Dave Smith Instruments Prophet '08: Drawbar Organ

"This improvisation is meant to demonstrate the ability of the Prophet '08 to imitate the sound of a drawbar organ. The PWM solo was played on a second P'08.

In general, I've never been a fan of the Hammond Organ sound. There are only a few drawbar settings that I like, and this patch is an imitation of one of them. But the truth is, the classic Hammond/drawbar organ sound requires a Leslie effect. Mere detuning is a lame substitute.

Good organ playing requires an exacting technique. Because of the nature of the instrument's envelope - having a sharp attack and an immediate release - it's essential that notes played together be struck exactly at the same instant. Sad to say, I find that synthesizer keyboards do not meet the quality necessary so that such a precise attack can always be made. This is true for the Prophet '08 and Poly Evolver Keyboard as well. I've noticed many times, especially when playing hymns or Bach chorales, that it's nearly impossible to get the attacks of the notes to be crisp and clean, even with repeated tries of the same passages. The same is true for this piece. There are many instances when the strikes of simultaneous notes are not together, creating a smearing effect. That's my disclaimer. There are many imperfections in this improvisation.

"Two birds with one stone.

I wanted to demo the gate out on the DD7 and do a musical run on the PT before i got down to making some evil noise with it. Turns out i could do both at once since i needed the pro one for the cv on the pt 82's filter. And what better to drive it than another bent bit of gear.

So here it is, the dd7 is hooked up to reason which is triggering the drums and driving the gate. The gate out on the dd7 is driving the pro one sequencer which is then outputting control voltage to the cv in on the pt82 to animate the filter cutoff. And i'm just doing the usual lofi nine inch nails cover thing i'm so keen on when it comes to youtube jamming.

I'm using the drone distortion and filter mostly on the pt. Cranking the resonance to max to add definition to the cv sequencing. You can hear it chirping away to itself at the end. The delay was set up before the track to give a syncopated echo and kicks in a little way in to add an air of ambience to the keys."

This video is a bit long for what it is, but there are some sweat spots so I went ahead and uploaded it. The SUB PHATTY is being sequenced by StepPolyArp on an original iPad. One sequence throughout. Dry signal up to 1:42 and then liberal effects - mainly reverb & phaser. As always, just tweaking and exploring sound. Think of these more like enjoying flavors of sound rather than compositions of music. A bit like sonic wine tasting! :) Remember to set it to HD otherwise your will be denying your sonic palate!

"This SH-101 has the legendary Nova mods installed which add a lot of new functionality to the 101! The features are:

LFO speed range is now much increased with a 3 way toggle switch for low/normal/high settings. Great Filter FM effects are now possible using the LFO.

External audio input has been added and you can route audio in and process with the filter OR external audio source can be used to FM the filter (depending on the FM - VCF switch at the back, see pics).

Other features include a Drive pot used for driving the filter input harder for a more saturated over driven sound (at lowest setting it is the normal Sh101 sound).

PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) can now use all the available LFO waveforms, selectable by a pot/switch (not just limited to the triangle waveform as on a normal Sh101) PWM modulation waveform is also completely independent from the main LFO setting (so LFO and PWM can use different waveforms simultaneously)

"Up for sale is a very rare Roland CMU-800 CompuMusic vintage analog synthesizer/sequencer module. Additionally it has 8 cv/gate outs for controlling other gear that supports this feature.

The unit powers on and the LED lights up, but that is all as far as the testing goes as I don't have the needed gear to test. So I am selling this AS IS.

It also comes with an Apple II interface card -- no software though. (Everything you get is in the two photos).

If you search the net there is a way of making or buying a MIDI interface for this. One is available for around $75 from beatnic.jp, which is based on an atMega168 using schematics and c code another Japanese fellow developed. I'll include on a DVD-ROM this set of files. -- in case you want to implement your own using the schematics, printed circut board image file and the c code.

I read that with the MIDI interface you can trigger all 8 channels of the cv/gate -- for compatible gear. Channel 8 has a nice portamento effect."

Furious Microtemporal Programmer / Sequencer

"Video showing the basic features of my touch keyboard, ribbon, and joystick controlled analog microtemporal programmer sequencer. It is a little complicated! Lots of Ken Stone CGS boards insides, with a hacked Arduino / Narbotic Midivox MIDI clock.
The microtemporal side (continuously variable note lengths) functions by comparing any analog waveform (a rising sawtooth for the easiest to understand) with 16 stacked, variable width (each knob in the bottom row) windowed comparators. The other useful custom feature is the four gated (i.e. "strobed") LM311 comparators that allow note by note muting across all four sequencer tracks. Really simple (just turn the knob to zero) to implement - probably has been done, but I haven't seen this before."

The Q167 LFO++ is a Low Frequency Oscillator and universal modulator with a wide range of interesting features. This functionally-dense module creates complex modulation with a variety of common and unusual waveforms. The built-in envelope generator produces spring-like decays for both frequency and amplitude - increasing or decreasing.
Direct patch points for both frequency and amplitude make it easy to control modulation with a wheel, expression block, keyboard pressure or a sequencer.

The envelope generator provides control over sustain time to produce delayed modulation, a partial section of a waveform, or a burst of waves including pulses useful for programming sequencers and creating multiple gates.
The unique waveform control section starts with simple familiar waves and curves them into waves you haven't heard before.

The Q167 can also act like an audio oscillator with 1V/Octave response, amplitude control, and harmonically rich waveforms.

Cross patch two Q167 modules together for mind-bending FM and AM sounds.

"Very rare vintage monosynth in need of restoration.
I believe it is a kit synthesiser dating from the late 1970s/early 1980s
Sold as seen. I have had sound out of both oscillators and the noise generator but it is beyond my expertise to control it in any useful way. Not convinced all the keys work. Volume pot is crackly and sound can surge in and out. Very fat sound though.. Would suit synth enthusiast looking for restoration/ modification project. Or sound designer looking for unruly, unearthly rumblings...

"This is a fully functioning Mini pops 5 Rhythm Drum Machine in excellent cosmetic and working condition. It comes with the original power cord as well as the original output cord. I purchased an RCA to 1/4" adapter, so the unit can easily be played through any standard amplifier! This unit is from the late 60's/Early 70's, and is an amazingly flexible drum machine that allows you to dial in a huge array of rhythms and beats while being able to tweak the speed, volume and tone. In the "Fox-Swing" and "Young-Beat" settings, you are able to tweak the sound to add or delete specific instrumentation from the rhythm. The chrome bar on the face of the unit is tapped by the user to start and stop the unit. There is also a built-in metronome that you can engage to play along with the beat/rhythm. Again, this unit is tested and fully functioning and is ready-to-play upon arrival. The shape of the unit is such that it allows it to be attached to any organ/shelf or table top securely by a set screw in the center, although it doesn't need to be. The unit sits flush when not attached to a level surface as well."

"This Auction for best sounding Polivoks version - manufactured in 80's at Kachkanar by Formanta factory. This exe was made in march 1987 serial N. 043 Last years production exemplars from 89-92 don`t have that superb fatty and agressive sound & more like plastic type of sound. so if you get ocasion to chek different Polivoks editions-you can hear it ! The synth in absolutely working & excellent visual condition - after professional service . All dead electrolytes were changed on good quality new, potentiometers and switches were cleaned&oiled before this auction .This Polivoks with White Keys & With a signs of use!Also note - Big Pots Knobs ( is not original ) was missed - & change to cheakenhaed style."

Thought this was pretty funny.   How many of you have had this happen to you?  I remember years ago drunkenly playing my Matrix-6 like I was the phantom of the opera. After about twenty minutes of it my roommate couldn't take it any more.  She popped out of bed, hair all disheveled and at the top of her lungs, yelled at me to please stop!  She was trying to sleep while I wailed away a slurry of rubbish on the Matrix-6 in the adjacent room.

"This is the live studio version of the modular synthesizer set I put together for the Analogue Haven event in Santa Monica, CA on August 28, 2015.

All sounds were from my 12U eurorack Modular Synthesizer and the new REON Driftbox-R Limited from Roland.

Specs:

- The intro was played on the REON Driftbox-R which was released in July 2015. You can see two of my demos of that little synth here:

- The drums are all Hexinverter's Mutant Bassdrum, Mutant HiHats, Mutant Clap and Noise Engineering's Basimilus Iteritas.

- Sequencing is done by Intellijel's Metropolis, Kilpatrick Audio's K4815, and the Make Noise Pressure Points via Brains.

- The vocal samples near the end is from one of those secret Easter eggs on Mutable Instruments Peaks.

- The case is from Monorocket.

"Just fooling around with my Korg products.

Saw a video which inspired me to try out live looping capabilities with the KP3 kaoss pad and it works pretty well.

Kind of unfortunate that the KP3 adjusts the pitch of your sample / loop when adjusting the tempo BPM manually or via midi.

The main selection knob on my Electribe ES-1 is also not tracking well and sometimes jumps backwards quite a bit when rotating for patch selection. Bummer.

Anyone else had these abnormalities? Was the individual loop volume for the KP3 a firmware upgrade?
