Hydronium + Guitar Pedal = Awesome Acid Distortion

"The Rare Waves Hydronium has an effect send/return between the filter and the VCA, perfect for pluging in a dirty, grungy guitar pedal without drowning in noise. I didn't think I had a distortion pedal until I remembered about my old ZOOM G1Xn guitar effect.

As before the Deluge sequences the Hydronium, and plays all the drums and percussions. "

New SoundForce DCO Eurorack Module

SoundForce DCO - short demo video Published on May 6, 2019 SoundForce

"SoundForce introduces a digitally controlled oscillator module for Eurorack

The SoundForce DCO is an oscillator for Eurorack based on the architecture of the Juno-60/106 oscillator section. It is a modern homage to that sound using technology from the future. It provides true analog waveforms with digital stability.

Some tech-talk:
A DCO is not an all-analog VCO but also not a digital oscillator. It’s an hybrid design that combines the best of both. Similarly to some VCO’s, the DCO generates its core waveform, the saw wave, by charging a capacitor in an op-amp integrator configuration. A VCO will restart the waveform cycle when the signal has reached its maximum amplitude. But the DCO starts an new cycle when a micro-controller, a small computer chip, commands it to. The micro-controller also controls the rate at which the capacitor is charging, hence the frequency of the oscillator. As with a digital oscillator, the DCO acquires the CV input voltages and turns them into numbers that will later set the frequency of the oscillator. This is done inside the micro-controller using 16 bits sigma-delta analog to digital converters. All signals are true analog signals: the PULSE wave is derived from the SAW wave using a comparator and the SUB oscillators are generated using a flip-flop IC. Furthermore, the use of a very modern micro-controller with built-in 32 bits timers have improved the frequency accuracy a lot compared to the original design.

If you want to dive deeper in the technicalities of DCOs, check out this video from GOLT! [posted here]

Features:
The SoundForce DCO features 10 slide pots (faders) reminiscent of the vintage Roland synths. 5 sound sources are available: SAW, PULSE, SUB1 (1 octave lower), SUB2 (2 octaves lower) and NOISE. The built-in mixer allows you to mix them together using the faders and the MIX output jack. The PULSE has manual pulse width control, as well as PWM with a CV input and an attenuator. An FM input is also available with an attenuator. The oscillator can be hard synced to another oscillator using the SYNC input.

Specifications:
– 16HP
– Frequency range : 20Hz – 14kHz
– Depth: 24mm (+ power connector)
– Power: +12V 82mA, -12V 26mA
– V/OCT input range -3 to 7V
– FM input range -5V to 5V
– PWM input range -5V to 5V

Price and availability:
The module will be shown on the SoundForce booth this week at Superbooth (booth O501) along with some more upcoming modules. It’s available right now to pre-order at 229 euros incl. VAT (189 euros outside of Europe) on the SoundForce webshop. It will be shipping in June."

Check out the auto created search terms on the left typing in "elektron digit"  You should see Elektron Digitone Keys.  I captured that screenshot myself after receiving a tip from Soviet Space Child. I've never performed a search on Thommann's website before, nor have I ever searched for Elektron Digitone Keys, so that isn't my search history. It's suggested results from Thommann. Now the question of course is, is it based on their backend list of available and coming products, or is it based on the common searches on the site? We'll find out come SUPERBOOTH next week. Until then, listen to Elektron's teaser here.

WMD Black Panels WHAT!?! - WMD is moving to a new look!

Published on May 6, 2019 WMD

"In order to provide our user base with the best possible quality product possible, we decided that it was time to bring our panel making process in house. This is one of the last processes that we had been outsourcing as it is a very difficult thing to get right.

We finally landed at a process that we are extremely excited to share.

From now on, our modules will all feature a virtually indestructible panel made of black anodized aluminum with engraved artwork and lettering. For now, we are only offering newly build modules as black versions. We do not have the time or resources to offer a black replacement panel for each module however this may become an option down the road. As we run out of things, we will be filling new orders with black versions, starting with Crucible, Fracture, Chimera, and of course, METRON.

We will be offering this process as a service for companies looking to make the switch. Please email info@wmdevices.com for more information! We cannot offer one-off custom work at this time. Production quantity inquiries only please!

Thank you all for your support over the past 12 years and for your patience while we make this transition. We truly feel like this is going to take our build quality to the next level."

The ADDAC 307 Heart Sensing module comes with a heart rate monitor you can connect to your finger or earlobe and you get your heart rate as a gate signal on the trigger output. You also get an envelop follower and inverted envelope follower style output which generates a slew/lag version of the gate. 14 plus 6

Published on May 3, 2019 Oliver G

"Short impression of two wonderful modern analog synthesizers, the limited masterpiece Vermona ’14 and the modern classic Sequential Prophet 6. German and US craftmanship combined.

The Vermona ’14 improvisation focusses on the expressional capabilities of the instrument (via mod-wheel and aftertouch). The patch is starting with only a single (!) VCO. Afterwards, the first of two sub-oscillators and then the second VCO playing a third above the first are blended in.

The delay on the ’14 is provided by a Source Audio Nemesis Delay stomp-box.

Starting in the second third of the track, the Sequential Prophet 6 plays a sequence that has been pre-programmed with the patch. The Prophet is MIDI-synced to the Roland TR-8S which also provides the drum track.

ARP Quadra Synthesizer

via this auction

"This ARP Quadra was serviced a few years ago by MIKE Metz at Thesis Audio Service in Kansas. After I got it back from him, it was fully functional and beautiful.

It is still beautiful, just not fully functional anymore. I know that the sliders are all intact, the membrane switches all work, could only need just a little bit of money to get it running.

Since Mike worked on this last, I would recommend sending it to him for service.

This Quadra has a unique modification. The switch on the left side, which was professionally installed, allows you to take the chorus effect out of the mono signal which is pretty cool. An extra feature added that you do not see on any Quadras that I have seen.

I was told this Quadra was once owned by John Elefante of Kansas before he joined Kansas. I believe Mike even told me that he worked on this synth while he toured with Kansas at one point back in the day.

This unit comes with an anvil case for safe shipping, and a spare custom programmed CPU."

"A little object of desire in the 90s, still very nice today!

Bought this as a compact MIDI controller, with an analogue mono sound source as a bonus. Thought it was broken, and found another, turns out I should have just read the manual..

So, a few quirky details about the Bass Station..

There are 2 envelopes for filter and VCA, that share the same controls, you flick the switch to edit the corresponding one. This is fairly obvious from the panel, but the same thing applies to the Modulation section, a switch changes the destination of the shared knobs.

Also, modulation controls are +/-, so need to be set at 12:00 for zero modulation.

Shakmat announces 6 new modules at Superbooth ‘19

Shakmat announces 6 new modules at Superbooth ‘19 including three 1U/Tile utilies for imminent release

Shakmat will be presenting six new modules at the annual modular synthesizer fair known as Superbooth. The 6 new products include three 1U/ Tile format modules, two quadraphonic modules and a clever modulation/scene programmer.
Quadraphonic solutions

The Aeolus Seeds is dedicated to quadraphonic modulation and vector synthesis. Having a fully analog signal path through four VCAs driven by a handy quad digital modulation source, this module is able to easily create automatic movements in quadraphonic space thanks to a very simple interface. Additional features include an assignable CV output (which can deliver the distance from the center, the angle of the modulation and so on...) and an audio sum output turning the Aeolus Seeds into an animated vector synthesis tool.

The Aeolus Mixer is an useful unity quadraphonic mixer allowing to sum up to three quadraphonic sources and two stereo sources in 6 hp. The module has additional outputs for 5.1 compatibility!

The Harlequin makes a scene

The Harlequin's Context brings an innovative approach to presetting, sequencing and modulation. Four channels of any modulation type (offset, envelope, lfo or random) can be stored in scenes and then manually recalled, addressed by CV, sequenced and even morphed. Useful for presetting, and very creative for unique modulation designs, the Harlequin's is a versatile tool for live musicians and studio nerds.
New 1U product line

New modules also include 1U format utility modules. Released as 1U Intellijel format, those modules are Tiles / Pulp Logic compatible – thanks to alternative panels sold separatly and 2 power connectors (classic 5 x 2 pin euro, 3 pin Pulp Logic style). The Shakmat 1U line, compact and utilitarian, includes :

• Tessitura Tailor : a 10hp octave switch allowing transposing from -2 to +2 octaves

• Time Apprentice : two clock dividers with adjustable division perfect to clock / reset sequencers for example.

• Dual VCA : two high end THAT Corp. exponential VCAs packed in 8hp

All modules will be in our demo case

NIKOL DRUMS SYNTHESIS

Published on May 6, 2019 Bastl Instruments

"This time Nikol explores the much-discussed topic of drum synthesis in the eurorack
modular domain. She starts with explaining the simplest ways of creating drums
and percussive sounds and then moves on to a complex three layer drum
patch that is animated by a multichannel sequencer resulting in interesting monophonic
beats.

The animation is basically defining eight different values at each step of the
sequencer, and sending those value groups (or macros, presets) to a drum engine, that
consists of a VCO a noise source, two VCAs a high-pass filter, three voltage-controlled envelopes, and a sampler. Values like volumes, pitch, envelope lengths, and noise filtering are all controlled by the sequencer.

Drums are an essential part of many kinds of music. By building your own drum engine
and beat animation, you can create a truly unique sounding rhythm section with its own
artifacts and kinks, advancing your experience and style."
