"Join me as we enjoy the Fairlight CMI sample library. The newly released Arturia CMI V includes 600 presets from the original CMI library, let's see if we can find and play some highlight sounds.

In 1980, the Fairlight CMI turned heads with the introduction of digital sampling. It was an expensive instrument, if memory serves me right about $100,000. It helped define the sound of the 80s. Now you can get this sound in a VST plugin, thanks to the newly released Arturia CMI V, part of the Arturial V Collection 6.

Hope you enjoy my demo slash tutorial of this plugin. I did."

The MCS 70 - Memory Controlled Synthesizer From Elka's Mario Maggi

via Francesco Mulassano

"Ultra rare italian synthesizers, made by Mario Maggi (the man who invented the Elka Synthex). This unit belongs to Patrizio Fariselli from Area!"

Apparently only three were made. It is monophonic.

The following are some details via synthmuseum.com from the MCS 70 brochure:

"FEATURES:

Memorizes all parameters of all user-defined control panel settings

Groups of up to 64 memorized settings available at any one time

Instantaneous change time from one memorized sound to any other

Non-volatile integrated circuit memory modules, no tape, nothing mechanical

No loss of user's memorized sounds, even unplugged or with module removed, until user himself memorizes a new sound.

It's called Integrated Memory Control. The result is the first completely programmable electronic music synthesizer. The programs are the user's own sounds set up with the front panel parameter controls.

The MCS 70 Memory Controlled Synthesizer represents a new concept in total integration of analog and digital operating systems allowing complete digital memorization of all parameters of the signal generating and processing modules.

Operating in the Panel mode, the audio result is determined directly by the variable panel controls. In the Memory mode the audio is determined by the previously defined and memorized panel settings.

A sound is memorized simply by pushing a button which cuases a digital code corresponding to the parameter control positions to be stored at the selected address (one of 64) of the memory modules.

Any sound may be instantaneously (5 milliseconds) recalled, even years later, after memorization, by pushing the corresponding memory address button.

Two memory modules each with a capacity of 32 programmable settings, are inserted in the rear of the instrument. Removing the module or unplugging the instrument has no effect on the contents of the memory. No setting is ever lost until the user decides to change the program at a given address. There is virtually no limit to the number of times the same address may be re-programmed.

Each module can be quickly removed and substituted by another containing 32 entirely different programs. Several sets of programs can be used, for example, during a concert. Each song can have its own characteristic sounds. There is no set-up time delay, and the performer can even change sound instantly in mid-phrase.

Toy keyboard Christmas demos - Yamaha PSS-190 - Silent night

Published on Dec 25, 2017 organfairy

"It has been a while since I have played the smaller items of my humble organ and keyboard collection. But this time I will let some of them play all by themselfes.

I have noticed that often toy keyboards have at least one Christmas song on their repertoire of demo melodies. This is probably because in the 1980s and 1990s many of them were given as Christmas presents.

But since Christmas is here once again, I will play (if you can call pressing a button that says 'DEMO' playing) some of the Christmas demos that my toy keyboards are capable of playing. The first one is a Yamaha PSS-190 that plays 'Silent Night'."

Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Here are a few pics of the MATRIXSYNTH Christmas tree. You should be able to spot a few synths. :)

I hope everyone is having a great holiday season. I want to thank all of you for making the site what it is, and I want to give huge shout out to supporters of the site. You make the site possible. We live in a great time for synths. I like to think this site helps spread the word on our amazing world. Merry Synthmas!

---

As far as what's on the tree: you should spot a Minimoog complete with manual, a vintage Moog Model 1P 5U modular system, and a new 5U Synthesizers.com system. The Minimoog and Model 1P were from microscopics as part of a promo for their gas0095 and High Skies releases years ago. The image used for the Model 1P actually comes from Tone Tweakers. It is quite possible it is actually this one for sale. Update: I heard back from Tone Tweakers. It looks like the one currently for sale is a different one.

3 Merry Modules #38: Tides, Clouds, Ears

Published on Dec 24, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"Happy droning holidays to all! I hope you're enjoying the day with your loved ones. And even if you don't celebrate Foodmas, there's hopefully nothing stopping you from enjoying some modular synthesis this winter morning! :)

Patch notes:
I'm playing a sample from a completely randomly chosen song through Ears and into Clouds, while using the envelope follower and threshold gate signal generated from the sample to control the patch. I'm using Tides as a typical LFO to scrub back and forth through Clouds' buffer by way of the Position parameter, shuffling the input around somewhat.

The gate signal from Ears enables Clouds' winter themed freeze. As the sample reaches its crescendo, the buffer is frozen and held until the levels recede. However, the Position modulation keeps the frozen buffer from sounding static. Ears' envelope follower is patched to Tides' level, so the louder parts (i.e. when freeze is engaged) have the greatest modulation range – the most movement of buffer playback position, in other words.

You may notice that I have Clouds' Pitch turned up fairly high. This is because the sample itself is played back at a much slower than natural rate and is consequently pitched down, so I'm compensating for some of that pitch drop in the granular playback.

Thanks for watching!"

h0nh1m X COLLECTIVE - Haptic Organ

Published on Dec 23, 2017 h0nh1m

"The latest interactive installation by h0nh1m (Chris Cheung), a new media / sound artist (previously led his studio XEX to create Prismverse) and COLLECTIVE, an international award winning architecture design studio, is an reinterpretation of various musical instruments juxtapose with each other in its form, visual feedback and interactive engagement.

Haptic Organ - commissioned by Fashion Walk
Project link: http://h0nh1m.com/haptic-organ/

‘Haptic’ originates from the greek word ‘haptikos’: any sort of information received through touch is haptic, as it appears in this installation, it is based on kinesthetic (expressing force or position) communication, in which the motion of the hand initiates visual displays and sound variations, thus allowing audiences to receive familiar feedbacks to learn how to operate the installation as an instrument.

The creative duo COLLECTIVE and h0nh1m designed Haptic Organ with an intention to make music tangible, visible, sharable among each other to encourage group interactive moments in celebration of the Christmas season.

It is in the form of a 4-meter tall spiraling instrument with the recognizable elements of the strings; music notes are prompted with the aid of the non-contact haptic interface that detects hands movement in the air, while each of the 20 transparent tubes, like a pipe organ, wrap round the spiral, each encased with a metallic ball which rises up and down, dancing inside the tube through initiated air movement by hand motion; users received the visual feedback of dancing balls and can freely improvise his or her music with the aid of eight sensors giving eight notes across an octave, in addition to four that gives tones of musical instruments like strings, woodwinds, harps and sleigh bells, with volume controllable with ascending and descending movements of the hands over the haptic interfaces.

h0nh1m creates the music as a blessing for joy and peace in the Christmas season. Borrowing the melody of ‘Happy Christmas (War is Over)’ written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, it was a work of peace activism, looking towards for peace, equality, the end of wars and discrimination.

"100% functional and in EXCELLENT physical condition! This synth has only light signs of use, with only a few very subtle surface markings/scratches, most of which are hardly noticeable. Overall it's super clean! The receiving nut for the top/right hex screw that holds the wood end cap in place was broken off and missing, so we epoxied a replacement in place. We did our best to align it with the screw, however in doing so, it made it so the upper/middle hex screw does not quite align with it's nut. We thought it was best to have the top/right screw in place, so the middle/center screw is not installed (although we do have it to include in the sale) --- see 2nd to last photo. Comes with upgraded hard drive, original box (as well as the original outer shipping box), original manual, original Hartmann USB-to-Ethernet Adapter, and Hartmann Neuron Sound in Motion DVD (contains interviews with Axel Hartmann, Hans Zimmer, plus more).
