Pi Day 2023 - Rhythmic, melodic, and timbral explorations with pi

video upload by CatSynth TV

"We celebrate Pi Day this year by exploring rhythmic and timbral possibilities with π. Specifically, we look at rhythmic subdivisions (π-tuplets) and harmonics based on ratios of the square root of π. We use the Euterpea music-composition library in the prorgramming language Haskell for our rhythmic and melodic work. For the timbres with pi-based harmonics, we use Cherry Audio Sines and Arturia's Synclavier V. The music is the assembled and played in Ableton Live; addition examples using Arturia CMI V and Pigments.

PeacockMedia MIDISID jam with Drumstep Pro

video upload by Dj Puzzle

"Something new on the Table of Boom. Here we have an Arturia Drumstep Pro sequencing the Sinmons SDS9 and the MIDISID. It’s also sending sync to the 1010music Razzmatazz. The Replicator is a cassette tape echo device. Interesting fact, the MIDISID uses two SID chip clones to generate synth sounds you would find made by a Commodore 64. MIDISID uses two modern SID recreations (Nano SwinSIDs). The reveb on the MIDISID is coming from that cheap Harbinger mixer I got a couple months ago. I think it sounds nice for the price."

Bask in the analog synth majesty of the Korg Trident Mk.1

video upload by Mamotreco

"As the sun rises over majestic hilltops and mountains, the nippy morning air is rich with the sound of musical tones. It's the harmonious melody of a Korg Trident synthesizer. The analog warmth reverberates through the images of valleys and mountains, perfectly complementing the stunning natural landscapes of the north east areas of Spain. #vintagesynths #korgtrident #80ssynth

The Korg Trident Mk.1 synthesizer is a wonderful analog polysynth, crafted in the 80s to produce a variety of rich sounds. Its three analog synth sections, each with its own distinct tone and controls, blend together to create powerful sounds that can evoke lush and complex sonic landscapes.

With images of nature appear on screen, the sound of the Korg Trident Mk.1 takes on a life of its own in relation to the beauty of the surroundings on display. The warm and inviting analog synth tones of the Korg Trident underline beauty of the surrounding images of wilderness beside it.

Terrassa is the city at the foot of these mountains with a population of 200,000 people, 12 miles away from Barcelona. Highlights of the city include:
- shopping mall 'Parc Vallès'
- people walking around
- olympic stadium with CaixaBank cashpoint not too far away
- parking space
- largely rocky mountain massif next to city, aka Sant Llorenç natural park
- lottery ticket booths
- some museums so you can learn more about the city

The Korg Trident Mk.1 is the synth for all seasons and settings. Its sound is equally at home in the shadow of chilly mountains as it is in the verdant fair-weather hills of spring and summer. No matter the time of year or location, the Korg Trident's analog warmth and organic sound complements your personal vision of nature.

Roland SH-4d Synthesizer Demo

video upload by Robert Saint John

"A short demo of the new Roland SH-4d synthesizer. I created the sequenced tracks 2-5 (including drums) and left Part 1 open to play the lead. Good progress in a week, and I’m really enjoying it as much as I’d hoped. Great sounds, and very good navigation packed into a solid UI. I need to dig more into the EQ and effects, but I definitely rate it 👍 👍"

Yamaha TX802 Custom Sound Demo (No Talking)

video upload by soitgoesmusic

"A demo of the Yamaha TX802. With similar architecture as the DX7 MkII, this FM rack synth is surprisingly warm.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- Has the classic DX7 sound in a 2U rack space
- Can make a very wide range of sounds
- Interface is relatively easy to use

Cons:
- FM synthesis is difficult to program
- Presets are dated sounding (maybe a pro for some)"

Morphagene // Mega Modularis' First Reel

video upload by Mega Modularis

"OK! Here we go, this is my first try with the Morphagene, I was very excited to finally receive this module, which has been on my wish list for quite a while, so look out for plenty of Morphagene exploration coming soon. I started with a nice loop from Rangoon on the Lubadh and proceeded to explore and figure out how the Morphagene works, and you can come along with me for the journey! This was my first Reel, although I think after filming this I realised I’d made a new reel and still had an empty first reel, but hey, I’m still learning and exploring how this module works! My goal was to create some nice ambient soundscapes from a relatively simple melodic loop, and I think I accomplished that, what do you think? Of course the Morphagene was helped along my Mimeophon and Beads, some of my favourite ambient making modules! Anyway, sit back & enjoy! MM.

Patch Notes:

XILS-lab PolyKB III Gets a New Hi-Res UI & More in Version 3.6.3 Update

video upload by matrixsynth

The press release follows.

XILS-lab lovingly lavishes virtual makeover on acclaimed PolyKB III virtual instrument plug-in, providing new hi-res UI and more with Version 3.6.3

“Since starting XILS-lab, the rarified and revered RSF PolyKobol II analogue polysynth from France has always held a special musical place in our hearts — the true destination of our ongoing journey to create one of the best-sounding virtual analogue synthesizers available today. Tweaking our algorithms for a better sound with less CPU load, we’ve never stopped working on PolyKB III, always adding new features.”

- XILS-lab CEO Xavier Oudin, 2023

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: XILS-lab is proud to take PolyKB III to Version 3.6.3 status — lovingly lavishing the virtual instrument plug-in par excellence with a new hi-res UI (User Interface) and associated faster UI engine alongside full Apple Silicon compatibility and VST3 support, while ensuring that it remains one of the best-sounding virtual analogue synthesizers available, thousands of development man-hours after first being launched in its original PolyKB incarnation as the then-fledgling virtual instrument and effect plug-in-specialising software company’s second product release way back in May 2010 — as of March 14…

Like its predecessors, dating all the way back to a May 2010 release in its original (PolyKB) incarnation, the latest Version 3.6.3 of PolyKB III truly captures the sound and spirit of the rarified and revered RSF PolyKobol II analogue polysynth from France — one that surely should have made more of a musical mark in its own right with advanced analogue waveform-morphing oscillators well ahead of their time, yet sadly saw the demise of its innovative creators, completely out of touch with 1983’s untimely arrival of Yamaha’s digital dominance-triggering DX7 super- seller (shifting upwards of 200,000 units, compared to the miserly 40 units, each costing several times that of a DX7, managed by RSF before it ran into financial difficulties) — to include its most revolutionary feature: analogue waveform-morphing oscillators.

On the face of it, then, those analogue waveform-morphing oscillators — providing instant access to hundreds of different analogue- modelled free-running oscillator waveforms, which is far more than those provided by other virtual instrument plug-ins, including those that switch between oscillator sets — are available for all to see clearly now in Version 3.6.3 of PolyKB III, thanks to its new hi-res UI. Ultimately, they can be dynamically modulated by a number of sources.

When working with the latest Version 3.6.3 of PolyKB III, there are also two gorgeous, creamy-sounding multi-mode filters — VCF 1 and VCF 2 — to play with, each of which is self-resonating in all modes while also making use of XILS-lab’s proprietary 0df (Zero Delay Feedback) technology. There are also three analogue-modelled envelopes — ADSR1, ADSR2, and ADSR3 — with time multiplication and looping facilities, all working together with two LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) — LFO1 and LFO2 — to deliver a fat, warm, and instantly inspiring ‘analogue’ sound like no other.

Of course, even when first released to the musical masses in December 2016, PolyKB III would not be worthy of joining XILS-lab’s ever- expanding virtual instrument lineup if it did not include innovative and exclusive features — features like each voice having its own modulation engine or, indeed, using the polyphonic SEQUENCER as a giant 128-step, four-line/16-destination so-called ‘Step Sequencer Modulator’ making it fit for being propelled well and truly into the 21st Century! Creatively, this allows users to sculpt not only the most detailed trance- gate patterns, but also slides and incredible rhythmic patterns. Put it this way: with PolyKB III it is possible to modulate anything with anything!

And it is also possible to make each note sound different: the Voice XY module acts as a single-note quad XY modifier — with total control over the creation of subtle or wild variations for each note in a 2D window with four different parameters, while the Space XY module makes creating a 3D space a breeze — users can freely place each note in a three-dimensional space to build otherwise unachievable ‘stereoscapes’ with movement induced by inbuilt chaotic functions. It is fair to say that users have never had so much creative control over the stereo field! Furthermore, both modes can be combined with the True Unison engine, producing dazzlingly deep sounds that will musically take anyone’s breath away and immediately take pride of place in any mix.

Meanwhile, with its new hi-res UI and associated faster UI engine alongside full Apple Silicon compatibility and VST3 support vying for attention and distinguishing the latest Version 3.6.3 of PolyKB III from its acclaimed predecessors while it readily remains one of the best-sounding virtual analogue synthesizers available, XILS-lab CEO Xavier Oudin is justifiably proud of how far it has come and where it is going: “Since starting XILS-lab, the rarified and revered RSF PolyKobol II analogue polysynth from France has always held a special musical place in our hearts — the true destination of our ongoing journey to create one of the best-sounding virtual analogue synthesizers available today. Tweaking our algorithms for a better sound with less CPU load, we’ve never stopped working on PolyKB III, always adding new features.”

The latest Version 3.6.3 of PolyKB III is available to purchase as an iLok-protected virtual instrument plug-in (including computer-based authorisation), priced at an introductory promo price of €59.00 EUR until April 16, 2023 — rising thereafter to its regular price of €199.00 EUR — directly from XILS-lab via its dedicated webpage, which also includes more in-depth information, here: https://www.xils-lab.com/products/polykb-iii-&-ii-p-159.html

The latest Version 3.6.3 of PolyKB III can be directly downloaded in 64-bit AAX-, AU-, VST- and VST3-compatible formats for macOS (10.9+) and 64-bit AAX-, VST-, and VST3-compatible formats for Windows (7/8/10) from here: https://www.xils-lab.com/products/polykb-iii-&-ii-p-159/download.html#FullInstallerPK3"

LoFi Future SGFX 100 Analog Glitch FX Processor

video upload by LoFiFuture

"Available to order here: https://lofifuturestore.square.site/p...

The SGFX (Studio Glitch FX) 100 is the first model in the new line of large format video glitch fx processors by LoFi Future

Whilst LoFi Future designs usually aim to be compact the SGFX 100 sacrifices portability in favour of a wide range of effects. The 17" wide console can be used as a desktop unit or a 1U 19" rack mount unit (with supplied rack ears)

The controls all reside on the front face of the unit, leaving the top a useable surface to place other pieces of gear (The Panasonic AVE5 and AVE7 video mixers can sit nicely on top for example)

The unit features 10 main controls for altering the image. The first two are specific functions, one being the sharpness / softness control and one being the chroma / colour control. The other 8 are the circuit bent effects that can be combined in all sorts of ways.

As well as these ten controls there is also a true bypass switch and a 'soft bypass' knob. The true bypass switch will completely bypass the FX. The soft bypass knob however will let some of the unaffected video signal mix with the effect video signal when the FX are engaged. This can help restore some stability to the image and also change how all of the FX respond opening up more possibilities.

Specifications
-PAL and NTSC compatible
-12V DC input (power supply NOT included)
-Desktop / rackmount enclosure"

"This unit was disassembled. Old brittle and cracked neopren dust protectors were replaced with new ones, the left side plastic was broken on the inside and was glued, and a defective fader was opened up, cleaned and repaired. This work took 2 hours of skilled vintage synth tech labor, which is super fast as far as vintage gear servicing goes."

"One of the fattest, roundest, pleasantly analog synthesizers around! It's long been known for creating some of the thickest and best analog pads, sweeps, buzzes, basses and textures. It features Matrix Modulation for extremely wild virtual patching for almost unlimited range of sounds and modulation capabilities!

Matrix 12 is much fatter and more programmable than either. Every control can have an effect on some other parameter thanks to Oberheim's flexible design. For example, there are 15 types of LFOs and VCAs per voice! And there's plenty of diagrams drawn out on the front panel of the synth to help you figure out some signal routing. This is not a synth for the beginner."

The Jupiter-4 came out in 1978 and was one of the first polyphonic synthesizers along with the Prophet 5 and the OB-X. Being affordable, he was often found on the coming New Wave music. The Human League, Heaven 17, Duran Duran, Simple Minds and many other groups used the JP4. The sound is very unique and stands out from the big brothers. Wilder, louder, darker. I prefer this sound character over the others.

The demo video shows some special sound characteristics of the first Jupiter synth.

Everybody needs some mess in there studios. Without any mess...
Who am I kidding. I'll tidy up tomorrow, I promise."
