New Paraphonic Synth Module from Radikal Technologies in the Works

via Jörg Schaaf of Radikal Technologies.

"Nothing compares to this special moment, when you assemble a new frontpanel with knobs, LEDs and buttons for the first time."

Looks 3hp, so likely a new eurorack module.  Paraphonic implies polyphonic through one filter, shared envelope, etc.  You can take a look at some of the controls in the pics.  It appears to be a mini synth module with Mod, Mixer, VCF, ADSR, VCA, and FX sections.  The OSC section is likely offscreen to the left.

"This Synth has come from a professional working studio of and typically with most Moog Source’s the membrane is and was the Achilles heel!

The membrane had only one faulty button(store) which was confirmed 100% with my tech by temporary substitute of a known good membrane.

This is where it gets a bit confusing so bear with us 😃

To store a program on the Source you press hold , press and hold down store and then press the required number you want to save to.

In this case the store button is stuck on inside the membrane. Luckily this means you just press hold and the number and it saves fine, it's actually better than the original way of doing it.

However, holding down store and adjusting OSC2 level accesses a hidden function misnamed autotune.

It isn't autotune at all but a sort of fine tune for osc2 largely I believe to allow for warm up pitch errors and monotonicity tolerance issues in the parameter wheel optics(don't ask!)

This means that when adjusting OSC2 level you just adjusted the pitch of OSC2 and had no control of the level. It took a while to work out why this was happening but of course if the store button is stuck on the synth thinks that when you press osc 2 level you are trying to adjust the "autotune".

The way my tech got round this issue was by routing the demux s/h output of the autotune back to the OSC2 level cv input. This works perfectly.

So everything works as normal but the store button is not used (replaced by hold as above) and you cannot access the autotune function.

All Sources take a very long time (up to an hour) to fully stabilise pitch and this one is the same.

It's usable well before this by adjusting the interval parameter slightly as the pitch error doesn't affect scaling. I think the so called autotune parameter was designed to offset this and this is the only minor disadvantage I can see with the mod described above. In any event you would have had to adjust the autotune parameter a few times but this would be global and not per patch.

Overall the Source works really well and sounds great! You can save and recall sounds and all parameters work fine."

RetroSound MK-100 Kontakt Instrument

Published on Dec 19, 2017 Kontakthub

"The RetroSound MK100 is a combined synth and drum machine based on the MK100 from the early 80s, lovingly recreated for NI’s Kontakt sampler.

https://www.kontakthub.com/product/mk...

All synth presets can be customised with different waveforms and envelopes in exactly the same way as the hardware, together with the chorus and tremolo effects.

In addition we have the ability to bring Kontakt’s synth engine to bear on the source sounds, so each of the two synth layers can have it’s own independent filter and envelope settings.

All the preset drum patterns and fills are present, as is the Custom Drummer. The drum voices aren’t just limited to the straight preset sounds on the hardware, but can be modified in a number ways - and in addition to the real-time pattern recording from the original, a full graphic step editor lets you edit your patterns, as well as full MIDI keyboard driven operation for real-time jamming and creative sessions.

And the effects page ties it all together with a reverb and delay, and some other output effects to further shape the output - or you can just leave the FX off and use your usual plugins as required."

Buchla Easel V Tutorials

Playlist:

Buchla Easel V Tutorials: Episode 1 - Finding your way
Buchla Easel V Tutorials: Episode 2 - Modulation and Control Sources
Buchla Easel V Tutorials: Episode 3 - Exploring the additional features in Buchla Easel V

"French music software & hardware creators Arturia have created a series of tutorial videos demonstrating the features and functions of their recently released Buchla Easel V, a software recreation of Don Buchla's legendary Music Easel.
The in-depth tutorial - hosted by Glen Darcey - is presented in 3 parts, covering its layout, modulation and control sources, as well as the additional new features.

Recreating the leftfield brainchild of visionary synth legend Don Buchla, the Buchla Easel V maintains the unique, inspirational approach to sound creation that made the original a true cult icon. Over and above the standard parameters synth enthusiasts expect to find on an instrument, the Buchla Easel V provides a recreation of Don's innovative slider system. Each slider provides a unique voice, overtone, animation, shape, or color to the sound, opening up an exciting, fresh way of sculpting sound, and giving even seasoned professionals a chance to rediscover the joy of synthesis.

Authentically recreating Buchla's experimental, West coast sound was no small feat, and pushed the limits of TAEⓇ: Arturia's exclusive analog emulation technology. The incredibly accurate modeling - mapping out and reproducing the nuanced response of every analog component within the instrument - makes Buchla Easel V a truly cutting edge product. This level of intense detail means that each voice of polyphony requires around 20% of an i7's processor power.

While famed for the accuracy of their software emulations, Arturia also rework their instruments to include optional features that would have been impossible on the original instruments. Arturia have created many subtle improvements to the interface of the Buchla Easel V, in the true spirit of Buchla's legacy. They have also included an extra, ground-breaking synth engine: Gravity. Using an interactive physics engine to create animated, organic sounds, the addition of this powerful new synth engine makes Buchla Easel V a synth that's truly out of the world.

Buchla Easel V is one of four new stunning vintage instrument recreations that are included in V Collection 6 - Arturia's groundbreaking retro synth and keyboard package. Containing 21 instruments, each modeled after a keyboard that changed the face of music as we know it. Within V Collection, you'll find meticulously modeled analog synths, digital powerhouses, incredible performance keyboards, acoustic and electric pianos, organs, a string machine, and even a sampler.

Breathing life back into the most iconic keyboard instruments of all time, V Collection is the ultimate creativity launchpad, and an essential studio tool for the modern music producer."

Christmas songs on Fairlight | Arturia CMI V

In 1980, the Fairlight CMI turned heads with the introduction of digital sampling. It was an expensive instrument, if memory serves me right about $100,000. It helped define the sound of the 80s. Now you can get this sound in a VST plugin, thanks to the newly released Arturia CMI V, part of the Arturial V Collection 6."

Modular Performance: Elegiac Theme

Published on Dec 18, 2017 Mike Thomas

"This piece grew out of a faster thing I had worked on for a few days, but got frustrated with. I decided to slow things down and see how it worked.

Ornament & Crime is in Harringon 1200 (chord) mode, and sending v/oct to the Verbos HO, Sputnik Oscillator, and Elements. Chord changes and inversions are driven by Verbos Voltage Multistage.

Mutable Instruments Frames is in sequenced mode, modulating several Elements parameters and driving octave changes on the O&C.

At some point it struck me to hold down the Gate button on Elements and wiggle the Flow and Blow knobs. Additional modulation of Elements' tone is provided by FM from Ripples in self-oscillating mode.

The HO and the Sputnik Osc are fed to Streams in (red) vactrol mode, and on to Clouds' left and right channels. Clouds is in Parasite looping delay mode.

Various modulation provided by Qu-Bit Chance, Batumi, and Sputnik WCRS.

Recorded direct to Sony PCMD50. No post-processing. Video recorded on a Sony A6000 with Sony/Zeiss 35/2.8."

"DRINK THE CORPSE VOMIT PRESENTS - GORE GAS

Patch Notes:

More guitar tones made from scratch. Raw tones through a few ER-301 Convolution units sound really convincing to my ears. The pick sounds are pitched independently to the sustained notes adding further depth.

The sounds for each of the 2 'guitar' voices are 4 voice polyphonic and triggered with the new Bump unit to let the notes ring out. I think this is called 'hocketing' and works similarly to the Intellijel Shifty. The lead voice is played badly by hand, the supporting voice is sequenced by the ER-101 via the ER-102 real time record function.

The lead voice is through the Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water and Lofi Junky. The supporting voice is through the Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl 2.

Morphagene is graining a pre-prepared 'string' section of some wavefolded sines. Into a Cwejman saturation chain ( MMF-6 etc. )

Each separate track is printed to an Orion 32 via a Praxis Snake Charmer - A pristine audio route that is wasted on this filth."
