New Moog DIY Project Coming to This Year's MOOGFEST 2018 ENGINEER WORKSHOP

Update: And it will be the Sub-Harmonicon.

Previous years brought us the BFAM and DFAM. What will this year bring?

via Moog Music:

"Work alongside Moog engineers to build and take home your own unique electronic instrument, currently unreleased and designed especially for the 2018 Moogfest Engineer Workshop.

Over the coming weeks, we will reveal the details of our Moogfest Engineer Workshop, including info on this year’s build. The workshops will fill up quickly once the build specs are made public, so reserve your Engineer Pass this week to guarantee your spot.

The Engineer Pass is a special Moogfest ticket that includes an exclusive synth-building workshop and VIP access to this year’s festival in Durham, NC. The workshop is led by Moog engineers, who guide participants as they learn the foundations of analog synthesis and build their own unreleased Moog instrument. No experience is necessary, but basic soldering knowledge is recommended. Space is limited. Click here to reserve your spot at the Moogfest 2018 Engineer Workshop."

7th Annual Moog Circuit Bending Challenge

"Wake up, Benders, Modders, and Hardware Hackers; it's time for the 7th Annual Moog Circuit Bending Challenge.

Moog Music was born when a young Bob Moog started tinkering with electronic circuitry. As a boy, Moog built small radios, amplifiers, and Theremins in his basement workshop with his father. The rest, as you know, is history.

Click here for the details of this year’s challenge. Enter by April 13th for a chance to win a pair of passes to Moogfest 2018, where the top 3 entries will compete for top honors and Moog Synthesizers."

Paia 5700P, 4-Voice Analog Percussion Synth "The Drum"

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This listing is for one extremely rare Paia "The Drum" 5700P Analog Percussion Synthesizer. It is essentially a cab filled with 4 identical modules that can generate a sound that is suited to percussive analog tones. It can be triggered via any sound source, including other drums, eurorack, a drum machine, etc. (voltage trigger OR audio into the 1/4" jack). Each voice also has CV in that tracks across a few octaves so they can also be used as a stand-alone synth voice for basslines, melodies, etc. if so desired.

The sound can be described as very raw and weighty, similar to other early analog percussion units like the Simmons SDSV and 808. This unit works very well for it's age, though some pots could use some cleaning."

Custom Built Modular Synthesizer Using CEM Chipset

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Custom system [built] back in the '80s using CEM chips on PAiA boards. This synth uses banana plugs to connect the various modules. Many cords are included.

The modules included are: 3 VCOs, 1 CCF, 2 ADSRs, and one dual VCA. The chips are all by CEM, the same chips used by many '80s synths (MOOG, Sequential, many more). These chips are hard to find and just the value of these rare chips make this listing valuable. All chips are in sockets. Also included is a simple 2 channel passive mixer and some multiples.

Also included is a 2 amp bipolar power supply. This is also custom built using good components and housed in an aluminum box.

The synth modules are in a standard 19" rack case. This listing does NOT include any keyboard or other controller. There is only a trigger button. A keyboard controller or sequencer with control voltage outputs will be needed unless you want to just experiment with voltages from the VCOs.

This is an item for someone who wants to tinker and experiment. I used it as a bass voice along with other synths and it worked great for that purpose. Like any modular synth there is a world of sonic possibilities."

"This video shows a quick jam with the Arturia MiniBrute 2S and the RackBrute 3U which connects to the MiniBrute 2S with its included stand. The 2S has a powerful sequencer which is being used to sequence the MiniBrute and some of the eurorack modules as well as clocking the Varigate 4+ which is adding more sequencing to the modular. The eurorack modular is producing all of the drum sounds with Basimilus Iteritas Alter, Chimera, Pico Drums, Entity Percussion Synthesizer, and Mysteron. A Sinc Iter adds an extra oscillator and a Pico Dsp is used for delay.

Prophet '08 Sawtooth Solo Patch #2

Published on Mar 5, 2018 Sacred Synthesis

"From a previous session. Just another typical strings and sawtooth solo improvisation. The accompaniment is played on the Poly Evolver Keyboard, and the solo is played on a single Prophet '08.

I would put the Prophet '08's sawtooth solo patch in the "thin-ish" category, alongside the ARP sound. But this is not at all a negative characterization. After all, an oboe belongs in this category as well, and yet, has a beautiful and mellifluous character. I only mean that the Prophet '08 tone is definitely not a Model D type of tone. And I'm fine with that. It allows the patch to sound crisp and clear in a mix.

Instrumentation:
DSI Prophet '08 Keyboard
DSI Poly Evolver Keyboard
DSI Poly Evolver Rack

Bass:
DSI Evolver Desktop
Hammond XPK 200L Pedalboard

External Effects:
Lexicon MX300 for reverb
Alesis Nanoverb 2 for delay

"I've added a vintage stereo spring reverb to my Emu Modular system. I bought the original Emu face panels ages ago on Vemia for pennies, and also an old 1980s D&R spring reverb. I got my friend Ross to wire up the Emu panels to the reverb unit, and also add CV to the really nice sounding eq that the unit has. Heres a patch with it integrated into the full system, using the memory modules for sequencing. Oh and some seals I filmed at the zoo last week. 014//Thread of Life - modular synth performance

Published on Mar 5, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"I see a lot of modular performances that aren't very musical, so here's my answer to them. I enjoyed making this, and will be doing more of this type of video!

Basic details:
- The higher Mother 32 supplies main melody.
- The lower Mother 32 supplies the arpeggio.
- The AJH Synth VCO supplies the bass (I change the bass note by pressing 'cycle' on Maths, with the End Of Rise output patched into the linear FM input of the VCO and tuned with attenuation).
- I'm improvising the melody on a Microbrute which I have modified to have individual wave outputs.
- The Maths in the large case supplies the envelope for the white noise hits. I plug the cables in halfway through.

Shades, which is the module on the far right, is controlling the filter cutoffs of both Mother 32s and the amount of randomness affecting the cutoff of the arpeggio. I have the bass volume controlled by the VC Mix knob on the lower Mother 32. All this helps me change parameters without having to reach through the tangled mess of cables - a godsend for performing this!

Cosmetically in very good condition hardly any marks or scratches, keyboard bushings are good and keys functioning well, all sliders are clean and are gliding freely with no gunked up residue typical of ARPs from this era,the sockets are clean and rust free. "Farfisa Syntorchestra 1975 synthesizer krautrock strings rare analogue synth
This sale is for one mid-70s vintage Farfisa Synthorchestra excellent functional condition. It is a 230V European model, wood version.

The Farfisa (Stereo) Syntorchestra is an Italian keyboard. Basically it's a simple monophonic (preset) synthesizer combined with a polyphonic section. These two sections can be also combined and slightly detuned (intervals are also possible) to sound like a 2-VCO monophonic synth. It is simple, and it sounds great - especially with a delay effect! You can tweak the parameters in the synth section a bit (envelope, LFO, VCF cutoff, resonance switch). It has single outputs for the polyphonic and monophonic section.
It produces sounds, which you don't get from other synths. It sounds really vintage, like classic electronic music from the seventies!

Cosmetic condition is very good for an instrument 40 years old! This is the wood version.

It sounds wonderfully rich and vintage and nails that mid-70s Krautrock tone. (it was used by Klaus Schulze on his album Moondawn and by Vangelis among other famous artists). It really comes to life with some delay and/or reverb, and the separate outputs for the mono and poly section allow you to process them independently."

Roland TR-808 - Roland Cloud - quick demo

Published on Mar 6, 2018 Alba Ecstasy

"Next day after Roland announced their new Roland TR-8S, the Roland Cloud version of the legendary TR-808 is on my computer! This is just a quick demo, passing through the presets, nothing more."

You might remember the NAMM demo. Roland's cloud version of the TR-808 is now available.

"Features

The Thing That Goes Boom
In 1980, the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer was released to an unsuspecting and somewhat bewildered public. To many at the time, its tweakable analog tones didn’t exactly deliver “traditional” or "realistic" drum sounds. It wasn’t until after a few adventurous musicians and producers got their hands on the TR-808 and started tweaking those knobs that the world would feel the impact it would leave on music forever. For decades since, the sizzling hi-hats and snappy snare, the clicky rim shot, the unmistakable cowbell, and yes—that booming bass drum—have been heard on worldwide hits and underground classics. Its influence is so deep that it’s been name-dropped in famous tracks, had albums dedicated to it, bands named after it, and is even the subject of a feature-length documentary film.

That 8 Oh 8
The Roland TR-808 is one of the most revered and sought-after electronic musical instruments of all time—and its influence only continues to grow. New musical genres make heavy use of the 808, with some utilizing it as the main instrument and defining sound of the style. The Roland TR-808 is so desirable that original units sell for thousands of dollars on the used market and it's often been imitated with sound-alike sample-packs, less-than-faithful apps, and knock-offs. But the 808 is a complex beast and far more than the sum of its parts. Its iconic user interface and the unique personality created by the sounds responding and interacting with each other are vitally important to conjuring up that authentic TR-808 mojo. And you know it when you hear it.

The Return of The King
Using our proprietary Analog Circuit Behavior technology, we’ve painstakingly recreated the original analog circuits that are the essence of the TR-808’s distinct sound. All the nuance and detail are accounted for resulting in a living, breathing Roland TR-808 for your DAW. This software adaption not only sounds and acts true-to-life, but it injects new and exciting enhancements into the classic 808 formula. Each pattern has eight variations so you can create evolving sequences that keep things interesting. The classic 16-step "TR-REC" sequencer can be expanded to include a sequencer lane for each drum instrument so you can program faster and more fluidly. The sequencer has adjustable flams and sub-steps so you can create detailed fills and ratcheting sequences. And each instrument has its own “last step” and shuffle settings so you can play with timing, experiment with polyrhythms, and dial in just the right groove for your tracks. You can even drag patterns from the TR-808 directly into your DAW as MIDI or audio clips!
