterns: perfect for rhythmic modulation.

Future releases
1.2 Audio copy
A mechanism to record, save and share audio clips created in WOPR. This is essential for using WOPR as part of a production made entirely on the iPad. Early January.
1.3 MIDI
Extended MIDI support, including clock sync, assigning custom controllers to any parameter and configuration options for more complex MIDI setups. March.
1.4 Presets

Yamaha announces KARMA Motif Software for PC and Mac

"Yamaha and Karma-Lab announces the development and release of KARMA Motif Software for PC and Mac. This new entry in the renowned developer’s line of software applications brings the award-winning and patented KARMA algorithmic music technology to the Yamaha Motif XS and Yamaha Motif XF platforms.

“This exciting new collaboration brings the power of KARMA to a completely new user base using the great sounds and features of the Yamaha Motif series,” said KARMA developer Stephen Kay, who will demonstrate the software at NAMM.

“This will add a whole new dimension to the Motif experience.” KARMA Motif debuts the new KARMA 3.0 technology with a host of new features including eight-track design (six KARMA Modules and two Keyboard Layers) per Performance, per-track Volume and Mute stored in each of the 32 Scenes and the ability to individually adjust the mix of all parts in each Scene.

Users are also able to control Velocity Response Curves by individually tailoring the velocity response for the left hand keyboard, the right hand keyboard, the input to KARMA from the keyboard, and the 16 Chord Triggers (pads), without editing the Motif's programs or songs. A Fill/Stop Feature allows for the use of one or more modules as a melodic or drum fill with the ability to stop and start other modules automatically.

The Advanced Stutter Feature lets users retrigger the entire groove at different rhythmic resolutions, from machine-gun stutters to slow triplet hits. It also features a real-time Master Transpose function, Chord Triggers that can activate pre-programmed chords, hits, sound effects and even the Motif's arps. And, with the new KARMA software, all of the buttons and sliders on the Motif's interface (in Remote Mode) can be used to trigger the Chord Triggers and Fills, the Stutter feature, Scene changes, Scene mixes and real-time algorithmic variations.

KARMA Motif's Performances use the Motif's Song/Mixing mode, where each of the 64 songs is a complete KARMA algorithmic music groove with a left hand and right hand zone for controlling KARMA and soloing on top of it. The Motif's arps are also integrated in many performances as additional elements that can be added via the 16 Chord Triggers. While in Song Mode, players are just one step away from recording their KARMA-created musical performances into the Motif's sequencer, or the output can be routed to any DAW for external sequencing.

Furthermore, a KARMA Performance can call up any Motif Voice, Performance, Song, Pattern, or Master slot when loading, so that KARMA can be used in any of the Motif's modes.

“KARMA is one of the most innovative and interactive music software programs ever developed,” said Athan Billias, Director of Marketing at Yamaha’s Pro Audio & Combo division. “Combined with the incredible variety of Motif arps and unique features, like real-time Loop remix, KARMA and Motif combine to create one of the most powerful music production platforms available today.”

KARMA Motif Software for PC and Mac ($199) is scheduled to be available directly from Karma-Lab in April 2011"

Akai Professional Announces Advance Keyboard Series

Published on Jan 12, 2015 AkaiProVideo

Update: Intro & Behind the Scenes video below added.

Akai Professional Advance Keyboards - Behind the Scenes

"Check out behind the scenes with PJ Morton (Maroon 5), Morgan Kibby (M83/White Sea), and Illan Rubin (Angels & Airwaves, Nine Inch Nails and The New Regime)."

"Artists can now load, play and control all their virtual instrument plugins directly from their keyboard. New keyboards deliver optimum hands-on performance features with seamless software integration for playing and controlling today’s hottest VST instruments and DAWs.

Cumberland, RI (January 12, 2015)—Akai Professional (akaipro.com), a leading manufacturer of keyboards for performers and recording artists, today announced the introduction of their Advance Keyboard series. Available in 25-, 49-, and 61-key sizes, the Advance 25, Advance 49, and Advance 61 provide unprecedented playability and advanced manipulation of any virtual instrument via an interactive, full-color display complemented by performance friendly hardware controls.

Designed to fuse the power of software instruments with the live playability of a keyboard workstation, the Advance Keyboard series transforms computer-based plugins into an entirely hands-on playing experience. The keyboard surface features an integrated high-resolution full-color 4.3-inch display, providing real-time control and feedback of any and all virtual instrument parameters. The screen instantly adapts itself to the selected plugin’s controls, delivering immediate 1:1 access to the instrument and various editable functions. Better yet, the Advance Keyboard series works with any VSTi virtual instrument. Using the Advance keyboard’s custom designed Virtual Instrument Player (VIP) software application, your entire VSTi library can be controlled in one application. VIP operates as a plugin inside any major digital audio workstation (DAW) or as a stand-alone application on both Mac and Windows operating systems.

Dedicated physical controls are thoughtfully included, with Akai Professional’s hallmark RGB backlit, velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads integrated into each keyboard surface. Rubberized pitch and modulation wheels deliver player-preferred note manipulation with highly musical action. Large, continuously-variable endless knobs invite frequent use, letting the user make parameter adjustments with granular or dramatic effect. A custom semi-weighted, velocity-sensitive keybed—another Akai Professional specialty—supports aftertouch, making it an elite keyboard for seasoned live performers and studio producers alike.

“The Advance Keyboard series represents a giant leap forward for keyboard players,” said Dan Gill, Product Manager for Akai Professional. “Until now, software-based instruments leaned heavily on computer interaction, which caused creative and logistical bottlenecks, especially during live performances. We’re combining the processing power of your computer, the flexibility of your virtual instrument collection, and the hands-on immediacy of a traditional keyboard workstation. The result is a powerful and inspiring user experience.”

Included with each Advance Keyboard is the Virtual Instrument Player (VIP) application. VIP gives Advance Keyboard users access to any virtual instrument in their collection with or without a DAW—a powerful way to play virtual instruments live or integrate them into a recording session. VIP software users can also create setlists that provide on-demand access to user-curated instruments for stage performance and studio work. With a single button press on an Advance Keyboard, the player can adapt to song changes as the live performance progresses—without ever reaching for the computer. Performers of all types will welcome VIP’s facilities for hyper-fast instrument and patch browsing, key zone splitting, layering of up to 8 instruments per VIP instance, expansive custom mapping capabilities, and support for any VSTi plugin. Advance Keyboard users may run as many instances of the Virtual Instrument Player as their computer allows. VIP runs as a VSTi, AU, RTAS or AAX plugin, allowing you access to VSTi's in virtually any DAW, such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro X and Ableton Live.

Gill continues, “Keyboard players have been straddling two worlds for the better part of the decade. A standalone keyboard workstation was only as current as the sounds inside of it, and similarly, virtual instruments were only as good as the best controllers. The Advance Keyboard series delivers uninhibited access to any virtual instrument in your library without losing focus of the instrument in front of you.”

Each Advance Keyboard ships with a 16GB download of over 10,000 sounds from industry-leading developers at AIR Music Technology, SONiVOX, and Prime Loops. Purchased separately, this comprehensive collection of nine plugins is valued at over $1,000.00 USD and provides Advance Keyboard owners with an instant palette of contemporary and coveted sounds for live performance and studio production.

Fairlight's New Xynergi Controller

"Originating from the Greek word sunergia, meaning "cooperation," and also sunergos, meaning "working together") It is the combined working together of two or more parts of a system so that the combined effect is greater than the sum of the efforts of the parts.

We are introducing the Xynergi Controller, the first truly ‘application aware’ controller. In essence, Xynergi harnesses the power of the CC-1 card to deliver one of the world’s most powerful desktop media production centre.

The Xynergi controller features a unique implementation of self-labelling key switches which are able to display full colour images, animated icons or text to provide intelligent control over the entire recording, editing and mixing process. In addition, the controller can support any type of language or icon driven menu structure with an ‘on-demand’ QWERTY keyboard for routine naming tasks and immediate access to Windows applications. The controller also features eight touch sensitive rotary controllers and multiple soft keys arranged around a high–res color control zone known as the 'pad'."
