Roland MSQ-700 Digital Keyboard Recorder

"The MSQ-700 is an 8-track sequencer that holds up to 6,500 notes that can be stored. Several functions of the MSQ-700 include a chain function, multi-track function, overdubbing and a merge function. Use it to control your TR-909, or Juno-60 or any other MIDI equipment. The MSQ-700 is compatible with both MIDI and Roland's proprietary DCB sync methods (although it can't do both at the same time).

The MSQ may load notes in real time or step time into any of the units 8 tracks. The unit offers 1-6 and 8 beats per measure. Step time allows you to enter notes step by step. The note is selected by an external keyboard and the duration is selected by a slider.

The MSQ has both MIDI in and out ports and well as a DCB interface. However the machine can only use on these interfaces at once. So it will not act as a DCB to MIDI converter which is a shame. This means you cant send the unit midi data and have it send out the DCB interface. DCB is found on the Roland Juno 60 and more importantly later Jupiter 8s. The MSQ may be controlled by its internal clock or controlled by external midi clock, tape sync, or din sync. The MSQ can write tape sync and can control other units (i.e. TR909, TR606, MC4, etc..) using din sync. The ability to sync and control using all these different formats is one of the MSQ main strengths. The unit can be controlled by its own or external midi clock and send din sync signals at the same time or vice versa. So the MSQ700 will function as a midi clock to din sync converter."

"Transferred some custom samples to my new Blofeld using the Waldorf Spectre software and made some patches with it.

Perhaps I am late to the party, but I must say the sound of this synth is amazing and the digital filters got lots of character. I also really like the mod matrix, arpeggiator and wavetables.

In this video I've spread some of my patches across a multi bank so I can play these sounds together with the keyboard using various key ranges.

Obviously I am not good at playing the keys at all and feel much safer using a sequencer most of the time, but nonetheless I had some fun using the Blofeld this way ;)

Circuits PROPHET-600 -THAT WOULD ROCK!!!
Hum.... I'd LOVE a Sequential Prophet-6 even more!!!!!!!
Anyways, here are a few demos of the "Hollow Pad"

Dreadbox Abyss - Twiddling With and Exploring the Sounds

"WARNING: a bit lengthy listen to the Dreadbox Abyss, 4-voice analog(ue) synthesizer (I tried to cut the length down, but obviously failed). This is NOT a review, and there's no talking past the introduction. It's basically a big sound sampler focusing on chords, with a bit of lead and bass thrown in as well.

When it comes to synths, this thing is retro-in-a-box. And I'm talking sound most of all. And in case you were wondering, the opening ProckGnosis theme for this video was done only with the Abyss and some VST drums.

Top 4 things I've discovered so far:
- If you want that "Boards of Canada" drifting oscillator sound (more recently overexposed in the "Stranger Things" soundtrack), this thing nails it
- The hybrid delay really does create a great chorus effect (the Erebus should be able to do this too, but I've never tried)
- Just a touch of "drive" on the VCA helps make the sound even more classic and...uh...not sure really, but I describe it as "dirty" in the video
- The selection of variable wave shapes sort of pushes this into OB6 territory, and being able to easily modulate the waves really pumps some life into the sound

Again, hats off to Dreadbox for this kind of stuff. I said somewhere, yeah, it's just a synthesizer, but they do it just a little bit differently, and that really makes it something more unique in the field of synths. Cheers!"

"Key weight is missing (see photo). You can't really tell when you're playing, in my opinion.
I replaced the "tune" slide potentiometer. The metal post on the new one had to be trimmed to fit the cap. After doing this it was a little bit wobbly, so I gave it a drop of superglue to make it tight. The 'Unison 2' LED is broken. It still lights up, but the tip is broken off so it doesn't stick up as much as the other ones (see photo). The number buttons to change patches/parameters tend to double click when you press them hard. I've noticed this on other Korgs from this era. It's totally usable, you just have to get used to get used to it. Generally the keys are a little loud, physically. I think that's just how these units are. THINGS I DID NOT TEST (because I am unable): Portamento Jack, Program Up Jack, To/From Tape Jacks"

late night modular patch (mutable instruments, make noise, intellijel)

Before I started to tear down yesterday's patch I wanted to do a modular only freestyle jam on it.. some additions of a kick drum and even more chopped up samples in the morphagene turned it into a different tune really :) This modular stuff is fun!

Main sound sources are MI braids + 0-coast and the morphagene, braids is modulated by the maths, tides and sequenced by the beat step pro, filter in the 7U is ripples and uVCA from intellijel. 0-coast is standalone and is only sequenced by the beat step.

Kick drum and snare are from the peaks, triggered by the best step in a random fashion :)

FX, EQD space spiral and reverb from the Keeley caverns + some random reverb washes in the Elektron Analog four (not in picture) for the 0-coast.

But now, all patch cables are out... new sounds for the next run! :D
