Introducing the Fairlight App for iPhone & iPad

YouTube via FairlightInstruments | Feb 27, 2011 |

"Introducing the Fairlight App for iPhone & iPad, available from the Apple App Store in March 2011. Over 30 years since the original Fairlight CMI first changed the way we make music, we are proud to present the iPhone & iPad Apps, giving you the experience of a CMI Series IIx in the palm of your hand, complete with the full Series IIx factory library and expandable to include the best of the Series III library and even your own samples.

Marvel at the then revolutionary Page R step sequencer, gasp at the three dimensional waveforms in Page D and bask in the wonder of some of the most famous sounds of the Eighties!

The sound track of this video is also one of the app's built-in demos. 'Octagonalle' was created using original Series II library sounds on the Fairlight iPad app by producer/composer Justin Shave. Shave confronted his first CMI in 2006 when he co-produced Darren Hayes' album "This Delicate Thing We've Made." Darren had decided that the Fairlight was the only instrument which could deliver the '80s sensibility he was seeking, bought one on eBay, and handed it to Shave to tame. The rest is history.

The full dance track is available as a free download from the Fairlight web site.

http://www.fairlightinstruments.com.a...

The app celebrates the release of the strictly limited edition CMI 30A. 100 hand built recreations of the CMI IIx, using state of the art technology to bring you the true Fairlight CMI experience as never before.

Order yours at http://fairlightinstruments.com.au

The legend has returned."

Dual Yusynth Filters Demo

YouTube via davidryle | Feb 27, 2011 |

"Yves Usson's Minimoog transistor ladder filter module from a Bridechamber.com kit.
Two different component builds. One with the 2210 transistor arrays and the second with three pairs of matched BC547 NPN's. They sound similar but the calibrations may be a little off in relation to one another. The 2210 transistor array sounds smoother to me. The discrete transistor pairs sound thicker in the resonant ring. Probably due to the slightly less matched pairing. All caps are within 1% in the ladder but each module contains different vendor parts for the capacitors.
The front panels are different too. The left module is silk screened graphics, and was bought used. The right module was engraved with a high speed CNC milling machine in my shop. The font is not the best but I plan to improve on it for future projects.
Running these modules in parallel is really interesting. I have another video I made of that. I'll post it later. I can't really say whether the clones are truly close to a Minimoog filter or not. I don't own one and it's been years since I've played one. Also there are different makes of Minimoog so the filters all don't sound the same exactly anyway. Regardless, I think these filters sound very good and am pleased with the build. Yves is quite a good designer and I feel fortunate to be able to use his design here.
The left module with the 2210's is a component and PCB kit from Bridechamber.com. The right module was just the PCB from them but I rounded up all the components. Thanks to Scott Deyo for rushing these kits out to me. This was a real fun project and great learning exercise."

A Radiophonic Weekend - Bristol

Update: The event is in April, not March.

Two day event via Cube Cinema, Saturday April the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd.

"Day one of a weekend of special events, performances, screenings and more - dedicated to the output and legacy of the one and only BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

With their often primitive hand built devices, tape loops and early synth explorations, the workshop brought the sound of electronic weirdness out of the realms of academia and into the home, re-adjusting the ears and minds of an entire generation in the process. As interest in their oddly British, and often somewhat crackpot approach to electronic experimentation grows, and as many of their key instigators finally begin to gain the worldwide recognition their pioneering efforts deserve, we spend a special one-off weekend looking back on some of the characters, stories, sounds and inventions that shaped an era.

On day one (Saturday), we’re delighted to welcome very special guests - Radiophonic boffins, David Cain and Dick Mills - who will be presenting a history of the workshop, discussing their work, and presenting a wealth of material unheard for decades.

Gleeman Pentaphonic Synth Demo

via this auction
video below and at the auction.
"extremely rare vintage 1982 Gleeman Pentaphonic analog synth with original owner's manual... serial number 8110047, from the original owner.

The Gleeman Pentaphonic is a five-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer produced in extremely limited quantities (approximately 75 total, including 50 black and 20+ clear) during 1982. It was designed by brothers Al and Bob Gleeman and featured three DCOs for a stable and juicy analog sound. The Pentaphonic was designed to compete against such classics as; the Sequential Prophet-5, Moog Minimoog and Polymoog, and the Oberheim 4-Voice.

In addition to three oscillators per voice, the Pentaphonic has a four-pole lowpass resonant filter with an ADSR envelope, a VCA with ADSR, an LFO, and built-in chorusing (slow or fast). There is also a handy 300-note capacity sequencer on-board for simple real-time recordings that you can play along with. There's also a cool X/Y joystick for controlling pitch and mod effects. Some models, such as this one, also had a Presetter added which gave it 100 patch memories and eight digital waveforms."

TR-808 gets the post here vs. C.
"while 4/4 isn't generally released by us, this one escaped destruction. we happened to be recording when this "analog transmission" bounced around the studio inadvertently. while waiting to record a future release we flagged down the drink cart, toasted the invention of analogue, and let the machines pilot themselves for a moment. afterward we coaxed and prodded and this was the result. in it's entirety it's over 30 minutes. we edited it down to 5. it is, in the truest sense, an example of control voltages fluctuating, peaking and subsiding. the tr727,while not heard on this track, is the "tightest" machine we have to keep the antiquated midi clock semi controllable. for this project in the (almost finished) studio, everything gets recorded to multiple tracks in one pass. the timing is so loose, good luck capturing dubs that would match.

the gear heard on this recording is: korg ms-10, korg sq-10, roland tr808, moogerfoogers, ensoniq dp/4, memorymoog, akai ax 60, akai s612 samplers.

Warm, Pleasing Digital Instruments, Lush CHORD & Accompanyment.
Grainy Lo-Fi Drums with loads of preset patterns and Demo tunes.
Very Cool and useful CHORD Management features like the OMNICHORD

Modcan Super Delay & Digital Delay Comparison

YouTube via scootermccrae | Feb 27, 2011 |

"People have been wondering about the difference in sound between the Modcan 30B Super Delay (which is a true analog delay) and the Modcan 59B Digital Delay, so I set up a simple audio demonstration. It's not meant to be an analog vs. digital contest -- as you'll hear, both of them sound beautiful but have very different tonal characteristics as well as unique reactions to control voltage manipulation.

The Modcan Sequencer is triggering a Modcan 58B VCDO that is passing through a Modcan 68B Matrix Filter (using the 4-Pole Bandpass output). In the first half of the video, that signal is passing through the analog Super Delay -- which is a mono device. I twiddle the knobs throughout and then eventually let triangle waveforms from the Modcan 61B Quad LFO take over the invisible finger chores.

The second half of the video is the same sequence and signal chain passing through the Digital Delay, which has been engaged to output the audio in stereo mode. Again, after some manual twiddling I put the 61B Quad LFO to work once more and send a slow-moving triangle waveform into the control voltage inputs.

As may be apparent from the studio configuration, I do love the Modcan modules for their sound, aesthetic beauty and a user interface that squeezes myriad functions per module into a reasonably-sized space. I hope you find this a useful and entertaining video."

YouTube via dkimcg | Feb 27, 2011 |

"Figured out a way to record video and audio at once, not the best quality, but saves me time processing and converting.

bottom of 258v FMs top of 258V which FMs the ZOe. The bottom output also FMs the 291e and the ZOe pulse out provides the PWM wave for the filter. FM index, and morph modulations from 281e processed through 256e, and a slewed pulse from the 250e. Patch looks more complicated than it is because of the cascading envelopes the 281e is setup for. The 258e is only a control oscillator, most the sound is coming from the ZOe and the 291e colors and resonates the ZOe square."

'Just discovered an amazing concept in rough trade records in london...

But it's quite a unique selection - common brands through to some quite rare stuff.
They lock you in for free and let you do whatever you want!

I'm sure this is of interest to anyone here with or considering a modular. And they give free lessons every week...'"
