Tenzin Choegyal x Matt Corby - Improvised Session (Live from Happy)

video upload by Happy Mag

"✨ Matt Corby & Tenzin Choegyal Improvise for Live from Happy ✨

We’re still floating after this magical improvised session with the legendary Matt Corby and Tenzin Choegyal 🎶🔥

Two worlds collided, Matt’s soul-stirring harmonies met Tenzin’s transcendent Tibetan melodies, and wow, did we witness something special.

A raw, meditative, genre-defying moment that only these two could create. 🌀🙏 (And yes, we’re still recovering.)

Huge thanks to Pig Hog Cables for powering the magic behind the sound. ⚡️🔌

Buchla 200 Defect Processor 289

video upload by Memetune Studio

"A self playing patch on the Buchla 200 - using the astonishing Sputnik Defect Processor - which I am just learning how to use

It is a dual stereo audio processor and sound source based around the open-platform FV-1 reverb chip from Spin Semiconductor. However the FV-1 can be programmed to do lots more than reverb - you can create stereo delays, feedback loops and FM oscillators, frequency shifters, phasers, filters - basically any time-based effect, all with CV control. New algorithms can be made with a developer kit then stored on EPROM and loaded into the Buchla 289 Defect module

This one has the original set of 16 algorithms but I have a spare set of EPROMS that holds newly developed reverbs and delays based on the classic 224 early 80s algos by modwiggler maxl0rd (a very nice person because he sent me them for the cost of postage)

This module is a very interesting addition to my 200 series system and I look forward to exploring its potential in more depth"

Paradise 😇 (Moog Minitaur // Waldorf Streichfett // Roland S1 // Volca Beats // Mininova // NDLR)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"An unexpected impromptu performance with the same setup as my previous video, hope you'll enjoy it! ❤️

The NDLR is sequencing with:
Drone track: the Moog Minitaur (BASS)
Pad track: the Waldorf Streichfett (PADS)
Motif-1 track: the Roland S1 (ARP)
Motif-2 track: the Roland S1 (ARP)

The DRUMS are coming from the Korg Volca Beats and the LEAD is being played in real-time on the Novation Mininova.

00:00 Intro
01:07 Improvised Solo
02:40 Bridge
03:14 Outro

A couple of tricks I used here:

I used the STUTTER EFFECT of the Volca Beats as a delay here on only one voice (not the master bus). First it's on the Open Hi-Hat and then swapped to the Closed Hi-Hat (creating a sixteenth note rhythm without changing pattern)

I'm using one of the NDLR's LFO (Square wave) to modulate the octave of the PADS.

I've used the hidden CHORUS of the S-1 synth to create the wide ARP 😉"

Synth Spotting : Rabbit Trap - Official Trailer | Starring Dev Patel and Rosy McEwen

video upload by Magnolia Pictures & Magnet Releasing

"In theaters September 12.
http://rabbittrapfilm.com/

Seeking new inspiration and a fresh start, married musicians Daphne (Rosy McEwan) and Darcy (Dev Patel) move to the Welsh countryside to finish their new record. While collecting audio samples, Darcy inadvertently creates a field recording of mysterious sound never before heard by human ears. The discovery renews Daphne’s creative energy, but as the echoes of her music bleed into the surrounding landscape, ancient and malevolent woodland forces are disturbed. One day, a stranger arrives on their doorstep. The couple initially embraces the stranger, who helps them navigate and understand their new environment, but Darcy grows suspicious of his obsession. As jealousy and paranoia infect the makeshift family, the line between reality and myth begins to blur.

Starring Dev Patel, Rosy McEwen, Jade Croot
Directed by Bryn Chainey"

The Prophet VS was the last synthesiser to be released under the Sequential Circuits name. After the takeover by Yamaha in 1987, the following synthesisers were released under the Yamaha name.

Here is a demo track only made with the Sequential Prophet VS vector synthesizer from the year 1986. I use only self programmed sounds and the internal arpeggiator.

Sequential Circuits' last synthesiser in the 1980s was the Prophet VS, a hybrid synthesiser that was launched in 1986. It was the last synthesiser developed by Sequential Circuits before the takeover by Yamaha.

The Prophet VS was a digital synthesiser that differed from the company's previous analogue models. It was based on vector synthesis, a technique that made it possible to mix between different waveforms to create complex and versatile sounds. Although the Prophet VS was a digital synthesiser, it included a number of features that set it apart from other digital synthesizers of its time, such as its ability to change and manipulate sounds in real time.

Deuxd - Stereo Cross-Modulation VCF for Eurorack

video upload by Mehr Music Machines

"Deuxd (DUDE) is a dual filter that encourages stereo audio-rate modulation, experimentation and can easily be configured in number of ways.

• 2 Completely Independent LP/HP VCFs
• True stereo VCF with global cutoff control + offset per channel
• Mono to stereo signal processor
• Stereo to mono signal processor
• Variable width bandpass filter with dual resonant peaks
• Freaky feedback machine with 2 flavors of overdrive and FM
• Stereo pingable-thing
• Dual FM Oscillator / Drone

Audio Input 1 (left side) is normalled to Audio input 2 (right side). This let's you easily process 1 signal with two separate filters. Audio 1 is also normalled to FM input 2. To break either connection, simply patch a cable into the respective input jacks. Similarly, Audio input 2 is normalled to FM input 1. This means that each signal input is ready to frequency modulation the opposite side's filter cutoff. (pre XFM)

The top Frequency controls (top right and top left) act as the primary cutoff for each side's filler. Use the global Cutoff (large knob top center) to offset the position of both filter's cutoff position at the same time. The global cutoff control can be used in one of two modes: SYNC - This will change the filter's cutoff of both sides in parallel with one another. OPPOSE: when switched to Oppose, the right side filter will receive inverted control voltage from both the large cutoff knob and signal patched into the Cutoff jack.

When using the Sum (mono) output, you can switch between two flavors of diode clipping (Dirty and Filthy) :)

For bandpass operation, switch one side to High-pass and the other side to Lowpass (results change depending on which side is LP/HP) patch a signal into either filter's audio input, then patch the output the starting filter to the input of the other filter. You can now pull your audio from either the 2nd filter’s output or the SUM output for added harmonics.

The X-mod knob is hardwired, this circuit isolates the output from each side, sends one signal to the cutoff of the opposite side, and visa versa. (post XFM)

For dual pinging fun, patch a slow moving square wave into the audio inputs. the resonance controls should be at about 10:00, just before self oscillation. You will get different results depending on how the internal FM circuits are set. also experiment with pinging while in dual resonant peak bandpass config."

Erica Synths Introduces New Elektor Formant DIY Modular Synth

Maniac/Michael Sembello (Circuit Tracks Version)

video upload by Guinan

"Feeling a yearning for a bit of LinnDrum action I loaded up a bunch of samples and it occurred to me to try this song - a bit of a musical 'guilty pleasure' as it has such a distinctive rhythm. I put the song on, donned my legwarmers and had a bit of a 'spin' around the room to the track in my best 'Flashdance' impression. Straight away it became apparent it shouldn't be possible to do it on the Tracks as it has too many tracks. Bass, electric piano chords, arpeggio, melody...and a distinctive 80's guitar solo! Not to be deterred I shrank it down as much as I could and used the layering and extra voices hacks I've talked about elsewhere * and what you hear is the end result.

It was a fun challenge and I hope you enjoy the end result. All you hear was programmed into a single Circuit Tracks and played 'live' just recording the audio outs.

More details for synth nerds

The excellent ‪@CaptainPikant‬ had a great video breaking down how the rhythm track was constructed so I largely followed this guide.

• MANIAC - The most INSANE drum pattern of t... [below]

BPM 155bpm
Synth 1 - mono bass synth
Synth 2 - 'piano'ish patch playing chords, arepeggio and melody lines (at different velocities/ranges)
Drum 1- LM1 bass drum
Drum 2 - LM1 snare and sidestick
Drum 3 - LM1 hihats and combined HH and fake guitar (see below)
Drum 4 - LM1 cowbell and clap

The 'guitar' is faked I'm sorry. My lead guitar skills are not up to this (I did try!) and my friendly local 'shredder' was busy. I used instead the Native Instruments Electric Sunburst plug in instrument to fake a short solo and drenched it in guitar effects. I recorded to 4 bar loops with the hihat pattern duplicated along with them and then triggered the samples at the right moment on the hihat track."

MANIAC - The most INSANE drum pattern of the '80s | Drum Patterns Explained

video upload by Captain Pikant

"The drum pattern of Michael Sembello's 'Maniac' is positively insane. It's what you'd get if you made a Synthwave drum track, decided it wasn't complex enough, glitched it up with a tiny dash of Aphex Twin and then put a second drum track on top of that with over a dozen Tom fills for good measure. Pure '80s maximalism with two of the most iconic drum sounds of that era."

"The Sequential Circuits Prophet T8 is a flagship 8-voice analog polysynth renowned for its luxurious wooden keyboard with fully assignable polyphonic aftertouch, giving unparalleled expressive control over each note. Combined with its flexible modulation routing, rich analog tone, and premium build quality, it’s a dream instrument for players and sound designers seeking both power and nuance.

The synthesizer is in good cosmetic and functional condition. Factory presets have been loaded. One pot and two knobs are not original. The keybed action could benefit from restoration (new foam/felt, adjustment) as it feels a bit clunky and the lowest black key is sticking. This is the first video in my series on mastering the Roland S-1. In this episode, I cover the essential sound design features of this powerful little synth. Future videos will dive into advanced sound design, creative jamming techniques, sequencer tricks, and anything else you’d like to see.
2. Roland S-1 | Advanced Sound Design Tutorial | Master the S-1: Ep. 2
The S-1 has a hidden super power: Custom Waveforms. Using the oscillator draw function you can input your own custom waveforms to create new sounds you wouldn't expect from a mini-SH-101 clone. I have a few that I use all the time and I wanted to share them with you. I hope you enjoy!
3. Roland S-1 | Sequencing Tutorial | Master the S-1: Ep. 3
The Roland S-1 sequencer isn't the most advanced, but it offers a surprising amount of utility for its small size. For me, the S-1's sequencer is a quick and effective way to capture ideas and jam, in ways that even more advanced synths and grooveboxes don't always inspire. I get a lot of enjoyment from punching in patterns on the S-1 and using the tips and tricks I show in this video to create tracks and explore new ideas through jamming.

Weston Precision Audio: SV1 & SF1 | Full Demo and Review

video upload by Happy Mag

"Tasteful design and even tastier tone — that’s Weston Precision Audio! 🎛️
Met Devin at Buchla and Friends earlier this year and it was an absolute treat 🙌

Starting with the SV1: a dual stereo VCA with both vintage and clean paths — four VCAs in total 🔥
Vintage brings warm saturation with discrete transistors, while the clean side is modern, transparent, and tight 🎯
Run it in mono or stereo, link controls, bias your CV, and boost gain up to +6dB.
Need grit? Crank the input or flip the Overdrive switch for creamy distortion or sharp clipping 💥
And yes — zero-crossing detection eliminates clicks from fast envelopes. Smooth as 🧈

Next up: the SF1, a stereo or dual-mono VCF with two identical 4-pole filters.
Switch between LP, HP, BP — or tap into notch, all-pass, and phaser outputs too 🌈
Link the filters or keep them independent. Modulate everything, shape stereo motion, or use it as a sine oscillator with 1V/oct tracking 🎶
It’s a filter, it’s an oscillator, it’s a full-on sound design weapon 🧪

Head to WestonAudio.com to dive deeper.
And shoutout to Pig Hog for keeping the patch bay clean 🐗⚡️

Frap Tools: BRENSO | Full Demo and Review

video upload by Happy Mag

"The Frap Tools BRENSO is more than just a dual oscillator—it's a modern homage to the west coast synthesis tradition pioneered by Don Buchla in the 1970s. As a complex oscillator, BRENSO offers a dense web of internal modulation, wave shaping, and signal routing options that invite experimentation, creativity, and highly expressive sound design.

Let’s break down what makes BRENSO special—and why it’s a standout tool for modular synthesists and the perfect place to start Happy Mag's Synth Month 2025 journey!

🧠 What Is a Complex Oscillator?

In synthesis terms, “complex” usually refers to waveforms that go beyond simple shapes like sine, triangle, square, or sawtooth. These richer, more dynamic tones are achieved through audio-rate modulation—one oscillator affecting another at high speed to produce new, harmonically rich content.

To that end, BRENSO includes two triangle-core analog oscillators, each with four outputs. These oscillators are designed to interact, cross-modulate, and shape each other in ways that transform simple waveforms into entirely new sonic terrain.

🎨 We Love the Colour-Coded Interface!

One of BRENSO’s most elegant features is its colour-coded layout. This isn’t just for show—it reflects functional sections of the module, making navigation and patching intuitive:

🟢 Green Section – Frequency control for oscillator one
🟡 Yellow Section – Frequency control for oscillator two
⚪ White Section – Timbre shaping (via wavefolders and shapers)
🔴 Red Section – Amplitude control (via a four-quadrant multiplier for AM/RM)

These sections are organised spatially and visually, so once you understand the color scheme, you're halfway to mastering the module.

🔄 Modulation Without the Patch Cables

BRENSO encourages semi-normalled patching. Many modulation paths are internally routed by default using dashed lines on the panel. For example, the green sine wave is often pre-routed as a modulator for the yellow oscillator—no cable required.

This internal routing makes it easy to get rich interactions going quickly, but BRENSO never limits you: patching a cable into a jack overrides the normalization, giving you complete flexibility.

Erica Synths: Hexinverter Mutant Drums | Full Demo and Review

video upload by Happy Mag

"The Mutant Drum Line lives on! When Hexinverter shut its doors in 2022, the future of those gloriously twisted Mutant modules looked bleak — but Erica Synths swooped in, reverse‑engineered every circuit, and gave the whole lineup a second life with modern muscle.

🥁 Mutant Bassdrum — pure 808 thump or fuzzed‑out speaker‑ripper thanks to batteryACID distortion. CV everything, stay clean or filthy.

🎯 Mutant Snare — twin bridged‑T oscillators + snappy noise + switchable HP/BP filter = crack, glitch, or full‑roar chaos. External audio input turns it into its own percussion synth.

💥 Mutant Rimshot — three oscillators, multimode VCF, and HI/LO/CLV voicing. Flip the range switch for deep FM clangs or classic 909 clicks.

👏 Mutant Clap — LFSR‑driven 909 clap that mutates into bleeps, broken textures, or lush analogue‑reverb tails. Dedicated NOISE out and Drive for extra crunch.

✨ Mutant Hihats — true analogue open/closed hats with per‑voice Drive, choke switch, resonant BPF, and external noise input. Classic shimmer to future grit.

🎚️ Drum Mixer Lite — six channels, LED metering, switchable AUX send, plus a vactrol compressor that glues (or crushes) your kit into one punchy monster.

Hexinverter’s DNA, Erica Synths’ engineering — same mutant attitude, new‑school reliability. Ready to patch, perform, and terrify your neighbours. 🔊⚡️

Behringer Syncussion SY-1 Analog Drum Patches + Samples Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"🥁 Analog Drums is a collection of 50 patches for the analog drum synthesizer Behringer Syncussion SY-1, featuring 12 Kicks, 8 Snares, 10 Toms, 6 Cymbals, 6 FX, and 8 Percussion sounds.
🔮 This soundset was born from an exploration of this retro-style drum synthesizer, crafting everything from classic, production-ready tones to more experimental percussive timbres. The result is a dual package: a patchbook plus 250 one-shot samples.

📦 Get the soundset: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/p/sync...

💾 Each patch served as a starting point from which several variations were recorded by slightly tweaking parameters. This way, you get not only a guide to recreating the sounds but also a ready-to-use WAV collection (44.1kHz / 24-bit) for both hardware samplers and DAWs.
The collection is suitable for many genres: synthwave, retrowave, techno, deep, house, downtempo, industrial, and many others — anywhere an analog retro sound is needed.

🎹 The Behringer Syncussion SY-1 can be triggered not only via the TRIG button or external trigger but also through MIDI. When connected to a MIDI keyboard, the keys transpose the pitch of the patch—experiment with different notes, octaves, and sequenced patterns to unlock a broad sonic range. Tweaking parameters during performance adds dynamic movement and expressiveness to your percussion lines.

📒 The soundset comes in a PDF format. Following the guidelines while experimenting with the suggested settings will deepen your understanding of the synth’s capabilities.
🎧 Each patch also includes an audio example to demonstrate its intended sound.

I added synth parts to the demos. They are not included in the soundset.

"Prepare to meet SoundThread - capable of the most insane sound mangling imaginable - and it's completely free. You might know of Composer's Desktop Project, used by our old pal Aphex Twin on Drukqs. CDP is one of the most powerful software sound design tools on Earth, and is free. It can do things you just can't do elsewhere. Problem is, CDP has never been especially easy to use. Enter SoundThread - a new, beginner friendly Mac/Windows/Linux "front end" for CDP. SoundThread gives you access to lots of CDP's power, but in a simple drag-and-drop modular way. It makes it fun and quick to explore, even if you have very limited experience - that's a big deal. CDP has never been this easy before.

This video was made completely independently of SoundThread & CDP - if I find something cool, I just want to spread the word.
