Oberkorn Test Jam

YouTube via FatSynthDude — June 05, 2010 — "So it turns out that the Oberkorn problem was just one of having been given the wrong power supply. I've contacted Noisebug about it, so hopefully they'll get me the right one soon so that I can run the Telemark and the Oberkorn simultaneously. XD

In the meantime, here's a quick jam session I threw together to make sure everything was working. Nothing too fancy is going on here, just a cheesy psy-trance loop I threw together. I got the Oberkorn mainly for modulation rather than note sequencing. In this video, it's controlling the filter of the FRXS, the filter for the Red Square, and the filter for the Pro One. The gates are being used to bounce the steps to wonderful yet random places. The Oberkorn is being clocked from MIDI, which works extremely well, by the way. ZTracker is sequencing the synth notes as well as the drums from the MPC1000. Mixing is done by a pair of StudioLives. Effects are being handled by the StudioLive's onboard effects, a Zoom 1202, a Peavey AddVerb II, and a pair of Lexicon MX300's.

I apologize that I ended up having to use the camera's audio for this video. The StudioLives were supposed to be recording the main outs to the computer for later syncing, but because my computer hates me, it recorded all of the individual channels with no problem, but not the master output. I would just go back and rerecord it, but I'm fat and lazy, so this is the end result. :-("

Roland SN-R8-01 & SN-R8-08 PCM ROM Demo

YouTube via zibbybone — June 05, 2010 — "Forgive me followers for it has been nearly 2 months since my last video - I've been busy with work and life. I scored these two PCM cards (Contemporary Percussion & "Dry") for the Roland R-8 & R-8M yesterday at an estate sale along with a Linn 9000 and Studio Electronics SE-1. Many have regarded the Roland R-8 as the best ROM drum machine ever made and I tend to agree. It is still a great drum machine today, although I prefer the R-8M rack versions. I just wish someone could come up with a way to increase the internal ROM sounds. Enjoy this "filler" video and hopefully my life will settle down so I can get back to making videos of my vintage synths in the near future."

NanoStudio iPhone - First Demo

YouTube via BlipInteractive — June 03, 2010 — "NanoStudio is a music app for iPhone which combines sampling, synthesis, sequencing and mastering.

Much more info at http://www.blipinteractive.co.uk

Record your ideas in real time, mix synth layers with samples, compose and arrange your tune using the powerful sequencer and bring the mix alive with real time effects such as reverb, waveshaping and delay. You can use your own samples or record them using the microphone. NanoStudio's low latency audio engine is custom engineered for iPhone, capable of delivering an amazing 48 voice polyphony in CD quality stereo.

Synth

Introducing Eden, NanoStudio's versatile synth. Eden creates analogue sounds ranging from deep basslines and fat pads all the way up to squealing 303 lines and heavily distorted leads. Each voice has 2 anti-aliased oscillators modulated in mix, ring or sync configurations fed into a low, band or high pass 2 pole resonant filter.

Eden's virtual patchbay allows you to connect 3 envelope generators and 4 beat-sync LFO's to create modulation mayhem. Real-time performance becomes a truly interactive experience with dual X/Y controllers, accelerometer input and a pitch bend wheel, all totally configurable via the patchbay. Controller movements can be recorded and edited using the sequencer

It doesn't stop there. NanoStudio allows you to use 4 synths simultaneously, each with its own insert effects such as waveshaping, chorus and delay. Create complex sonic textures using multi-mode to layer up to 4 different voice presets. When you want to go beyond basic oscillators, load up a sample and process it just like a normal synth voice - great for mashing up vocals or even the whole mix.

When you're ready to get really creative, NanoStudio allows you to resample its own output and trigger the sample via the pads or keys, freeing up synths and effects to add even more sonic goodness to your composition.

Trigger Pads

Record samples using the built in microphone, resample NanoStudio's own output or upload your own samples over Wifi using the NanoSync tool for PC and Mac. Edit your samples using NanoStudio's built-in wave editing tools and trigger them using the 16 pads. Adjust pitch, pan, volume and envelopes and assign each sample to one of the 3 output busses, each with its own effect and filter setup.

Sequencer

Record performances in real-time using the keys and sample pads or create patterns and controller sweeps by drawing them in the piano roll editor. Arrange your patterns into a complete song using the track editor. Edit to your heart's content while the song is playing and rest assured that every editing and recording operation has multiple undo/redo.

Mastering

Use Nanostudio's intuitive mixer to monitor levels and get your final mix just the way you want it. The mixer's two global effects sends allow you to individually apply reverb and delay effects to each track.

When you're ready to share your mix with others, and use NanoSync to copy the exported .wav file to your PC or Mac over Wifi."

godwin 849 string symphony

via this auction

"bought this brand new in 1982 from Dougies music shop in northwich, cheshire.. a few months before roland realeased the juno 6.... oh well!, there is not much info about this on the internet or anywhere, but i can tell you it is fully working , all buttons, lights, sliders, everything is fine... the only downside is the front panel is starting to rust slightly, and the handle on the flightcase has broken off. by the way this thing sounds fantastic, especially the chorus/tremelo unit, this synth is built like a tank, and weighs like one too!.. this synth is the much posher version of the godwin string concert.. is it rare let me know. this auction is deffo pick up only sorry"

ARP Avatar

via this auction
"There is one big difference between this ARP Avatar and others that have been offered on EB, which is: it works! In fact we just spent $492.68 with Advanced Musical Electronics, LA's premier synth repair service, to insure it is fully functional. If you don't believe us, here's a copy of the receipt! IMO this synth is best used as an adjunct to a 2600 or other ARP of the same vintage. However we also include a NOS guitar pick-up - never been used. The Avatar is legendary as the synth ARP spent a ton of money working on but then never really sold or marketed it properly. Opinions vary on the effectiveness of using it as a guitar synth and your mileage may vary. This particular synth is in G+ condition - probably as good as you'll find."

Sound Builders: In 1967, This Guy Invented Circuit Bending

"'Anything Can Happen'

In this episode of Sound Builders, we travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, to meet with Reed Ghazala, the founder and father of circuit bending. Reed takes us into his workshop where we get a glimpse into his world of circuit bending, exploring the history and evolution of this art. Reed bends our minds by walking us through the struggles and triumphs he endured while establishing the art of circuit bending.

“The wires fall upon the circuit like the paint on Pollack’s canvas,” he says, rhapsodically.

We tinker with several of Reed’s machines, manipulating sound and opening our minds to this fascinating art form. He works on a project for Motherboard while explaining the method to this music madness, his process, his teachings, as well as the different inventions he has created over the years.

See more Sound Builders episodes – and enter to win our contest for $1,000 – and don’t miss our documentary on New York’s circuit bending Bent Festival."

Tristan Perich: 1-Bit Symphony Pre-Orders

You can find Tristan Perich's 1-Bit Symphony on Pre-Order here. Pre-orders ship two weeks before official August 24 release date. See this video and the 1-bit label at the bottom of this post for more.

"Tristan Perich's 1-Bit Symphony is an electronic composition in five movements on a single microchip. Though housed in a CD jewel case, 1-Bit Symphony is not a recording in the traditional sense; it literally "performs" its music live when turned on. A complete electronic circuit programmed by the artist and assembled by hand plays the music through a headphone jack mounted into the case itself.

A return to the format of Perich's lauded 1-Bit Music (described by the Village Voice as "technology and aesthetic rolled into one"), 1-Bit Symphony further reduces the hardware involved while simultaneously expanding its musical ideas. 1-Bit Symphony utilizes on and off electrical pulses, synthesized by assembly code and routed from microchip to speaker, to manifest data as sound. The device treats electricity as a sonic medium, making an intimate connection between the materiality of hardware and the abstract logic of software.

While 1-Bit Symphony is purely electronic in its execution, its contents reflect Perich's long-standing interest in orchestral composition. Since the release of 1-Bit Music in 2006, Perich's compositional work has combined 1-bit audio with acoustic classical instruments, providing insight into the conceptual and aesthetic relationships between physical and electronic sound. With 1-Bit Symphony, Perich brings this insight back into the digital realm, juxtaposing the grand form of a classical symphony with the minimal nature of 1-bit circuitry.
