Laurentide SynthWorks - PRM2 Demo (Dual Passive Ring Mod)

Published on Sep 9, 2015 Laurentide SynthWorks

http://www.laurentidesynthworks.net/

"The PRM2 is a dual passive ring modulator with a twist. There are two toggle switches that are connected to 2 of the 4 diodes (per ring mod). Each toggle controls one + and one - diode. They can be switched off and removed from the circuit. This creates an unbalanced modulation between the audio transformers, lending to some pretty gritty and interesting results. This demo has both diodes switched off. In this configuration, there are a lot more "dead spots" causing a more dramatic rise and fall resulting in more pronounced VCA type modulations.

The PRM 2 is using a Make Noise STO Saw Wave for the Carrier and a Mutable Instruments Braids set to CSAW for the input. The output is fed into Mutable Instruments Streams (Left Channel) which is set to compressor (and maxed out). The Streams output is fed into the Synthroteck Echo and the rate is controlled by a Synthrotek Sequence8. The output of the Echo then goes into a Music Thing Srping Reverb set to about 10 o'clock. Finally it is sent to the Sputnik 6 Channel Mixer.

The drums are a Mutable Instruments Peaks (Kick & Snare) which are mixed with the Manhattan Analog Discrete SVVCF and sent into the right channel of Streams which is also set to Compressor mode (and obviously maxed out). The output is then sent to the the Sputnik Mixer. The individual kick and snare hits are sent untouched to the Sputnik Mixer as well to maintain low-end and shape."

WALDORF NW-1// SPECTRA // Complete Wavetables 00-37

Published on Sep 9, 2015 LESINDES

"I recorded a drone to give you an idea how versatile the factory preset wavetables are, middle octave, in which 1 internal and 3 external LFOs are modulating FOUR basic wave parameters of the Waldorf: TRAVEL (quite slow), BRILLIANCE (fast), POSITION (slowest) and SPECTRUM (medium). I chose very distinct modulator speeds in order to enable you to realize how the different NW-1 paramters interact. PITCH constant and NOISY off."

Native Instruments Releases REAKTOR 6 - Modular DSP Synth Creation

Uploaded on Sep 9, 2015 Native Instruments

"September 9, 2015, Berlin – Native Instruments today released REAKTOR 6 – the latest version of the acclaimed modular DSP environment at the core of the Native Instruments brand since its release as GENERATOR in 1996. Featuring best-in-class DSP and sound quality, REAKTOR 6 delivers major innovations for instrument builders as well as being the most approachable version of the software for anyone interested in deep sound experimentation. REAKTOR 6 also introduces a major development in Blocks, a set of diverse modules allowing users to create custom synths in the same way a modular synthesizer is patched. REAKTOR 6 now comes at a new, reduced price, making it the most cost effective entry into custom device building to date. REAKTOR 6 is available through the NI Online Shop for $199 / 199 € / ¥ 22,800 / £169 / $AU 279. Special update and educational pricing is also available.

"REAKTOR has represented the cutting edge of electronic sound for nearly two decades, so bringing such an iconic and mature software to the next level is an especially thrilling challenge", says Mate Galic, CTO and President of Native Instruments. "Now our development team cannot wait to see how the REAKTOR community will utilize the new features of version 6 for a new generation of ingenious and novel instrument designs".

Blocks is a new framework in REAKTOR 6, providing the speed and flexibility of modular synth patching combined with the benefits of working in the digital domain. REAKTOR 6 comes bundled with 30 Blocks in several categories, each with a specific purpose. Bento Box Blocks represent the core components of a modular synth setup. Boutique Blocks take inspiration from custom hardware that bring advanced sound shaping to the world of modular synthesis. Digilog Blocks create complex rhythms, process notes, and provide structure in patches. NI All-Star Blocks are single rack-style components of Native Instruments synths such as ROUNDS and MONARK. The world of Blocks will continue to grow as the vibrant REAKTOR community builds and shares new Blocks and Blocks patches – all available for free online at NI’s REAKTOR User Library.

REAKTOR 6 features new enhancements for the advanced builders creating their own synthesizers, effects, and audio devices. Three key additions extend REAKTOR’s workflow efficiency and sampling power at the Core level. Bundled wires are like multicore cables, making intra-level patching cleaner and more elegant. Scoped buses allow ‘wireless’ connectivity across multiple structure levels. The Table Framework feature allows flexible and efficient data sharing throughout REAKTOR, including from Primary to Core levels.

Online education provider Kadenze has developed a comprehensive new university-level course for the REAKTOR community. The course offers freely available content, giving users of all levels a way to expand their skillset when working in REAKTOR. Students will receive an in-depth look into various audio synthesis methods, including additive, subtractive, sampling, wavetable, physical modeling, and granular synthesis, as well as the various types of modulation synthesis. Users can get full accreditation for their studies at additional cost. The first course content will be available in time for the release of REAKTOR 6, with more to follow.

REAKTOR 6 is available now through the NI Online Shop for $199 / 199 € / ¥ 22,800 / £169 / $AU 279.

Owners of previous versions of REAKTOR and students enrolled in educational institutions can upgrade to REAKTOR 6 for $99 / 99 € / ¥ 11,800 / £89 / $AU 149.

Kawai K-3 Digital Wave Memory Synthesizers with Memory Cart

Note the listing states the K3 is a wavetable synth, however it's not in the same sense as the PPG, Waldorf, and Ensoniq implementations where you can scan through waveforms in a wavetable. On the K3 you select a static digital waveform which gets process through an analog filter per voice, much like on KORG's DW8000. The K3 has an SSM based analog filter vs. CEM. Many consider the SSM to be smoother sounding. I believe the K3 has rudimentary additive synthesis which allows you to create a single user waveform. This is a nice sound digital analog hybrid.

New AnalogKit Synth Builder for iPad

iTunes: AnalogKit - Bitcount ltd.

"AnalogKit lets you play, share, and build synths and effects in an incredible digital playground.

A music hacker's paradise, Analogkit is designed to be enjoyed by both seasoned synth aficionados and curious cable-wranglers. Whether you're into built-from-scratch effects pedals, synths, vocoders or even DIY games, AnalogKit allows you to build nearly anything you can dream of.

• Piece together controls, effects and signal generators into any gear you can imagine.
• 50+ included core components that can be combined to create endless possibilities of sounds.
• Share your creations with the community via the built-in Swap Meet, or browse, live-preview, and download gear built by other users.
• Compatible with many external audio interfaces so you can run AnalogKit as an effects board for mics, guitars, and other analog instruments.
• Full USB, Bluetooth, and WiFi MIDI support to let you use your favorite external controllers
• Advanced optimization algorithms enable you to run tens of thousands of basic modules in real-time on a modern iPad.
• State of the art anti-aliased oscillators provide the most authentic sound sources digital synthesis can offer.
• All the favorite toys from modular analog synths as well as digit logic components so you can build all the hybrid franken-synths your hardware modular friends could only dream of.

Under the hood, AnalogKit is anything but a toy. The process of putting things together with Analogkit is nothing less than an exploration of digital audio creation that's both revealing and powerful.

Like a supercharged electronics project kit, Analogkit lets you combine and wire things up in any way you want, rather than having to settle for adjusting settings on existing gear. Depending on what components you choose, it can be both a trippy generative app that's easy to lose hours with, or nimble and precise tool for building custom setups quickly.

Analogkit takes full advantage of its digital nature and lets you literally hook anything into anything, chain together as many of a thing as you like, and finally experiment like a kid again ...a kid that happens to have the best audio toy to come to the iPad yet."

Logan/Hohner String Melody II Repair Project

ELECTRONICS REPAIR HAS THE POTENTIAL TO INJURE, CAUSE FIRE, AND DEATH. ALWAYS TURN OFF AND UNPLUG ANY DEVICE BEFORE ATTEMPTING REPAIRS. Do not attempt electrical repairs unless you are qualified and have adequate skills and experience. ALWAYS exercise safety first. This video was generated for educational learning purposes only. There is no shame in taking your instrument to a qualified professional for peace of mind.

Today I'm repairing a vintage string synthesizer. All the G# notes were dropping out due to some intermittent problem. Intermittent issues, due to their nature of coming and going, can be difficult to track down. Luckily for me the String Melody II is relatively easy to service, even without any schematics, with a little background knowledge in how string synthesizers work.

Normally I would start at the power supply, but I have already serviced that area and know it is functioning properly. Since all of the G# notes are experiencing problems, I begin investigating the Master Oscillator. The Master Oscillator, similar to organs from the 70s, generates all the notes for the top octave. These frequencies are generated all the time regardless if keys are pressed. These top octave frequency voltages are wired to another large PCB located under the keybed, which is responsible for dividing down the notes for all the lower octaves."
