"This amazing unit is one of Doepfer's earliest synth modules. It uses a 3 phase LFO which drives 3 separate phase shift cards (see pictures). The module has separate 'fb.' and 'mod' controls and 'control' and 'ext. ust' sockets for each of the 3 phasers, and has controls for 'f1', 'f2', 'mixt' and 'ampl'. There are also 5 LEDs and sockets for output and input signals. Finally there are two switches which are labelled 'ser.' and 'parallel'. The module was designed as part of the "Formant Modular" format and is labelled on the front panel 'dd-system'."

Benge Abstraxa - All Buchla Release

"Abstraxa - exploring the outer reaches, using the Buchla Electronic Music Box

The six compositions featured on Abstraxa were realised on a Buchla modular synthesiser. Donald Buchla began makng electronic musical instruments in 1963, developing the first Buchla 100 series systems in conjunction with the San Francisco Tape Music Center. These first inventions coincided with the development of Robert Moog's 900 Series modular systems over on the west coast of america, and as such belong to the very first generation of commercially available synthesisers. One intersting aspect is that Don Buchla is still developing and manufacturing his modular systems, using the same module format (now 200e series) that he introduced 50 years ago. The current 200e modules utilise a combination of analogue and digital components

The Buchla has a very unique way of producing sound, using electronic voltages to control the sound sources (oscillators and noise generators), sound modifiers (gates, filters, phase shifters, modulators, etc) and event timing generators (sequencers, random sources, pulse generators, etc). Systems can be built up from the available modules to suit the needs of the composer. The power of the system lies in the inter-modulation capabilities. This means that extremely deep patches can be set up with a myriad of connections interacting together in complex ways to produce evolving and self-generating soundscapes. It is anagolous to working with a living organism as opposed to a static machine, a brain rather than a computer

The pieces presented here were recorded to tape using overdubbing in places. Additional reverberation and delay lines were also incorporated into the system. See below for a full module list

technical details are:

the plug and perform simplicity of our stand-alone triple six synth has been carefully distilled into eurorack format by hirsute hands.

we designed a single module as powerful as an expensive array of traditional vco/vcf/vca modules patched together. while no compromise to the true spirit of the original circuit was afforded we worked especially hard to make this one of the most compatible eurorack instruments available with a generous array of 9 distinct control voltage inputs:

- two cv ins = frequencies of twin oscillators
- one cv in = threshold (osc. variant/gate/selection/etc.)
- four cv ins = twin amplifiers (distortion/secondary osc.)
- one cv in = new signal shape parameter (filter function)
- one cv in = for output drive parameter
- plus audio input (for unique modulation and triggering).

into the bargain are an additional three new controls, shape-knob & patch-knob / threeway switch, which make our most flexible circuit even more so.

in essence it is quite possible that this one module alone, placed under the control of up to 9 separate sequenced cv channels, could sound like someone slipped a c4 charge into tonto's "expanding headband".

RIP Davy Jones

Davy Jones passed away this morning from a heart attack. The Monkees were one of the first groups to use a Moog modular. They are credited as the first pop band to use one in their 1967 release "Daily Nightly" below. Although the system was purchased by Mickey Dolenz, you can see Davy spent some time with it. That's him to the left of Mickey. See Moog - Early Days in Rock for reference. via Micke (different Mickey, no y) in that post: "Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees bought one of the very first IIIP's (oak cabinets) in sep '67 so he might have used that system on The Notorious Byrd Brothers.I reckon this is the synth he plays in the Daily Nightly video"

Robot Quadrotors Perform James Bond Theme

"Flying robot quadrotors perform the James Bond Theme by playing various instruments including the keyboard, drums and maracas, a cymbal, and the debut of an adapted guitar built from a couch frame. The quadrotors play this "couch guitar" by flying over guitar strings stretched across a couch frame; plucking the strings with a stiff wire attached to the base of the quadrotor. A special microphone attached to the frame records the notes made by the "couch guitar".

These flying quadrotors are completely autonomous, meaning humans are not controlling them; rather they are controlled by a computer programed with instructions to play the instruments.

Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science is home to some of the most innovative robotics research on the planet, much of it coming out of the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab.

This video premiered at the TED2012 Conference in Long Beach, California on February 29, 2012. Deputy Dean for Education and GRASP lab member Vijay Kumar presented some of this groundbreaking work at the TED2012 conference, an international gathering of people and ideas from technology, entertainment, and design.

The engineers from Penn, Daniel Mellinger and Alex Kushleyev, have formed a company called KMel Robotics that will design and market these quadrotors.

Virtual MIDI is a local communications channel for passing around MIDI messages like "C# 1, Velocity 127", or "Modulation, 50" - simple messages that control how a synthesizer should generate audio.

Audiobus is a local (and network) communications channel for sending live audio, like the audible output of a synthesizer app, or the output of a guitar amp effects app, for example.

More than that, Audiobus is also a multi-track recorder and content creation platfom, allowing you to record and mix the output of several apps all at once, and then publish the result.

C64 Fastfingers Lead Synthesizer Lightshow and Drums !

"This is a video using the Fastfingers Lead Synthesizer software for Commodore 64 and my drumming. I added a new Lightshow feature to Fastfingers, which changes the color of the screen in time with the music.

All of the sounds are C64 Fastfingers sounds except for my drumming."

Update via Dan in the comments: "Today I began BASIC MIDI routines with the C64 Expansion Port Sentech/Passport type MIDI interface, mostly to check my MIDI interface and also to re-familiarize myself with the MIDI commands. I was able to get my Kawai K3 to play a slew of notes which I sent to it by way of a fornext loop. So the MIDI programming re-begins..after almost 30 years. So hopefully I will be able to integrate this into Fastfingers. This in only HALF of the BASIC programming. The other HALF is to also RECEIVE notes from a MIDI keyboard to trigger the Fastfingers sounds.

The PASSPORT type MIDI interface was the most popular, and it is not easy to make a universal MIDI driver because of the way the DATA and CONTROL/STATUS registers work. There is only ONE STATUS register on the PASSPORT and the same register is also the CONTROL register. Many other MIDI interfaces will use 2 separate registers for STATUS AND CONTROL. The same goes with the DATA register. It also flips so that it can be a READ or WRITE register.

So what I'm basically saying, is to start shopping for a PASSPORT type MIDI interface if you plan on using Fastfingers , in the future, with MIDI.

"'Digital Enhancement' is an interactive sound installation consisting of an electrified Symphonion Brevet No. 28, a synthesizer, an amplifier and four headphones. The Symphonion musical box dates back to the beginning of the last century and its mechanical workings are combined with digital technology to convert it into a MIDI sequencer. The original music, embossed on steel plates, can be played on the synthesizer, which is programmed to mimic the sounds of the Symphonion. In order to operate the sequencer, a hand-cranked dynamo serves as a remote control.

"Joe Goddard founded Hot Chip along with Alexis Taylor back in 2000, but as we learn during this interview shot in Joe's home studio in London, the roots of the band that became Hot Chip started long before that. Goddard most recently released an album as 'The 2 Bears', working with friend and DJ Raf Rundell, and much of their music and remixes as The 2 Bears and originated in that very room.

About a year ago, Goddard bought a pair of Genelec 8250 Bi-Amplified DSP Loudspeakers to improve his mixing capabilities at home. The 8250's feature a thing called AutoCal - the speakers adapt themselves to the acoustics of the room. The biggest benefit, as Joe outlines, is that AutoCal can work wonders on problem bass frequencies present in the room - something that is difficult to solve even with acoustic treatment. Source Distribution's Genelec specialist Steve Fisher visited Joe's studio and calibrated the 8250's - we think Joe says it best in terms of how his mixes improved after that.

The question was asked if the Moon Modular 569 Quad Sequential Step Sequencer can somehow have the timing of each row be different without using an eternal clock divider etc. The answer is YES, it IS possible by using one row's gate output to control another's row's tempo. In part two I show how turning different gates on and off on a row affect the timing of the rows below it.

The Fairlight Qasar

Top: "The Fairlight CMI was based on the architecture of the Qasar M8 (Multimode 8), created by Tony Furse in 1975. In the early 70's, Tony Furse created his first prototype of hybrid analog/digital synthesizer, the Qasar I."

Bottom: "In 1972-1973, Furse created his second prototype, the Qasar II, with the financial help of both the Federal Government of Australia and Don Banks, composer and director of the Canberra School of Electronic Music."

(c.1974) Also one of the first additive/wavetable machines was the PPG 340/380 System, around late 70's I think. Wavetable synthesis become famous and widely available by the PPG Wave series starting with the wavecomputer 360 (c.1979) Also don't forget the Crumar CDS.
