six patterns in three movements. octatrack is on drums n mixer duty as usual. modular is providing secondary drums and a fast plucky bass line. digitone is the bright shimmery pads and keys as well as the growly vocal bass and the analog four is the subby analog goodness, squidgy analog goodness and the low pad that comes mostly toward the end.

octatrack does most of the sequencing, eloquencer for the euro bits and ableton to record and compress it all to hell and back."

"as part of london design festival we were invited by tom dixon to collaborate at the coal office. together we created a concept for an OD-11 musical chandelier, controlled by OP-Z, to effectively blend sound and light into a never seen before performance.

built and designed by louis yearwood, tom butterfield and george lazenbleep, the whole thing consists of eight OD-11 speakers, mounted upside down in an 80kg frame of aluminum, standing on the floor, as well as mounted in the ceiling. 16 rgb flex led strips run along the sides, all controlled live from an OP-Z using the enttec dmxusb pro, via a 24 channel dmx dimmer.

for the music we had a custom designed table, where all the equipment was laid out. all in all we used two OP-1:s (one stationary and one free, to be able to use the accelerometer), four OP-Z:s (one together with the oplab module to control the pocket operator modular 400, one for dmx to control the led strips on the chandelier, and two for main audio), and a PO-32 tonic, triggered via another oplab module. everything was played freely or synced via the oplab modules and lined out into a soundcraft signature mixer, using its built-in effects. from there the audio was fed directly to the eight OD-11:s in the chandelier as well as into a 12k watt custom sound system."

Four artists from across Canada to be mentored by electronic music pioneer

(Calgary, AB — October 17, 2019) The National Music Centre (NMC) is pleased to announce electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani as the next Master in Residence at Studio Bell in Calgary.

Dubbed the 'Diva of the Diode,' Suzanne Ciani is a five-time Grammy award-nominated composer, electronic music pioneer, and neo-classical recording artist whose work has been featured in countless commercials, video games, and feature films. Over the course of her 40-plus year career, Ciani has released 16 solo albums, including Seven Waves, The Velocity of Love, and most recently, her comeback quadraphonic Buchla modular synth performance recording LIVE Quadraphonic.

Alongside NMC ON and AEMCON events, Ciani will offer her expertise on electronic music composition, including analog modular live performance and sound design techniques, with four emerging Canadian electronic artists during an intensive one-day session. Participants include Calgary producer and bass music advocate Homesick, Winnipeg-by-way-of-Toronto electronic artist Joanne Pollock, experimental music-maker YlangYlang from Montreal, and Toronto-based experimental electronic performer Korea Town Acid, who will also appear as part of NMC ON: After Hours on November 15. Tickets for After Hours are on sale now at studiobell.ca/whats-on.

The public will also have a chance to see Ciani lead a public Buchla Masterclass on November 16. Tickets for that event are available at studiobell.ca/whats-on.

Grendel RA-99 Grenadier + 2TAC Sequencer

"We’re in the Rare Waves shop, demoing tones from the first prototype of a Grendel RA-99 Grenadier with help from a Grendel 2TAC analog sequencer. Fun! The RA-99 is based on the unconventional Grendel RA-9 Grenadier we produced back in 2014. It’s a true analog synthesizer with CV-Gate control. It has a formant filter bank with 3 VCFs for those guttural vowel tones and alien beatbox sounds. Its filter bank is animated by a pair of voltage-controlled modulation sources that can work as either LFOs or envelope generators. Its tone comes from 1 oscillator with VC waveshape + subharmonics and a pink noise source. And it has 20 patch points for semimodular control.

The original RA-9 Grenadier had a very basic 4-step sequencer built in - after revision, it spawned the 2TAC. So in a sense, the original RA-9 Grenadier evolved into the two units which you’re hearing."

Soundforce DCO // Thick & rich analogue oscillator & mixer for Eurorack Modular Synths

"Here we have the DCO Eurorack module from Soundforce. It's an analogue mixer based on DCO technologies of yesterday with a much higher quality modern take on the digital control element of the circuit. We get saw and square waves with lovely PWM and then two subs a noise source a mixed output with sliders to mix and blend the waves onto the mixed output. I've tried to make sure the video demonstrates the sound and functions but also really dive into some more creative and advanced patching for things like layered multiple outputs for fully realised musical pieces and also making a DCO drum kit out of the one oscillator. "Upgrade for the NLC thru-hole dual LFO. Now has CV and sync, sine, square, tri and stepped outputs. with switches it ranges from 1 cycle per 20 minutes up to 10kHz.

The stepped out is a S&H sampling the sinewave and clocked internally by the other oscillator.

In this vid the left side is supplying CV to a VCO, the right side is at audio rate and giving the VCO an FM signal. each side is CV-ing the other as well.

TBH it is a std module so I really just have a good play with the dog."
