Multivox CB-50

via this auction, via Inverse Room
"Multivox CB-50 "Digital Chorus Box." This thing is very uncommon, so much so that I couldn't find a single reference to it anywhere online. It's a fairly basic solid-state analog delay, coupled with a chorus (you can only use one at a time), and is essentially a copy of the Roland DC-50 "Digital" Chorus. Stock, this thing has no delay time knob--it's ordinarily a fixed slapback. But I modded it, replacing a trimpot inside the unit with a panel-mounted knob (pictured) that does indeed allow you to adjust delay time. You can do it on the fly, creating the customary portamento-type sounds. Max delay time now seems to be around 300ms. The echoes fade out in a lowpassy way like every good delay. The intensity does not oscillate in its stock form, but I adjusted another trimpot inside the unit, and it does indeed now feed back and oscillate very satisfyingly. Chorus is pretty good--there is only an "intensity" knob, so it isn't hugely versatile, but it IS a modulated chorus, not a simple doubling effect. The echo intensity knob also seems to have some effect on it--perhaps on the LFO speed? In any event, it's a good sounding analog chorus, very much a Roland-style ensemble effect. I don't think the knobs are original, but they're like new."

"What is your current favorite piece of hardware?
Nord Modular G2. I haven't found a synth that better suits the type of music that I do. The knob setup, the build quality and the software editor are the best that i've seen. I use the Nord a lot to do the things that i don't want to manually do, such as random sequenced bleeps and arpeggiations. The ability to improvise with it while performing is a huge thing also."

KL-Module

"Hybrid Module für analoge Modulsynthesizer"
click here for the product page in German.

Here's the content in Googlish:
"The K311 A is the main module of the K311 series.

In the upper area (inputs) are the four inputs A - D associated with the LED. The input signals are applied to the states or HIGH LOW. As signals are LOW 0 volts to about +2 volts (or negative stresses). HIGH tensions are from about +4 volts. The area between +2 volts and +4 volts is not precisely defined. Generally, the input voltages modular systems in the usual range of -15 volts to +15 volts not.

In the middle part (Analysis), the LED outputs and the various logical operations are assigned. If the condition is true, the LED and the socket is +5 volts. In particular:

A OR B One of the inputs A or B must be HIGH.
A B XOR One and only one of the inputs A or B must be HIGH.
A AND B Both A and B inputs must be HIGH
D C OR One of the inputs must be C or D HIGH.
C D XOR One and only one of the entrances C or D must be HIGH.
C AND D inputs Both C and D must be HIGH

In the lower area is a logic inverter, the input signal to HIGH LOW or HIGH LOW for converts. The work is a way other than in an analog inverter.

The Trollogy: A Tale in Several Parts

via appliancide:
"These tracks should be listened to loud in a dark room. Parts 1 and 2 are just modular synth being tweaked as it plays with no overdubs. Part 3 is a mix of some old unfinished stuff remixed for the Trollogy concept. The creepy main hook was done with an old version of Reaktor and rest is manipulated samples."

Anyone know more about this one? SYNLAB?

Update: some audio on KlangBureau (look for Synlab FM bits). Some notes via the AH archives:

“Again from the nord modular list, this might be of interest to everyone. Pics of the synlab and closeups of some modules can be found here. Looks like a nice copy of the arp 2500 design with many more types of modules and more features per module. Very impressive indeed! And from what i've read, it fills an entire room and it cost about 350,000 to build back in the day.”

“SYNLAB - big-as-a-house modular. Rare as hen's teeth. 'Probably the most impressive synthesiser ever made'”

"just read the book again [A-Z of Analogue Synths] and it wasn't that studio at

Sounds vom Synthesizer

via swissdoc:
"'Sounds vom Synthesizer' was a radio show from the German station HR3 (Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt). It was aired every two weeks from January 1983 to December 1986. The show was moderated first by Volkmar Krammarz and later by Rainer Sauer.

The show presented music made with synthesizers, run interviews with artists in the studio in Frankfurt (i.e. Propaganda, Klaus Schulze, Jean-Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Howard Jones, Michael Rother, Ash Ra Tempel, Kraftwerk, Art of Noise or Spliff to name a few).

In addition specials like the regular series 'Per Anhalter durch die Synthesizergeschichte' (The Hitchhiker's Guide to Synth History), 'We are Producers' or the 'Electronic Poll' (Reader Poll) have been part of the show.

Even synth tests or reports from Musikmesse FFM have been sent in the later shows, Equipment rangin from Kurzweil K250 to sampler cards for C64 or Apple ][.

Rainer Sauer is working these days for Radio Jena, where the old series is aired again every Saturday. Under the name 'Synthesizer Studio' it is available as a online stream from Webradio ZONO.

http://www.mynewradio.de/html/programm.html

Shows are sent in random order every night in the time from 00:00 to 04:00 MESZ (MESZ = UTC + 2h). Times are indicative, the timing is not really strict. There may be up to 3 shows during one night, but in some cases no show is sent.

The streaming URL (128 kbit mp3) is http://zono01.host01-he.comc.name:8000 [Open this one in a streaming player like Winamp AND read this full post for when to listen].

Later Rainer Sauer was organising from 1986 till 1989 the Frankfurter Synthesizertage titled 'White Waves', recording of live concerts are aired via Webradio ZONO as well under the same streaming URL later.

RIP: Morgan Sparks, transistor inventor

via Boing Boing

"Stephanie Holinka of Sandia National Laboratories tells Boing Boing,

'We are sad to report the death of former Sandia Labs Director Morgan Sparks. He's best known as the Bell Labs researcher who invented the first practical transistor. His work made possible so many other inventions. Without transistors, one cannot begin to imagine personal computers, cell phones, DVD players and the many other electronic devices we rely on daily. His contributions are pretty humbling to mere English majors like me.'"

A Long While

YouTube via FalgorOne
"disclaimer: (with the lyrics, you can sing karaoke! YEAH!)

Ok, first of all, don't take this *too* seriously, it's still just a synth ;).
What is serious about this all, is the long waiting that many have gone through.
And this song is dedicated to those people. What you are waiting *for* isn't so important in this case.

Long story short:
Kurzweil PC3(x) was supposed to first be released on summer 2007, but things developed so the estimated release date was pushed back many times. In my opinion, when I _now_ think about it, it was a good thing. The synthesizer got greater in that time of delay.

However, it was delayed many times and many people waited (and some are still waiting, like me) for their pre-orders a long time. Anyhow, now it has been released and many people have got it. It sounds awesome, from what I have heard of the user demos, and it sure seems it has been worth the wait ^_^.

The wait was very long and personally my order was delayed many times (now 3 months waiting time), and on the last time I decided I'd DO something about it (instead of just complaining ;), so I started writing this song about the whole waiting process and everything. In about 2 weeks, after working on it a bit almost every day, I got it finished.

I sang the vocals during the night between 11pm and 8am (Sat-Sun). I'm now actually happy it was delayed, since I got to write this song, and I would've been distracted from some important work had I got it sooner. So, at the end of the day, I am thankful :). It's all right.

Enjoy my high and tender singing ;)!
and be sure to check this baby out if you just can! I think you're gonna like what you hear ^_^!

And stay tuned for some videodemos!"
