JVC KB-700 features and demo
Published on Nov 18, 2017 Daniel Arena
"JVC KB700 (also sold as Lowrey Micro Genie V120).
Super weird mid 80's organ:
Solo section (square-wave + discrete VCF)
Poly section (divide-down? but phasey? there's a bunch of mysterious ASICs in there so it could be anything + Paraphonic VCF, subtle stereo spread + ensemble effects)
Analog + discrete drum machine
Bass synth
Bunch of other weird crap.
Sketchy weird beastie of a thing. Does some cool stuff though.
Obvious low-stress (and probably reversible) mods available for drum triggers and some VCF params. Medium-stress mods likely for loads of other stuff.
Some reverb added, no other effects. Apologies for the gross playing, I'm not really a keyboard player."
There was only one other post featuring the KB-700 here.
Dave Burraston aka noyzelab on How to Get Into Modular Synths w/o Going Broke
For those interested noyzelab has a post up on how to get into modular synths w/o going broke. It features references and notes from his recent talk at unsound adelaide 2017.
"some notes / refs for my talk at unsound adelaide 2017 on how to get into modular synthesis without going broke in the process. there's obviously a strong emphasis on cheap / diy / open source as an entry point to modular.."
"Dave Burraston is an Australian experimental musician, who has worked with a diverse range of artists from Chris Watson to Aphex Twin via Oren Ambarchi. A self-confessed gearhead, among his many accomplishments is the publication of SYROBONKERS!, the most technical interview ever given by Aphex Twin. Today he discusses how to get into modular synthesis - with a particular emphasis on not going broke!"
Roland Model 101 Vintage Monophonic Synthesizer from 1975 SN 500971

This one sold for $1000. It was sent in by the seller, but it was sold before I got to this post. I thought I would capture it on the site for posterity. :) If the sale falls through I'll put a new post up.
"Roland System 100 Model 101 Synthesizer from 1975. This is a true, vintage analogue synth that has a huge sound and vintage tone that simply isn't available in modern analogues. It has patch points along various points of the signal path that makes it a great companion to a modular system. I would frequently use it as a 3rd oscillator for my modular or use a Mutable Instruments Peaks for a snappier envelope than the built in one. It has patch points for CV and Gate and it responds to 1v/Oct, so you can control it with any standard MIDI to CV controller or from a modular without any conversion.
Lots of possibilities on this synth, much more than other vintage monosynths. Of course, you can pair it with the other components of the System 100 (Model 102, Model 104, etc.) system to add a second voice, sequencer and more.
The synth is fully functional. All the keys work, all the sliders and knobs work fine."

Red Roland Juno-106
via this auction
"Here’s a Custom Red Roland Juno 106 we finished up a few weeks ago.
It’s been totally electronically restored , and cosmetically modified.
What’s new is the polyphony meter on the far right of the front panel.
The switch turns it on and off. Right now , it’s set up to cause filter distortion. Pretty cool on filter dependent sounds.
You can also set it to be just a pretty light show, ( no filter distortion ) telling you which voice you’re playing.
Voice chips are perfectly restored and ready to go.
A copy of the “best of the best” sounds has been installed in memory."

"It's both cosmetically and functionally excellent. There are no dents or dings in the metal chassis. The paint, print, and logos are still intact and glossy. The end cheeks also have a nice glossy finish. The membrane buttons all work. There are no tears or rips in the membrane. All other knobs and controls work as intended. None of the keys are chipped/broken/repaired and they all trigger notes correctly. Yes, there are scuffs and marks on the end cheeks and a few very light scratches on the plastic display panel. The latter can likely be completely buffed out using plastic polish, if you desire. As you can see from the pics, though, the machine is in terrific condition overall. It's not like many of the beat-up examples you see on the 'Bay, where the sellers are asking outrageous prices."

Vintage Chroma Polaris synthesizer - pristine SN 300830
Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction
"This synth was manufactured in the early 1980s by Fender. I was the lead designer, and when the project wrapped up, I bought a couple from the company cheap. This one is serial 300830. Since I mostly played a different unit, this one stayed in its original shipping box for the intervening years, and it is in essentially perfect condition.
This is a six-voice synth with a 61-key velocity sensitive keyboard. It has selective pitch bend, which lets you bend some notes in a chord while keeping others fixed. It has a MIDI interface, and includes a built-in sequencer.
When I took this out of the box for the first time in a long time a week or so ago, the membrane switch panel connections has dried out and cracked, as happens with most Polarises, so I installed brand new panels. I also replaced the CPU with a faster one for a snappier feel, put in the latest revision of the firmware, upped the sequence memory to the maximum 64K, checked out and calibrated all the circuitry, and cleaned the keyswitches and keys. You're not likely to find a cleaner looking and performing Polaris on the market anywhere.
This will be packed in its original box with styrofoam supports, then wrapped in large cell bubble wrap, then packed in another double-wall box. I'm including the line cord, one sustain footswitch, and the original manuals. If you want the Tempo-Tap function for the sequencer, you'll need another footswitch, but any standard footswitch with a 1/4" phone plug will work. It doesn't come with a variable pedal, but any Chroma or ARP pedal you find on eBay will work. It doesn't have a cassette interface cable, but MIDI is a much better way to get data into and out of the Polaris. It comes with one set of factory sounds in it, and the two sets that Fender provided on cassette can also be found on the web, and sent in via MIDI."

Although it has presets, it can be partially edited via the left panel for many realtime adjustments. The best thing about this synth is the tone... VERY unassuming It sounds way bigger, smooth than it looks... reminds me very much of an ARP Soloist meets a Korg 770 monosynth meets a Moog micromoog!"

Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s SN 7885
Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction
"The Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s synthesizer is a two-oscillator monophonic fully-analog MIDI synthesizer. Its signal path is not only analog, but so are its control functions... envelope, LFO, etc. Because it is a fully-analog synthesizer with circuit designs based on vintage analog synthesizers, it evinces the tone that is what you seek when you're looking for vintage analog sound.
In addition to amazing and fat tone, the Leipzig-s has a great set of functionality. The oscillators have independent glide and independent pulse-width modulation. There is a sub oscillator that can be generated by either oscillator. The filter is a 24db per octave low pass that seems like it was deeply inspired by Moog, and generates one of the thickest, richest filter tones in modern analog synthesizers. The filter can be controlled with either of the two envelopes. The modulation section is complex and allows each oscillator to be modulated by a number of sources, including different waveforms from the LFO, envelopes, the other oscillator, and MIDI. The filter can also be modulated by these sources, allowing a level of complexity that is very useful. Especially for creating drum sounds.
The Leipzig-s also has an analog sequencer that can be MIDI controlled. If you want true vintage analog sequencing sounds with an analog synthesizer, this is a quick and inexpensive way to get them! The sequencer is single-channel, but allows you to control the oscillators in independent amounts. The sequencer can also control the filter."

- Fully working and recently serviced.
- Amazing analog sound - nothing like it apart from the classic SH-101 - best sub bass and acid sounds this side of a TB-303.
- Retrofit conversion to allow full control of note, pitch, length and velocity via four additional ports - this allows the original microcomposer element to be bypassed (if you wish, the microcomposer still works perfectly and can be programmed and synced as per the original) and controlled via MIDI.
- To allow the MIDI sync and control to allow the MC-202 to be controlled by computer sequencing software I am adding in the Kenton Pro-2000 midi sync device to the bundle.
- This means you can harness the amazing sounds of the 202 into modern sequencing software making this a far more powerful package than the original device."

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #45: Waldorf Blofeld - Song 1
Published on Nov 19, 2017 Christian's Sonic Spaces
"This is the first song with the Waldorf Blofeld. It's a table-top 25-voice polyphonic, 16-part multitimbral, digital synthesizer capable of wavetable synthesis and analogue modelling.
I used for the recording the following FX chain:
Blofeld - Alesis Ampliton - DigiTech Obscura - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. The used fx varied depending on the recorded track, while the internal fx of the blofeld were deactivated.
The signal goes via a small Behringer mixer straight into the pc.
To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with just a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track.
Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)"
Soulsby Atmegatron Song - Seavari's Theme
Published on Nov 19, 2017 Oscillator Sink
"Here's another little tune I've written and recording using the wonderful Soulsby Atmegatron. I hope you enjoy it!
Everything you hear (including the drums) is coming from the Atmegatron using its 'default' firmware. Very little processing has been applied during mixing - basically nothing more than rolling some bottom end off a few sounds, so it's pretty much Raw Atmegatron you're hearing!
I hope you enjoy it - I had a blast composing and recording it!

Moog Voyager Editor / Programmer for LOGIC v4 - X
Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Available on Reverb.
See the listings for other editors.
"This software is a Virtual synthesizer programmer for use with the Moog Voyager synthesizer. It simulates the Voyager front panel in a software environment within the APPLE LOGIC audio/sequencer program (formerly Emagic Logic). To use this software you MUST have a valid copy of LOGIC on your computer (see below), a Moog Voyager synth, and a MIDI interface which connects your computer via MIDI cable to your Moog Voyager synthesizer.
This software CANNOT be used as a stand alone application under any circumstances. It will NOT run in Ableton, Reason, VST or any other host - it is not a plug-in but a single importable layer of the Logic environment.
Upon purchase, you will ultimately receive a ZIP archive of the editor you purchased for Logic. UNZIP this archive and you will have a LOGIC song document you can now open in the Logic program. Once open, you will see the editor on your screen and you can then discover the pleasures of a virtual programmer for your Moog Voyager synthesizer!
FULLY LOGIC X COMPATIBLE!
OVERVIEW:
This editor is physically laid out to simulate the Moog Voyager front panel. If you're familiar with the Voyager layout then you should feel right at home here. I've adopted certain additions including some text feedback, a RESET function, and a few other things.
All programmable functions of the Voyager front panel are represented here - with the exception of a few parameters that Moog did not designate to be included in their realtime control set (please see the included photo to understand the layout). Essentially, all that is missing is the FINE TUNE control which is hardware only and not editable via MIDI.
Available on Reverb.

Mini Jam with Vessek prototype (III) for VCV Rack
Published on Nov 18, 2017 Leonardo Laguna Ruiz
"This is a short jam I recorded when testing Vessek (the yet unreleased Vult oscillator). You can read more about it here https://modlfo.github.io/VultModules/..."
"Vessek started modeling the basic circuit of an analog saw wave oscillator. Most of the parameters were initially obtained from my Volca Bass. I got a pretty good matching of the sound that I bet it would pass a blind test. Later in the development, samples of the Mother32, MFB Synth II and 0-Coast were sent to me by members of the VCV Rack community.
From the samples I’m able of extracting characteristics of the waves that help me fit my greybox model. Then I turned the model into something more efficient that still produces a very good analog sound. The new models allow me adding many more features that are not available in the original circuits.
The current model is a blend of the above mentioned oscillators with some added tweaks to give Vessek it’s own personality."

Percussa SSP Update: PCB Layout Complete and Next Steps
An update via Percussa's SSP Kickstarter campaign:
"Hi All,
Since the last update I wrote on the PCB Layout, I've been working non stop (7 days a week!) on finalizing the layout and getting it ready for production.
A lot of time was spent on cleaning up the traces on the PCB, optimizing the placement of components, adjusting polygons, length matching traces, fixing small details in footprints, and then of course going through a really long list of design rule errors and fixing them.
In particular the length matching of the multiple data busses on the PCB took a long time, as I had to find physical space on the PCB for all the matching (non trivial if there are already a lot of traces).
Final PCB Layout of the SSP (3 layers shown)
I also had to create a new CAM Job to export gerber files for this 6 layer design, and I had to import the final design into my 3D modeling software as well to do one last check on the placement of all the mechanical components.
Top layer BGA closeup
Finally I exported the gerber files and did a quick review to make sure they look good and sent them off for quotation and technical review to a few PCB manufacturers and the assembly house we work with.
Bottom Layer BGA closeup
So what's next? :-) I will be working on finalizing the BOM and fine tuning component values this coming week, while we wait for PCBs to arrive. I'll also be putting together a component kit for our assembly house who is going to do the SMT assembly for the boards. We'll initially be doing a small run, maybe 10 boards, and then start testing and debugging them. We'll keep you posted about our progress as always.
Now it's time to get some sleep! Until next week,
Bert & Celine"
