My studio - 1981

flickr by Chris_Carter_ where you'll find a description of the studio. Be sure to click on the All Sizes link when you get there for the full size shot. This is also Chris Carter's MySpace page. Note the Gristleizer.

The synths:
"The modular system on the right consists of three Roland 190 racks and two 191J racks containing: two 182 Step Sequencers, 121 Dual VCF, 130 Dual VCA, 112 Dual VCO, 150 Ring Mod/Noise/S&H/LFO, 110 VCO/VCF/VCA, 172 Audio Delay/Phaser/LFO/Gate Delay.
Also included in the Roland racks were a number of my own self-built modules, including a: Digisound Dual VCO, Digisound Dual VCF, Digisound Dual VCA, Digisound Dual ADSR, Digisound Dual RM, Blacet variable clock/divider, a Gristleizer module and (in the top rack) a flanger/delay and a dual phaser/flanger/delay.
Under the modular system is a Boss DR-55 Dr. Rhythm (sitting on top of) a Roland CSQ-600 Digital Sequencer, a Roland TR-808 (one of the first in the UK I might add), a Sinclair frequency meter (for tuning) and a Roland 181 Controller Keyboard."

sent my way via Benge. BTW, do check out this post on Benge's Twenty Systems as well. The CD is a tribute to synths and comes with a very nice CD book on the synth used for each track. The CD received praise from Brian Eno.

Hithouse - Jack To The Sound Of The Underground (1988)

YouTube via DeeJayPT. via fischek. Casio SK-1 featured in the video.
"Videoclip from a classic oldskool acid house track dated from 1988.
The producer of this song, Peter Slaghuis (that's why "hithouse"), was a very well-known DJ/producer in the era 1985-1991. In the early '90's he had his own record company "Hithouse Records" on which came out early Dutch hardcore releases. Himself was involved in such groups like "Holy Noise" and "Epilepsia". He worked together with persons like Paul Elstak and Rob Fabrie, who both became popular (happy) hardcore producers in the '90's. Sadly enough, Peter Slaghuis would have never seen their succes and the succes of the genre hardcore because he passed away in a car accident in sept. 1991, just before "his" genre became more & more popular ..."

Metasonix R-52 Multimode Filter Eurorack Module

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"Ok nerds. Here's the ultra-dork demonstration of the new R-52 module from Metasonix. We start with a square wave oscillator, the Analogue Systems rs95. The R-52 sounds great. It's the same filter as the discontinued Metasonix TM-6.

You can see when the first cable gets plugged in. That's when we start modulating the "Sweep CV In" with the A.S. rs200 sequencer. The second cable is another channel of the sequencer modulating the "Resonance CV Input". Don't ask about dB response. Just bask in the crusty warmth that is the R-52.

Update: I just talked to Eric. This is the prototype of the R-52. The actual production models will be revised and will self-resonate. Cool."

Hans Zimmer and The Dark Knight

via John
"Here's a cool shot of Hans Zimmer's setup shown during a featurette on the Dark Knight DVD about how Zimmer designed the unique theme for the Joker. It's about a 6 minute segment, just about this. He does play it and also discusses how they brought in guitar, cello and pianos being played in unconventional ways (eg. with razor blades) then processed them together to get what he calls 'the sound of anarchy'. It actually made me want to buy the soundtrack which I almost never do." Moog modular and more. Note the modular wall behind the Moog. I believe he has some Roland System 500 and 100m in there. Cyndustries DarkStar Chaos Module

via this auction
"info from cyndustries web site

Discontinued by it's own Master, and ever shrouded in mystery is this John Blacet enigma: The Dark Star Chaos.

The Cyclops Blue LED is the window to the soul of this module's highly prized noise modulated oscillator and filter combination. Like a one-panel mini synthesizer of it's own, it's incredibly useful as an independent chaotic voice in a system because it features voltage control of it's pulse width, noise clock rate, and oscillator & filter frequencies. The built-in envelope generator is also modified for voltage control, and there is a separate filter output modification as well.

Due to scarcity of parts, these are no longer manufactured by Blacet Research. Occasionally we find one of these, although they are scarcer than dragon's teeth... Best to capture your own Dark Star Chaos Module and send it to us - if it is ever to learn the Modcanian ways..."

Broken Sails by Khoral

"It was essentially done with the Prophet 08 as main instrument... if you listen to tracks 1 or 4, for instance, that's pretty much the fantastic synth from Dave Smith Instruments all the way through...
Save for that... well, whenever you hear bass, that's the Moog Little Phatty...
The strings on "The Fortune Song" are Gforce Virtual String Machine and there's some Roland Alpha Juno-1 as well on the instrumental parts for this track.
The opening chords on "Empty the Boat" are Korg Wavestation."

Wham Last Christmas Video feat. Yamaha SHS10 Keytar for keyboardists with guitar-envy

YouTube via 123synthland

"That's right, after many years of being vintage synth dealers, we're trying to break into the music video business. Considering the high quality of this video, it may shock you to learn that this was our very first attempt at making a serious music video! We would like to personally thank George and Andrew for their patience. But seriously, this video was really meant to show you the beautiful Yamaha SHS10 Keytar we're about to offer up for sale. For some reason, hardly a day goes by when we don't get an email from someone looking for a keytar. We find this quite annoying considering, although we sell 'tars once in a while, we really specialize in vintage analog synths like Moogs and ARPs and don't usually cater to keyboardists who wish they were guitarists. (No offense) But back to the video! This SHS-10 is unlike most keytars in that it's got built in sounds. A couple of them are actually pretty good. And the analog drum patterns are really cool too! But you might not know it from listening to this clip of the onboard demo tune, a cover of Wham's "Last Christmas". If you don't like the internal sounds, there's a MIDI out so you can control external synths with it as well. We hope you enjoyed getting your Wham on like we did. Email us anytime at minime123@onebox.com"

Mattel Synsonics w/ Speakers

via this auction
"You can hit its pads with your fingers or drumsticks to trigger 4 sounds - snare, hihat, and two tom toms. One of the toms has a variable pitch control wheel on the side so you can either tune it to your liking or better yet vary the sound as you play. so, sounds like fun, right? But wait... THERE"S MORE!!!!

What made this thing so wiggy back then was the ability to RECORD phrases and use them to make songs. I actually used the Synsonics when I made demos on my 4 track cassette way back when. The way it works is, you turn on the bass drum, which serves as a steady beat - then you can record 16 beats on any of three channels. It can get crazy, and onplayback, you can actually switch between "loops." Hope all these words help, it really is just loads of fun and sounds cool too. You can adjust the rhythm, theres an accent button to "close" your hihat, you can use the buttons on the front to set rhythms by instrument if you don't play drums (my choice) . All of these options are explained clearly on the sticker on the back. Instructions are long gone.

And, this model has STEREO speakers - unbelieveable!!! Plus there is a midi plug (NEVER USED IT) [It's not actually MIDI - via craig m in the comments: "it's for footpedals for accent/bd and two flavors of sync."] left and right stereo RCA plug outputs for direct connections, headphone jack, and power adapter jack (never used it either, do not have the plug). I use the batteries, they seem to last a long time (6 "C" batteries not included). Oh, yeah, there is also a jack for "CASSETTE INPUT" - more old school opportunities, but never used that either.

A GREAT fun vintage retro analog drum machine. Sold as a toy (why do I remember this being expensive back then?) but way better than anyone ever expected."
