"The Minimoog is highly reputed for his classic lead or bass sounds, but it can also produce unusual and experimental sounds in frequency modulation mode. The basic patch is modulation wheel full open, oscillator modulation on, osc 3 control off. Best results are obtained with both the modulating and the 'slave' oscillator(s) range set to 4' and/or 2'."
Grain Science: Messing Around With A Mic by Wooji Juice
"So, a parcel arrived in the post the other day from IK Multimedia, with some of their gear inside to try out. I spent some time yesterday running around with the iMic plugged in, recording things I find around the office, and then turning them into instruments :)
I'm not a professional when it comes to miking stuff up, and this wasn't in a studio or anything like that. But I like the results a lot better than the built-in mic, and Grain Science has always stood out for the ways it allows you to synthesise based on captured audio. So it was fun putting that side of it to use with higher-quality sound.
These aren't designed to be presets, they're just me experimenting with different effects and seeing what variety of stuff I can make from a given recording. I've marked the original recordings on the timeline -- every sound, no matter how weird it sounds, is based on the same recording (until you reach the next marker)."

"This is my version of the Korgasmatron Dual VCF. This is a Korg MS20 style filter based on the 2164 chip, designed by David Dixon who very generously supplied me with hand etched pcbs. This is very similar to the Intellijel Corgasmatron filter, but without the cross fader and with several other differences."

"A Lake County man who collected electric organs was identified Monday as the victim of two-alarm fire that destroyed his mobile home on Sunday.
The body of Michael Fulk, 72, was found in the back bedroom of his home in a Lucerne mobile home park...
The mobile home was filled with electric organs and other items owned by Fulk, Deputy Fire Chief Pat Brown said. One room held a dozen of the musical instruments."
"Completely unknown to myself, or to the Hammond organ fans, Fulk had moved to a trailer in Lucerne, on the north shore of Clear Lake, several years ago. And, judging by this story, was probably barbecued by an electrical fire in one of his Hammond organs. The exits were blocked--by organs. Including two Novachords, I presume."
Hi all, Spring is coming to our part of the world and we are feverishly working to get out Soundplanes on schedule. So I'll keep this update short and sweet.
Soundplane News
I'm putting together 30 instruments in the shop with the help of my friend Christopher. Each day brings an interesting problem, like, how do you hold two very very sticky things that will grab at the merest touch in just the right positions for gluing, or, how do you make a jig for cutting out five hundred one inch plastic rods pretty quickly? Of course, there are solutions to these problems which are overkill and would take up way too much time. The hardest part can be picking a solution or system that's good enough, and leaving it at that. My neighbor in the shop has a sticker on the door that says "THINK" with the "no" sign around it like "no smoking" and so on. This advice is usually pretty sound. You can look to the website for some pictures of us getting our work on.
Aalto News
Meanwhile, I am working on Aalto 1.3. I'm trying to get in some of the most-requested features and a few important bug fixes. This update will include Soundplane support so that Soundplane owners have access to Aalto sounds right away. In other words, you'll be able to play the Aalto plugin directly from the Soundplane in addition to MIDI. For the data coming from the Soundplane client to Aalto, I'm using the TUIO 2 format with good results so far. I expect this decision to stick through the shipping version, which means that not only will Soundplane users be able to play Aalto over OSC, but anyone using TUIO 2 for touch data, which will probably include Reactable, makers of homebrew touch screens, and other things I haven't heard of yet.

"Mint Korg Ms-20 Monophonic analog synthesizer. It is fully functional and is in absolutely incredible cosmetic condition for its age; The nicest I've ever seen. Practically Museum quality really. Not a scratch or scuff to be found on the unit itself (note: there are apparently some fingerprint marks and a bit of dust can be seen in the pictrures, but can be and have been easily cleaned). There is a small dent on one of the bottom edge of the left plastic side cheeks that can be seen the pic below. It's hardly noticeable and in fact, the only reason I mention it is because it really is the only imperfection this MS-20 has. It comes with 3 original korg patch cables that are printed 'KORG' as well a plastic patch sheet that lists the functions in Japanese (Collectors items?)"

"Restoring a Realistic (Moog) MG-1 Panel using Purple cleaner which will leave it looking almost brand new. Background audio is courtesy of my week-old Taurus 3 - so there should not be any false copyright claims.
I have used Purple Cleaner to clean mylar arcade-machine overlays for years. Purple Clean will not affect mylar.
I had determined beforehand that the metal panel was painted with acrylic lacquer below the mylar. The factory probably used lacquer because of it's quick-drying capabilities Purple clean will not affect acrylic lacquer, but it will also clean oily grime and enamel based paint from ABS, mylar, and polystyrene leaving it super-clean. I also cleaned the plastic sides (not on video). You can use mineral oil to wipe down plastics they have a little cloudiness after cleaning.
Finally the Purple Clean needs to be neutralized with water. I did not want to get the whole panel wet so I first wiped off the cleaner and then used a moist rag to neutralize the rest.
This is a trick that I learned from the model-car hobby. I am sure there many web pages and videos describing what you can do with purple cleaner.
Warning: Purple Cleaner uses a form of Sodium Hydroxide which is caustic and with improper use it could burn your skin on contact, along with your eyes, and sinuses with the vapor alone. Use with caution. If you cannot find Purple Cleaner, then you can use an automotive orange cleaner (just make sure it does not have any pumice)."
"The gravity well uses cv to shape audio. Where a filter removes certain harmonics the Gravity Well modulates the existing waveform to create new sounds.
I'm using a doepfer A110 VCO (sequenced with a Modcam touch sequencer) Square & sine waves are fed into a A114 ring modulator. Its output goes into the Gravity Well.
The Gravity Well has 4 CV inputs. I'm feeding a sine wave LFO into the first input (called latitude) Into the second input (called Longitude) I later (1m,55 secs) feed a random CV. This was generated using a combination of a noise generator, a sample/hold & a comparator. A 4MS Noise Swash, Buchla 265 (Source of uncertainity) or the MakeNoise Wogglebug would also prob work well as random sources of control voltages.
Modules used: Circuit Abbey Gravity Well Doepfer A110 VCO Doepfer A114 Ring Mod Modcan Touch Sequencer Doepfer A118 Noise Gen Doepfer A148 Sample/H Circuit Abbey TripFire (Comparator)
Many thanks to Matt from Rhythm Active for supplying the Modcan Sequencer, The Circuit Abbey Gravity Well and Tripfire

Quicksilver 303 OS update tutorial

"A guided video demonstrating how to update the operating system of the Quicksilver 303 CPU. This shows windows being used for the upgrade procedure, but the process is the same for other operating systems."
Update: some pics and the official press release:
"Dallas, TX, April 04, 2012 - After months of testing and development, Social Entropy is releasing the Quicksilver 303 CPU Upgrade. Quicksilver 303 is a complete replacement CPU for the classic TB-303 BassLine Synthesizer. It uses a completely rewritten operating system that enhances and extends both pattern and track modes. All operations can be carried out while the sequencer continues playback. We have strived to maintain the classic feel of the sequencer, while removing the frustration.
Many features have been added to the operating system, with a focus on realtime performance and tweaking.
The sequencer engine supports standard step entry in pitch and time modes, while a new realtime record capability allows patterns to be entered live with the 303 keyboard or a MIDI controller. Editing of pattern information is now simple, with the ability to move forwards and backwards within a sequence while the pattern continues playback. A new chase LED makes it easy to visualize the location of notes in the pattern.
Functions like copy and paste, randomize, extend, rotate and reverse can be applied to pitch or time information independently. Patterns can be transposed in octaves or semitones in both pattern write and play modes. The transpose amount is stored with each pattern.
In pattern play mode, up to eight patterns can be chained for playback. A pattern restart and clock resync function makes sure that the music never stops during live performance!
The extended track mode allows for complete songs to be constructed using patterns. Each track step has settings for pattern transposition, multiple repeats or pattern chains.
Changing between modes can be performed without stopping the sequencer and all data is stored in EEPROM memory, eliminating the need for batteries.
Enhanced MIDI connectivity provides synchronization, sequencer input and output, as well as a new "MIDI Control Mode" which allows the buttons of the TB-303 to be controlled remotely by any device that can send MIDI note messages. Full MIDI System Exclusive support means that pattern and track data to be dumped to external devices for backup or sharing.
USB connectivity is used for easy operating system upgrades.
The Quicksilver 303 is available for immediate purchase. Price for the base CPU is $275 USD, with free installation for a limited time.

When the Cotillion arrived
We threw out the television
Model D 575
Has custom flute presets
And Harmony-Plus in addition
Now for an arm and a leg
We get three half-dozen beats to choose from
So now we can pretend
That there's an orchestra in the loungeroom
I put the Genie Bass on
So my left hand can play the choir
With 16ft Diapason
And Lowrey's patented Orchestral Symphonizer
Banjo's great on repeat
The kids want to play but they'll have to be patient
The wife can't help tapping her feet
It's a genuine home entertainment revelation
State of the art
(Hold the phone, it's so)
State of the art
[Listen to the difference!]
(Oh my god, it's so)
State of the art
[By use of a computer]
State of the art
Now we don't want to go out
When we could spend the night at home with the Cotillion
Invite the neighbours around
Start the bossanova beat and limbo from the living to the kitchen
Enjoy the state of the art
The Magic Swing Piano really is astounding
Now we can't tell them apart
But these amazing simulations end up sounding even better than the real thing
State of the art
(Hold the phone, it's so)
[Computer controlled tone colour]
State of the art
[The marriage of music to computers is quite natural]
(Oh my god, it's so)
State of the art
