Featured Listings for June 2014

This post hosts all Featured listings that drop off the top of the site for the month. You'll find a link to previous months below. Many of these listings will obviously end in time and some will get re-listed (always check the listing). They will remain here as a record of what went up over time. For some, you can click on the image to see what they went for on eBay. Some expire from eBay and some expire from MATRIXSYNTH CLASSIFIEDS. This list only hosts some of the more interesting and unique items that have gone up over time, so be sure to check out the Auctions channel for everything else. You can of course search for any synth with "auction" in the search box on the top left of the site. If you click through the auction links you can see what items went for. You can also search by serial numbers to track the history of specific synths.

RIP Stephen Howell of Hollow Sun

We lost another. Some sad news in via Atomic Shadow:

"I learned this morning of the passing of my best friend, Stephen Howell. Many of you know of his work as Hollow Sun. He was a well respected sound designer who had worked for Peter Gabriel and many others. He was a long time fixture at Akai Professional where he designed the UI for many of their top products as well as producing the sample content.

Stephen was my mentor and gave me the nudge to take my music in to a totally abstract direction. Without him there would have been no Atomic Shadow project. I plan to write a bit more about him when I can think more clearly. I am closing down yesterday's world of tomorrow, at least for now.

We only produced one piece of music together. I always tried to get him to do more of his own music, but he said that making music did not pay the bills. He was correct of course. I cut together a video to go with it at the time. Please enjoy it and share it with anyone that you know who may have known Stephen, or had their musical experience made more alive by using one of his instruments."

Mid Century Electronica from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

"A short piece featuring my vintage, tube HP sine wave generators, tape loops and ring modulators with a photographic homage to the early pioneers of electronica.... Daphne Oram in twin set, the impish Delia Derbyshire of the early BBC Radiophonic Workshop, several tweedy boffins in their music labs, Karlheinz Stockhausen and so many others. A different age when innovation and ingenuity triumphed over the many technical limitations of the age.

Abstract music soundtrack re-mixed and produced by Stephen Howell of Hollow Sun using traditional techniques in a digital age."

You can find an interview with Stephen Howell on SoundBytes here.

"I was always huge fan of early electronica and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (Dr Who, Delia Derbyshire and all that as a six-year-old), Louis and Bebe Barron (who did the ‘electronic tonalities’ for the classic sci-fi movie ‘Forbidden Planet’) and loved the weird old gear they used to make/use, so Mario and I were able to design and create, using Kontakt, weird and wonderful things that flew in the face of, shall we say, more ‘conventional’ modern synths and sampler instruments..."

Indeed. Click here for all posts featuring Hollow Sun on MATRIXSYNTH. Each post is a tribute to his spirit. He will be sorely missed.

Update: Failed Muso has set up a condolence page here.

Dumb Songs Two Player Musical Hardware

Dumb Songs Jam from Joseph Moore on Vimeo.

"A Jam I did with Brendan Byrne to show off the capabilities of the Dumb Songs cabinet. Dumb Songs was my thesis project at Parsons MFADT program. It's an arcade cabinet that outputs MIDI notes and codes to be interpreted in Ableton Live."

Some additional info in via Joseph:

"Dumb Songs is a two player musical toy that uses physical arcade controllers to send MIDI notes and control signals to Ableton Live, creating a musical environment for two people. The look is inspired as much by Dr. Seuss, Pee-Wee's Playhouse and The Phantom Tollbooth, as my intent to use a messy, dilapidated, asymmetrical aesthetic to further convince potential players that it's supposed to be touched and played. (If it looks imperfect, people won't hesitate.)

The collaborative nature of the work is evident in the sound sculpting as well. The layout, design of controls, and configuration of software were all considered, not only for their own pure aesthetic qualities, but also in furtherance of fun and collaboration. Dumb Songs gives you a chance to be silly and make fun sounds with whoever happens to be around."

All faders rebuilt, all non-functioning buttons replaced, leds replaced if not working, and any broken or missing faders replaced for $20 USD each.

2. MODULE BOARD REBUILD:
All six 80017a voice chips restored and guaranteed working, calibrated to factory standards, and small defects within the module board repaired.

3. POWER BOARD REBUILD:
Large electrolytic capacitors replaced and power jack converted to the standard 3 prong computer cable receptacle. Includes new 3-prong power cable.

4. CPU BOARD REBUILD:
A new battery and mounitng chassis (originally they were soldered in) and all of your sounds archived.

5. KEYBED CONTACTS CLEANED

6. BENDER BOARD REBUILD:
Clean volume & portamento knobs, switch, sliders, and bender contacts.

This 106 has also had wood end caps added and a red LED bender. The only thing missing are the slider caps from the bender section. The folks at SynthSpa forgot to return those to me when they sent the synth back. Otherwise, its in amazing condition and sounds incredible.

Sequential Circuits Drumtraks SN 07424

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Great example of the rare customised version of this classic drum machine.

The Drumtraks is a fantastic classic 80 drum machine - a true contender to the Linn LM1 and Linndrum, with brilliantly chosen 8 bit sampled sounds and the essential Curtis analogue filters to beef-up the kick and toms.
This particular version has switches on the rear panel to toggle between extra installed EPROMS of 4 different snare sounds and 2 tom sounds (the extra snares include a more 'rock' power snare, and the other tom set is more Simmonds-like).

As stated in the condition description, the main mix output requires a TRS jack to be nearly inserted, but not quite, possibly an anomaly from the EPROM switch customisation."

TECHNOSAURUS MICROCON II Synthesizer SN TMII-2014

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"For sale is this used Technosaurus Microcon II synth module. The Microcon is a modern-day little analog monophonic synthesizer module emulating the simple design and sound of classic Roland TB-303 and SH-101 synths. They are made by Technosaurus, a Swiss company best known for their high-end Selector modular synths. It is handmade using the same discrete circuits found in its bigger brothers. The Microcon II is the enhanced MIDI version of the Microcon I, otherwise, they are identical. Do not miss out on this rare opportunity to own a hard-to-fine modern masterpiece. This auction also includes Free Worldwide Shipping!

The Microcon is a totally analog table-top synth module that's slightly smaller than the original TB-303. It has one main oscillator capable of either sawtooth or square waveforms, just like the TB-303. The addition of a sub-oscillator is more like SH-101, which can help beef up your bass sounds. The analog lowpass filter is switchable as either 2-pole (12dB/oct) or 4-pole (24dB/oct), which is better than the TB-303 or SH-101 offered. The LFO can modulate the filter cutoff frequency with either triangle or square wave and the VCO can be modulated by square or triangle waves. Simple attack and decay envelope controls and a Glide effect round out this fairly simple to use and highly affordable 303 clone. The Microcon only uses CV and Gate for being controlled externally.

The Microcon II adds MIDI, making this cool little mono-synth available to the masses! The Microcon II has all of the features of the original, but adds MIDI IN for performance and control of parameters such as accent, cutoff frequency and glide. Also new are a filter input to process external signal sources, CV/Gate outputs added, and the Microcon II can be used as a midi to CV converter for other CV/GATE gear.

This particular example, serial number TMII-2014, is in very excellent all original condition. This unit does NOT included a power supply, though it was tested with a universal adapter."

Alesis Ion Virtual Analog Synthesizer

"The Ion has 8-voice polyphony with 3 oscillators per voice, and is 4-part multi-timbral. It offers continuously variable wave shapes (sine waves can morph into square waves), plus osc-sync and FM synthesis. 16 filter types are included, along with two LFOs, Sample & Hold, and an Arpeggiator-all of which sync to MIDI clock. A powerful and intuitive modulation matrix is built in, as well as a 40-band vocoder that does not use up any polyphony. External stereo audio can be processed through the filters, effects, or the vocoder..."

Analogue Systems RS-360 Vocal / Phase Filter

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Just as the precise positions and shapes of the formants in a human voice allow you to identify the speaker as well as the vowel sound spoken, formants make the timbres of acoustic instruments consistent and recognizable from one instrument to the next. It therefore follows that recreating formants is a big step forward for synthesizing many types of sounds. Normally, formant synthesis requires at least three formant filters per sound with appropriate CVs for each. The RS360 provides all of this in a single 24 HP module. However, the RS360 is more than just a formant filter. All three filters produce the four common filter characteristics: low-pass, high-pass, notch and band-pass, with summed outputs that offer the low-pass outputs of all three filters, the high-pass outputs of all three, and so on. You can also use the RS360 as an effects unit. If you route different outputs (say, band-pass and notch) to two panned channels, you can produce stereo effects reminiscent of the flangers and phasers used in early multi-keyboards. Furthermore, you can use the self-oscillating filters as multiple audio signal sources, or create unusual waveforms from the three partials."

TimeActor DIY (Do it Yourself) Modular Synthesizer. Test meines nicht fertigen Modular Synthesizer's

Published on May 31, 2014

"Except for the components and circuit boards completely self-planned and built modular synthesizer system. Synth This need fear no comparison with purchased expensive systems! Overall, I werkele in my more than limited spare time, intermittently since about 3 years to the part. Tons components and time-consuming are the front panel with the label I "bake" using special foil in the oven. finished front panels have behind the lens as printed and painted. as you can see, some modules are not done yet! regards Martin aka TimeActor"

"I purchased a Korg Volca Keys this weekend at the excellent Nerd Audio analog shop in Chicago. really having a blast with this and the monotribe, so easy to cook up some 90s alt rock loops.

Korg, if you're reading - how about a little volca mixer/sampler to connect together all your other fun boxes?

Volca Keys is playing through the Monotribe filter. no effects except some mild compression inside the box. note the stuttering sync - i think i've got some issues with clocking, but i also sort of enjoy the glitches."

This is probably the final design, and forms a complete trigger sequencer with the A-157-2 (8 separate trigger output module) and the A-157-3 (basic controller)..."
