A previous one was posted here.

"Forget all those other Omni 2s- that are cheaper- here is one of the ultimate ones - a great buy that is both working and is climbing in value owing to the Omni 2 collection it came from- here we have one of Martin Hannett's 1970s Arp Omni 2's from his actual cache /collection of synths, Hannett's Omni 2s along with his Transcendent's were the main models of synths he took from his collection to take in the studio with bands like Joy Division,( Omni 2s were used on Unknown Pleasures) Magazine, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Nico, John Coooper Clarke, Pauline Murray and loads of other bands he produced and often overlayed synth tracks on.

This is one of the rarer of his Omni 2 collection as Hannett fitted it with wooden end cheeks. It has been fully serviced and is fully working and comes with a brand new heavy duty flight case- it is a 240 volt model

you will never really find synths with more history than Hannett's collection

will ship anywhere in the world"

Self Generative Modular

Self Generative Modular #2 from Kial on Vimeo.

"Late night, self-generative patch with some wiggling thrown in for good measure. Here, an LFO from the RS-80 is being quantized by the Disting, while also controlling some other parameters, like the Fold amount. An LFO from the EON is being used to control the RS-80s rate, there is a lot of feedback between the CVs on each module. Therefore, changing the rate of 1 LFO has a large effect on the system."

Self Generative Modular from Kial on Vimeo.

"Finally got some white noise in my Eurorack system, thanks to Qu-Bit's EON, and was able to make my first self generative patch.

This patch utilizes the white noise mode on Qu-Bit's EON, white noise is sent to ES Disting in 'Quantize' mode. Quantization is being gated by Animodule's TikTok (which also sends a slower pulse to the VCA you hear opening) The Disting out 'A' is sent to Dixie's 1v/oct in. Dixie's sine out--->uFold In. With EON random trigger being sent to Fold CV. uFold--->uVCA--->uJack--->Digitech's Polara--->MOTU 896HD.

The pulse you hear at the end is the 'zig-zag' out of the Dixie--->DSM01 Curtis Filter (filter CV modulated by Tiptop Audio Z4000)--->uVCA--->uJack"

Roland Interview with the Developers of the Original JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, and JX-3P

The interview is currently on Roland's site here. The text is captured below for the archives.

"WHAT ARE YOUR HONEST OPINIONS REGARDING THE ROLAND BOUTIQUE SERIES? AS DEVELOPERS OF THE ORIGINAL PRODUCTS, WHAT WERE YOUR IMPRESSIONS WHEN YOU HEARD ABOUT THE MODERN RECREATIONS?

Takahashi:I'd heard about this product series rather early on thanks to my position at the company, and my honest feeling about it was that I was excited. I was truly excited at the prospect of a simulation being released of a product that I was involved with decades ago. Synthesizers from those days have a unique feel that you can only get on analog, so I was interested in seeing how much of that could be reproduced in the digital realm. I knew that the Roland Boutique series development team was working on this very seriously. More than being intrigued, I was truly very excited.

Matsui:I'm no longer with the company, so I hadn't heard about this until very recently when someone mentioned, "We're working on this project relating to the JX-3P." Honestly, I was very happy to hear that. I was very happy to hear that Roland will be releasing a product that I had a part in developing in the past in a new form. That's because the JX-3P was a very special product for me.

DO YOU HAVE ANY INTERESTING MEMORIES RELATING TO THE JX-3P?

Matsui:That synth was developed at Roland's Matsumoto factory. I was working at Matsumoto at the time and was involved in guitar synth development. Guitar synths up to the GR-300 and GR-100 were based on converting pitch into a CV (Control Voltage) signal, which would then trigger an analog synth. But for the next generation of guitar synths, we decided to use a design where pitch would be converted to MIDI, which would then control the sound engine digitally (though the sound engine itself would still be analog). We studied how guitarists were using the GR-300 and GR-100 and realized that they didn't do much sound creation on their own. (Laughs.) So if that was the case, we decided to go with an easy-to-use synth with presets. And this was the start of the GR-700 project.

The [GR-700] would feature a built-in pitch-to-MIDI converter and a sound engine with presets. But even if this was to be a preset synth, it would still be too difficult to create sounds without any knob controls. So we made a programmer—solely for development purposes—with which we could adjust the tones. Sometime later in the development process, one of our superiors remarked, "You can attach a keyboard to that and make a polyphonic synth out of it, can't you?" [Laughs.] So that's how the JX-3P came about. The reason it's a six-voice polyphonic synth is because it started out as a sound engine for guitar synths, guitar being a six-string instrument. (Laughs.)

Roland Interview with the Developers of the Boutique Line of Synthesizers

The interview is currently on Roland's site here. The text is captured below for the archives.

"WHAT WAS THE STARTING POINT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ROLAND BOUTIQUE SERIES?

Tojo:Our starting point was that we wanted to create a full-fledged synth in a compact form factor; something that might look like a gadget at first glance, but was capable of producing amazing sounds. We wanted to create a synth that people could casually enjoy, came with a built-in speaker, and could also run on batteries. Since we had the ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) modeling technology that was developed for AIRA and a mini keyboard that was first incorporated in the JD-Xi, we thought that we could make something interesting by combining these two. That was around the end of last year, and actual development began in around January this year.

WERE YOU PLAYING WITH THE IDEA OF BASING THIS SERIES ON SYNTH CLASSICS RIGHT FROM THE OUTSET?

Tojo:Yes, we were. We wanted to combine ACB and the mini keyboard to reproduce classics that everyone was familiar with. The JUPITER-8 and JUNO-106 were candidates right from the start, since these synths are still very popular today. We wanted to add another synth to the lineup, so we decided to go with the JX-3P, which produces different types of sounds from either the JUPITER or JUNO. We reached the decision to go with these three synths rather quickly, without much debate.

Haruo Yamashita's Vintage DIY Modular Featured at the 2015 Japanese Analog Synth Builders' Summit

This year's ASBS15 event was held on Saturday, November 28.  You'll find pics of the event here and here.  Of particular interest was a vintage DIY Modular by Haruo Yamashita.  This is actually the first post on MATRIXSYNTH to feature the system. The links below will take you to more info.

via Sam Hoshuyama who attended the event:

"The greatest thing this year was a booth displaying the original modular synth of the legendary SDIY papers published in 1977 by Haruo Yamashita.  They were issued as a series of magazine articles, and have been a legend for 30 years. They were recently published in November as a book with a new description and new schematics using modern components. The booth was invited after the publication.  You can find Yamashita's site here." [Googlish translation here]

via the seller: "I’m the sole owner of this cool synthesizer module, i got it brand new when it was current (probably around 2001-2003) and used it lightly since then. This is my 2nd unit and i mostly used the other one. Never gigged, only used in my non smoking home. I always was very gentle with it. It has the latest OS (1.11 R34) on it.

It’s a very nice synth with a unique sound, the filter distorts in a non linear way that i have not heard any software imitation emulate.

No visible scratches on it, all knobs feel smooth and buttons are all responsive as they should. It’s not brand new but it is in mint condition.

The unit works very well but please be aware that sometimes after using it for many hours, it turned silent. I had to switch it off and on again. It did this a few times when i was using it a while ago but i could not reproduce it when i tested it for 90 minutes before packing it. It could happen again or it could be a bug that occurred under my specific use case.

It is complete with original 120 volts power adapter, box, manual and there’s still the registration sheet with it."

Architecture of Radio for iOS

architectureofradio from R Vijgen on Vimeo.

Thought this was pretty cool. Not technically a synth or music app, but it does appear to produce audio. Looks fun and can be used for background audio or mangling with effects. Could also make for interesting visuals during a live performance.

iTunes: Architecture of Radio - Richard Vijgen

"The infosphere, Visualized.

Every time we use our phones, tablets or laptops we are entering an invisible world of wireless digital signals. It is a world that we cannot see but that is literally all around us.
The Architecture of Radio is a 360 degree data visualization of what this world might look like. It shows the cell towers, GPS satellites and Wi-Fi routers around you that allow us to live our digital lives.

NOTE: If the app takes longer than a few seconds to load please check if location services (GPS) is enabled and the device is connected to the internet.

Why should I use this app?

Out of curiosity! We are increasingly dependent on a global ecosystem of digital signals. We use them for so many things, yet we cannot see them. We can see the roads we use to travel, the buildings we live in, but not the infrastructure that is changing the world. How can we understand this world without understanding how it works?
The purpose of this app is to make the invisible visible so we can look at it, think about it and discuss it.

Why Should I not use this app?

This app is not a measurement tool. It’s purpose is to inspire, to see the world through a different lens. The app is based on real world data and gives you a pretty good idea of the density of digital signals around you, but it won’t tell you where to move the couch to get a better WIFI signal.

So how does it work?

The Architecture of Radio is a data visualization, based on global open datasets of cell tower, Wi-Fi and satellite locations. Based on your GPS location the app shows a 360 degree visualization of signals around you. The dataset includes almost 7 million cell towers, 19 million Wi-Fi routers and hundreds of satellites.

Is this really what radio signals look like?

We can’t see radio with our eyes. The waves that we use for our cell phones and Wi-Fi are way outside the spectrum of visible light. In order to “see” radio, it has to be interpreted or translated into an image that we can see. There are many ways to do that but it will always be an interpretation.

The Architecture of Radio is an impression of the infosphere, a way of seeing it."

Kilpatrick CARBON Sequencer Review

VENNDIAGRAM sent in a link to his thoughts on the upcoming Kilpatrick CARBON sequencer which is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.

The following is the quick intro. You'll find the link to the full review below.

"Perhaps I can help clarify what it is and what it isn't for a few of you. The development unit has been in my studio for several days. Excellent and solid build quality with a well machined steel body and knobs, flimsy this is not with a lovely and crisp LCD display to boot.

The sequencer does much more than one would expect with six tracks. Any track can access any two outputs at once from a selection of USB Midi, Mid A, Midi B and the CV & Gate outputs. Keep in mind that the software running the machine is not finished yet but it is perfectly useable and I had it on for around 6 hours straight yesterday with no crashing, lock ups or unusual issues with the implemented features as they stand."

New Renders & Technical Drawing of the Upcoming 20 Electronics ECHT Hardware Synthesizer

You might remember the 20 Electronics ECHT coming from Axel Hartmann, the man behind many physical synthesizer designs and his own Hartmann Neuron. Here are a few new renders and a technical drawing from them. Only 20 will be produced in black and 20 in silver. See here for additional details.

"Late yesterday, our mechanical engineer Stephan Gries has released a set of technical drawings for the manufacturer. What you see here, is the main drawing, where all major parts are being described. More then 30 detail drawings show all bits and pieces of the mechanical setup. For me, these drawings almost look like art. From my experience I can say, that if the technical drawings look right and appealing, the product later on will also match this approach. What a piece of work; - I am so glad, we have Stephan here in house for more then 4 years now - he is a great engineer and a maniac of detail work."

The event was casual throughout with lots of chat, questions and trying out things together through the evening.

Here's a little jam we had at the end of the night.

Everything was caught on a single camcorder up above each case. We chose not to set up a second camera pointing at the people presenting as we wanted to create a casual event where people could play around and touch things and not potentially feel awkward with a camera right in their face. Audio was captured on a Zoom H4n.
