New tbar Eurorack Module from Cat Full of GHOSTS

Published on May 2, 2017

"The tbar is a unique unipolar/bipolar variable voltage source and attenuator made by Cat Full of Ghosts Electronics. It boasts beautiful white and gold pcb front panel, walnut stained bamboo ply and matte black bolts. The tbar also boasts a visual feedback led under the + sign so you can monitor the cv you are passing in attenuator mode.

This module will make you feel like you are flying a space ship. It has a smooth motion a firm throttle and solid construction.

The tbar allows for more nuanced control of cv parameters. Why twiddle a cramped knob when you can slide a tbar? It is great for performance and studio use.

The output can be configured to: 0-5v, -5-5v, 0-9v or -5-9v via jumpers on the underside.

This unit is 6hp wide and 51mm deep. It draws current relative to what it is driving but you can expect around 40-50ma on the +12 and -12 rails.

"Using all 4 voices of the Elektron Analog Four to make a complete track. Tracks 1 and 2 have p-locked kick and hits along with some melodies. The third track is the bass line and track 4 is used for background melodies. Also using the on board chorus feedback to mess with first and second track.

The Elektron Analog Four is a powerhouse born of the analog and digital audio worlds colliding. Creating analog sounds are a breeze to create with the Analog Four. Program your patches with precision, or design sounds as you go along making your tracks. With a huge sonic range, entire songs can be created entirely from scratch with the Analog Four.

"All features work fully and have been properly checked.

Programmer and patch memory are all fully working.

Very little wear and minor marking from normal use.

HISTORY / SPEC / CONDITIONS

This is the all discrete version which means it uses discrete circuitry for the VCO's, VCF, VCA and for the Envelope Generators, similar to the SEM modules.

Later OB-1's replaced this circuit with CEM 3310 IC's, the same as the OB-X. Apparently only 200 were made and this is number 59.

Twin discrete VCO's with great features such as continuously variable wave shapes and sub oscillators, cross modulation, switchable 2 or 4 pole filter.

It is the first truly programmable synth with 8 non volatile patch memories, all the black topped knobs indicate that their values can be stored into memory and the grey topped knobs are the ones that can't."

Moogfest Announces Suzanne Ciani as the 2017 Moog Innovation Award Recipient

via Moog Music

"The 2017 Moog Innovation Award will be presented to Suzanne Ciani at Moogfest 2017, the annual music, art and technology festival in Durham, North Carolina. This award recognizes her 45 plus years of genre-defying work that exemplifies the bold, innovative spirit of Bob Moog. Past recipients include visionary artists like Gary Numan, Devo, Brian Eno, Bernie Worrell, and Thomas Dolby, and synth designers like Herb Deutsch.

Ciani, the first woman to receive the award, superseded many of her male contemporaries as a synthesist, sound designer, and composer. Well known as an early protege and long-time devotee of Don Buchla, and a friend of Bob Moog, her use of synthesizers created entirely new sounds that opened minds around the globe to electronic music as a valid form of expression. She is a five-time Grammy nominated composer and the first woman to score a Hollywood film. Her work has been featured in countless commercials, video games, and feature films.

Today, Ciani continues to inspire generosity, curiosity, and experimentation for a resurgent, multi-generational community of synth-enthusiasts and electronic music fans. Ciani’s 4-hour durational performance at Moogfest 2016 modulated between a rolling quadraphonic soundscape, stories about her early days working in New York, and tips for operating rare Buchla synths while spatializing audio. Ciani returns to Moogfest 2017 to receive the Moog Innovation award, where she will perform and be celebrated in a workshop, featured conversation as well as host a screening of a recently released documentary about her innovative life in electronic music.

Additionally, we are pleased to have more voices added to the choir at Moogfest...

Comedians often are the reflexive lens of culture, giving uplifting commentary to our often complex world. With this spirit in mind, comedian and actor Hannibal Buress will be joining us as the comedic lens and moderator in two conversations: One with the wildly inventive hip-hop producer & lyricist Flying Lotus, and another with psych-pop trio Animal Collective and legendary 1970’s synth pioneers and psych outfit, Syrinx.

Chicago based experimental song stylists Circuit de Yeux will be added to this year’s line-up, bringing her conversely expressionate sense of abstract pop to the Moogfest stage.

Details in via the creator of miniMO:

"Just wanted to let you know of a modular synthesizer I'm developing, miniMO. It's 8-bit, open-everything, and I've designed both a PCB-based version and a 3D printed version where everything is printed except for the components, including the breadboard (no soldering skills required).

You can take a look at both models here, and here, listen to some demos here, and all the code, designs, and parts are available both through github and thingiverse.

I built miniMO with the aim to make a modular system as affordable as possible, so that people, especially kids, can see what it is about. All the modules have an ATtiny85 at their core, and it is very easy to program them with the Arduino IDE. Also, the modules are all identical: if you have three units, you can program three oscillators, or one oscillator, one LFO and one filter, or any other combination of the available programs. I have already programmed all the (in my opinion) basic synthesis blocks, and I'm actively developing new ones."

Very cool!

Future Retro Transient triggered with a Microphone and Oscillator

Published on May 15, 2017 FutureRetroSynths

"For fun I hooked up a microphone to a little mixer, then ran the output of the mixer into the Transient's Trig In jack. After adjusting the output level of the mic, why yes you can trigger the Transient sounds with audio such as clapping or snapping your fingers. If that works, why not try talking into the mic? Well at times it is almost intelligible, and would probably sound better mixing the dry signal of my voice with the Transient's output.

And then I test out just how fast the Transient will respond to audio rates using the Oscillator from the XS routed to the Transient's Trig In. Often more interesting if the oscillator is being modulation by some additional source, as I am doing here with the LFO from the XS.

And finally I show it can be fun to take and LFO syncing to our clock, and change the rate of the LFO controlling the mix of voices in the Transient.

I'm sure there are lots of interesting results you will obtain with the Transient being controlled by the plethora of modules you already have in your Eurorack system."

"Dial as deeply as you'd care to with this hardware (Pacarana) and software (license for Kyma7) system. Studio kept, less than a year old. Carefully shipped in original shipping container.

The most powerful sound design workstation on the planet — that’s what Electronic Musician magazine called the Kyma sound design environment. Future Music called it the Holy Grail of sound design. Kyma’s effectiveness arises from its unique set of algorithms, the ease with which you can create endless combinations of those algorithms, and the unprecedented degree of real-time responsive control over the sound parameters.

The Pacarana is a small but powerful multiprocessor computer that sits unobtrusively alongside your Mac or PC and does all the sound synthesis and processing. Like any computer, the function of the Pacarana is defined by its software. Unlike other computers, the Pacarana doesn’t have to run a huge general-purpose operating system with elaborate GUIs and multiple independent processes that can interrupt each other at any time. With the Pacarana, all compute cycles are dedicated to sound; you don’t have to share it with any other tasks. The Pacarana was designed specifically for doing sound computation. At Symbolic Sound, audio signal processing is our first priority and our only priority. When you have a computer dedicated entirely to capturing, processing, and synthesizing sound, you have the luxury of being able to do things right. We don’t cut corners, and you can hear the difference."

KUP CD: http://bit.ly/2qk3our

"'Krautpark' is the first single off a debut album from Pin Park. Pin Park are a duo consisting of Maciek Bączyk (Kristen, Robotobibok) and Maciek Polak. Together they explore the nether regions of improvised electronic music mixing influences ranging from Cluster to Boards of Canada.

'We've known each other for years now. We met when Bączyk's synth broke down just before he was supposed to enter the studio with Robotobibok and he was looking for a replacement. I agreed to lend him mine,' recalls Polak. 'But it was only two years ago when we started improvising together,' adds Bączyk. 'Both of us own EMS synths and these are not that common. We didn't set ourselves any goals, the band started by assuming two EMS's are better than one. We plugged them in and the result will soon land in your hands in the form of 'Krautpark' album,' recalls Polak.

'EMS synths have an unique system of connections between counterparts - you can do that by inserting a pin that allows for connections. As well, EMS constructors managed to assemble a perfect set of parts that resulted in a wonderful sound. Thanks to all of this, the Synthi resembles a complete musical instrument, much like a cello', explains Polak. 'I personally enjoy Synthi AKS mainly due to the fact that I'm not what you would call a keyboard player,' adds Bączyk. 'I'm not that interested in being innovative just for the sake of innovation,' he says.

Pin Park's album is named after one of the tracks that recalls the golden age of German electronic music. 'This one seemed pretty obvious although you need to know that our aim is not to create a genre-oriented music. We just turn the knobs and hope for the right energy to arrive. Once everything is in its place, we start recording. But it needs to be mentioned that I feel some kind of affinity for bands such as Cluster, Harmonia and Kraftwerk. I really like the approach Roedelius and Moebius had - living up to the idea of Joseph Beuys 'Every man an artist'. They chose their tools (instruments) and recorded a couple of amazing albums. Their music is really intuitive and void of any false additions. It's just free improvising and pure, surreal psychedelia,' explains Bączyk.

'Krautpark' is a largely improvised album. Mostly, due to the fact that Bączyk and Polak need around 15-20 minutes of playing before learning if the direction they're taking is the right one. 'If it is, we quickly agree on who will be taking the lead role, we turn the volume down and start recording. We usually take one approach, though a multitrack one to facilitate mixing later in the process,' says Bączyk.

"The E-mu Morpheus was an innovative machine at the time of its release in 1993. The big news was the introduction of its "z-plane" filters, that had the capability of "changing smoothly their function" over time. This translates in superb synth sweeps, sci-fi swoops, alien soundscapes, human voice emulations, and lots more.

The Morpheus contains 8MB of 16-bit samples as the starting points for its sounds. There are 197 (!) filters to choose from, and many of these are truly phenomenal.

There are three banks of 128 sounds, and an optional data card. The hyperpresets allow you to stack or split up to 32 sounds in a patch - very powerful. A bit hidden in the MidiMap there are also 28 effects, including reverb, delay, chorus, phaser and flanger. Other features include three sets of stereo outputs, user definable alternate tuning, and extensive MIDI implementation"

3 Modules #7: STO, Ears, Brain Seed

Published on May 15, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"This one is pretty basic, but uses a neat trick with the STO to create amplitude modulation without the use of a VCA.

Patch notes:
Ears is used as a manual trigger. The gate output (which only fires on extra hard hits) is connected to the Brain Seed, cycling through a random eight step sequence. This sequence is quantized to a minor scale, and sent to STO's V/Oct input.

Ears' envelope output is sent to STO's "shape" input. When this parameter is at 0, the output is a sine wave in opposite phase of the dedicated sine wave output. This means that the two outputs cancel each other out when mixed directly. As Ears' envelope moves the shape parameter, it produces a change in amplitude as well as timbre, because it adds harmonics that aren't cancelled by the sine wave.

I'm using a Strymon Big Sky for some added delay/reverb.

Thanks for watching!"
