Improvisation LXX: DSI Poly Evolver Ethereal Pad

Published on Sep 4, 2016 Sacred Synthesis

"This is a rather long piece, showcasing a number of sounds - some old, and one new.

The reedy organ type patch is the Prophet '08, as is the high-pitched square waveform patch that repeats the main theme. The ethereal pad, naturally, is the Poly Evolver Keyboard, doing what it does best. I used this assortment of sounds because they offered a variety of contrasts, which allowed for relative clarity of parts, no matter which two at any point I played together. The particular timbres and pitch ranges meant the parts would always be distinguishable.

The PEK pad may sound familiar, but it's a new sound. The Evolver's digital wave shapes cover a plethora of timbres, and each one is distinctive enough when used statically. But I find that, when resonance and 2-pole filter sweeps are added, many of them begin to sound similar to each other. Ah well. The differences do exist, but perhaps it takes an exacting ear to appreciate such nuances. He who has ears, let him hear.

Musically, the piece consists of a simple melody repeated with little variation, interspersed with long dreamy segments; basically, Prophet '08 A sections and Poly Evolver B sections, back and forth. Frequent augmented fifths are used, giving the music a restlessness.

Hypersynth Xenophone Demos & Mini Review by jdxa-knight

"Short demos of the fantastic HYPERSYNTH XENOPHONE, a monophonic analog synth with so many features that you better check the complete list at I did a very fast cut demo of some of my own patches and patterns, but be sure, this machine is capable of endless unbelievable sounds!"

via jdxa-knight:

"Since the online demos, so far, of the HYPERSYNTH XENOPHONE are showcasing more of the 'nice' side of this unbelievable monophonic analog synth, I started to record some demos of patches and patterns I programmed on it. In fact, I have 2 XENOPHONES now, as you can do so much with it, from 'normal' synth sounds, to quite unusual percussion sequences, from shattering bass, to very 'proggy' melodic stuff.

Still, after a month, I am learning, exploring, and discovering new things every day. I cannot remember another synth that I became addicted to like this one. The demos are cut very fast, with very short snippets, and mostly the sounds are quite banging - but that's how I like to work with it - if you want to do softer ones: it can be done!

Me, I like to put the XENOPHONE through my Fender Dual Showman with a 15" cab, so you can imagine we got things rocking a bit. ;)

Iman and his crew do a great job - like introducing new features like Duophony in OS updates. Soon you might be able to download the latest OS which will feature, for example, the possibility to shift the sequencer lines (NOTE, VELOCITY, AUX1, AUX2) together, independently, and in combinations of 2, a feature, that not only lets you put the pattern in context to your other machines, but also lets you create instant variations of grooves with loopable envelopes, lot's of waveforms, filter types, arpeggiator, sequencer, fm, ring mod, mod matrix to name just a few. The guys behind it think about everything to make this a very smart und super creative machine. It is also compact (Elektron size) and despite some menu diving, it is super easy and fast to operate, and it has a uniquie, creative, and uncomplicated workflow.

If you don't know the XENOPHONE yet, you really should have a look at its feature list at I honestly think there are very, very few synths that let you do, what this synthesizer does. It has a sound of its own, but we use it, for example, together with classics like the Odyssey MK1, 2Voice, and Voyager. It is an absolute perfect combination for all kinds of detroitish, industrial, electronic drones, dub, and whatever music.

I hope you enjoy this very small glimpse into the endless universe of the HYPERSYNTH XENOPHONE, check it out, it's one of a kind !"

"(S1 / E4) Supplyframe DesignLab opened its doors this July to four creative resident teams building hardware projects in Art, Design, Technology, and Science. The new series 'Open Source' follows DesignLab residents step by step in their creations. Episode 4 explores resident Tim Trzepacz and the creation of his music hardware synthesizer the NanoEgg. After successfully launching a software synth developed for the Nintendo, Tim has begun the journey creating a fully analog hardware synthesizers."

"'I also do crafty stuff like display stands for my product and portable stages and such,' Trzepacz says. 'I love performing, and will play music anywhere. I’m really active in the greater Los Angeles chiptune scene, and for that, I need to make interfaces to do stuff on Arduino and Propeller boards.'

Now with this multi-part design for a synthesizer controller keyboard, Trzepacz says he wanted to create a modular design which would allow designers to 3D print as many sections as they need."

Sine wave from a self-oscillating Doepfer A-108 VCF8 going into a A-135-1 QVCA and then further processed with a Zoom MS-70CDR.

Frequency and volume are controlled by hand movement with a Koma Kommander motion controller via it's CV outputs.
Like a simple theremin.

I wanted to try a minimal patch, otherwise I would have added a slew limiter or two.

One person motion controller is another persons D BEAM..
