Yamaha AN1X Sounds - Part 1

Published on Oct 14, 2017 ProckGnosis

"Skip to 03:20 to jump the preamble synth and beer babble. Just a rather LENGTHY listen to a very decent sounding and very capable virtual analog (VA) synth from Yamaha released in 1997. And yes, these are almost all presets I demo, and the opening music was recorded with just the AN1X and some drums.

You have to ask, if Yamaha made a VA this good 20 years ago, what's up with not being able to at least match its capability in all the stuff they have put out since? There was obviously a way, but maybe not the will.

Not counting the AN200 (which was sort of AN1X with half the voices), the CS ReFace is the only virtual analog synth Yamaha has put out in all that time since (unless I'm forgetting some other synth).

--AN1X Specs--
Polyphony - 10 notes
Oscillators - 2 osc: saw, variable width pulse, FM
Effects - Reverb, delay, 3-band EQ, chorus, flanger, phaser, enhancer, compressor, distortion, overdrive, amp simulator.
Filter - Resonant 12/18/24dB/oct low/band/hi pass filter + 1 more hi pass
Arpeg/Seq - Arpeg: 1 mon/poly, up, down, up/down, random; MIDI-capable. Seq: 16 steps, 1 track
Keyboard - 61 keys (with velocity and aftertouch)
Memory - 128 patches
Control - MIDI (2 parts)
Date Produced - 1997"

Crunchy Accidents (modular synth patch)

Published on Oct 14, 2017 Urs Heckmann

"Another self-playing patch, with a bit of live mixing, tweaking and patching. This time it's on the noisy side of the spectrum. It starts with accidental audio of putting the coffee mug on the table, pulling the clock cable for the sequencer to slowly, later on running the delay so hot it clips badly and all of that. First take, had to be it.

Some dark grungy, glitchy, twangy noise, atmospheres and drones, paired with some nice and thick synth sequences. This modular system is slightly modified over last vid (Clouds out, Polaris and Doepfer 138d CFX in), with Vermona Retroverb added for extra earth-shattering spring crashes.

Unfortunately I forgot to check the audio settings of the recorder. So it's maybe just 12 bits or so. Fits the vibe though.

Patch notes are a bit beyond comprehension on this one, even for myself. As so often, Batumi acts as clock source and clock divider. It also does a lot of the modulation, specifically on Rings and Maths. Maths controls Rings and Polivoks VCF Cutoff, with heavily bouncing cycles.

Oscillators (Dixie 2+ and MiniMod) are controlled by the two Tiranas going through uScale. One Tirana is occasionally transposed by some Batumi trapezoidal output.

Dixie 2+ does the bright, unfiltered PWM bass sound which also goes through the Retroverb. Its SubOsc output goes into Rings (which here does most of the Mayhem)

MiniMod goes into Polivoks VCF and plays the high arpeggios, which occasionally burst out in very fast trills and glicthy FilterFM from Maths.

Noise from Kinks and Snare from Peaks form the noise bits, with a lot of sweeping through Polaris and Kamieniec.

Black Hole DSP drenches everything in reverb and DLD does the echo, with occasional cross-patched feedback going into digital overload.

Vermona tiles and PanMix do the mixing, but I also used both Polivoks inputs and Optomix to max things out.

Lastly, uVCA control depth of PWM and Vibrato (sourced from Batumi) in the Dixie 2+ PWM voice.

That's roughly what it is."

Yamaha CS-80 Blade Runner 2050

Published on Oct 14, 2017 MrFirechild

"This track is using sounds only from the Yamaha CS-80, an iconic analog synthesizer from the late 70s. Vangelis used it a lot for the soundtrack to the original Blade Runner movie and it appears Hans Zimmer used it as well for the 2049. This track is produced and composed by www.firechild.se using the Yamaha CS-80 as the only soundsource. Additional effects include the AVID Revibe Reverb, Oakley SE-330 Ensemble Chorus and Oakley Human Voice which give a choir like sound when feeding it with pure sawtooth waves. This piece of music is an original composition but of course inspired by the mood and vibe of the original Blade Runner soundtrack. Listen in big speakers for the best sound experience. The task here was not the vast field of sound scaping with Analog Heat but more to add some analog feel to the purely digital G2-voices. So: There is no character change in the recordings.

First you here the unprocessed track by track recording and then the tune where each track was individually processed to taste by using differend filters and characters in Heat."

Lyra-8 Simpler Organismic Textures with Percussive Oberheim SEM Pro and Sequencing Semblance

Published on Oct 13, 2017 martinjazz78

"Good speakers or headphones are highly recommended. These synths sound so beautifully and deserve appropriate listening device.

Another excerpt from my dawless synth jam with amazing yet for me still not easily controllable Lyra-8 by SOMA synths from Russia. In this part, I was producing textures (quasi harmonies) on Lyra-8 and again was pleasantly surprised by sheer beauty and inspirativness of everything coming out Lyra, although many of these sounds weren't intended and even expected to happen.

Percussive sequence on the background is modern reissue of classic Tom Oberheim's SEM Pro controlled by Cirklon hardware sequencer. Cirklon also controls Semblance by Analogue Solutions, which is in fact a clone of the Oberheim's SEM, but it sounds completely different. Both synths are processed through the vintage tape Roland Space Echo for delay and Strymon Big Sky for reverb.

Additionally you hear Taurus III Bass Pedals by Moog Music (from about middle of the video) giving some long sustained bass tones (again controlled by Cirklon). Last but not least, you hear Ken Macbeth's Elements Synthesizer creating very organically sounding atmospheric ambience.

Enjoy ;)"

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The X7000 was Akai's first major Sampler Keyboard instrument similar in style and format to the E-mu Emax, Ensoniq Mirage, EPS and Roland S-10 sampling keyboards. The X7000 has about the same sampling features as the rack-mount S-900, which were great in 1986. Variable 12-bit sampling up to 40kHz, 128K RAM for storing only a few seconds worth of samples and a complete suite of basic sample editing functions including looping, auto-looping, truncating, multi-sampling and re-sampling capabilities, tuning and so on. It even features a few dedicated parameter buttons above the keyboard for quick access to the LFO and other modulations.

This sampler sounds pretty good. It's got a lo-fi edge due to the fact that it's only a 12-bit rather than 16-, 20- or 24-bit sampler. The slow 2.8" built-in disk drive is not exactly compatible with much. But you can use it to store your samples or load samples from libraries for Akai's S-612, S-700 and X7000. Editing samples is straight forward and makes this synth a great entry-level sampler. However, the LCD display is small so editing can be tedious. It also features a cool analog-like filter with cutoff. But for enhanced analog-like editing, the X7000 can be hooked up to the AX73, AX60and VX90 synthesizers via the DD-X5013 Voice Cable so you can run the X7000's samples through these synth's analog circuitry."

New Eventide H9000 to Support Max/MSP Patches?

Soviet Space Child sent in news of the new Eventide H9000 effects processor.

There's a rumor that it will support Max/MSP patches. Whether that means integration with an external computer running Max/MSP, or actually hosting them natively, we will have to wait and see.

via Eventide does hint at it up front:

"Hello! My name is Jack Impink. I am an electronic musician by trade, working with both gear and software. I like to use older equipment alongside programs like Max/MSP to see what kind of odd sounds will be produced. I’ve been working in the Eventide Labs beta testing the H9000, and I can’t wait to show you what I’ve been finding so far.

First and foremost, the big news: Eventide will be unveiling the H9000 at the 143rd AES Convention on October 18th, 2017! You may have seen some footage of the unit from a certain promotional video already, but in this blog we’ll be going a little deeper. Tune in to see what features we’re working on and any hidden gems that I discover along the way.

Two videos recommended and sent my way via John L Rice. The second is further below.

"A simple ambient jam for the summer.

Some quick patch notes:

First (plucked string) voice:
Rings and STO sequenced by Copper Traces Seek

Bassline and "lead":
Pittsburgh Modular Synth Box (bassline) and Industrial Music Electronics Piston Honda MkII (slow lead) both sequenced by Stillson Hammer Mk II

Background melodies:
Synthesis Tehcnology E330 - sequenced by Stillson Hammer Mk II
Intellijel Dixie II (and multed copy of Dixie II melody recorded into Morphagene) sequenced by Make Noise Rene (Rene X input from Zularic Repetitor)

Fiters:
Three Sisters - plucked string voice and background melodies
AJH MiniMod VCF - bassline
AJH Sonic XV - lead

Effects:
Mutable Instruments Clouds x2 (looping delay mode on both)
Make Noise Erbe Verb (plucked strings sound, and background melodies)
Make Noise Echophon - background melodies
Dual Looping Delay (plucked strings)
Zvex Instant Lo-fi Junky (lead)"

Colloidal Flow

Published on Sep 3, 2017

"A reworking of the last patch I posted. This is a significantly different take, focusing on the ambient and drone with the sequenced parts blended in more.

PADS:
VCOs: E330 Multimode VCO (in Wavetable mode) into Clouds looping delay

PADS 2:
Direct outs from STO (sine) and Dixie II into clouds reverb

PLUCKY SYNTHS:
VCOs: STO and Dixie II
Sequencer: Turing Machine into uScale II, uScale A and B outs going to each VCO
Envelopes: Quadra
Envelope Triggers: Zularic Repetitor
Delay: Dual Looping Delay

16th NOTE SEQ:
VCO: Piston Honda MkII
Sequencer: Stillson Hammer Mk II
Filter: MiniMod VCF
Envelope (VCA and filter): Quadra

Variations in the bassline are from the Assignable A and B inputs on the SHMkII, they are being fed random S&H from the Ultra Random Analog, a multed copy of the S&H feeds into the shift input on the uScale, so both sets of sequences change at the same time.

KICK:
VCO: the sub bass out from STO into Pittsburgh Synth Box LPG in, triggered by output 4 from Zularic Repetitor"

Inventive Pocket Operator Case - iPhone 3G Cases

Thought this was pretty cool.

via MATRIXSYNTH reader, Jeremy:

"I had a cool idea to use an old iPhone G3 case I had lying around for my Pocket Operator. Turns out they are almost the same size as the old iPhone. It worked so well I bought new ones to use. All you need to do is put the PO in the case upside down and cut some holes for your audio jacks."

Upside down for the hanger to fit through the charging gap in the case as you can see in the pics. Simple, affordable, and smart solution. Think of of the case styles out there to customize it as well.

at the beginning, a ring modulation (intellijel dixie 2 / make noise sto) is alternately heard with a sound sequence of the make noise morphagene. both go through the zvex instant lo-fi junky in the tape delay of the disting mk4.
the noisy sounds comes from the dreadbox gamma and go into the 4ms dld. volume is controlled by batumi.

from 05:43
